Born Ready Games' space shooter Strike Suit Zero will work its Gundam style January 24 on PC. The game, which achieved its Kickstarter goal of $100K, concluded with $174,804 in contributions.
"We are truly grateful for all the support we've received and above all else want to thank the community," said Born Ready CEO James Brooksby. "Their support has meant we're now able to make the game we'd always envisioned, and we can't wait for our fans to get their hands on it."

With early reports on Windows 8 sales indicating that the new operating system is off to a slow start, it's worth pondering what Microsoft could have done differently. Over at TIME.com, I considered several different scenarios, ranging from one in which it released a much more conventional Windows upgrade to one which would have been much like like the Windows 8 we got — except with the ability to boot directly into the desktop, complete with Start button.

PC developer considers his game a 'tribute' to Cavanagh's
A game similar in style and gameplay to Terry Cavanagh’s Super Hexagon is now available for free on PC, beating the maker’s iOS game to the platform. But Cavanagh is “alright” with it.
Open Hexagon on PC bears many similarities to Super Hexagon, with one of the main differences being adjustable speed.
The developer at Vee Software wrote on his Facebook wall that he had gotten permission from Cavanagh to create a game inspired by Super Hexagon, although he hopes that by creating a game so alike he isn’t “stretching it”.
“I want to make clear that the resemblance to the original game is very high, even if it's not an exact clone,” the developer wrote. “I’ve credited Terry Cavanagh everywhere I could, and I don't want my game to be competition, but a tribute to his work. I got his permission to make a ‘Super Hexagon inspired game’, I just hope this is not stretching it.”
Cavanagh wasn’t expecting Super Hexagon to be “cloned on PC” when he’d given Vee Software permission to use his concept. He has expressed disappointment that Open Hexagon beat Super Hexagon to the PC, but he appears to be okay with it.

corsix-th is reimplementation of the game engine from Theme Hospital.
Quote:
About Version - CorsixTH - ZeroOneOne
Summary of changes in version 0.11 (released 2012-11-17) -
Open source clone of Theme Hospital - Google Project Hosting
This version is a bugfix release only, which means that there are no new features. You will hopefully find this release quite stable. If you want to know more about known problems and not yet implemented features you can have a look at the 0.10 changelog.
Debian packages: There are two versions of debian packages. If you are running Debian "stable", or Ubuntu 12.04 or earlier, choose the one with "stable" in the name, if you are running Debian "testing" or "unstable" releases, or Ubuntu 12.10 or later, choose the other one. Under some circumstances music does not play. We are investigating this.
Android: If you would like to try out the game on your Android device you can find Alan Woolley´s excellent port on his blog. Note that it is in its own experimental stage at the moment.
Gameplay
- Fix: Patients were not fully diagnosed according to settings in the policy screen.
- Fix: The game now handles a player trying to cheat into an earthquake on levels 1-4.
- Fix: It was not possible to sell equipment in rooms if you had a negative balance.
- Fix: Handymen could not be placed inside rooms.
- Fix: Handymen would get called to clean soot in blown up rooms.
- Fix: Machines that need to be repaired will now cancel that request if they are blown up.
- Fix: If a cured patient was leaving a room just as it crashed because of an earthquake the game would throw an error.
- Fix: Alien DNA could under some circumstances not have the "concentrate research" button clicked without triggering a crash.
- Fix: A crash occurring under some circumstances if the player picked up a staff member.
User Interface
- Enchancement: Since consultants are unable to learn new skills icons for not yet fully learned skills are now removed when a doctor is promoted.
- Fix: Disabling background music no longer disables sound effects on Windows.
- Fix: Checking if a sound exists crashed the game if there was no sound archive at all.
- Fix: If the player paused the game from the top menu bar while an earthquake was active it would be impossible to scroll.
Graphics
- Fix: On a few levels some sliding doors would not animate correctly.
- Fix: Vomiting standard males had the wrong animation.

Play To is often an unsung advantage of Windows 8; it's the key to spreading media throughout the home without jumping through hoops, much like Apple's AirPlay or the more universal Miracast. Microsoft wants those quieter Windows advocates to pipe up a bit. It just posted a sweeping developer overview of Play To support that addresses the basics and dives into the nitty-gritty details. The biggest takeaway may be that programmers sometimes don't have to do anything -- unprotected music and video in common formats are usually shareable as a matter of course, and it's only with photos or complicated conditions like playlists that a "contract" is needed to reach another screen or speaker. The document does have some warnings for developers, however, both official and otherwise. There's a (fairly evasive) explanation as to why copy-protected media won't work, while commenters remind us that hardware compatibility isn't as surefire as we'd always like. Any developers who want their media apps to shine on an XPS 12, however, could still find the guide to be just what they need.

Capcom has confirmed that it will release the Street Fighter X Tekken 'Ver. 2013' update slightly later than planned.
Originally announced for a December release, the free update is now planned to go live on January 29."Although the release date has been pushed back slightly from the original December 2012 one, we feel that time can go towards including even more of your input," said Capcom's Tomoaki Ayano.
"From the system to the special moves and everything in between, we've gone over all of your suggestions with the intent of making Ver. 2013 just that much better," they added.
Ayano also detailed more changes that'll be made to the gameplay with the update - full details below. Previously-announced changes to come from the "hefty" update, including balance tweaks to each character - can be found here.
Normal Throws
In addition to reducing the frames on start up from 7F to 5F, we're considering tweaking throws to make them more viable as a way of defeating your opponent's defenses. We aren't looking to up the damage of normal throws with this tweak, so much as we are trying to speed up the matches.
The Vitality Gauge Shaking
We've gotten a lot of feedback asking us to stop the vitality gauge from shaking when taking damage.
However, we've also heard some folks say that having the gauge shake makes it easier to see who took damage when viewing replays.
Both points make sense, however since fighting games require players to make split-second, situation-based decisions, we've decided to go with tweaks that improve visibility for the person actually fighting the match.
Quick Combos
We've also had some feedback telling us that Quick Combos will activate without the player meaning to execute them. Seeing as this really hinders gameplay-which is something we really want to avoid-we're thinking out how to make it so that this doesn't happen.

Grand Theft Auto Vice City has been removed from Steam and other digital retailers.
The only official comment on the matter comes from a Rockstar rep speaking on the Steam forums, who confirmed: “Due to some music licensing issues, we’ve had to temporarily remove Vice City PC from digital stores. We’ll make it available again as soon as possible.”
The game can still be downloaded from Steam by those who have previously purchased it. Rockstar presumably intends to release an altered version with the song removed, though this has not been confirmed.
CinemaBlend then claims to have word that the track in question is Michael Jackson’s Wanna be Startin' Something, which plays on Vice City's Fever 105 in-game radio station.
Sony Music Entertainment has reportedly made the claim.
Vice City is currently pencilled in for an iOS release to coincide with GTA III’s 10th Anniversary this month.

PC publisher Focus Multimedia believes it has one of the year’s biggest PC sellers on its hands in Angry Birds Star Wars.
The firm released a boxed PC version of Rovio’s new game today and claims it will outsell anything else the format has to offer this Christmas.
“Collaborations of this magnitude come with great anticipation and expectation, and Angry Birds Star Wars is hotly tipped to top the PC charts this Christmas,” said PR and marketing manager Alan Wild.
“Angry Birds Star Wars on PC is the perfect opportunity for all retailers to become a part of Rovio’s epic success story.”
Angry Birds Star Wars released for iOS and Android last week. Retailers can contact Focus Multimedia for Angry Birds Star Wars POS materials.

Following recent compromises of the Linux kernel.org and Sourceforge, the FreeBSD Project is now reporting that several machines have been broken into. After a brief outage, ftp.FreeBSD.org and other services appear to be back. The project announcement states that some deprecated services (e.g., cvsup) may be removed rather than restored. Users are advised to check for packages downloaded between certain dates and replace them, although not because known trojans have been found, but rather because the project has not yet been able to confirm that they could not exist. Apparently initial access was via a stolen SSH key, but fortunately the project's clusters were partitioned so that the effects were limited. The announcement contains more detailed information — and we are left wondering, would proprietary companies that get broken into so forthcoming? Should they be?

New microtransactions and virtual currency system options implemented into MMO
Bioware’s MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic has gone free-to-play.
The move to add a free option comes after the title has struggled since its release as a subscription-based game, garnering around one million users.
Although the subscription model has been kept intact, users can now play the game completely for free up to level 50, with new micro-transaction and virtual currency options implemented into the title.
"We want to give our players the freedom to enjoy Star Wars: The Old Republic when and how they want," said BioWare Austin GM Matthew Bromberg.
"There has never been a better time to start playing with us."

The city of Freiburg, Germany adopted OpenOffice back in 2007, mostly replacing the Microsoft Office software it had been using previously. Now, an anonymous reader tips news that the city council is preparing to abandon OpenOffice and switch back."'In the specific case of the use of OpenOffice, the hopes and expectations of the year 2007 are not fulfilled,' the council wrote, adding that continuing use OpenOffice will lead to performance impairments and aggravation and frustration on the part of employees and external parties. 'Therefore, a new Microsoft Office license is essential for effective operations,' they wrote. ... 'The divergence of the development community (LibreOffice on one hand Apache Office on the other) is crippling for the development for OpenOffice,' the council wrote, adding that the development of Microsoft Office is far more stable. Looking at the options, a one-product strategy with Microsoft Office 2010 is the only viable one, according to the council."The council was also disappointed that more municipalities haven't adopted OpenOffice in the meantime. Open source groups and developers criticized the move and encouraged the council to consider at least moving to a more up-to-date version of the office software suite.

"With the Linux Steam beta giving Ubuntu and its large userbase all the love, other Linux gamers understandably want to be let in on the fun. For the beta, Valve has provided Steam as a Debian package. Many hungry Linux gamers have reported that they have Steam running on their favorite distro, but that still leaves the legal debate. What is the legal threshold needed to get Steam in the repos of your preferred flavor of Linux? Will Valve's one-size-fits-every-OS license be flexible to work on Linux or will it delay the dream of a viable gaming world for Linux? We are so close to bridging the last major hurdle in finally realizing the year of the Linux desktop: Gaming. Lets hope the FOSS community and Valve can play together so we all win."

We've had the chance to experiment with early versions of Firefox OS for awhile -- just not in Firefox the browser, where you'd nearly expect it to have shown first. At least one person appreciates that seemingly natural fit. A new Firefox OS simulator add-on, r2d2b2g, lets us try Mozilla's upcoming mobile platform from within the company's own browser for everything that doesn't depend on native hardware, including the browser and Firefox Marketplace. The goal is ostensibly to let developers test truly optimized web apps, although the simulator is also a good excuse for the curious to try Firefox OS without the hassle of a dedicated client or a real smartphone. If you can get by the early state of the simulator and the Xzibit jokes that come with putting Firefox on your Firefox, the extension is already providing a glimpse of a web-focused mobile future to Linux, Mac and Windows users at the source

OnLive has announced the release of its game-streaming app on LG G2 Series TVs powered by Google TV. The OnLive/LG partnership was first revealed during this year's E3, where OnLive demoed the service on LG televisions. No extra console is necessary, just OnLive's wireless controller. Current LG G2 owners can download an update for their sets, while the app will come pre-installed on all LG G2's sold from now on.
“We are proud to be working with OnLive to deliver an incredible home entertainment experience with a full range of interactive viewing and gaming possibilities on LG G2 Series TVs,” said Georg Rasinski, Director of Home Entertainment Brand Management, LG Electronics USA. “OnLive's premium-quality gaming service offers customers a great opportunity to test the dual-core performance of our G2 Series TVs. We think customers will be very impressed.”
“Our partnership with LG has enabled us to take an important step forward in making high-end gaming accessible to everyone, across a variety of consumer electronic devices,” said OnLive chairman Gary Lauder. “Gamers can now enjoy hundreds of amazing console-quality games with no new hardware necessary beyond an OnLive controller and LG's fast and intuitive Google TV.”
This is not the first game-streaming service that LG has partnered with: back in January, Gaikai announced that its service would be integrated into LG Cinema 3D TVs.

One of the more popular iOS games of late has been forced to drop its free-to-play model and instead ask players to pay up front.
Punch Quest was a hit with critics not only for its gameplay but also for its generous freemium model that allowed players to choose between coughing up for extras or earning them in-game.
At a time when the increasing demands of freemium games on players is attracting growing criticism, Punch Quest felt like a breath of fresh air. Unfortunately the generosity of design has come back to haunt developers Madgarden and Rocketcat Games.
Touch Arcade reports that despite 600,000 downloads the game had struggled to reach five figure revenues. An update to the game earlier this month altered the reward balance, offering additional IAP and improving the visibility of purchases.
It didn’t work. So as of now the game now costs 69p to download.
Rocketcat’s Kepa Auwae said: "The update improved things for like a few days, and then it sank, hard. We did that last Punch Quest update that fixed a lot of the problems people pointed out when they gave for Punch Quest. More high-end purchases, a coin doubler, a non-coins IAP option, a clearer buy button – didn't work.
“That leaves one simple thing – the game is way too generous to be a single currency free game. It's 99 cents or increase the price of everything by eight times or more, really."
