The president of Microsoft’s Windows and Windows Live divisions, Steven Sinofsky, has announced that he is leaving the company with immediate effect.
In a statement, Sinofsky wrote: “It is impossible to count the blessings I have received over my years at Microsoft. I am humbled by the professionalism and generosity of everyone I have had the good fortune to work with at this awesome company.”
Sinofsky had worked at Microsoft since 1989, when he joined as a software design engineer fresh out of university. By 1999 he was a senior vice president of Office, in charge of developing the productivity software, and in 2006 he was elevated to senior vice president in charge of the Windows and Windows Live group.
However, his abrupt departure has led some to speculate that the decision may have been spurred by a clash with Microsoft’s CEO Steve Ballmer. This speculation has been partially fuelled by Ballmer curt statement regarding Sinofsky’s resignation, which simply read: “I am grateful for the many years of work that Steven has contributed to the company.”

November 13th, 2012, 23:05 Posted By: wraggster
The Sims Studio has announced the release of its latest Sims 3expansion pack.
Available throughout North America from today, UK players will only have to wait another three days until they can get in on the action.
First announced back in August, EA said that a ‘seasons’ expansion pack has been one of the most highly-requested themes amongst players.
“The Sims 3 Seasons will offer fans more than just sunny days to tell their stories by dramatically transforming each world from one season to the next,” said Ryan Vaughan, producer for The Sims. “In a first for The Sims, new festival lots and holiday celebrations have added ways for players to truly revel in the spirit of each season.”
In addition to dramatic weather effects and seasonal celebrations, The Sims 3 Seasons introduces all-new activities that will add a fun and festive spirit to every season. Sims can enjoy the unique beauty of the changing seasons as they create snowmen and snow angels, or sip hot chocolate beneath the mistletoe against the backdrop of a winter wonderland, go egg-hunting, enter a pie-eating contest, or toss some horseshoes, just to name a few.

Just in time for the holidays, a slew of new Windows 8 Ultrabooks has arrived to make your shopping list all the more difficult. Not only must you settle on a screen size, you also have touch-enabled machines to consider -- and don't forget those Atom-powered hybrids, which pull double duty as standalone slates and full-fledged laptops. The deliberations may be endless, but we've whittled down the playing field to some prime contenders. Just hold your horses -- some of these slick machines are drumming up extra anticipation with release dates well into the holiday shopping season.
[h=2]Low-end / mid-range[/h]
[h=5]Sony VAIO T13[/h]
The T13 Ultrabook has been around for some time now, but it still stands out for its many configuration options and robust spec list -- including a Core i5 Ivy Bridge CPU, a 500GB hybrid hard drive with 4GB of RAM and a slick 3.54-pound metal chassis -- offered at a surprisingly wallet-friendly price. To usher in the Windows 8 era, Sony recently added an edge-to-edge glass touch display as an option for this 13-inch machine, which makes it an even stronger contender for the students and casual users on your list.
Key specs: 13-inch (1,366 x 768) capacitive touchscreen, Core i5-3317U processor with 4GB of RAM, 500GB hybrid hard drive, Intel HD Graphics 4000, 0.75 inches thick, 3.54 pounds.
Price: $870 from Sony
[h=4]You might also like...[/h]
[h=5]Toshiba Satellite U945[/h]The U945 is a bargain-priced Ultrabook, and though it may sport a blue plastic coating rather than a more premium aluminum finish, it packs solid specs: a Core i5 processor, 6GB of RAM and a 500GB hard drive paired with a 32GB SSD for speedy boot-ups.
Price: $730 from Toshiba
[h=5]Samsung Series 5 Ultra Touch[/h]Touch doesn't have to come at a huge premium, as the Series 5 Ultra Touch so deftly demonstrates. For $850, you get a 13-inch panel ready to handle finger input, a 500GB hard drive with 24GB of ExpressCache and a Core i3 Ivy Bridge CPU.
Price: $850 from Best Buy
[h=2]High-end[/h]
[h=5]HP Spectre XT TouchSmart[/h]
We're fans of the 13.3-inch Envy Spectre XT, which sports a great keyboard and touchpad and offers impressive performance in an attractive all-metal package. The 15.6-inch TouchSmart is even more enticing -- with a 1080p IPS display (with touch support, of course) a generous selection of ports, Beats Audio and full copies of Adobe Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements. The TouchSmart won't go on sale till December, but you can add it to your shopping list in the meantime.
Key specs: 15.6-inch (1,920 x 1,080) IPS display, Ivy Bridge processors, 0.7 inches thick, 4.77 pounds.
Price: $1,400 (expected in December)
[h=4]You might also like...[/h]
[h=5]Acer Aspire S7[/h]Yes, Acer's 13-inch Aspire S7 offers a bright 1080p IPS display, but its panel goes above and beyond with a design that can lie completely flat. Acer sweetens the deal with an included USB-to-Ethernet adapter and carrying case.
Price: $1,375 on Amazon
[h=5]MacBook Air 13-inch[/h]Viewed alongside the new crop of touch-enabled Windows 8 machines, Apple's ultraportable may have a little less luster. But if the beneficiary of your generous gift giving can live with keyboard input, the Air's Core i5 power, Mountain Lion and best-in-class glass trackpad are a winning combo.
Price: $1,128 on Amazon
[h=2]Hybrids[/h]
[h=5]HP Envy x2[/h]
HP's take on the Atom-powered laptop / tablet craze is an 11-inch slate with a detachable keyboard dock. It's not the form factor that's impressive, though: specs include NFC, Beats Audio and a 400-nit IPS display. There's also pen support, so users can interact with the device via the touchscreen, keyboard or stylus. Beginning November 14th, you'll be able to purchase this lightweight, aluminum-built hybrid for $850 -- hardly chump change, but you get a lot for those buckaroos.
Key specs: 11-inch (1,366 x 768) display, Clover Trail processor, 64GB of built-in storage, 0.33 inches thick, 1.5 pounds / 1.6 pounds with dock.
Price: $850 (beginning November 14th)
[h=4]You might also like...[/h]
[h=5]Lenovo IdeaTab Lynx[/h]With a dual-core Clover Trail processor, 32GB of solid-state storage and an 11.6-inch IPS display, the Lynx looks to be a solid standalone tablet. Add in the $150 dock and you get 16 hours of battery life -- when this hybrid hits the market in December.
Price: $600 and up
[h=5]ASUS Transformer Book[/h]With a spun-metal lid and a sleek silhouette, this convertible looks deceptively similar to the ASUS Zenbook. But detach the tablet from its keyboard dock and you have a Core i7-powered 13-inch slate. Look for it to drop in mid-December.
Price: TBD
[h=4]Giveaway[/h]
[h=5]HTC One X[/h]Ready to take home one of AT&T's hottest smartphones? Today's offering is the tried-and-true HTC One X, which remains one of our top picks on the US carrier's LTE network. To enter for your chance to win, be sure to review our full guidelines, then leave a comment below.

Minecraft continues to unearth new players, with its PC version now up to over 8 million sales. Mojang owner Markus 'Notch' Persson revealed the milestone on Twitter, which comes almost three months to the day his game broke the 7 million barrier.
With sales of the XBLA version now over 4 million, our maths bods tell usMinecraft can now boast over 12 million sales on PC and Xbox, at least. That's excluding the Pocket editions, which collectively are into seven figures too.
If you haven't yet got that lots of people play Minecraft, you should know itrecently toppled Modern Warfare 3 as the most played game on Xbox Live. Of course, a certain other Call of Duty may have something to say about that in the very near future.

Treyarch's Security and Enforcement Policy for Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 can serve as a guide to keeping you playing and safe from bans. Most of the rules are simple: don't use any hacks or modded code, don't use "unsupported" external hardware or software, don't be offensive or racist.
With the new livestreaming functionality comes a few new rules specific to it, though they cover familiar territory: "Any user who is found to have offensive or unauthorized content in their live stream is subject to penalty," Treyarch warns. "Offensive content includes but is not limited to foul language, racially charged language, and nudity. Unauthorized content includes but is not limited to unlicensed music, TV shows, movies and brand logos." Minor offenses will result in temporary bans from streaming; "extreme offenders" will be reported to streaming providers (YouTube) for account deletion.
Consult the full rules here, and don't be the kind of person who needs to consult the rules.

The original Doom 3 is back on Steam.Hot on the heels of the release of Doom 3: BFG Edition last month gamers noticed the original version of the first-person shooter had been removed from Steam.This meant that, at the time, the only way to buy the original version from Steam was to pay £76 for the Super id Software Pack. Gamers on the Steam forum complained about the move, particularly in light of widespread struggles in getting BFG Edition, which does not support mods, to run smoothly.Now, it's back.“On the heels of Doom 3 BFG Edition's release, we heard feedback from fans: you still wanted a chance to purchase the game's original 2004 release,” read a statement on theBethesda Blog.“Beginning this week, the original version of Doom 3 and its expansion, Resurrection of Evil, are available at a lower price.”Now, Doom 3 is £5.99, Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil is £3.99 and the Doom 3 Pack is £7.99.“For players with the BFG Edition of the game, you'll be happy to know that we'll be releasing the GPL source code in the near future. Stay tuned for updates,” Bethesda added.

Crytek intends to do 'radical and new' things with the Crysis series beyond Crysis 3.
A fourth game is on the cards, Crytek boss Cevat Yerli told Eurogamer, and the developer feels the closure of the trilogy with Crysis 3 allows them great 'flexibility' for the next title."We are excited about the DNA of Crysis and of the franchise. There can be literally tonnes of titles out there within the franchise. Unlike Far Cry, this time around we feel very flexible about Crysis," said Yerli, who revealed that a fourth game is planned, but is not yet even in pre-production.
"I wouldn't name it Crysis 4 at this stage because it would be misleading," he added. "We want to finalise Prophet's story and Crysis 4 would imply the story just moves on.
"Normally in this time right now we would already have pre-production going on, but because we want to make this something much more radical and new we are looking at it as a bit more of a long term thing. It's too early to talk about it for these reasons," Yerli went on.

It can't be easy, running a modern IT department. Not only are people making ever more graphics-hungry demands on your servers, but NVIDIA and AMD are locked in an unending spec war that can make it hard to keep up with the market. The FirePro S10000 is merely the latest salvo: a dual-GPU, server-focused version of the W9000 that greatly increases overall compute power, delivering 5.91 TFLOPs of single precision calculations and 1.48 TFLOPS of dual precision performance in a single PCIe 3.0 card with 6GB of GDDR5 RAM. Even though the Graphics Core Next GPUs have been slightly underclocked to 825MHz, and even though they technically offer better performance per watt than a single-GPU configuration, their overall 375w power draw could still get you in trouble with your local power station. That level of consumption is around 50 percent higher than a regular server card like the S9000 orTesla K10 and it may well require you to research new server cases and coolers in addition to weighing up the $3,600 cost for the component itself. See? This was never going to be straightforward.

We found ourselves quite enamored with Samsung's latest entry into the Chromebook line, mostly thanks to its incredibly low price of $250. Now Acer's done gone even lower: $199 for its new C7 Chromebook. It's an 11.6-inch (1,366 x 768) machine with a 320GB HDD and an Intel processor, rated for 3.5 hours of battery life -- just about half that of Samsung's ARM-powered entry. It still manages to be under an inch thick and packs a full-size Ethernet port, plus 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi, three USB 2.0 ports and both HDMI and VGA output. (Cellular connectivity does not appear to be an option.) The C7 is available starting tomorrow at the link below, and while we know many of you still aren't sold on the Chromebook idea, at a buck less than $200 maybe it's time to start pondering more seriously.

After launching a line of Intel packing VivoBook's, Asus is letting AMD in on the action with a Trinity APU A8-4555M-powered model that's just scored an FCC ticket to ride. The 1.55 kg (3.41 lb), 13.3-inch, 1920 x 1080 multitouch model looks to be targeted to the multimedia crowd with a 128GB SSD, 500GB HDD, 4GB max RAM, 720p camera, Bluetooth 4.0 and Bang & Olufsen ICEpower sound tech. It's already popped up in Europe for around €900 ($1,150) and appears to be headed to India now, but there's no indication if or when US AMD lovers may be able to grab one.

Valve president Gabe Newell has has revealed Valve is working on a next generation successor to the Source Engine.
Rumors of a new engine have been circulating for a while, but confirmation came as Newell spoke before an audience of 4Chan's /4/ users gathered at Valve to celebrate his November 3rd birthday.
"We’ve been working on Valve’s new engine stuff for a while, we’re probably just waiting for a game to roll it out with," said Newell as recorded on Youtube.
Newell also confirmed the Source 2 engine would be completely new, instead of just another update for nearly ten year-old tech.
Source made its debut in Counter-Strike: Source and Half-Life 2 in 2004.

Microsoft has confirmed that DirectX 11.1 will be exclusive to Windows 8.
DirectX 11.1 is the next release of the 3D graphics API and adds, amongst other things, native stereoscopic 3D support, meaning games developed for it will have to include 3D compatibility.
“DirectX 11.1 is part of Windows 8, just like DirectX 11 was part of Windows 7. DirectX 11 was made available for Vista (bing it), but at this point there is no plan for DirectX 11.1 to be made available on Windows 7,” Microsoft’s Daniel Moth revealed on the Microsoft Answers forum.
Microsoft previously employed this tactic with DirectX 11, hoping that its DirectX 11 exclusivity would help encourage adoption of the new OS.
However, with Windows 8 already facing hostility amongst some quarters of the press, Microsoft risks an even bigger backlash with this latest decision.

via http://www.aep-emu.de/
A new version of the multi-system emulators RetroArch (formerly known as SSNES) is released for Windows, XBOX, WII, PS3 and XBOX360.
SSNES is called RetroArch from now on, and ´libsnes´ is called ´libretro´ from now on.
Quote:
What is RetroArch?
RetroArch is a modular multi-system emulator system that is designed to be fast, lightweight, and portable. It has features few other emulators frontends have, such as real-time rewinding and game-aware shading.
What platforms does it support?
RetroArch sets the standard on cross-platform portability right now.
Linux (x86 and x86_64)
Windows (32bit/64bit)
Mac OSX (PPC/Intel)
Playstation 3 (PS3 SDK/PSL1GHT (WIP))
Xbox 1 (XDK)
Xbox 360 (XeXDK/Libxenon)
Wii
Raspberry Pi
OpenPandora
Why is it special?
Right now RetroArch is unique in that it runs the same emulator cores on multiple systems (such as Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, PC, etc).
For each emulator ´core´, RetroArch makes use of a library API that we like to call ´libretro´.
Think of libretro as an interface for emulator and game ports. You can make a libretro port once and expect the same code to run on all the platforms that RetroArch supports. It´s designed with simplicity and ease of use in mind so that the porter can worry about the port at hand instead of having to wrestle with an obfuscatory API.
The purpose of the project is to help ease the work of the emulator/game porter by giving him an API that allows him to target multiple platforms at once without having to redo any code. He doesn´t have to worry about writing input/video/audio drivers - all of that is supplied to him by RetroArch. All he has to do is to have the emulator port hook into the libretro API and that´s it - we take care of the rest.

hypnosec writes with news that two security consultants have found vulnerabilities in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and the CryEngine 3 graphics engine that could harm game makers and players alike. Presenting at the Power of Community (POC2012) security conference, the researchers demonstrated how a denial-of-service attack could affect Modern Warfare 3, and how a server-level attack on CryEngine 3 allowed them to "create a remote shell on a game-player's computer.""'Once you get access to the server, which is basically the interface with the company, you can get access to all of the information on the players through the server,' Ferrante said. In general, game companies don't seem to be very focused on security but rather on performance of the game itself, Ferrante said. Adding security checks can slow down games, and if the companies don't deem the problem a very critical issue, it will usually be ignored. 'These are games that have a very large market,' Auriemma said."

An anonymous reader points out a report at the Guardian of a potential problem for early adopters of the Microsoft Surface tablet. The Touch Cover is one of the available protective covers for the device; it acts as a keyboard, and has both a gyroscope and an accelerometer on board. Unfortunately, some users have found that the edges of the Touch Cover have split open after only a few days of use. "The defect is identical in each case: the cover ... begins to split at its seam where the device attaches magnetically to the main computer. [One developer] was told to return his Touch Cover to Microsoft for a replacement, and Microsoft has been swapping faulty covers for users where it has retail stores. It's unclear whether the problems that people have encountered are due to a faulty batch or are a subtle problem that will become more apparent as more people use it for longer — but the fact that users in the US and the UK have reported the problem suggests that it is not isolated to a single manufacturing batch."

Microsoft recently issued its "Security Bulletin Advance Notification" for this month, detailing which operating systems and software will be updated on November 13th. While many products are being addressed, including Office for Mac, newly released Windows 8 and RT are the most notable entries on the list. The first patches since they hit the market will fix "critical" issues which open them up to "remote code execution." Microsoft hasn't gone into specifics (obviously), but you can register for a webcast being held on the 14th (see source link) should you want enlightening. If you thought your fresh machine or slate was flawless, we're afraid to say it's just another member of the 'Patch Tuesday' club.

Intel's Next Unit of Computing (NUC) is just about ready for store shelves, and Anandtech managed to get their hands on the DC3217BY model to provide us an early inside look at the mini-PC. Clearly aimed at enthusiasts, the motherboard and 4 x 4-inch chassis are all you get out of the box; you'll have to get the memory, the mini PCIe cards and even the power cord separately. Luckily installation looks quite easy -- only four screws hold the chassis and motherboard together. The bottom mini PCIe slot accommodates half height cards (for WiFi, presumably) and you can go ahead and put an mSATA drive or full height card at the top.
As we saw in our IDF hands-on, the NUC holds a Core i3 CPU, HD 4000 graphics, two SoDIMM sockets, mSATA and mini-PCIe interfaces, one to two HDMI and three USB 2.0 connectors. The DC3217BY eschews Gigabit Ethernet (which is available on the DC3217IYE) in favor of a Thunderbolt port. While we initially thought the NUC would go for somewhere around $400, it turns out it'll cost $300 to $320 and will be available from Amazon and Eggdrop in early December. If you're considering getting one for yourself, we recommend taking a peek at the source to get a more intimate look.
