Microsoft’s latest operating system Windows 8 has sold 40m licenses during its first month.
The official Windows blog reports the firm’s CFO Tami Reller revealed the figure earlier today at the Credit Suisse 2012 Annual Technology Conference.
“The journey is just beginning, but I am pleased to announce today that we have sold 40 million Windows 8 licenses so far,” said Reller.
No specifics were mentioned on how new purchases, upgrades, and licenses sold onboard new computers each factored into the figure.
Microsoft also announced that the number of apps in the Windows Store has doubled since launch, standing at over 21,000 as of November 26th.

PCGamesN spotted the above video on YouTube, and a blog post in which Newman explains how he has adapted the Kinect for Windows SDK to work in Garry’s Mod. The results – allowing players to control ragdolls with gesture controls – are, if we’re honest, a little creepy, and should make the machinima videos for which Garry’s Mod is famed even more disturbing.

A rumour is circulating that Intel might be abandoning the model of replaceable or upgradable CPU’s, instead opting for integrated chipsets.
According to the Japanese site PC Watch, the Broadwell family of processors, which will follow the forthcoming Haswell family of third generation Core processors, will put an end to the socketed design of CPUs.
The evidence cited is that, instead of using the land-grid array (LGA) surface mount packages common to current models, Broadwell will use ball-grid array (BGA) packages – a different system which specifically requires that the processor is soldered directly to the motherboard. Visually, the LGA processors have the grid of pins that can be dropped in to a socket, while BGA has a grid of solder balls that sit on the underside and must be fixed in to place.
While in the past, Intel has used both methods, the evidence suggests that in future, the only way to repair or upgrade a processor will be to replace the motherboard.
Meanwhile, Semi Accurate reports that Intel has kept motherboard manufacturers in the dark as to its intentions.

Time hasn't been kind to The Old Republic. It certainly doesn't feel like a game that came out last Christmas, even if at launch its technology and largely reskinned Warcraft mechanics were more a base for BioWare to flex its narrative muscles with than a big leap forward for massively multiplayer games. Now, not even a year later, with the game recently turned free-to-play, going back to explore its worlds feels like archeology. Sometimes palaeontology. And the story that BioWare hoped to tell is unlikely to have a happy ending. From launch, The Old Republic's key problem was that it was stuck serving two very different masters - the personal storylines it wanted everyone to focus on and the subscription fee whose dark shadow loomed over all. It offered narrative beats far beyond what any other MMO had dared, with a choice of eight different character classes, each with a unique, branching story. It then suffocated them with padding, slow levelling and an endless array of tedious stock quests that no amount of dialogue could jazz up. (You also had to spend a ridiculous amount of time running around to check in on people despite owning a bloody cellphone. That bugged me. Just saying.)None of this has changed. What has, though, is that story is no longer an exciting novelty, while World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria, Guild Wars 2 and The Secret World have all surpassed The Old Republic's stilted dialogue, basic cinematography and forgettable characters. In Pandaria, phasing and scripting comes together for a more dynamic experience with a good sense of humour. Guild Wars 2 remembers that an MMO is expected to be a multiplayer experience first, layering its plotting and single-player content on top far more skilfully. The Secret World offers infinitely better writing. Yes, they all have issues, especially with pacing. They still trounce The Old Republic's attempts, rendering it drier than moondust.

November 27th, 2012, 00:12 Posted By: wraggster
Hotline Miami creator Jonatan "Cactus" Söderström has officially revealed a sequel to his award winning colourful killing spree simulator. The announcement came over Twitter where Söderström said, "Working while listening to the sweet tunes of a preliminary Hotline Miami 2 soundtrack that we've put together during the weekend."When asked if by "we" he meant himself and Hotline Miami guest composer/indie game developer Jasper Byrne, Söderström clarified that he was simply referring to the studio, Dennaton Games."Music wise I'm not sure for the second game yet," he said. "Last time we had nine different musicians doing the soundtrack. Looks like a couple of them might do more tracks for the sequel, but we've been looking at some other bands as well. Want to keep it fresh."Previously Söderström said in an interview with Eurogamer that Hotline Miami's DLC would be "about as long as the full game." We asked if this DLC had been expanded into a full, standalone game, to which he replied, "Yeah, it seems like it will end up bigger (in terms of the number of levels we've got planned) than the first, so it feels reasonable to release it as a full game rather than a DLC."It may not be out for awhile though as Söderström added, "We've barely begun working on it though, still got things we need to patch with the first game, so that's the main priority right now."

Valve's digital service posts record peak number of gamers over the weekend
Valve's Steam was busier than ever this weekend. On Sunday morning, the online PC gaming service hadnearly 6.05 million concurrent users, its largest tally to date.
Traffic on the service was no doubt boosted by the company's Autumn Sale promotion. The annual stretch of daily game deals saw recently released titles like XCOM, Dishonored, and Borderlands II on sale at discounts up to 50 percent.
Steam boasts a total membership of more than 50 million users since it officially launched in September of 2003. The service broke the 5 million concurrent user mark in 2011. Demand from game makers to get their products on the Steam Store became so overwhelming to Valve that the company established its Steam Greenlight crowd-sourced approval system earlier this year to deal with the influx of submissions.

Hot off the heels of Steam's Autumn sale, Call of Duty: Black Ops II has retained the top spot, fighting off fierce competition from heavily discounted competitors.
Both XCOM: Enemy Unknown and Borderlands II climbed back up the chart as gamers capitalised on the sales event.
Last week's new release, Hitman: Absolution, slipped to sixth place behind Elder Scrolls: Skyrim, which continues to maintain a spot in the chart, even after a lengthy release.
1. Call of Duty: Black Ops II
2. Borderlands 2
3. XCOM: Enemy Unknown
4. Max Payne 3
5. Skyrim
6. Hitman: Absolution
7. Chivalry: Medieval Warfare
8. Assassin’s Creed III
9. The Walking Dead
10. Skyrim: Dawnguard DLC and ArmA II: Combined Operations

Microsoft has announced that it will continue to provide support for its latest tablet device, the Surface, until April 11th 2017.
Those users who have recently invested in the tablet will be pleased by the news, which promises them at least four years of fully supported usage of the device.
This differs from Microsoft's business products, which are typically offered with five years of extended support.
Following the date in 2017, the firm will cease all support and firmware updates for the device.
However, it is highly likely that Microsoft will follow in the footsteps of its closest rival Apple and its routine of offering new products on a yearly basis, meaning there could be a number of newer Surface devices available prior to this date.

The guys over at Lavalit have released a new version of the beats of rage clone for the Dreamcast, Dingoo, PSP, Linux, Windows, GP2x, Nintendo Wii and Wiz.
OpenBOR is a continuation of the Beats Of Rage 2D game engine, which was originally
created by the wonderful folks over at http://www.senileteam.com.
In 2004, Senile Team released Beats of Rage, a free beat-'em-up for DOS inspired
by SEGA's Streets of Rage series and using sprites from SNK Playmore's King of
Fighters series. The game spread only by word of mouth, but it nonetheless
amassed popularity very quickly. Senile Team soon released an edit pack allowing
anyone interested to create a mod for the BOR engine.
In 2005, Kirby2000 asked Senile Team to open the source code to BOR. They
agreed, and OpenBOR was born. Development on the engine was continued by the
community, and still is to this day.

As a retailer, EA's Origin service is also obligated to participate in Black Friday craziness. If you have any money left, you could spend it on a selection of cheap EA games.
For example, Battlefield 3 is $12 to download on PC or $20 physically (on PC, Xbox, or 360). Need for Speed Most Wanted is discounted a bunch ($25 on PC, $30 on PS3 or Xbox, $20 on Vita). Medal of Honor Warfighter is $30 on PC, Xbox, and PS3. The gigantic Command & Conquer Ultimate Edition is just $25. Browse all the deals here.
Origin is also offering Black Friday deals in Europe, where the company felt it necessary to explain the concept of Black Friday: "Black Friday is a relatively new concept in Europe. It traditionally refers to the beginning of the Christmas shopping period and falls on the day after the American Thanksgiving day. On Black Friday, US retailers tend to open incredibly early and offer amazing sales deals for a limited time only."

Linux fans wondering why they still don't have a friendly UEFI Secure Boot option for Windows 8 PCs won't get a solution in hand this week, but they'll at least get an explanation. The Linux Foundation's primary backer for the alternative OS efforts, Parallels' server CTO James Bottomley, has revealed that Microsoft's requirements for signed, Secure Boot-ready code are tough if developers aren't entirely onboard its train of thought. The Redmond crew demands a paper contract signature (remember those?), agreements on work beyond the relevant software and a packaging process that complicates attempts to use open-source tools. Bottomley has already overcome most of these challenges, although he's still waiting for a Linux Foundation-specific key that should theoretically clear a major hurdle. Whether or not that leads to a remedy in days or weeks is up to Microsoft; in the meantime, we'll take comfort in knowing that a signature is so far a convenience for booting into Linux, rather than a necessity.

There’s bad news for gamers in the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg who were hoping to buy Assassin’s Creed III on PC.
Thanks to the tiny size of Belgium and Luxembourg, the shipment of the SKU for all three countries was able to fit onto a single truck. That was stolen.
Kotaku reports that Ubisoft maintains the game’s launch week will not be affected as it will be able to source stock from elsewhere on the continent.
Those who pre-ordered the limited edition ‘Join or Die’ version of the game are out of luck, though, with the publisher saying that it cannot be remanufactured.
Ubisoft has blocked the serial numbers of all the stolen games, meaning those who acquire the copies will be unable to authenticate them online.
The PC version of Assassin’s Creed III was released in the UK today.

Windows 8 has launched, and with it the Windows Store, Microsoft’s answer to the App Store and Google Play. For developers, it’s a route to a potential audience of millions; as if that weren’t incentive enough, Microsoft and Future Publishing are running an app development contest with £40,000 worth of prizes on offer.
