GfK has noted that the success of tablet devices has been a mixed blessing for the wider IT industry.
In a recent newsletter, GfK analyst Dominic Ashford highlights the fact that tablets sales at retail are now equal to those of laptops, and although they have been a significant boost to the channel in recent years, they have had adverse effects in other areas.
Sales of boxed software have fallen by 14 per cent over the last two years, which GfK partly attributes to a fall in demand for laptops and netbooks but also notes that these media devices are designed primarily to utilise app downloads.
However, there have also been benefits too. Sales of keyboards for media tablets have increasing in volume by 88 per cent year-on-year, with average selling prices that are 278 per cent higher than traditional PC keyboards.

September 28th, 2012, 23:25 Posted By: wraggster
24 years ago, a small Leeds-based developer released a game which would define a generation.
Available initially on Atari ST and Commodore Amiga, Carrier Command was an ambitious simulation of ground, sea and air warfare conducted over randomly-generated archipelagos. Players manufactured vehicles and then joined in the war directly.
It was a groundbreaking release, and one which was rightly celebrated. The Games Machine awarded the Atari ST and Amiga versions 98 and 97 per cent respectively and ranked Carrier Command the number one game of 1988. Advanced Computer Entertainment scored the PC version 965/1000; ST Action rated it 91 per cent.
Bohemia Interactive, most famous for the ARMA series of military games, today releases Carrier Command: Gaea Mission, a labour of love designed and developed as a bold re-imagining of the original.
The game’s strategy mode is as close to the original as possible – but updated with the whizzes and bangs that modern games players demand.
But how close is it to the spirit of the original? UK publisher Mastertronic decided to find out, tracking down three journalists who reviewed the original all those years ago.
Paul Presley, Andy Smith and Nick Clarkson were tempted out of reviews retirement for one last job, and the results are revealed today in a review that pays homage to the games magazines of yesteryear.
“As a publisher that was around at the time, re-assembling some of the best journalists of days gone by was an opportunity too good to pass,” says Andy Payne, Mastertronic. “It’s been a real joy working with Paul, Andy and Nick, and I’m delighted Gaea Mission lived up to their memories of Carrier Command.
Bohemia Interactive’s Carried Command: Gaea Mission is published by Mastertronic today for Xbox 360 and PC.

Sports Interactive and SEGA, the developer and publisher behind the best-selling Football Manager series, are pleased to announce the release date for this year’s game. Football Manager 2013 will be released across the world on Friday, November 2nd.
And for those fans who can’t wait until then, there’s even better news. Anyone who pre-orders this year’s game through a participating retail partner will be rewarded with something almost priceless… early access to a fully-playable version of the game.
Any fan who pre-orders (or pre-purchases) Football Manager 2013 – either boxed or as a digital download – will receive a unique code giving access to a pre-release, single-player ‘Beta’ version of the game around 14 days prior to the official launch date.
“Our fans are very good at letting us know what they want and the one thing that’s consistently at the top of their wish list is an earlier release date,” says Sports Interactive’s Studio Director Miles Jacobson. “While we can’t, strictly speaking, offer them exactly what they want, this Beta version is the next best thing… a fully playable Football Manager they can get their hands on around two weeks before the finished game hits the streets.”
The Beta version of Football Manager 13 will give access to most of the forthcoming game’s features, including the all-new Football Manager Classic mode and the short-term Challenges (for more information, go towww.footballmanager.com/features).
The Beta version will remain fully functional until Monday, November 5th, after which it will no longer be playable. However, the Beta version’s saved games will be fully compatible with the final release, so none of the player’s progress over the pre-release period will be lost.
Football Manager 2013 will be published by SEGA for Windows PC and Mac on November 2nd 2012. Further information on the game’s new and enhanced features is currently being unveiled in a series of video blogs which can be viewed on the official website, www.footballmanager.com.

September 28th, 2012, 22:40 Posted By: wraggster
Joymax, leading online game developer and publisher widely known for Silkroad Online and Digimon Masters, today revealed key features of its unique guild system for the recently launched free-to-play, fantasy MMORPG with unique riding action,Knight Age. This in-depth look comes on the heel of Knight Age’s first major update since its recent successful launch.
The game also boasts a special feature; “Order of Knights.” This is Knight Age’s guild system, but it’s not your ordinary guild system; the Order of Knights features guild level-ups, guild skills and even guild wars! Players at level 10 can start the Order of Knights, but the battle is just beginning to become the best!
Here’s an in-depth look at the Order of Knights
Guild Level – Each Order of Knights is given a guild level where players can work on leveling up, and all Order of Knights are given the usual features and skills of shared guild storage or warp system (where guild members can warp to each other’s locations). As the guild level grows, Order of Knights is given larger storage and an increased number of spots to recruit more guild members. This is useful especially for gaining experience points, as every guild member playing online boosts the EXP buff that all guild members share. But the most exciting skills are unlocked once a guild level rises to higher levels!
Guild Skill – As the Order of Knights level grows higher, players will find there are up to 50 different special guild skills to unlock. These guild skills will affect every guild member and will range from higher EXP gain to higher gold drops. Ultimately, there is a skill for healing all of the guild members at once! So, how does the Order of Knights level up? The only means is by battling with other Order of Knights in a guild war!
So, on to Guild PVP – Guild PVP is the battle between two Orders of Knights and, aside from proving which Order of Knights is better, winning a PVP will earn points to level up your guild level! Each guild PVP begins with a challenge letter to the opposing Order of Knights and the war begins once accepted. Lasting from three to thirty days, the two Orders of Knights will be marked as an enemy to each other. For every fallen opponent, points are stacked and ultimately the guild with the highest points wins the round!
This guide is merely the tip of the iceberg for what is in store. With new events beginning this week, now is the best time to experience all the fast-paced action of the newly released Knight Age! To take your seat at the round table, players can download and play the game for free athttp://www.joymax.com/knightage/.
Players should also visit the Knight Age Facebook athttp://www.facebook.com/officialknightage which is chocked full of daily news, tips and in-game images.

Vivec Entertainment announces postponement until May 2013 of the first-person horror adventure game Shadow of a Soul (SOAS).
“Ever since the first trailer of the game, ‘The Room,’ was released on December 20, 2012, the response from gamers has been uniformly positive and encouraging. As an indie developer, I want to create a game that is worthy of all the support I’ve received thus far. I’ve decided to postpone the release in order to fully achieve my goal of creating an intense and scary game,” says Ferzan K. Aygen, CEO of Vivec Entertainment.
SOAS revolves around a thief named Jack who is on an industrial espionage mission to steal the blueprints of a new product. At the office complex, he discovers much more to the place than originally meets the eye. The unnatural sounds and horrifying visions give Jack the unnerving feeling he has been ensnared by a malignant presence. Jack's terrifying journey will lead him to several mysterious encounters that leave indelible marks on his mind, as well as on his flesh.
SOAS has been in development for two years and contains 12-16 hours of game play. The game will retail at USD19.99. Developed primarily for Windows and Macintosh platforms, the original version is slated for release at the end of May 2013 with the exact date yet to be announced.
Gamers can pre-order SOAS for $15.99 now and save 20% on the official purchase price, plus earn a producer credit and download at no extra cost three ambient tracks from the game. A PS3 version of the game is planned for an early 2014 release.

As the game is now really massive and complicated, DJArcas is going to try and do a series of Dev Diaries, showing progress, with each of the videos focussing on a single gameplay element.
As the game evolves over several hours from a soldat-style run-and-gun to a very unique crafting-guns-and-tower-defence game, it's proving very hard to work out how to make long videos, so we'll try the short-video approach, and see what happens!
DropPods are used to return NPCs back to your base safely, without you having to babysit them. Currently they're free, but I shall be adding a cost in soon enough. With some luck, the DropPod patch will be available by the time you read this!

Digital Emmy® Award-winning game developer, Secret Location, in conjunction with Fresh TV Inc. and FremantleMedia Enterprises (FME), the commercial and brand extension arm of FremantleMedia, are taking a bite out of vampire-genre apps with the release of Humans VS Vampires, the official app for the hit show, My Babysitter’s a Vampire.
The series, developed and produced by Fresh TV in association with TELETOON Canada Inc., is a fun, family-friendly tween program that reminds kids everywhere that, no matter what kind of supernatural villains the world has in store, the scariest thing of all is still: High School! My Babysitter’s a Vampire is currently in its second season on the Disney Channel in the US and premiered this past summer to record high ratings.
The Humans VS Vampires app builds on the success of the award-winning 3D online game of the same name, which at more than 6.5 million views and counting, is the number one most-played web game on TELETOON’s TV network website.
As a result of this high demand, the game was quickly rebuilt for mobile using the same in-depth game design and mechanics. As a result, the app is a rich experience, featuring addictive level progressions, challenging game play modes and high-poly 3D characters modeled and animated to look and move the way the show’s stars do.
“Humans VS Vampires goes far beyond the typical properties,” says Secret Location Executive Producer James Milward. “It provides a rich gaming experience scaled down to a mobile format that works.”
Nicholas Dale, Senior Manager of Mobile & Interactive for brand licensor FME, added, “We are very excited to partner with The Secret Location to bring the Humans VS Vampires game to devoted My Babysitter’s a Vampire fans. Viewers are craving additional interactive content on mobile devices so we are continuously dedicated to offering more immersive experiences to keep them engaged.”
The new Humans VS Vampires app is jam-packed with photorealistic, high-end graphics, fear-inducing opponents and five levels to beat. Humans VS Vampires is a sophisticated gaming experience, breaking from the usual “vamp yourself” apps in this genre.
Inspired by retro arcade games like Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat, Humans VS Vampires delivers a classic hand-to-hand combat experience, without deferring to the 8-bit look. With slick graphics, and added features such as cryptic clues and badges, the game feels modern and challenges the user to keep playing. Missions take on increasing difficulty as players fight the easiest opponent to the strongest – human or vampire – depending on which side is chosen.
Humans VS Vampires is available for free from the App Store on iPhone and iPod Touch. A one-time 99-cent in-app upgrade allows players to unlock 10 characters – five good guys and five undead characters.
The game was developed for TELETOON and Fresh TV by Secret Location with support from the Bell Broadcast and New Media Fund. Fans can download the app today and unlock the first of two special characters – Boltz: a Frankenstein jock made-up of star hockey player body parts.

HD Interactive and Most Wanted Entertainment have announced the next stage in their quest to develop a sequel to their highly-rated Space RTS gameNexus: The Jupiter Incident, with the company launching a campaign on high-profile crowdfunding site Kickstarter to supplement their own financing.
"Nexus 2 is a very special project for the company", said company director Mike Horneman, "Nexus was our first game, and we still have many of the original team-members on board, with full plans in place for what we'd do for a sequel".
Launched in 2004, the game was highly acclaimed as one of the best spaceship battle games ever made, and continues to attract fans even to this day.
"We re-launched the original Nexus on Steam a while ago, and even now we see a substantial amount of new players buying the game each month", said Horneman. "We have a very vocal fan base, and know that there's a large number of people out there who would love to see a sequel made".
HD and MWE are looking to finance the project with a mixture of their own funds supported by crowdfunding.
"We're happy to put a large chunk of our own resources into making Nexus 2", said Horneman, "but realistically we cannot fund the whole project ourselves. So, with Kickstarter, we can offer all our fans out there a chance to be part of the Nexus 2 project.”
“The more you pledge, the more you will benefit; from thanks in the credits, through special boxed editions, right up to designing spaceships that will appear in the game. The largest donor will also receive a completely unique version of the game, where he or she is the hero, complete with facial likeness and voice over. We’re all very excited!”
You can find more info on the game as well as the funding details here: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/...aken?ref=email

Launching today, the latest version of swashbuckling MMO, Pockie Pirates, introduces a tidal wave of One Piece inspired upgrades and improvements. Questing to become the “King of the Pirates” has never been so much fun.
Each gender of the four available character classes: Doctor, Sniper, Navigator, and Swordsman, has been recreated based on the appearance of famous One Piece characters.
Now, the male version of the Doctor draws inspiration from Megaro - the beloved pet of Mermaid Princess, Shirahosi – adopting shark like features. The female variant is modelled on Trafalgar Law - the Surgeon of Death, who carries the symbol of the doctor in the form of a cross-shaped sword.
Beautiful One Piece mermaid, Shirahosi, is the striking new image of the female Navigator, while the male equivalent is modelled on the exotic and noble CP9 Rob Lucci.
Franky, who terrifyingly integrates both body and weapons together, now represents the male Sniper class. The winged Skypiea residents take the place of the female form - antennas included.
The male Great Swordsman is based on the powerful Santoryu Zoro, while the female version rides the lovable Lapahn from Drum Island into battle - wielding a total of four swords at once.
New battle effects have been introduced to complement the updated characters, coupled with an improved, user-friendly UI, making the battlefield more exciting and intuitive to command than ever before.
A host of gameplay refinements inspired by community suggestions have also been put in place to further improve the experience, including the ability to initiate boss battles with a single click, a rebalancing of the notoriously tough Impel Down challenge, and revamped tournament rules. Finally, a newbie friendly NPC known as Chopper has been added to the game, who smooths the learning curve by instructing players on how to earn vital resources, such as Silver, Vitality, Gold, and Prestige, at the beginning of their adventure.

Thousands of players around the world are already dreaming uneasily as the upcoming title from Senscape rises in popularity.
Asylum is a chilling journey through the intricate floors of the Hanwell Mental Institute, in which unimaginable atrocities have occurred in the past. Over four years in production, this horror adventure aims to marry cutting edge visuals with thrilling storytelling to give players the ultimate experience in fear. Asylum is authored by the designer of the award-winning and cult sleeper hit Scratches.
Following an acclaimed "Interactive Teaser" released at Gamescom 2012 and downloaded over 50.000 times, Asylum was submitted to Steam Greenlight with great success: in only ten days it broke the Top 50 games on the site and keeps climbing the charts. By popular demand from the gaming community, Senscape is now announcing its commitment to ensure the game is available in several more languages besides English: French, German, Italian, Russian, Spanish, Greek and Turkish are confirmed.
Steam Greenlight is a new system that enlists the community's help in picking some of the next games to be released on Steam. The publication for Asylum can be found here.
Key features include:
· A mature and disturbing horror storyline that will haunt players for years to come
· High definition graphics that remain sharp on the largest monitors
· One of the biggest virtual buildings ever created for a game
· Around 100 rooms to explore in breathtaking detail
· Featuring the voice of industry veteran Josh Mandel
· Over 15 hours of gameplay estimated
The Interactive Teaser supporting Windows, Mac OS X and Linux can be downloaded from the following link: www.FaceTheHorror.com/teaser

Indie Royale (http://www.indieroyale.com/) debuts its Oktoberfest Bundle filled with six great indie games, which includes point and click title Hector: Badge of Carnage (all 3 episodes) and puzzle platformer Adventures of Shuggy.
The first game in the bundle is about a beer loving and delightfully crass British detective in the Hector: Badge of Carnage Trilogy from The Walking Dead developer Telltale Games and co-creator Straandlooper, available for Windows and Mac on Steam, Desura and DRM-Free (includes all 3 episodes). This adult-themed point and click adventure offers brain-teasing puzzles with a twist: the solution often requires getting inside Hector's warped mind.
A grungier version of The Curse of Monkey Island, Hector offers stylized art and a twisted sense of humor. Adventure Gamers says of Hector, it's "just what the doctor ordered, even if that doctor is almost certainly facing a malpractice suit for sending us into such a germ-ridden locale."
Also included is musical puzzle game Chime published by Doublesix Digital Publishing and developed by Zoe Mode, available for Windows on Steam.Chime offers an experience about more than just scoring points - it's about creating something musically beautiful while placing shapes on a geometric grid. This hypnotic game is polished in its presentation and includes fantastic yet mellow songs from luminaries like Philip Glass, Moby, and Paul Hartnoll (Orbital), as well as a special PC exclusive, 'Still Alive' from Valve's Portal. Destructoid calls Chime an "utterly compelling, aesthetically minimalistic puzzle game that rides the cusp of being entirely fantastic."
Another highlight of this bundle is a game that celebrates puzzle platformers with a googly-eyed vampire, Smudged Cat Games' Adventures of Shuggy, available for Windows on Steam, Desura and DRM-Free. A critically acclaimed XBLA title now available on PC, Adventures of Shuggy offers a clever rotation/time-shift mechanic, 36 co-op levels, and over 150 single-player levels. Gamezebo applauds Adventures of Shuggy for its " top-notch presentation and a real attention to detail with things like great music and comic-book-style."
Also included is a critically acclaimed puzzle-adventure game with a twist from Mousechief, Dangerous High School Girls In Trouble, available for Windows and Mac on Steam, Desura and DRM-Free. Set in, Brigiton, a fictional small town in the U.S. during the 1920s, one plays a high-school girl who has set out to investigate mysterious crimes by navigating through a game board-like world and engaging in mini battles of social warfare. Offering irreverent dialogue, multiple endings, unique game style, an enthralling story, and at least 15 hours of gameplay, Dangerous High School Girls In Trouble is worth checking out. GamesRadar recognizes this game for being "clever, original and genuinely pleasing to play."
The second title from Mousechief is bonus game/visual novel The Witch's Yarn available for Windows and Mac on Desura and DRM-Free. The Witch's Yarn exists in a genre of its own; it's best described as a story-driven interactive drama. GameBoomers calls the genre "Graphical Interactive Fiction," as the player assumes a role similar to that of a director of a play and decides how the scenes will unfold. The game offers a fully interactive story with colorful and playful graphics about a modern-day, middle-aged widow who also happens to be a witch, as she opens a yarn shop and navigates familial challenges.
Last is conceptual retro style shooter from AquaFox The Network, available for Windows on Desura and DRM-Free. It offers classic arena top-down shooting with a twist; the player never directly fires a bullet. Offering immersive play, 20+ levels, a unique art style, and an engrossing story line, DualShockers raves that The Network "succeeds as a complement to surreal films like The Matrix that make you second-guess trusting your computer."
And for those who pay $8 USD or their currency equivalent during the Oktoberfest Bundle will get two music albums from SAVESTATES (Matt Wilson), who is known for creating standout chiptune music. The first album, Calm Your Nerves (http://savestates.bandcamp.com/album/calm-your-nerves), offers 10 tracks that the artist created "for stress; the manufacture, the prevention, and the acceleration thereof." Also included is Chip unDeath(http://savestates.bandcamp.com/album/chip-undeath) based on SAVESTATES' first acclaimed album 'Chip Death' but with 7 reworked tracks and a brand new track.
More information on the Oktoberfest Bundle, including real-time statistics and its current price, can be found on its official website (http://www.indieroyale.com/) or its Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/IndieRoyale) and Twitter (http://www.twitter.com/indieroyale) pages.
