Plans for 64-bit Firefox for Windows have been put on hold by Mozilla in a bid to concentrate more on the 32-bit version. Eliminating the 64-bit nightly builds was proposed by Benjamin Smedberg, a Firefox developer, last week. Some of the reasons Smedberg cited include missing plugins for 64-bit version; lack of windowproc hooking which facilitates smooth functioning of whatever plugins are available; and the inability to work on the crash reports submitted for the 64-bit versions because they were not on high priority. The proposal, it seems, has been accepted as is evident from this bug report."The bug tracking system seems unable to differentiate between 64-bit and 32-bit builds, causing a few issues since Windows 64-bit builds are much buggier. They also intend to reintroduce 64-bit Windows nightlies some time next year.

Free-to-play title set to be released in North America and Western Europe 'in the near future'
More than five million players have signed up to Crytek’s free-to-play shooter Warface in Russia, the studio has revealed.
Developed by Cytek Kiev, the title attracted more than one million users within its first month of release, and that number has continued to rise ever since.
Warface was also recently voted by players as the best online game in Russia’s Runet Awards.
“Reaching the five million registered users mark speaks volumes about the quality and appeal of Warface,” said Mail.Ru group game division VP Vladimir Nikolsky.
“With a combination of first-class visuals and gameplay that is second to none, Warface stands out from the crowd and promises to attract even more attention from players in the future.”

Crytek's free-to-play FPS finds success with Mail.Ru
Crytek has hit a new milestone in Russia, attracting 5 million of the country's gamers to its free-to-play FPS Warface.
The game is published by the Mail.Ru Group in Russia, and scored over a million registered users in its first month there.
“Reaching the five million registered users mark speaks volumes about the quality and appeal of Warface,” said Mail.Ru's Vladimir Nikolsky.
“With a combination of first-class visuals and game play that is second to none, Warface stands out from the crowd and promises to attract even more attention from players in the future.”
This week the game was also given a Runet Award for its contribution to the Russian-language internet.
Earlier this month Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli spoke about the success of the company's CryEngine in the West.
"In the Western world, we are getting very close to where Unreal is through a number of licenses that are not disclosed," Yerli told GamesIndustry International.
"But in the Asian area, in the online area, we are actually outpacing Epic right now, despite the fact that we have not really pushed marketing or a strategy to become number one there. The engine just grew to be number one in the MMO and online space, especially in Korea and China."

FM 2013 is Sports Interactive’s most ambitious game yet. And if it can stay piracy-free for a few weeks, next year’s title will be even greater.
MCV discusses the game’s future with studio boss Miles Jacobson.
You’ve introduced a cut-down ‘classic mode’ to this year’s Football Manager. Why do that?
A few years ago in one of our post mortem meetings, I sat there and asked who in the studio had been playing the game. Most put their hands up but I was surprised at some of the people who didn’t because they’d been with us for a long time. I asked them why and they said: ‘Well, I’ve got kids now and don’t have time anymore.’
We’d been looking to do something console-wise again anyway. We went off and did a load of research; we did a poll with a few thousand people and presented the the idea of FM Classic as a console game. Everyone loved the idea but people were coming back saying “we don’t want it on console, we’ve got partners watching TV, we can play games on our laptop.” FM takes too long for that quick hour session and so that’s when we decided to do Classic in the same box as the PC title.
Our other new mode, Challenge mode, came about because it had done so well on the handheld and we thought it was worth adding.
FM 2013 has over 900 new features. Is that more than usual?
Yes. Last year, we celebrated over 800. This year over 900. There are more people in the studio now than we’ve had previously. We’ve taken on 17 or 18 people this year. We’re up to 90 now, which still makes us quite small. We’ve been somewhat ambitious this year, what with the fact that some of these new features were completely new game modes.

Google's been known to pay $60,000 for information on remotely exploitable vulnerabilities in its Chrome web browser. So, when a researcher says that he has one, but isn't interested in selling it, eyebrows get raised. And that's just what's happening this week, with Google saying it will wait and see what Georgian researcher Ucha Gobejishvili has up his sleeve in a presentation on Saturday at the Malcon conference in New Delhi. Gobejishvili has claimed that he will demonstrate a remotely exploitable hole in the Chrome web browser at Malcon. He described the security hole in Chrome as a 'critical vulnerability' in a Chrome DLL. 'It has silent and automatically (sp) download function and it works on all Windows systems,' he told Security Ledger. However, more than a few questions hang over Gobejishvili's talk. The researcher said he discovered the hole in July, but hasn't bothered to contact Google. He will demonstrate the exploit at MalCon, and have a 'general discussion' about it, but won't release source code for it. 'I know this is a very dangerous issue that's why I am not publishing more details about this vulnerability,' he wrote. Google said that, with no information on the hole, it can only wait to hear the researcher's Malcon presentation before it can assess the threat to Chrome users."

Steam has amassed more than 50 million users, Sega’s VP of digital distribution has said.
Speaking at the London Games Conference 2012, John Clark revealed that Valve’s digital distribution service had also reached five million peak concurrent users.
Other interesting stats for the platform included the Big Picture mode beta, which has grown to 500,000 subscribers since its launch in September this year.
Big Picture is designed to allow users to display Steam on their TV’s, also enabling them to control the platform through a keyboard and mouse or game controller.
Steam Workshop meanwhile, which allows users to create their own content and items for games on the store, has garnered more than 300,000 items, with a total 106 million community contributions.

It's been a year since OnLive launched within the UK and it’s been a tough one to say the least.
After entering emergency bankruptcy earlier this year, the cloud gaming service has undergone a behind-the-scenes transition that has saved the firm from the brink of closure, but not without its casualties. Now, following a managerial shake-up, OnLive looks set to get back on track.
Could you give us a brief introduction of what Onlive is?
OnLive is cloud gaming. It allows users to play the latest titles from a range of devices including PC, Mac, HDTVs, tablet PCs and smartphones, eliminating the need for high-end gaming equipment. Users have access to OnLive’s portfolio of over 300 games on-demand without the need to queue or endure long download times.
Gamers have a choice when it comes to getting their games: retail, digital distribution and cloud gaming. Why should they choose the latter?
Well, what OnLive gives you is a very opportunistic experience. You log on and everything is there before your eyes readily available. You can access and experience things very quickly without spending a lot of time or money. There are various ways of purchasing games or trying them before you buy via our three-day rental. We see ourselves as an addition to standard and digital distribution.

Hawken has begun its third and final closed beta event, starting this week and going through until December 6. Players already invited can download the client from the official website, jump in and start shooting. You won't need to re-install, the developer says, if you've played in a previous closed beta event.
Meteor Entertainment has presale packs available for the free-to-play shooter, with boosts and extra equipment available for those who know they're ready to spend some cash. But if you're not yet sold (or haven't gotten a chance to play), the game will go into Open Beta and become available to the public on December 12.

It may not be quite as practical as the mobile version if you find yourself lost in the mall this holiday season, but those looking to plan their shopping route ahead of time can now finally take advantage of Google's indoor maps in their desktop web browser. That new addition, just rolled out today, does come with a bit of a catch, though: the desktop version of indoor maps is only offering the main floor of buildings for the time being, with no word yet on when the ability to view additional levels will be added (something that can currently be done in the Android app). Of course, the availability of indoor maps is still quite a bit more limited than some of Google's other map offerings, but it does now include over 10,000 floor plans in a number of different countries.

Peter Molyneux has become the latest celebrated developer to try crowdfunding a return to his roots. Molyneux's 22 Cans studio today launched a Kickstarter page for Project Godus, a spiritual successor to Molyneux's original god game Populous.
The studio is hoping to raise £450,000 ($717,000) for development, with the game itself expected to launch within a year for PC and mobile devices. (Other platforms could be added if Project Godus exceeds its funding goal.) 22 Cans said that it has turned to its fans for funding because it "allows us to stay a small independent team with unlimited freedom in our creativity."
In the pitch video, Molyneux proposes Project Godus as a throwback to the work of his previous studio, Bullfrog.
"What I would love to do is go back to those glory days of Bullfrog, go back to when we focused ultimately on the gameplay," Molyneux said. "And with the team at 22 Cans, with your help and your direction, recreate the entire god game genre."
While Molyneux has said he has just one game left to make before he retires, Project Godus isn't it. The Kickstarter page notes that if the game is finished, "we'll have taken another huge step towards the big game which will be the culmination of 22cans' 22 experiments."

Virgin’s competitive gaming venture is determined to expand its UK userbase.
The service, which allows consumers to play games online to win money, was launched in the US in 2010 and the UK on October 5th this year.
“We saw the demand for FIFA in North America, and obviously the UK is the biggest market for that series,” European boss Andrew Greaves told MCV. “We’ve already got quite a lot of European players through our US?site, so it made sense to bring it over here and make it more suitable to the UK audience.”
Virgin Gaming launched a heavyweight media campaign last month, using a mix of TV and online ads to promote the service.
“Virgin Gaming is as much about playing with friends as it is about the tournaments.”

In an amusing twist that undoubtedly spells the end of some hapless manager's career, Microsoft has accidentally gifted pirates with a free, fully-functioning Windows 8 license key. As you have probably surmised, this isn't intentional — Microsoft hasn't suddenly decided to give pirates an early Christmas present (though the $40 upgrade deal from Windows 8 Release Preview is something of a pirate amnesty). ... The bug involves the Key Management Service, which is part of Microsoft's Volume Licensing system. Pirates have already hacked the KMS to activate Windows 8 for 180 days — but this is just a partial activation. Now it turns out that the free Media Center Pack license keys that Microsoft is giving out until January 31 2013 can be used on a KMS-activated copy of Windows 8 to turn it into a fully licensed copy of Windows 8 Pro.

LGC12: EA Play4Free VP Sean Decker shares his secrets and advice for being an F2P success
Free-to-play games on average lose 70 per cent of their userbase within the first day, EA's play4Free VP has said.
Speaking at the London Games Conference 2012, Sean Decker provided a wealth of information for developers about how to become a success in the F2P market.
He said that as well as typically losing 70 per cent of users ithin the first 24 hours, most games will often have just 15 per cent of their initial player count after seven days.
Decker explain that users would often as quickly during the period after a game's release as being free meant no time or monetary commitment had yet to be made to the title.
"Developers need to get them to commit to the product for the long term," said Decker.

ME spoke to PacketVideo's Rick Schwartz about the company's Twonky media sharing service back in May; mobile apps that allow videos and other content to be 'beamed' across devices, such as from smartphone to TV.
This time, senior VP of consumer products and services, Jerome Rota (the co-founder of DivX), offered his vision for the connected home to reiterate the firm's ambitions, as well as his expectations for what results second-screen usage (mobile device use combined with TV viewing) will yield.
The second-screen trend is taking various forms, whether it's Shazam's ad tagging platform or Zeebox's TV-centric social network, but Rota is sceptical of the real user experience Shazam can offer.
"I'm not sure the app will be successful beyond discovering songs. A viewer would have to be a huge fan of a product to tag an advert to receive even more ads – it doesn't make sense. The brand already has the interest of the buyer, so there's no need to try and impose even more advertising upon them," he told ME.
"Twonky is designed to put users at the centre of their media world, the purpose of the service is to enable the seamless movement of content within the home. TV is the key because it's the natural means of video consumption.
"And with the decline in the price of tablets, which are now as low as $100, it's easy to see why the media devices are becoming a nice addition to TV, effectively replacing the need for remote controls in due course."

The WITCH is back! After a three-year restoration project at The National Museum of Computing, the Harwell Dekatron computer has gone on show today as the world's oldest original working digital computer.
Also known as the WITCH, the computer is now in its seventh decade and fifth home. Originally put together in 1951, the computer weights approximately 2.5 tonnes and features 828 flashing Dekatron valves, 480 relays and a bank of paper tape readers.
With its flashing lights and clattering printers and readers, it's expected to provide an inspiring display for visiting school groups and the general public keen to learn about the museum's rich computer heritage.
Kevin Murrell, trustee of TNMOC who initiated the restoration project, said: "In 1951 the Harwell Dekatron was one of perhaps a dozen computers in the world, and since then it has led a charmed life surviving intact while its contemporaries were recycled or destroyed. As the world's oldest original working digital computer, it provides a wonderful contrast to our Rebuild of the wartime Colossus, the world's first semi-programmable electronic computer."
The Harwell Dekatron computer first ran at Harwell Atomic Energy Research Establishment in 1951 where it automated the calculations that were being performed by people using mechanical hand calculators. Designed for reliability rather than speed, it could carry on relentlessly for days at a time delivering its error-free results.
