Ask an RPG fan for a recommendation, and you are perhaps as likely to hear about a game that's a decade old as you would a recent release. That's because role-playing games can stand the test of time. Take a look at GOG.com's best-selling games, and the first eight are all RPGs, with many more filling out the top parts of the list. It would seem that with most other genres, there's an assumption that a newer game is a better game – unless there's some kind of terrible design choice. What makes role-playing games specifically have such long-term value?
The strong stories in role-playing games are one major reason for their longevity. Alongside adventure games, RPGs have long been at the forefront of storytelling innovations within the medium. And a story isn't going to become outdated. I may prefer Ultima VII's or Mass Effect 2's interfaces and graphics toUltima VI and the first Mass Effect, but I find the storytelling more appealing in the chronologically earlier games. Improved technology can't make this obsolete.

They may technically be considered "Activision" games, as that company currently has the rights to all of them, but the new GOG offers include what you'd think of as Sierra games (Gabriel Knight, Space Quest, Phantasmagoria) Infocom games (The Zork Anthology) and ... oh, Activision games (Interstate '76).
They're all on sale for 60% off this weekend. You can get the whole bundle for $94.89, if you like ... massive, thematically incomprehensible collections.

Bruce Grove, general manager of OnLive in the UK, revealed a 12-month "recovery plan" for the company in an interview with MCV UK. The plan involves building more partnerships to expand the service's reach, though Grove didn't specify who the company would partner with in the future.
"We have a road map for how soon we start with certain things, what the focus is, what we're going to be doing, what the next twelve months will be. And that's a big shift for the company: Having a 12-month plan," Grove said. "That's something that's going to show how we'll build this into a long-term sustainable business."
OnLive went through a rocky period of transition before former CEO Steve Perlman left the company in August. The company cut 50 percent of its staff prior to spinning off into a new company entirely while maintaining the OnLive brand and service.
"In the past we've been very focused on OnLive being the driving force of wherever we've gone. Now, it's much more about engagement with our partners. That's going to be the way we reach the new customer market," Grove said.

AMD's Trinity APUs have only been in the wild for a few days, but some have already taken on the challenge of pushing the new desktop silicon to its limits. By giving the A10-5800K model 1.956 volts, disabling two of its cores and cooling it with liquid nitrogen, overclockers were able to push the chip to 7.3GHz. Air-cooling and 1.616 volts squeezed out 5.1GHz without sacrificing any cores. If you're a mere mortal who's fresh out of liquid nitrogen (or never had any to begin with), you should be able tocomfortably bump CPU performance by roughly 10 percent and GPU speeds by 15 to 17 percent. For the full specs on this particular overclock, hit the source links below.

Maine state senate candidate Colleen Lachowicz plays World of Warcraft. The opposing party in Mainehas issued a press release attacking her for her Level 85 Orc Assassination Rogue. From the article: 'In an unusual press release issued Thursday, the Maine GOP attacked Lachowicz for a “bizarre double life” in which she’s a devotee of the hugely popular online role-playing game World of Warcraft. In the game, she’s “Santiaga,” an "orc assassination rogue" with green skin, fangs, a Mohawk and pointy ears.' Her incumbent, much to his credit, rejects the attack as 'mudslinging politics

When Sony's designers put a port flap on the Xperia Tablet S in an effort to make it splash-proof, they surely didn't count on their good intentions being undermined by leaky build quality in other areas. According to Reuters though, that's exactly what has happened: a number of tablets have come off the production line with gaps between the screen and the chassis, and it must be a significant proportion because Sony has now decided to halt sales until it can get the problem fixed. The company is also promising to repair any of the 100,000 tablets that have already shipped, but doesn't expect the issue to be serious enough to dampen its earnings (which, let's face it, could already do with some time out in the sun).

A Skyrim modder going by the name of Clintmich has introduced a netherworld more disconcerting than even the planes of Oblivion to Elder Scrolls’ world, in the form of Super Skyrim Bros.Accessible from a bed in one of Skyrim’s abandoned houses, the mod opens up a five-world fever dream that sees Nintendo’s colourful characters brought to life in Bethesda’s Creation Engine. There are Goombas, Koopa Troopas, a kidnapped Princess Peach and even Bowser (looking disturbingly like a motion-captured man in a costume). You can see it all in action below – thanks to PC Gamer for spotting this.

Samsung has estimated an all-time high quarterly operating profit of $7.3 billion (£4.5bn), almost double last year’s figure.
Smartphone sales drive much of the profit at the company, which also makes screens, semiconductors and TVs.
"Stronger than expected sales of Galaxy S3 and high-end television models appear to have propelled strong earnings growth in the third quarter," said analysis Lee Sun-Tae, from NH Investment & Securities.
Analysts believe that almost 70 per cent of Samsung’s operating profit was from its mobile communications business. Despite Apple reducing orders of Samsung’s components for its iPhone 5, experts say the company’s display division likely earned more profit than a year earlier as the demand for smartphones benefited sales of AMOLED hi-res screens.
“The high-end smartphone market is split between Samsung and Apple, with their operating profit margins staying high at 30-50 percent at present,” Nomura analyst Marcello Ahn said.
“Going forward, if price competition between the two intensifies, we think smartphone margins may decline at a pace faster than our expectation.”
Samsung’s estimated profits have sent its shares 1.5 per cent higher.

Microsoft will throw its Surface tablet a midnight launch event to coincide with the release of the company’s latest OS Windows 8.
The Verge reports Microsoft has begun sending out invites for a special ‘Surface Reception’ shindig on October 25th that will lead up to the tablet’s launch at midnight on October 26th.
Select Microsoft holiday pop-up stores will be open at the late hour to start moving devices right away, with other stores selling it the following morning during regular hours.
We had heard previously that the company planned on launching the tablet alongside Windows 8 this month, but details beyond that were few and far between.
Unfortunately, price point info for the tablet is still absent, though Microsoft’s CEO Steve Ballmer hinted that the pricing sweet spot would be “probably $300 to about $700 or $800.”

After previously predicting that 22 million ultrabooks would ship by the end of 2012, Analyst house IHS iSuppli has now cut that forecast to 10.3 million.
2013 doesn’t look much better, as iSuppli’s estimates for next year have fallen from 61 to 44 million units.
This news will be particularly disappointing for Intel. The chipmaker has put considerable marketing promotion behind ultrabooks and has invested $400 million in subsiding the use of high-quality displays and SSDs.
"So far, the PC industry has failed to create the kind of buzz and excitement among consumers that is required to propel ultrabooks into the mainstream," said Craig Stice, senior principal analyst for computer platforms at IHS.
"This is especially a problem amid all the hype surrounding media tablets and smartphones. When combined with other factors, including prohibitively high pricing, this means that ultrabook sales will not meet expectations in 2012."
IHS believes that more than half of the expected shipments will happen after Microsoft’s new OS is released and a host of Windows 8 ultrabooks enter the market.

After two rounds of speculation, we finally have an accurate read on Blizzard'sMists of Pandaria sales numbers. The firm moved approximately 2.7 million copies of World of Warcraft since its September 25th launch. This doesn't count sales in China, where the expansion debuted on October 2nd. The company also reports that its global player base has surged upwards of 10 million subscribers.
"With Mists of Pandaria, we set out to expand on the sense of fun and discovery that's always been at the heart of World of Warcraft -- in addition to adding a huge variety of new content and features to the game," said Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime. "It's been gratifying to see the results of all of the work we put into this expansion and to hear all of the positive feedback from players so far."

Skyrim's Dovamestic "Hearthfire" add-on is available now on PC. The $5 piece of country kitchen downloadable content allows players to buy land, build a home, raise a family and live out a simulated Elder Scrolls adventuring housefrau life. The pack is available in English, French, Italian, German and Spanish through Steam.
With the Dawnguard and Hearthfire expansions both available now on Xbox 360 and PC, PS3 owners have every right to ask, "What about us?" Well, there's still no answer to that.
"I don't have any info on Hearthfire, Dawnguard, or DLC in general for PS3," Bethesda VP of marketing and PR Pete Hines wrote on Twitter. "We're still on it. Will share update when I have one."

While the rhythms of authenticity and graphics aren't faint, the drum Relic Entertainment is keenest to bang with Company of Heroes 2 is that of getting commanders to play smart. Quinn Duffy, the game's director, tells us that from a gameplay standpoint the biggest thing his team is focusing on is re-injecting tactics into its real-time strategy.
"We want to be rewarding smart players," Duffy told us, "It's not an APM (actions-per-minute) game. To play Company of Heroes 2 you need to play smart and be aggressive in your decision making. We want smart players to be able to maximize the value of their units. A guy playing smart with his defenses and his cover and his movement, you want him to beat up on a guy with three squads."

Omerta - City of Gangsters, from Tropico developer Haemimont games, will smuggle copies in crates of booze to retail in early 2013 for Xbox 360 and PC.Omerta was originally going to invite us to build some speakeasies this November. A representative for publisher Kalypso tells us that the company is currently "aiming for early February" as its new release window.
Omerta departs from the simulation aspects of Tropico by also providing a turn-based battle system. A team of thugs is selected to carry out missions and help raise capital for your Prohibition era empire. Think of it as 1920s XCOMwithout the aliens.

Announced back in July, the 'Jewel of the Nile' DLC pack for Serious Sam 3: BFEfinally has a launch date: October 16. Jewel of the Nile features three campaign missions that take place during the middle of the single-player story, transporting Sam and his tight white t-shirt to the Temple of Isis on the island of Philae.
All three missions will be playable alone and in co-op, and feature a few new weapons for an asking price of $9.99. Sam will even encounter "a monstrous temple guardian" boss and probably a bunch of other screaming monsters, because that's what happens in Sam's world. He'll even have to fight an Aludran Reptiloid but you probably already knew that because you saw the screen above. Look how perceptive you are!

Acer was one of many companies to preview its Windows 8 devices at Computex this summer, showing off its Iconia W700 tablet along with the W510. As the release date for Microsoft's much-anticipated OS draws near, Acer is announcing the slate once again, this time with full pricing and availability.
To jog your memory, the Iconia W700 is an 11.6-inch slate with a Core i3 or Core i5 Ivy Bridge chip under the hood. As we've come to expect from Iconia devices, the W700 boasts an IPS display, and this particular panel has a 1,920 x 1,080 resolution. There's a 1-megapixel, 720p front-facing shooter, and a 5-megapixel camera capable of 1080p video capture sits on the back. The tablet comes with a cradle that sports three USB 3.0 ports and lets you dock the device in either landscape or portrait mode. A Bluetooth keyboard, which comes already already paired with the tablet, is included in the box, along with an HDMI-to-VGA dongle.
Acer says the tablet is good for up to eight hours of usage. The W700 will be available in three configuration options, all of which will go on sale October 26th. For $800, you get a Core i3 CPU, 4GB of RAM and an 64GB SSD. Stepping up to $900 gets you a Core i5 CPU and the same RAM and memory options, while the $1,000 model includes a Core i3 processor, 4GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD. Head past the break for the full PR, plus our hands-on video, in case you needed a refresher.

Well well, it looks like Microsoft's getting all its Windows 8 ducks in a row today. First, it sends out the invite for the Windows 8 launch event and a save the date for a Windows Phone 8 party, and now it looks like one of its Surface tablets has garnered FCC approval. Dubbed the Model 1516, the device in question can't be confirmed as a Surface slate, but we do know it's running Windows RT and has a membrane keyboard peripheral thanks to the docs submitted to Uncle Sam. We also know that it's got a stand, as the FCC label will be residing on the back panel beneath it, and the radios on board are of the Bluetooth and 802.11 a/b/g/n WiFi variety. Does that add up to a Surface RT tablet? We sure think so, but see the evidence for yourself at the source link below.

The ASUS VivoTab RT is heading to AT&T exclusively this winter with 4G LTE -- that much we already knew. But how does it feel? Well, it feels like a super thin (0.33-inches) and light (1.1 lb.) Windows 8 RT tablet. The Tegra 3 quad-core processor packs more than enough power into the 10.1-inch, multitouch Super IPS screen to make swapping between apps and other such affairs a smooth snap, and 2GB of internal RAM certainly doesn't hurt in the speed department either. That 10.1-inch screen comes with ASUS' "TruVid" technology, which intends to make your viewing experiences all the more magical -- the screen looked plenty nice to us, as did media displayed on it, but perhaps not the "brilliant viewing experience" that ASUS is touting. There's still no price for the device or its non-RT cousin (not to mention those AT&T data plans), but we expect to hear more in the near future -- winter's only so long, right?
