Sales of the standalone DayZ game have now passed 2 million, according to creator Dean Hall.
That's up some 300,000 copies from the 1.7 million sales publisher Bohemia Interactive announced in March. The latest sales milestone has been hit within six months of the game's release, said Hall via the Twitter announcement, although it's actually less than five months since the game first hit Steam.
"Just over 2 years ago the DayZ mod released. Today, the Standalone game just broke 2 million units in under 6 months," said Hall.
The standalone alpha version of the perma-death zombie survival game released on Steam Early Access and via Bohemia Interactive's online store on December 16, 2013.
The game quickly hit 172,500 in the game's first 24 hours of availability and had topped 800,000 sales by January 6, according to the game's developer.
In March, Hall announced that the team working on DayZ was 'effectively doubling' as he made preparations to leave the project by the end of 2014.
The game is available to buy on Steam for a cost of £19.99 / €23.99 / $29.99.

Late last week Microsoft announced that it had discovered a serious security flawin Internet Explorer (versions 6 through 11!) that left users vulnerable to attack. Nefarious characters could use malicious sites to infect a target machine and even take it over remotely. Rather than wait for the regular monthly update, Redmond has decided to release a "out-of-band" update to address the issue. The update will start rolling out this afternoon around 1PM ET (10AM PT) and will quietly install if you have automatic updates turned on. If you're stubborn and insist on updating your machine manually, we highly suggest you make it a point to download this patch today.
If you're also clinging to your aging XP install, we have good news: Microsoft has decided to include your OS in this security update. Despite officially ending support for XP a few weeks ago, the company decided that the threat was serious enough to warrant an exception to the rule.

The UK PC download chart has collapsed, MCV understands.
It officially launched in May last year, but hasn’t been seen since MCV published the statistics for Q2 2013 last October.
The chart was put together by UKIE and stat giant IPSOS. To build it they would receive data from publishers such as Sega, EA, Ubisoft, Square Enix, Warner and 2K.
However, a number of companies would not share their data, including Activision and Bethesda. And MCV has been told that the project was proving a burden to the publishers that had committed to it.
Various PC digital retailers – including Steam and Green Man Gaming – all report sales data in different ways, making compiling the figures time-consuming. This has made it very difficult for UKIE to put out a regular chart.
As a result, the trade body has put the download chart on the back burner, and will now work on a new project to discover the size of the PC download market. It hopes to bring the chart back in the future.
The news comes as a blow to the global games industry. The absence of figures is putting the market under unnecessary strain as it struggles to attract support from various Government bodies and investors.
Those looking to invest in digital games companies are instead forced to seek out alternative data sources to justify their investment.
Head of digital for investment firm Mercia Fund Management (and former Sega chief) Mike Hayes said: “The lack of cohesive agglomerated digital data in the games market may be a challenge for some, but there is enough proprietary and benchmark data around to enable good decisions to be made.â€

PC ownersneed fairly burly systems to play Wolfenstein: The New Order the way it was meant to be played, according to Bethesda. The publisher detailed system requirements for MachineGames' soon-to-be-released shooter, but went on to say they're the specs "to deliver the PC game as it was intended to be experienced." So, while the specs are listed as "system requirements," Bethesda stopped short of calling them "minimum" requirements.
Make of that what you will. Anyway, the specs in full are:- 64-bit Windows 7/Windows 8
- Intel Core i7 or equivalent
- AMD4 GB System RAM
- 50GB free HDD space
- GeForce 460, ATI Radeon HD 6850
- High Speed Internet Connection
- Steam account and activation required
As for the consoles, PS4 and Xbox One owners need 47GB free for installs, while it's 8GB for installs on Xbox 360 and PS3 - that goes up to 17GB for a PSN download. The New Order remains primed for launch on May 20, when players will see the return of steely hero B.J. Blazkowicz, but in an alternate reality where the Nazis won the war. So, a bit like the movie Sliding Doors, except... nope, let's end that analogy right there.

Life as a roguelike protagonist must be bleak - being born into adulthood without experiencing birthday parties, fighting increasingly brutal waves of enemies until their lone-warrior efforts are finally stomped out of existence ... it can't really be fulfilling. Maybe you can spare your Hero from the same fleeting fate in Vertical Drop Heroes HD, a randomly-generated roguelike due for PC and Mac on May 20.
Players will have 20 traits, 15 abilities and powers and 16 weapons to arm Heroes with, but anyone overwhelmed by Vertical Drop Heroes' mounting challenge can rope in a teammate via split screen or network-based co-op. What are you fighting for beyond a few more minutes of life for your Hero? The related press release teases the "truth behind the game," which conveniently lays beyond conquering the final boss.
Vertical Drop Heroes will cost $5 when it arrives on Good Old Games, Humble Store and Green Man Gaming. It's also currently up for vote on Steam Greenlight.

PC-only gamers haven't been able to enjoy Dynasty Warrior 8's hectic, definitely-true-to-history battles between ancient Chinese kingdoms, but Tecmo Koei is about to fix that. The publisher is bringing Omega Force's DW8: Xtreme Legends Complete Edition to Steam on May 13 in North America and Europe.
The Complete Edition bundles the base game of DW8 with its Xtreme Legendsexpansion, which adds new characters, story episodes, weapons and enhancements to the Ambition, Challenge and Free modes.
Complete Edition's minimum requirements call for at least Windows Vista, with 512 MB of RAM, a VRAM 256MB video card and an Intel Core 2 Duo Processor 2.4 GHz (or Intel Core i7 860) rounding out base requirements. Support for gamepads will also be present, as will be support for DirectX 9.0c.

While Blizzard today is best known for its crafts - Warcraft, StarCraft,DemonKillerCraft Diablo - once upon a time it also was a studio represented by three vikings who explored a colorful, albeit dangerous, world. Now, those vikings have come home. The Lost Vikings, Rock 'n Roll Racing and Blackthorneare all available right now via Blizzard's Battle.net service, and they're all free of charge.
For those unfamiliar, The Lost Vikings is a sidescrolling platformer featuring three vikings: Erik, Olaf and Baleog. A single player can control all three vikings, though only one at a time. Blackthorne is another 2D platformer, though its tone is far darker and tells the tale of an exiled king returning to his home planet, using a pump-action shotgun to fight off monsters. Rock 'n Roll Racingturns the art of racing into a bloodsport, giving players access to weapons such as missiles and land mines as they race around a dystopian landscape.
To access these games, you'll need to log into your Battle.net account and navigate to the "Download Game Clients" page. There, underneath all the clients for games you own, you'll find the trio of treasures just waiting for your loving embrace. Unfortunately, BlizzPro reports that the version of Rock 'n Roll Racing lacks the game's famous music selection, and includes only three tracks.

Dark Souls II has bumped DayZ off its presumed throne on this week's Steam top sellers chart, grabbing the top spot in its second week out from launch.
DayZ didn't fall far, still selling enough copies during the period to take the runner-up position. A Star Wars series sale has its 2014 franchise collection in third, while a major discount to Steam Early Access title Prison Architect boosted it onto the list and into fourth place.
Watch Dogs pre-orders stayed strong, with the title finishing in fifth; while other list regulars – including Rust, Counter-Strike, and Space Engineers – kept busy making up the second half of the top ten.
Here's the full list:
- Dark Souls II
- DayZ
- Star Wars Collection - 2014
- Prison Architect
- Watch Dogs
- Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
- Space Engineers
- Rust
- Skyrim - Legendary Edition
- Arma 3

One of the biggest concerns with Chrome OS is the fact that much of the platform relies on an internet connection to actually do what they're supposed to do. Fortunately, Google's aware of this and is working on it, one feature at a time. Today, the software giant announced that the Play Movies Chrome app will support offline movies and TV shows in the next several weeks. This feature has already been available on Android devices, so it's nice to see it expand into theChrome OS sphere, along with continued manufacturer hardware support for the platform.

As most people will have heard, Microsoft will end support for anyone who hasn't upgraded to Win8.1 Update 1 on May 8. What fewer people have heard is that large numbers of users can't install the 8.1 Update, with over a thousand messages in this one thread alone, and that's for tech geeks rather than home users who won't find out about this until their PC becomes orphaned on May 8. Check your Windows Update log, if you've got a "Failed" entry next to KB2919355 then your PC will also become orphaned after May 8

A patent filed by Microsoft has revealed a possible future smartwatch design for the firm.
The wearable tech is shown to have a focus on fitness tracking, with features including distance tracking, heart rate monitoring and a calories burnt counter.
The device is described as being abled to be removed from its wristband, meaning additional bands and devices can then be used to house the tracker, as well as allowing the fitness-centric module to be plugged into workout machines to continue monitoring.
The patent also details a wireless charging dock that will accompany the device.
Microsoft’s rumoured development in the space joins the multiple firms which have been increasing their investment in wearable technology such as smartwatches over the last year, including LG, Google/Motorola, Pebble and even musician Will.i.am.

Epic Games is known for a lot of things, the Gears of War game franchise and development tool Unreal Engine prime among them. But old-school game fans might know Epic Games for another classic franchise: Unreal Tournament. The long-dormant series is making its return starting today! Sort of. Epic announced this afternoon that the next Unreal Tournament game begins development starting today with "a small team of UT veterans" focused on development for Windows, Mac and Linux. The entire development is open source, which Epic characterizes as, "a collaboration between Epic, UT fans and UE4 developers." As that line infers, the game's being created using Unreal Engine 4. Best of all? When the game's ready to play, it will be free. As Epic puts it: "Not free to play, just free."

The PC games sector may be dominant worldwide, but consoles are the real power in the UK and will remain so for years to come, says DFC Intelligence.
The analysts revealed last week that on a global scale, PC gaming revenue had overtaken the console market. But whilst that might be true across mainland Europe and emerging markets, home consoles are still king amongst Brits. In fact, the console space is worth over double that of the PC games market.
“The statement is absolutely not true for the UK where console gaming is still dominant by a large margin. Console gaming is over twice as much revenue as PC gaming,†DFC boss David Cole told MCV.
Both PS4 and Xbox One remain in the early-stages of their life cycle, with consumers continuing to pick up the new machines as more games are released. And Cole says the gap between console and PC gaming in the UK is only going to widen.
“In the next few years we will continue to see console gaming dominating in the UK and actually increasing that dominance.â€
PC’s worldwide dominances is due to markets such as Russia and Hungary where demand for PC gaming massively outpaces consoles.
Furthermore, the cost-effective gaming café culture in Asian markets like Taiwan has fuelled the figures behind digital PC titles such as League of Legends and Dota 2.
“The PC is a fairly universal item that is used for work and education but also as a way to play all kinds of games, while console systems are a luxury item used mainly for entertainment,†added Cole.
“Well to do markets like the UK and US can afford luxury items like video game console systems. However, much of the world can not afford such a luxury so the PC becomes the de facto game system.â€

An upgraded PC version of the classic console RPG Final Fantasy 3 is coming soon to Steam, publisher Square Enix announced today.
Originally released for the 8-bit Famicom in 1990, Final Fantasy 3 expanded on series traditions with the introduction of a player-driven job system, which would define later games like Final Fantasy 5 and Final Fantasy Tactics. An enhanced version premiered for the Nintendo DS in 2006, and a later iOS portserves as the basis for Square Enix's upcoming Steam release.
The Steam version of Final Fantasy 3 is priced at $15.99, and includes unlockable Steam Trading Cards and Achievements. A release date has not been announced.

The first monitor to include Nvidia’s G-Sync technology as standard is due to hit UK shelves in the next few weeks.
The AOC g2460Pg is said by AOC to be the first monitor to integrate Nvidia’s long-touted G-Sync technology into its design, rather than requiring a retrofitted kit.
Demonstrating the technology to PCR (see below for a video), AOC said that the £359 24-inch display was due to arrive “within the next two to three weeksâ€, and will debut at PCR’s Boot Camp event on May 21st.
Nvidia G-Sync synchronises display refresh rates to the render rate of a GPU in a computer powered by an Nvidia GeForce GX graphics card that supports the technology.
This synchronisation should eliminate screen tearing and reduce display stutter and input lag, making gameplay smoother overall for gamers.
The announcement comes as distributor VIP Computers announced its intention to "lead the market on G-Sync and 4K", becoming the first UK distributor to stock the Palit 6GB GTX 780 Jetstream graphics card, which is designed to support G-Sync and 4K displays.
“Nvidia G-Sync monitors are a game-changer, the likes of which cannot be found anywhere else,†said Matt Wright, consumer sales manager of Northern European distribution at Nvidia.
“Pro e-sport players and pro-gaming leagues are lining up to use G-Sync; it exposes a player’s true skill, demanding greater reflexes thanks to unnoticeable delay between on-screen actions and keyboard commands.
“Once you’ve used a G-Sync monitor in conjunction with a fast GeForce GTX GPU, you’ll never want to use a ‘normal’ monitor again.â€
Nvidia recently announced its Q1 2015 financial results, revealing that net income for the graphics specialist had risen by 75 per cent from the previous year, hitting $137 million (£81m). GeForce GTX GPUs for both desktops and notebooks grew by 57 per cent.

The ‘world’s only’ 8GB edition of AMD’s flagship 290X graphics card has gone on sale.
The Sapphire R9 290X Vapor-X OC features 8192MB of GDDR5 video memory running at 5600MHz, a 1060MHz core speed, 2816 stream processors and a 512-bit memory interface.
The memory capacity doubles the 290X’s original 4GB provision and additionally tops that of AMD rival Nvidia’s Titan Black card, which runs on 6GB of VRAM.
The 290X 8GB is said by retailer Overclockers UK, which currently has the exclusive rights to the product, to be “perfect for a 4K setupâ€.
The card includes two dual-link DVI connetions, a HDMI output and a DisplayPort. At least 600W of power supply is required, as well as eight-pin and six-pin cables for power.
The ‘Vapor-X’ moniker refers to the trio of fans sat on top of the card, which employ a choke design claimed by Sapphire to improve power efficiency by 25 per cent.
The card also includes the custom card firm’s ‘Intelligent Fan Control’, which means only one fan will operate when the card is under low workload.
The Sapphire R9 290X Vapor-X OC 8GB is available now for £600.

Won't someone please ? The Sims 4 has been given an 18+ rating in Russia, due to content deemed "harmful" to children. The news was first tweeted by the official Russian Sims account, which later clarified that the rating was given to the game in accordance with Russian law 436-FZ, "On Protection of Children from Information Harmful to Their Health and Development."
Official Sims sources have not revealed specifically what content came into conflict with the law, which penalizes information "encouraging children to commit acts that endanger their lives," information that would instill a "desire to use narcotics, psychotropic and (or) intoxicants, tobacco, alcohol and alcohol-containing products," information "justifying illegal behavior," information that contains pornographic imagery and information that promotes "unconventional sexual relationships," among a lengthy list of other offenses.
Whatever the offending content, think twice before calling someone who playsThe Sims 4 names; clearly this game is pretty hardcore.

Halo developer Bungie has been working with fans on a patch for the original game's PC version, in order to keep its multiplayer servers online post-GameSpy server shutdown.
An update to the game and to its Custom Edition is in the works thanks to Bungie developer Roger Wolfson and a small group of fans, Halo-Fixes revealed."A small group has been quietly preparing for the shutdown of the GameSpy Master Server (which provides the list of Halo servers) and they are finally ready to discuss their work. The group consists of Roger Wolfson aka Sawnose (of Bungie), Btcc22 (of HAC2), Kornman00 (of OpenSauce) and myself, Technut (of PÕQ Clan)."As a result of their work, especially Btcc22 and Roger, Bungie will be releasing version 1.0.10 of Halo PC and Halo CE soon, which will include the fix for the Lobby!"Hosting service GameRanger announced last week it was stepping in to ensure Halo - and other titles such as Star Wars Battlefront 2 - remain online.A lobby service, GameRanger works across multiple titles to let users host and join games. But Bungie's update will mean Halo PC should have its own integrated lobby/matchmaking service. The GameSpy server shutdown has been affecting scores of titles - more than 50 EA games will go offline at the end of next month, for example.

Family-friendly EA sandbox game The Sims 4 has been branded with an adults-only "18+" rating in Russia due to its inclusion of same-sex relationships. The possibility for characters to be gay means that access to the game must be restricted per Russia's 436-FZ law to "protect" minors from the "propaganda of non-traditional sexual relationships".
The Sims 4's rating came to light after promotional art was posted by the Sims Russia Twitter account and included the "18+" label. When asked why the game had been rated only for adults in the region, the account pointed to the 436-FZ law."18+ has been assigned in accordance with the law number 436-FZ 'on the protection of children from information harmful to their health and development'," Sims Russiawrote.Originally passed in 2010, the law was amended last year and gained international criticism in the run up to recent Winter Olympics in Sochi. Previous titles in the series have escaped penalisation.EA has since stated it has no plans to alter the game to lower its classification in the country."We have no plans to alter The Sims 4," a spokesperson told Polygon. "One of the key tenets of The Sims is that it is up to the player to decide how to play the game. We provide the simulation sandbox and player choice and creativity does the rest."Nintendo was recently criticised for not including same-sex relationships in its own sandbox game, Tomodachi Life. The company has since apologised and said it would take fan feedback into account for future incarnations of the series.

The true successor to the Elite series took place on the streets rather than in the stars, series co-creator David Braben has said.
While "space" has become somewhat of a category of its own in the years since the Elite series helped define open-world games, Braben toldTechRadar that he saw its lineage reflected elsewhere.
"I think games set in space became quite niche," Braben said. "They lost sight of what was the key element of Elite and Frontier - freedom. The true successors to Elite and Frontier were the Grand Theft Auto games. For me, the setting is secondary to the feeling of freedom."
Braben said he has already seen how that freedom will affect Kickstarted sequel Elite Dangerous. He observed multiplayer alpha players hanging around near players who were mining resources - but instead of destroying them and taking their loot, they laid in wait to claim the bounties placed on others who decided to try their hands at raiding.
"The success of the Elite series has always been based on the freedom that players are given," Braben said. "It's all about individual choice in an open world - you don't select 'pirate' or 'bounty hunter' or 'trader' from a list, you simply do what you want and events will unfold accordingly."
Phase one of the Elite Dangerous beta began in April. Access to the beta, which also includes full access to the game at launch, is priced at £100.
Access to the Elite Dangerous standard beta costs £50, while the final game is priced at £35 ahead of its release later this year. The title will be available on PC first and Mac three months later.

Iron Man commented: "Look guys, I know we're getting a continuation to our Facebook game Marvel: Avengers Alliance, but let's not get ahead of ourselves. I mean, what's really new about this one?"
Nick Fury commented: "This is Avengers Alliance Tactics. Like before, players will take on the role of a SHIELD agent who sends teams of heroes out to save the day in turn-based battles. However, this time the the map is grid-based, when before it was just teams of heroes on the left side of the screen battling enemies on the right. Now, positioning is a factor, and the 3D graphics mean the 20 heroes available at launch can be seen from more angles."
Hawkeye commented: "As long as they get my good side!"
Black Widow commented: "So where and when can we play it?"
Nick Fury commented: "We're not sure when it'll be released worldwide, but it's coming to Canada first. They say we'll have it 'soon.'" Wolverine likes this.
Spider-Man commented: "Hey guys, I know this might not be the best time to ask, but can I be an Avenger now?"
Hulk poked Spider-Man. Spider-Man's bones are dust.

Happy birthday, Diablo 3! Today marks the two-year anniversary of your arrival into this world, and in a few days time it will be the two-year anniversary of when anyone got to play you. Hooray!
Aw, don't take any notice, Diablo 3. 15 million people came to your party, and that number's only going to rise when you make friends with PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in August.
Now, to celebrate you reaching the ripe old age of 2, for a week Blizzard's giving PC and Mac players double Rift Fragments and twice as much chance of looting a Legendary item. That's a nice buff to keep running until 5AM PT/8AM ET on May 22, isn't it?
So, make a wish, blow out your candles, and go play nice with Torchlight 2.

DayZ has fallen victim of a potentially significant hack.
Reddit reports began to emerge recently that the game had actually had its entire source code stolen. Speaking to Rock Paper Shotgun publisher Bohemia has not commented on that particular claim, but has confirmed that an incident has taken place.
It also stressed that no user data was compromised.
“We have recently detected an attack on some of our servers, the precise nature and scope of this attack is currently being extensively investigated,†a report read. “There were no user data on any of the servers. Current development goals and schedules for our games will not be affected by this attack.
“More information will follow as our investigation continues.â€
Aside from the moral and legal implications, any theft of source code would also open the door to the development of crippling hacks and bugs.

Fifteen years later, Jurassic Park: Trespasser still seems to bring out the dreamer in game developers.
It's largely forgotten today, but there was a time when the 1998 first-person shooter published by Electronic Arts aspired to be the ultimate technical achievement. Developer Seamus Blackley dreamt of a perfectly seamless, immersive world with intelligent dinosaurs – an idea that still has the power to spark the imagination with its insane technical ambition. Despite assurances prior to release that the game would revolutionize PC gaming, Trespasser was critically panned and commercially ignored.
Today, the dream of that revolutionary title lives on through a group of dedicated fans unwilling to let to die. The architect of that effort is Larry Ellis – an Australian working part time at a local distribution company, with the rest of his hours devoted to the long forgotten licensed game. Utilizing Crytek's powerful CryEngine, he recently captivated the internet with a series of gorgeous updates to the original Trespasser jungle environments.
Ellis' ambitions, however, are far greater than a simple remake. The part-time designer has grand ambitions with plans to recreate the game's entire world – Isla Sorna – and within it, inject new missions, objectives and more. Utilizing technology that lies at the bleeding edge, Ellis aims to make use of both Oculus Rift and the Razer Hydra to live up to the game's original vision for a unique control scheme.
Ellis' project seems almost crazy in scope - a one-man attempt to make good on assurances made by a company he has no affiliation with nearly two decades ago. Perhaps it's an impossible dream, but it's hard not to cheer for an underdog with so much passion.

Pilots, Star Citizen's tank is filled with over $43 million in funding, you're clear for departure. Don't propel yourself into the deepest, darkest depths of space just yet though - get your bearings, get comfortable in your new, futuristic attire, learn how maneuvering a tin can in space works. If you helped fund Star Citizen, you can do all of these things in the dogfight-focused Arena Commander mode, which is due to make contact with backers on May 29.
Developer Cloud Imperium Games plans to offer the single player Free Flight and Vanduul Swarm modes in Arena Commander's initial launch. Studio Director Erin Roberts shared questions the team asks themselves while developing Vanduul Swarm, like "how many fighters in a wave?" and "how many waves?," which suggests an AI-populated, wave-based style of play.
Though creator Chris Roberts has supplied a schedule for development up until the planned launch, he acknowledges that there could be "unforeseen issues" that risk a delay. However, he adds that if they surface, "the community will know what they are AND how they impact the schedule as soon as I do."

The fight to be recognized as a mighty Caos, a brand of powerful warriors serving the gods in Ascend: Hand of Kul's universe, has been waged between players since September on XBLA. That fight will soon envelop PC users, as Signal Studios is bringing the action RPGto Steam on May 20.
In case you're wondering why anyone would strive to be on call for a higher power's war-oriented needs, Ascend's world is plagued with immortal giants called Titans. You'd think Titans would use their unlimited span of life to master every skill they ever wanted, right? Nope, they're stuck on the "savage killer" trait, devouring human souls in their endless state of being jerks.
Considering the other option is to wait around in a village for a Titan to digest your very being, life as a Caos doesn't sound so bad.

League of Legends may not share much in common with your average 2D fighter, but the hyper-popular multiplayer online battle arena does feature a large, diverse cast of champions, which was enough impetus for Brazilian artist Iury Padilha to reimagine the MOBA in a more intimate combat style.
Padilha recently uploaded images to his DeviantArt account which depictLeague of Legends characters squaring off in traditional Street Fighter-esque mano a mano fisticuffs. While Padilha clearly owes much of his personal style to anime and manga influences - somehow even moreso than Capcom's stable of Japanese artists - he does an excellent job of translating champions from one medium to another.
Even more impressive are the backgrounds Padilha has designed, which depict small scenes drawn from League of Legends' various battlegrounds with a slightly muted color palette. This tone seems more apropos for the source material, even as it contrasts with the more cartoonish style Padilha lends his characters.
You can find the entirety of Padilha's efforts by visiting his DeviantArt page, along with a much higher resolution version of the image above.

The Free Software Foundation has opposed Mozilla's move to support DRM in the Firefox browser, partnering with Adobe to do so. The FSF said, '[We're] deeply disappointed in Mozilla's announcement. The decision compromises important principles in order to alleviate misguided fears about loss of browser market share. It allies Mozilla with a company hostile to the free software movement and to Mozilla's own fundamental ideals. ... We recognize that Mozilla is doing this reluctantly, and we trust these words coming from Mozilla much more than we do when they come from Microsoft or Amazon. At the same time, nearly everyone who implements DRM says they are forced to do it, and this lack of accountability is how the practice sustains itself.'"

All of Star Citizen's backers will get access to the first playable release of the game starting on May 29, developer Cloud Imperium announced Monday.
Players will receive access to the Arena Commander module's "Free Flight" and "Vanduul Swarm" modes. Certain multiplayer testers will also gain access to the module's online modes. More multiplayer testers will be invited as server conditions allow.
Arena Commander is positioned as a game-within-a-game; in the full release of Star Citizen, it will let players simulate training missions and multiplayer dogfights without risking their vessels.
The full game will allow players to carve out a piece of the universe by trading, raiding, exploring, and signing up for military service. It has topped $42 million from fans so far, making it one of the most successfully crowd funded games ever.
Studio founder and Wing Commander creator Chris Roberts set up a Kickstarter for the game in mid-2012 with an initial target of $500,000. The total raised by the funding drive's conclusion was $2,134,374. Cloud Imperium has since continued to raise funds on the Star Citizen websiteby selling additional spaceships and other virtual goods priced from $25 to over $200 per item.
A lengthy video published in April shows off Arena Commander's dogfighting and extravehicular activities.

Here's the thing about Assassins Creed: Pirates (you know, aside from the obvious swashbuckling theme): It was made specifically for phones and tablets. In fact, Ubisoft warned from the get-go that we probably wouldn't see a PC or console version. Starting today, though, you can play it on your computer after all -- well, sort of. Ubisoft just released a free browser-based version allowing you to play in the browser, using either touch input or a mouse and keyboard. What's nice, too, is that although Ubisoft developed the web game with Microsoft, it actually works with every major browser -- Chrome, Firefox, Opera, Safari and, of course, IE. As a bonus, it runs full-screen, something most web-based titles can't do.

Video game villains don't get much more classic than the occult-loving Nazis of the Wolfenstein series - they've been goose-stepping and zeig heil-ing for more than 30 years. Unfortunately, the gameplay of the latest game in the series,Wolfenstein: The New Order, is anything but classic. From our three-star review:
"It's almost as if there's a tug of war going between the big dumb shooter and the attempt to be subversive, with the result being a game that's not really slick enough to be an action classic, and not dramatic enough to draw you in."
We're not the only ones sending the Nazis packing, though. March on past the break to see what other soldiers thought of Wolfenstein.

Not even halfway through 2014, Valve has already seen more games released on its Steam service than in all of 2013. Gamasutra reports that if the trend continues, we'll see more than 2,000 games released on Steam in 2014, compared to just more than 600 in 2013. While that sounds great for gamers, more isn't necessarily better.
Just because a game makes it through Steam's Greenlight or Early Accessprograms does not make it a trustworthy, worthwhile purchase, as was demonstrated when Earth: 2066 was pulled from Steam for dishonest advertising.
Tom Ohle, director at Evolve PR, and founder of indie publisher Nkidu Games, told Gamasutra that Steam was "approaching iOS App Store-like saturation," making it harder for some games and publishers to break out and catch a Steam user's eye. The gates may be more open than ever, but that also means more people are going to try and squeeze their way through.

Alienware's upcoming Steam Machine may be many things - stylish, made in collaboration with Valve, upgradeable, due this September - but one thing it won't be is a source of major income for parent company Dell. Division general manager Frank Azor told The Wall Street Journal that the Alienware Steam Machine will "absolutely be the least profitable system" the company will ever sell.
Unfortunately, we still don't know the pricing scheme of Alienware's entry to the already-crowded Steam Machine market. We don't even know what's going to be inside of the thing, other than an Intel processor and an Nvidia graphics card. It is, for now, a low-profit mystery.

Microsoft has unveiled the Surface Pro 3.
Like the previous generations of the Surface, the Surface Pro 3 includes an integrated kickstand, but adds multi-stage positioning, including a ‘canvas mode’ which props the Pro 3 at a 150-degree angle – suitable for digital artists.
To showcase the Pro 3’s suitability for creative professionals, Microsoft invited Adobe on-stage to demonstrate a new touch-optimised edition of Adobe Photoshop, which was operating using a new Surface Pro 3 stylus.
"This is the tablet than can replace your laptop," said Surface head Panos Panay, revealing the device.
The Pro 3 increases the Surface 2’s 10.6-inch screen to a 12-inch 3:2 ratio HD display.
The Pro 3 is also thinner and lighter than the previous iteration of the tablet, shrinking down to 9.1mm thick and 800g, with thinner surrounding bezels – Panay compared the tablet to an Apple MacBook Air.
Inside the tablet sits an Intel Core i7 processor.
Microsoft also revealed a new Type Cover, which adds a laptop-like trackpad and magnetically attaches to the Pro 3, adjusting to each kickstand position.
Panay, again citing the tablet’s positioning as a replacement for laptops, highlighted the device’s “lapability†– or ease of use on a lap – which the previous two Surface tablets struggled to address.
The device will go on sale in the US on May 21st, starting at $799 (£474).

We'd surmise that a few folks were disappointed then Microsoft's Surface eventconcluded earlier today. Rumors swirled that the "small gathering" tease meant a more compact version of Redmond's tablet was imminent, but instead the festivities focused on a larger 12-inch pro model. Now, Bloomberg reports that a more compact model was on tap before being nixed ahead of its official debut. The report states that CEO Satya Nadella and EVP Stephen Elop concluded that the device didn't offer enough pizazz to differentiate it from the options that are currently on the market -- smaller Windows-powered slates from the likes of Dell and others. MS engineers had reportedly been working on the so-called Surface mini alongside Qualcomm for the better part of a year before the plug was pulled ahead of final approval.

When Microsoft invited us to a "small gathering" here in New York City, we thought that meant a smaller-screened Surface Mini was in order. Instead, the company just announced a larger Surface, the 12-inch Surface Pro 3. Like the previous Surface Pro, it supports pen input, making it a good choice for creative professionals, especially with that pixel-dense 2,160 x 1,440 screen. In addition to being the biggest, highest-res Surface yet, though, it's also the thinnest-ever product with an Intel Core i7 processor. All told, the thing measures just 9.1mm (0.36 inch) thick, putting it on par with an older-gen iPad -- incredible when you remember this is more akin to an Ultrabook than a tablet.

An opinion piece at ReadWriteWeb makes an interesting suggestion: Microsoft's efforts in the tablet market aren't aimed at competing with the iPad or any of the Android tablets, but rather inventing a new facet of the PC market — one Microsoft alone is targeting. Quoting: 'Microsoft wants everyone to think the Surface Pro 3 is a tablet, but its pricing gives the game away. Microsoft wants to recreate the lucrative PC market that made the company billions of dollars by repackaging a PC into tablet clothing and then hammering away at the Surface product line until everybody believes that PCs never really went anywhere, they just got a touchscreen and a cellular connection.' This is also supported by the lack of a smaller Surface tablet, which many analysts were predicting before this week's press conference. Microsoft is clearly not pursuing the tablet-for-everyone approach, but instead focusing on users who want productivity out of their mobile computing device. The Surface Pros are expensive, but Microsoft is hoping people will balance that cost against the cost of a work laptop plus a personal tablet.

Microsoft's intimate Surface event didn't reveal the smaller tablet many expected, instead it went much bigger. In an attempt to capitalize on early buzz for its new super-thin 12-inch slate, the company today opened pre-orders for the Surface Pro 3, Surface Pro Type Cover and Surface Pen in 22 countries worldwide. The Core i7 Surface Pro 3 is now available on the Microsoft Store in both 256GB and 512GB variants, starting at $1,549/£1,339 with an estimated August 31st ship date. The $799/£639 64GB Core i3 model is expected to ship around the same time, although the Core i5 versions of the Surface Pro 3, Surface Pro Type Cover, Surface Pen and Pen Loop will make their way to you a little earlier, shipping by June 20th. Customers in China, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Thailand and Taiwan will have to wait until August to get their hands on the biggest, highest-resolution Surface yet.

It turns out that maintaining the balance of light and dark is extremely important for the well being of the world's inhabitants. Who knew, right? Final Fantasy 3's world has an impending balance problem of its own, but it's nothing that a group of young orphans can't fix by banding together, inheriting power from talking crystals and buffing their skill set at the expense of a lot of monsters. Steam users can do all of the above starting on May 27, when Square-Enix brings the RPG to PCs for $15.99.
The Steam version will offer trading cards and achievements, with its store page also boasting "upgraded graphics for PC." Though we'll soon have a choice from the mobile, PC or Nintendo DS versions, it took 16 years for Final Fantasy 3 to reach Europe or North America after its 1990 Japanese debut.

TechCrunch's video introduction (not intended as a full review) to the recently introduced Microsoft Surface Pro 3 has mostly good things to say about the device. Reviewer Alex Wilhelm compares it to his MacBook Air, and though he's not sure that the Surface is a better fit for all-day typing than the 11" Air (slightly larger, slightly heavier than the Surface), he says the Surface does a good job of integrating input options (both finger and stylus input) that the Air -- and most laptops -- just don't have. The Washington Post's Hayley Tsukayama also compares the Surface to the Air, rather than to an Android or Apple tablet, writing, "It's heavy for a tablet, sure, but light for a laptop at 1.7 pounds. And while it doesn't have the array of ports that laptops do, you can make do with the two that it does have, a mini-display port that's good for presentations and a USB 3.0 that's good for, well, everything else. You will probably need a hub to get everything you want of this, though. (Or you could go to using Bluetooth accessories, which the Surface Pro 3 will also support.)" Ars Technica has an informative hands-on review as well, but one which parts from these by emphatically describing the Surface as a tablet, not a laptop; Ars reviewer Peter Bright gives high marks for many aspects of the design and materials, though he says his experience with the included pressure-sensitive pen was "problematic." (His initial sample pen had to be replaced, and even when it did work, it lacks tilt sensing.) Troubling for anyone who would prefer to use it as a laptop, Bright says the Surface 3 is better than its forebears but still an awkward fit for using on an actual lap, and that despite the improvements Microsoft's made it therefore isn't quite the system he's looking for.

The PC market is changing rapidly as tablets supplant some laptops, new players such as the Chromebook disrupt the old WIntel model, and innovations in processors and graphics allow for ever-smaller PCs such as Intel's NUC (Next Unit of Computing) PC. Gigabyte recently introduced a rather unique product that combines the tiny 4.5-inch square form factor of Intel's NUC PC platform together with a mini DLP projector. TheGigabyte Brix Projector measures 4.24 x 4.5 x 1.93 inches (WxLxD) but manages to fit in an Intel Core i3-4010U (1.7GHz) processor with built-in Intel HD 4400 graphics and support for up to 16GB of 1600MHz RAM. Finally, an mSATA slot inside the chassis also supports up to a 256GB SSD. The system's DLP (LED backlight) projector itself offers a resolution of 864x480 with an aspect ratio of 16:9 and a purported image size of 7 to 85 inches. It promises 75 ANSI lumen brightness, a contrast ratio of around 900:1, and 3LED (RGB) technology. It's not an HD setup but the potential use cases are interesting. A follow-on version capable of 1080p output would be even more useful for gaming and HD video.

Xbox One controller compatibility for Windows PC is nearing public release, Microsoft's Larry Hryb has confirmed.
"Soon. Very soon," Hryb said, replying on a NeoGAF threadrevolving around the subject of when the necessary drivers would be made available via Windows. Microsoft previously stated in August 2013 that Windows support for Xbox One's peripheral would arrive in 2014.
While Microsoft has already confirmed the gamepads will work plugged into a USB port, the company remained vague on if the Windows compatibility will include wireless support as well.
Xbox 360's wired controller supported play on Windows PC out of the box, but wireless 360 controllers require a receiver that didn't arrive until nine months after the console's launch in late 2005.

I mean, of course it’s being worked on, right? But if it’s being worked on, then where the hell is it? Etcetera etcetera.
On what side of the fence you fall will completely dictate whether the following does or does not qualify as news. Nonetheless, here it is regardless:
Former Valve employee and Counter Strike creator Minh Le has told goRGNtv that Half-Life 3 is very much alive and well and is currently being worked on, OXM reports.
"I don't think I can talk about that, to be honest, but I think it's kind of public knowledge, that people know that it is being worked on,†Le remarked.
“And so if I were to say that yeah, I've seen some images, like some concept art of it, that wouldn't be big news to be honest. But yeah, I mean like I guess I could say that I did see something that looked kinda like in the Half-Life universe. And I mean it wouldn't surprise anyone if I said they're doing it, they're working on it, yeah.
“So to go on a limb I'd say I did see some concept art for Half-Life 3.
"There's like a laser sight on my head right now! Somebody's knocking on my door right now. Hopefully that doesn't get out. It seems like old news by now, I think everybody knows it's being worked on."

Wolfenstein: The New Order used a strong launch to knock DayZ off the top spot of this week's Steam top sellers chart.
Supergiant's Transistor also sold its way past Bohemia's Early Access title, grabbing the runner-up spot and relegating DayZ to third.
Pre-orders for Watch Dogs continue to keep the upcoming game near the top of the charts, while discount specials on Dark Souls and The Witcher franchises lifted the past chart-toppers back onto the list.
Here's all ten:
- Wolfenstein: The New Order
- Transistor
- DayZ
- Watch Dogs
- Arma 3
- Planetary Annihilation
- Dark Souls: Prepare To Die Edition
- Dark Souls II
- Tropico 5
- The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings Enhanced Edition

Ubisoft warns that some players "may experience long delays when trying to login" to its servers in order to play the PC version of Watch Dogs, rendering the game unplayable on launch day.
An influx of new players apparently overwhelmed Ubisoft's authentication services, leaving some unable to join or log in to Ubisoft's uPlay network. Kotaku reports that players are experiencing a number of issues as a result, including stalled downloads, in-game crashes, and unrecoverable errors.
Ubisoft has not issued a timeframe for a fix, but notes that affected customers should "stay tuned" for updates.

Super Street Fighter 4: Arcade Edition will be shifting its Game For Window Live version over to Steamworks on 30th May, Capcom has announced. There's only one problem: DLC won't carry over."Unfortunately, both paid and free DLC for the GFWL version will not be transferred over in this process, but Steam should not be affected," wrote Capcom senior online community specialist Peter Rosas. The good news is that the game will still be playable as is on GFWL "for the foreseeable future", ala Dark Souls, despite the fact that the service is eventually shutting down.
Those who own the GFWL version of Super Street Fighter 4: Arcade Edition will automatically receive the option to download the title on Steam once the transition is complete. From there, they'll have the option to copy over their GFWL save data. Those who purchased a retail version of the game will have to activate the product on Steam via the code that came on the back of the instruction booklet.Capcom noted that the next entry in the long-lasting fighting saga, Ultra Street Fighter 4, will launch on Steam upon its August release. The PS3 and Xbox 360 versions will launch in early June for £11.99 / €14.99 / $14.99.

Looking forward to putting a gaming PC in your entertainment center? Keep waiting: Valve says it doesn't expect to officially launch its Steam Machine until 2015. The delay was announced in a rather casual blog post, and the update is loosely worded -- it's a "release window," not a promise. The quality of the controller seems to be the main thing holding back the release: Valve says its getting a substantial amount of feedback. "It means we'll be able to make the controller a lot better," the company writes. "Of course, it's also keeping us pretty busy."

A major Torrent site has reported that over 100,000 gamers have illegally downloaded a copy of Wolfenstein: The New Order since release, despite its intimidatingly large 43.65GB file size.
TorrentFreak provided the numbers along with the theory that the huge file size was an attempt by Bethesda to limit illegal file-sharing. Some torrent users even decided to buy the game after seeding it through file-sharing sites just took too long.
Still, the game had dubious honour of seeing the largest torrent swarms last week.
Wolfenstein: The New Order was UK number one this week, achieving the second biggest release of 2014 just behind Titanfall. It represented 25 per cent of all software sales in the UK last week, and reached number one in the all-formats chart for the first time in the history of the series.

Microsoft has playfully mocked Samsung’s recent rebranding of Heathrow Terminal 5.
The smartphone vendor recently renamed the airport’s terminal to ‘Terminal Samsung Galaxy S5’ as part of a two-week marketing campaign for its latest handset.
In response to the move, Microsoft’s Devices division sent along four spacesuit-clad ‘Lumianauts’ – named for the firm’s smartphone range – who then expressed disappointment that the ‘Galaxy Terminal’ wouldn’t let them blast off into space.
“Lumias have been shot into orbit not once, but twice in the last couple of years,” said Microsoft in acheeky blog post.
“Imagine how excited we were then to learn that you can now reach ‘the Galaxy’ via Heathrow’s Terminal 5.
“Once the brave Lumianauts stepped foot in to the brand new terminal, though, they quickly learned that there was no such thing as a flight to ‘the Galaxy’. Rather, the terminal had taken over by advertising for another mobile phone company.
“With constellation map in-hand they bowed their heads in disappointment and rang HQ: ‘Microsoft…we have a problem.’”
The stunt doesn’t mark the first time Microsoft has attacked another firm’s advertising campaign –with both Apple and Google previously targets of Microsoft's mockery.
Arguably, however, the Lumianauts expressed a much softer and playful attack than past attempts.

Bunnie Huang is both a hardware and software hacker, but that's greatly understating the case: renaissance man is more like it. Bunnie doesn't just tinker with one-off system modifications or console mods (though he's done that, too) -- he creates and repurposes at scale. (He's also an author, respected researcher with interesting thoughts on a wide range of topics, like how to think of the H1N1 flu from the point of view of a security researcher.) Bunnie's latest long-term project has been mentioneda few timeson Slashdot: It's an open-source laptop computer that goes much farther than some other open-source hardware projects, and as a bonus includes an FPGA as well as a conventional -- but unusual -- processor. (Bunnie grants that there are still bits that aren't quite open source, but points out that we also don't have the software that runs the fabs; there's a point of diminishing returns.) A crowd funding campaign (via CrowdSupply) was successful enough to also fund severalstretch goals, including a general purpose breakout board. I talked with Bunnie at the recent Bay Area Maker Faire. (Expect more from that show in coming weeks.) He walked us through the state of the hardware, and talked about some of the design decisions that go into making a computer that is of, by, and for hackers. (Alternate video link)

EA is giving away Battlefield 3 for free to PC gamers.
The publisher is making a habit of offering free titles to Origin users, having previously made the likes of Dead Space and Plants vs Zombies free to download.
Battlefield 3 will remain free until June 4th.
There’s also some good news for Battlefield 4 owners, with DICE VP and GM Karl Magnus Troedsson promising that the confirmation of the Visceral-developed Battlefield Hardline will not shorten its planned support for the title.
“I want to be sure you all understand that introducing Hardline in no way means we’re done working on Battlefield 4,†he insisted.
“Nothing could be further from the truth. The Visceral team is leading the development of Hardline, while the DICE team continues to drive BF4. We are committed to giving you the best BF4 experience possible.
“There are dedicated BF4 teams in Stockholm, Uppsala and LA that will continue to address any issues that might occur. But more importantly will also look to make significant additions to the game. We are also working on a major update to the Battlefield 4 netcode.
“The games we develop are services. We focus on taking care of the games post launch, delivering new content to those of you who want it and always working hard to increase quality of play. We also continue to work hard to keep investing in areas where you tell us you see opportunities for improvements and new features.
“Yes, we’re very excited to partner with Visceral on the development of Battlefield Hardline, but ongoing work to refine and enhance BF4 remains a top priority.â€

With no confirmation of plans for a North American release of Phantasy Star Online 2, it'd be understandable if fans are frustrated by this week's launch of English servers in Southeast Asia, as reported by Siliconera. That's why we paired the news with the above photo of upbeat, happy-to-see-you birds! That ... makes it better, right? No?
To make matters worse, activity on the Phantasy Star Online 2 English Facebook page, as documented by PSO2 Blog, suggests that English-speaking fans living outside of Southeast Asia won't be able to join in due to an IP block for other regions. The page's About section supports this, stating that the English version is published by Asiasoft Online for Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vientam, Indonesia and the Philippines.
The appearance of English-based servers would help explain October's rumor, as reported by Massively, of a Western release of PSO2 being unlikely, despite the game being "fully localized." If that localization work was only for servers in Southeast Asia and will never amount to something that would be used stateside, well ... that's a shame. Don't bother emailing Sega to see what's up, either - the status of a Western PSO2 is among the list of things the publisher can't answer.
