In the early 2000s, two Western role-playing games grabbed the genre and shoved it into new and surprisingly popular directions. Bethesda's The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind (2002) and BioWare's Knights Of The Old Republic (2003) modernized RPGs' technology, expanded the audience, and created the two most popular models for the genre moving forward.
Before these two games were released, the term Computer Role-Playing Game (CRPG) was commonly used to describe the games in this column. Ultima, Wizardry, Fallout, Baldur's Gate, these all came out on computers (at least initially), with DOS/Windows becoming the computer platform of choice as the decade progressed. But Morrowind and KOTOR were designed and released for the Xbox – and they succeeded there. The realm of console RPGs was opened to very different styles of game from the Final Fantasies which had dominated. This successful move opened entirely new modes of money-making, allowing BioWare and Bethesda to become some of the biggest developers in gaming overall.

While Minecraft's upcoming January update version 1.5 churns away in the cauldrons of Mojang's most diligently studious wizards, a smaller update (version 1.4.6) is being coded in parallel for release sometime before Christmas.
Available to more adventurous adventurers now as Snapshot 12w49a, version 1.4.6 adds the ability to craft fireworks and enchanted books that can then be used to enchant items. Various bug fixes are also bundled with the patch, tough the Snapshot version of 1.4.6 is not itself guaranteed to be bug free.
The most important part of all of this, however, is that skulls can be added to the firework formula in order to make them look like Creepers when they explode, which is ironic and wonderful, as seen above.

Ubisoft has confirmed that it's working on a patch to add adjustable HUD (heads-up display) options to Far Cry 3.
The developer says this comes in response to user feedback, as CVG has witness many players complaining online of the game's cluttered user interface.PC players have been using a configuration hack to hide the HUD, but this can cause issues with hiding essential information - issues which will not occur with Ubisoft's official HUD options.
Here's the official statement passed to Kotaku:
"Based on feedback from both press and fans, the Far Cry 3 production team is working on a patch that will allow you to toggle most HUD/UI elements based on player preference. The patch will also avoid issues encountered in the .dll hack that might create a mission walkthrough break (missing QTE prompts, critical information, etc. The team is excited about how the Far Cry 3 community and fans of the game are enjoying themselves, and finding new ways to experience the Rook Islands. More news will be coming on the patch shortly..."
Ubisoft released PC patch 1.02 on Thursday, aiming to improve stability, team balancing and matchmaking, and fix issues where players fall through the world and the map editor crashes on launch.

Capcom has revealed its iconic Blue Bomber will return later this month in Street Fighter X Megaman, a new fan-made game for PC.
Street Fighter X Megaman was shown during the Street Fighter 25th Anniversary Tournament in San Francisco and will be distributed as a free download on the Capcom Unity website. Its release on December 17 marks the closing of the month-long Street Fighter anniversary celebrations and the start of the Megaman 25th anniversary festivities.
The crossover retains the classic Megaman style, Street Fighter characters including Ryu, Chun-Li, Blanka, Rolento and Dhalsim have been converted to 8-bit and serve as boss characters. Just like in the classic titles, by defeating these bosses Megaman can acquire their unique powers.
"Our fans have been so supportive of the 25th Anniversary efforts on Street Fighter, that we wanted to provide one last surprise and token of our appreciation," said Christian Svensson, Capcom's SVP of consumer software.
"This game symbolizes the passion and dedication of our fans and with the 25th Anniversary of Mega Man coming up, we felt it was our duty to bring this wonderful experience to everyone who has shared the last 25 years with us and both of these celebrated franchises."
SFxMM is the brainchild of Megaman superfan and professional Street Fighter player Seow Zong Hui. After seeing the game running on Hui's laptop at EVO 2012, Capcom's Christian Svensson decided to officially endorse the project and include it in the company's 25th anniversary campaign.

Linux for Steam might not be ready for mass consumption just yet, but we're now able to get an idea of what system requirements will be for some of the platform's games. Valve has updated select titles with Tux-friendly specifications. While some games don't appear to require a specific distro, Ubuntuappears to be the most supported thus far. If you plan on heading over to Steam's site to see if your setup cuts the mustard, double dippers be warned -- it seems that non-Linux machines will not display system requirements. We're guessing the masses will see something like the screengrab above as time marches on, though.

Google Now is fast becoming one of Android's defining features. But, if some recent additions to Chromium are anything to go by, the nifty little life-predictor could well be finding its way to Chrome browsers, too. An entry in theChromium project code site titled "Show Google Now notifications in Chrome" along with some code revisions for "Creating a skeleton for Google Now for Chrome implementation" hints that the idea is, at least, at some level of development. This of course means that the service would leap out of its current mobile OS restraints, and become available to a much wider audience -- at least those using some portion of the Google ecosystem -- and not just its Android platform. The code was spotted by an eagle-eyed François Beaufort, who points out the reference to it working with Chrome's desktop notifications. While we wait for more official word, we guess a card to notify us of when this might be coming would be too much to ask?

Over the last month, both game publishers and gaming communities alike were surprised to find their GameSpy multiplayer support suddenly disabled by GLU Mobile, who purchased GameSpy from IGN this August. Many games, including Neverwinter Nights 1 & 2, Microsoft Flight Simulator X, Swat 4,Sniper Elite, Hidden and Dangerous 2, Wings of War, Star Wars: Battlefront are no longer able to find (and in some cases even host) multiplayer games. While games like Neverwinter Nights are still able to directly connect to servers if players know the IP address, less-fortunate gamers expressed outrage on GLU Mobile's 'Powered by GameSpy' Facebook page. In an open letter to their Sniper Elite gaming community today, UK game developer Rebellion explained it was helpless to change the situation: 'A few weeks ago, the online multiplayer servers for Sniper Elite were suddenly switched off by Glu, the third-party service we had been paying to maintain them. This decision by Glu was not taken in consultation with us and was beyond our control. We have been talking to them since to try and get the servers turned back on. We have been informed that in order to do so would cost us tens of thousands of pounds a year — far in excess of how much we were paying previously. We also do not have the option to take the multiplayer to a different provider. Because the game relies on Glu and Gamespy's middleware, the entire multiplayer aspect of the game would have to be redeveloped by us, again, at the cost of many tens of thousands of pounds."

Eurogamer has reported that famed D&D and computer game designer Colin McComb is working on aspiritual sequel to Planescape: Torment. The game will be set outside of the Planescape campaign setting due to an inability to come to an agreement with Wizards of the Coast. The lead designer on the original game, Chris Avellone, has apparently given his blessing."McComb posted recently about the nature of Planescape and what would define a new game. He wrote, "Any setting that rewards the player for internal exploration (certainly deeper than, 'Can I hit it? How much loot does it have?') could host a similar story. As long as there’s a fantastical element to the world–whether straight fantasy or science-fantasy–these questions become possible and desirable. The farther away we stray from comfortable routine, the more likely we are to challenge ourselves, trying to define our place in the world. A boring setting frequently leads to boring questions; we know the drill and don’t have to examine it closely. But a fantastic setting forces us to re-examine the world, to take it in a fresh light, and to see that our fundamental truths may be flawed. That is at the heart of a Torment story

Great Big War Game, a popular iOS and Android app, made only £52 in its first week on Windows RT. In an angry blog post titled 'Windows RT — Born to fail,' UK-based developer Rubicon blamed Microsoft for the paltry sum and said it won't be bringing any more of its titles to the fledgling platform. It seems Microsoft refused to promote the app as it would only run on Windows RT devices. However, Microsoft quickly got in touch with Rubicon, and the post was deleted and replaced with an apologetic responsesaying, 'Microsoft have graciously decided work with us to iron out the problems and get us past this incident.' Rubicon will be hoping that £52 figure improves quickly, as it spent £10,000 porting the game to Windows RT.

Unreal technology brings realistic environments to soldier training
A US defence firm has licenced Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 3 to develop military training simulations.
Defence technology and software firm IPKeys Technologies licenced UE3 from Applied Research Associates. Its flagship simulation is the IED Gaming and Modeling Environment (I-GAME), which be powered by Unreal Engine 3 from now on.
I-GAME’s focuses on training Warfighters techniques, tactics and procedures for Counter-IED, providing 3D virtual environment for mission planners.
This serves the mission planner with sophisticated AI and a multitude of game assets, which will provide a fully immersive virtual environment for the Warfighter.
“With Unreal Engine 3, IPKeys can now create the most realistic maps, locales, conditions, materials and virtual soldiers to match exactly what the Warfighter sees, uses and knows,” said Kirk Hymes, director for Modeling and Simulation Applications and US Marine Corps Programs at IPKeys.

Back in June, Facebook introduced the web, iOS, and Android-optimised App Center. The platform is designed to simplify gaming for users while enriching the mobile experience, ranking high-quality apps based on player feedback.
The social network has now compiled a list of the top 25 rated Facebook games – inclusive of those built for Facebook mobile – launched in 2012 and says music trivia game SongPop bagged the number one spot, while mobile games Dragon City and Bike Race took the second and third places, respectively.
SongPop's popularity is no secret, reaching 25m unique players within three months of launching and four million daily active users.
Facebook said that while 56 per cent are only available for the desktop web, the remaining 44 per cent of social games are ready for mobile across iPhone, iPad and Android.
International development is on the rise too, with most of the Facebook games produced outside of the US in countries including France, Spain, the UK, Brazil, South Korea and Australia.

Component manufacturer Mushkin has announced that it will offer the 'world's first' 480GB mSATA SSD in 2013.
Until now, the largest size drive available for ultrabooks had been 256GB, and whilst Apple offered an upgrade of up to 512GB with its MacBook Air, there are use a small number of third party SSDs available offering such a high capacity.
Given the size constraints of ultrabooks, they are unable to fit standard 2.5-inch SATA SSDs into their frame, and therefore use a smaller device known as mini-SATA.
Mushkin's small yet sizeable drive will offer up to 480GB storage space, transfer speeds of up to 6Gb/s and will be released in January 2013 with a hefty price tag of $500.

The Humble THQ Bundle received a couple little bonus additions today, in the form of Titan Quest and the Red Faction: Armageddon downloadable content "Path of War." Titan Quest was a Diablo-esque RPG created by the now shuttered Iron Lore studios. Red Faction: Armageddon's "Path of War" DLC was released shortly after THQ announced it would abandon the franchise.
The Humble THQ Bundle, which includes a cornucopia of the publisher's games, earned over $2 million in 24 hours. With six days to go on the pay-what-you-want bundle, it's currently pulled in $3.7 million, with the average purchase of the eight-game bundle a mere $5.58. That's about four and half shares of THQ stock.
Update: Little bit of confusion about whether those who previously purchased the bundle receive the new items. Yes, you do. Follow the link you received in your purchase confirmation email.

I bet publishers love LinkedIn. This time an employee of Ubisoft Massive in Sweden - key studio involved in making Far Cry 3 - has blabbed about working on an "AAA Next-Gen Online RPG" (spotted by PlayStation Lifestyle).Massive entertainment!
Next-gen was a phrase bandied about for years to describe current gen projects because it made them sound a bit flashier. But now we're so close to next-gen machinery what else can he mean? He also lists the project as starting in October 2012 and its contents as "top secret", which all tallies with an actual next-gen project.Massive Entertainment lists the same project on its website, albeit without the "next-gen" bit. There the project is known as "Online RPG", according to a lead level designer job vacancy."Massive is looking for an experienced Lead Level Designer to join an international team working on a AAA Online RPG," the post advertises. "In this position you will lead a Level Design team in building the best gameplay experiences ever conceived. For any game. Ever."Experience making third-person action games is asked for but no specific MMO experience is required. "Experience working on an online multiplayer, co-operative or open-world game project" is a bonus. Sounds like this Online RPG is less an MMO and more of an evolution of Assassin's Creed multiplayer or something like that. There's no mention of platforms.

UPDATE: THQ has confirmed Eurogamer's previous suspicions - that the publisher still holds the rights to Games Workshop's Warhammer 40K licence.Rights to fantasy-based Warhammer games used to belong to EA, publisher of Warhammer Online. It is the future of these rights that Creative Assembly holds.ORIGINAL STORY: Total War developer The Creative Assembly has signed a deal to make multiple games in the Warhammer universe, publisher Sega has announced.Creative Assembly now has five projects on the go, including Total War: Rome 2 and its in-development Aliens game. The studio's first Warhammer project is not due to launch until "beyond 2013".Relic Entertainment, owned by struggling publisher THQ, has previously made games based on Warhammer 40,000. So has Sega poached the whole Warhammer licence or just the fantasy version? When Eurogamer spoke to Sega UK, the publisher said it could not add any more detail to its initial statement, but it reiterated that Creative Assembly's focus was on the "Warhammer universe of fantasy battles", which sounds like the colourful elves-and-wizards Warhammer to us, and not the grim-darkness-of-the-far-future-ONLY-WAR 40K version, which presumably remains at THQ.We're checking with THQ now to see whether that's the case."With this year being our 25th anniversary it seems fitting for us to embark on such a dream project with such a well-established partner," Tim Heaton, studio director at Creative Assembly said of the deal. "The incredibly rich and detailed Warhammer world is something we grew up with, and has left an indelible imprint on us as both designers and gamers."We'll be doing the Warhammer universe justice in a way that has never been attempted before. We're bringing those 25 years of experience and expertise in extremely high-scoring games to bear, delivering a Warhammer experience that videogamers will absolutely love."

Sega has revealed the first playable faction in Rome 2: Total War.
The Roman faction is detailed on the new Total War Wiki, which will eventually feature maps showing off each faction's starting position, plus information on their varying strengths.
Sega says of the different factions: "Representing key powers within the Greco-Roman, Barbarian, and Eastern cultures, every faction features its own agents and political system, and three tech trees representing civic, military and engineering disciplines."Each will have its own dilemmas to face and different styles of army to manage. Certain factions - such as Rome - are split into a number of playable families, which bring further unique benefits to their base faction traits."

EA has issued permanent bans to a number of FIFA 13 players for attempting to manipulate the in-game economy of the popular Ultimate Team mode.
Ultimate Team was temporarily taken offline earlier this week so that EA could "restore a level playing field", but the service is now back up and running."Earlier this week, a very small number of users attempted to gain an unfair advantage by manipulating coins," EA explained.
"To ensure a fair economy for all our users we decided to take FUT offline in order to restore a level playing field.
"We take issues like this very seriously," it added. "Permanent bans for FIFA 13 have been served to all users who attempted to gain an unfair advantage.
"We would like to thank you, the community, for your patience during the downtime. We'll continue to maintain the best experience for all fans of FIFA 13: Ultimate Team."
Earlier this week EA released a FIFA 13 title update introducing fixes for issues including freezes and invisible balls.
