The march to the launch of Windows 8 soldiers on, as Microsoft has now opened the Windows Store for submissions from individuals in anticipation of the grand OS launch on October 26th. Previously, only those with company accounts were able to submit their applications for consideration in the Windows Store. The big news doesn't end there, however, as Microsoft has also added 82 new markets for app submission, which means that in total, developers from 120 markets may now publish their applications to the Windows Store.
In additional news, Microsoft has also revealed that many MSDN subscribers will receive a free, one-year developer account to the Windows Store -- eligible subscription levels include Visual Studio Professional, Test Professional, Premium, Ultimate, and BizSpark. Similarly, students that take part in Microsoft's DreamSpark program will have their subscription fees waived. As it stands, both Windows 8 apps and traditional applications may be submitted for inclusion in the Windows Store, however in the case of applications for the desktop environment, purchasers will be re-routed to individual developer sites to make their purchase and grab the download.

Chip maker puts money into CiiNOW as start-up's AMD Radeon-powered turnkey streaming service debuts
AMD is the latest company to put its head into the clouds, as the chip maker today announced an investment into cloud gaming start-up CiiNOW.
The investment, conducted through the AMD Ventures program, calls for CiiNOW's eponymous service to be powered by AMD Radeon graphics chips. The announcement of the deal coincides with the launch of the CiiNOW platform, which offers publishers scalable hardware and software solutions for game streaming with "ultra-low" latency on multiple platforms.
In announcing the deal, AMD corporate VP of heterogeneous applications and develpoer solutions Manju Hegde said CiiNOW and AMD share the same vision for cloud gaming's future, adding, "AMD's investment signifies our mutual drive to liberate gamers from today's constraints and move us to the next era of digital content."

Wing Commander, Privateer and Freelancer creator Chris Roberts has announced a new game after nearly ten years away from the videogame industry.
Roberts' new game is currently called Cloud Imperium, and has been in development for just under a year and will be officially revealed on October 10 this year.
"I grew up making video games," Roberts writes on the new Roberts Space Industries website. "I sold my first game at the age of 13 and created Wing Commander when I was 21. But ten years ago, at the height of my career I took a break.
"Not because I stopped loving or playing games but because I had become frustrated with the limits of the technology at the time to realize my vision."

A few days ago I noticed some weird artifacts covering the screenshots I captured using the WoW game client application. I sharpened the images and found a repeating pattern secretly embedded inside. I posted this information on the OwnedCore forum and after an amazing three-day cooperation marathon, we managed to prove that all our WoW screenshots, since at least 2008,contain a custom watermark. This watermark includes our user IDs, the time the screenshot was captured and the IP address of the server we were on at the time. It can be used to track down activities which are against Blizzard's Terms of Service, like hacking the game or running a private server. The users were never notified by the ToS that this watermarking was going on so, for four years now, we have all been publicly sharing our account and realm information for hackers to decode and exploit. You can find more information on how to access the watermark in the aforementioned forum post which is still quite active

If you’re a brooding author putting the finishing touches on the next Great American Novel™ while sipping a latte in Starbucks, a MacBook is far too common to impress uncultured proles guzzling caramel macchiatos. No, to impress the next [Joyce] or [T. S. Eliot] sitting at the table next to you, you’ll need something much more hip, like a kit to turn a typewriter into a USB keyboard. This kit to turn an old Underwood into a USB keyboard comes from the drawing board of [Jack Zylkin], member of Philly hackerspace Hive 76. [Jack] managed to make the process of turning an old typewriter into a keyboard a relatively painless process.[Jack] created a sensor board loaded up with 74HC595 shift registers that easily mounts to the frame of just about any typewriter. When a key on the typewriter is struck, the mechanical levers strike metal strips soldered to the sensor board. An ATMega microcontroller records these keypresses and sends them over a USB port just like any other USB keyboard.Modifying a typewriter into a USB keyboard is one of those projects we’d dread; you’d think there would be far too much futzing about with a lot of small electrical contacts and dirty mechanical devices. [Jack] actually managed to put together a very nice kit to turn a typewriter into a keyboard here. You can pick up a kit over at [Jack]‘s etsy store, but doing the same thing with a bit of perf board isn’t out of the question. Awesome video after the break.

HP has launched a new desktop PC under its high-end Spectre brand, and all-in-one device that features near-field communications and an ultra-thin 11.5mm profile.
However, despite utilising the Windows 8 operating system, the Spectre One does not feature any touch capability nor does it carry an optical drive, due to the space constraints imposed by having such a thin profile.
Nonetheless, Engadget reports that it does have USB 3.0 connectivity, HMDI capabilities, integrated Beats audio and a memory card reader as well as optional discrete graphics and SSD.
For those users aching for touchscreen capabilities, however, HP also launched the slightly cheaper Envy 20 and 23, which have 20 and 23-inch screens respectively.

Microsoft is to open 32 stores across the US and Canada in time for the holiday season, prompting the question of what will be the big sell - Windows 8 or the new Microsoft Surface?
The firm hasn't been too precise with its info - stores are going to start opening in 'fall'. As both Windows 8 and the Surface are due to arrive on October 26th, late October or early November look likely.
Whether the stores are purely for the Christmas season or planned to become permanent shops is as yet unknown, but Microsoft has let it slip before that it would like to have 75 stores in place by 2014.
Microsoft is already advertising the jobs here - fancy being a Technical Advisor or Product Advisor? Note you will be expected to maintain an 'elite' knowledge of MS products.
If these pop-up stores prove to be successful, it seems likely that we might see similar shops in the UK soon. Microsoft will no doubt hope to develop destination stores as Apple has successfully done before it - whether it can succeed or not will be interesting to see.

Microsoft's upcoming launch of Windows 8 has been given a boost with the announcement of a deal which will bring cloud streaming of games to devices running the new version of its operating system.
The company is collaborating with Agawi, a Californian company whose cloud gaming platform has attracted significant funding from investors and currently has more than three million users.
In In a press release, Agawi says the deal will be used to deliver all kinds of games, from social Facebook games to "popular triple-A" releases, over Microsoft's cloud platform, Windows Azure. The firm moves to assure developers that no extra work is required to get their games up and running, inviting those interested to request inclusion in Agawi's developer programme.
Microsoft VP Walid Abu-Habda said: "Game developers want to focus on building great games, not worrying about backend issues like scalability and platform management. With Windows Azure, Agawi enables developers to make high-performance games easily accessible across devices with high-quality graphics and virtually instant game downloads.
"For gamers, Windows 8 delivers a fast, fluid and no-compromise experience that opens the door to exciting new form factors."
It might not be as eye-catching as Sony's $380 million acquisition of Gaikai, but while what Sony intends to do with David Perry's cloud platform remains shrouded in secrecy, Microsoft's intentions here are clear: giving the common perception of Windows 8 a much-needed boost among gamers of all tastes.
With Microsoft's operating system spreading its wings even further with the release of Windows 8 - from PC and mobile to tablets and, it's claimed, the Xbox 360 successor - cloud streaming of games to all compatible devices certainly casts the much-criticised OS in a better light. Whether it will be enough to persuade Valve boss Gabe Newell that it isn't, in fact, a "catastrophe" remains to be seen.

September 11th, 2012, 11:24 Posted By: wraggster
The latest innovation from publisher and games streaming firm Steam is Big Picture Mode, which makes it easier for gamers to access the service through televisions.
A PC or Mac still need to be connected of course, through a HDMI cable for example, but then users can simply press a button to get a new full-screen user interface that's been optimised specially for TV.
Interestingly, it's also been designed to work with a traditional game controller/joypad, as well as keyboard and mouse. Effectively, it helps turn a PC into a console.
They can access the complete Steam store from there, the community and of course their full library of games, as well as cloud files, Steam Workshop content, account information and preferences.
They can go on the web, with a new browser that works with TVs and game controllers.
What does this mean for the industry? It could signal an increase in small form factor, discreet PCs, as these tend to fit in with TV stands rather better than a giant tower. The challenge then is ensuring gamers still have high enough specs to play the games they want.
It could also pave the way for Steam to manufacture its own PC - a Steambox, some time in the near future. The firm has in the past shown off pictures on Twitter of some kind of hardware, which looked rather like a modified Zotac Zbox to us.
"Sega's roots are in living-room gaming." said John Clark, Vice President of Digital Distribution at Sega. "For the first time since the advent of PC games decades ago, gamers are finally going to have access to the kind of entertainment experience we've always wished they could have with our PC titles - one that's incredibly social, comfortable, and accessible. We're excited about the opportunity, and Big Picture has inspired us to bring even more of our titles to Steam in the future."
"There is nothing more satisfying than slaying thousands of orcs on your big screen. And many of the most die-hard players of Orcs Must Die 2 have always preferred playing with a game controller. Steam Big Picture Mode finally marries these two and delivers a true living room entertainment experience to players."
"We're pleased that gamers on Steam will now be able to immerse themselves in our entertainment experiences in the comfort of their living room on large screen TVs," said Steve Glickstein of Take-Two Interactive Software. "From action and adventure to sports and sims, our titles deliver big fun on big screens."
"PC gaming continues to be the leading edge of entertainment, whether it's social gaming, MMOs, graphics hardware, free-to-play, or competitive gaming," said Gabe Newell, president of Valve. "With Big Picture for Steam, we are trying to do our part to give customers and developers what they want - their games, everywhere, optimized for the environment in which they are playing."

The beta for Steam Big Picture Mode will be available today, giving testers a sneak peek at a living room and controller-friendly version of Valve's PC gaming platform.
Once downloaded, users will be able to switch to an interface catered towards televisions. Text, icons and menus have all been redesigned for comfortable viewing from the couch and interactions are streamlined for controllers over keyboard and mouse. In terms of functionality the Big Picture Mode is on par with its desktop equivalent, offering the same buying, chatting and browsing experience as you would get on the PC.
Steam's Big Picture mode also includes a redesigned keyboard, which requires users to navigate to petals using the left thumbstick and then press a button for the assigned letter. The alternative design also includes a tweaked web browser and support for multi-tasking.
Although Big Picture Mode can be used on a PC monitor, it isn't as elegant and is unlikely to be a good alternative to the standard Steam interface.
According to Valve's Greg Coomer the majority of gaming takes place in the living room, and users want an experience that is designed around this.
"We're confident in some things that customers want," he told Kotaku.
"They want a full-screen experience. They want to be in the living room. They want to use a game controller. They wanna have a social gaming experience. And we have this platform that lets us ship a significant portion of that experience."
It has been speculated that Valve's long-rumoured, oft-denied Steam console will support Big Picture Mode. On the subject, Coomer said the company is planning to monitor how Big Picture is used and consider hardware production if it "really makes sense"."What we really want is to ship [Big Picture mode] and then learn," Coomer said. "So we want to find out what people value about that. How they make use of it. When they make use of it. Whether it's even a good idea for the broadest set of customers or not. And then decide what to do next.
"So it could be that the thing that really makes sense is to build the box that you're describing. But we really don't have a road map. And we think we're going to learn a tremendous amount through this first release."

Command and Conquer: Generals 2 includes single-player, in response to fan feedback. Originally intended as a retail game, EA last month revealedGenerals 2 is now the first 'universe' to be included in the 'Command and Conquer' free-to-play service. Shortly after, developer BioWare Victory saidGenerals 2 didn't include a single-player campaign, but today EA president Frank Gibeau told Polygon otherwise.
"Our intention with Command & Conquer is to create a triple-A experience, and by that I mean we're using Frostbite tech, we're using very high-end graphics," Gibeau said, "Does that mean it's not going to have single-player? No, that's something we've obviously heard loud and clear that is important to people. The beauty of free-to-play, is that we can adjust and adapt to what we're hearing as opposed to, 'I'm sorry, it's two months from ship and it is what it is.' It's a very different model because you don't have to build as much. You build in response to your audience."
Command and Conquer is set to launch next year, with EA planning to incorporate universes from the Tiberium and Red Alert lines.

The developers of The War Z have revealed a key gameplay feature for its upcoming ‘Not DayZ’ survival horror title.
The War Z will, like its close rival DayZ, rob players of all of their progress when they die. But it also plans to go a stage further, thanks to the planned introduction of a real-money item shop, which as of yet has not been introduced to DayZ.
“Yes, you’ll lose what you have in your backpack when you die – both in Normal and Hardcore modes,” Hammerpoint Interactive PR rep Alex Josef told GamingBlend.
“And yes, if you bought something using real money, you’ll lose that item as well. This is a price you’ll have to pay.
“We’ve discussed that a lot and at the end decided that this will provide a pretty good incentive for players to either be extra cautious while playing, or just not spend too much money in the game and, instead, try to procure all items by finding them in the game world.”
It’s interesting to see how this apparent conflict works out. On the one hand, the developers seem to be encouraging players to work for their rewards rather than simply buy their way out of trouble.
But on the other hand, a real-money shop will be a moneymaking exercise for the studio. Does it honestly want to discourage sales? Time will tell.

Zynga has partnered with MMO icon Richard Garriott for the launch of his studio’s new social game Ultimate Collector.
The title is already available on Facebook in the form of a Limited Beta. It is developed by Portalarium, the studio founded by Ultima Online Tabula Rasa creator Richard Garriott.
The game will be made available to the userbase of Zynga’s own publishing portal Zynga Network, which the firm claims has a user base of some 306m players.
“Ultimate Collector is really three games in one,” Garriott explains. “It’s a collecting game where players go on a major hunt for collectibles ranging from toys, gadgets, historical weapons, novelties and famous art and display those collections in their homes.
“It’s a shopping game where players can visit shops and stores in our game, some of them from national retailers, to purchase items and add to their collections. And it’s a world building game that allows players to outfit a home, show off their collections to their friends, sell virtual items to other collectors and make in-game money to upgrade their house and grow it even larger.
“It’s a hybrid — a unique style of social gaming that appeals to all ages, both males and females. With extensive questing and role-playing elements, it is testing very popular with those newer to social gaming but looking for a deeper play experience, as well as those who consider themselves veteran gamers but have been waiting on the sidelines for a more immersive play experience. Ultimate Collector really appeals to that rapidly growing mid-core gaming audience.”

Love, Eskil Steenberg's beautiful, ideological co-op game, is now free to download.
The game, which Steenberg has been working on alone, without funding, for five years, has been made free because its creator, simply put, wants as many people as possible to experience it.
"I have tried to make the game of my dreams and to push the envelope of what a game can be in every area," he writes on the Quel Solaar site. "After countless iterations, innovations and experiments I think I have created something special. Love has become a game unlike any other.
"Now I really think you should play it. So much that I'm making the game free."
Back in 2009 we described Love as "It’s a deeply iconoclastic mix of action game, building game, and adventure, all set in a world run by Steenberg himself" and "one of the most interesting games currently in development." Find out for yourself by downloading it for free here, and keep an eye on Edge Online for more on Lovelater today.

Super Hexagon, Terry Cavanagh's marvellous but punishing iOS game, was downloaded around 10,000 times in its first three days on sale.
The news was revealed by Cavanagh in an Ask Me Anything on Reddit over the weekend. Cavanagh, the man behind VVVVVV andDon’t Look Back, admits he did not expect Super Hexagon to be so popular.
"It's sold about 10,000 copies in three days, and has been in the top 25 on the iPhone charts," he wrote. "I didn't see that coming at all - I'd really gone into this expecting the game to be a super niche thing that only a tiny handful of iPhone gamers would be interested in, and I'm really glad to be proven wrong."
Cavanagh also revealed that he intends to port Super Hexagon to Android, PC and Mac, and that "a friend of mine has a Blackberry Playbook, so I might give that a shot too for the hell of it." Cavanagh said the possibility of a Vita version using the cross-platform PlayStation Mobile SDK was "cool", but that someone else would have to port it for him. "I wanna spend my limited time making stuff," he wrote, "not working on ports of existing stuff.
It's a richly deserved start for a fantastic game. Our Super Hexagonreview praised its combination of "zen-like design purity with the highest order of twitch-reflex athleticism," calling it "Terry Cavanagh's masterpiece."

way2trivial writes with this snippet from Information Week about a warning from Microsoft reminding Windows administrators that an update scheduled for October 9th will require a higher standard for digital certificates."That warning comes as Microsoft prepares to release an automatic security update for Windows on Oct. 9, 2012, that will make longer key lengths mandatory for all digital certificates that touch Windows systems. ... Internet Explorer won't be able to access any website secured using an RSA digital certificate with a key length of less than 1,024 bits. ActiveX controls might be blocked, users might not be able to install applications, and Outlook 2010 won't be able to encrypt or digitally sign emails, or communicate with an Exchange server for SSL/TLS communications."

Valve boss concerned Windows 8 will undermine Steam
Copying Apple with Windows 8 will accelerate Microsoft’s decline, Valve CEO Gabe Newell has said.
Speaking to the New York Times, Newell said he understood that Microsoft was facing a big challenge from Apple in the computing space, but it should not resort to trying to emulate its success by moving away from its own ideals.
“We would say to Microsoft, we understand all these frustrations about the challenges to your business,” he said.
“But trying to copy Apple will accelerate, not slow, Microsoft’s decline.”
Newell expressed his concerns about the potential closed nature of Windows 8, which he has previously called a “catastrophe for everyone in the PC space”.

ArenaNet tells players to use a unique log-in to improve safety
Hackers have compromised more than 11,000 accounts on Guild Wars 2.
Developer ArenaNet has said it was aware of the problems having received messages of a number of accounts being accessed from a new location or computer.
More than 8,500 users had complained about being hacked over the weekend of September 1st and 2nd.
The studio said most of the 11,000 users who fell victim to hacker attacks had now gained back control of their account.
ArenaNet deflected the blame away from itself however and suggested that compromised accounts consisted of those with a similar username and password that players had used on other websites.

Bill Moggridge , the British-born designer credited with creating the original laptops, has died.
According to CNet, Moggridge died of cancer at the age of 69 in San Francisco where he had been serving as the director of the Smithsonian Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum.
In 1969, Moggridge founded the now global design firm, Ideo, and in 1979 he created the Grid Compass, an $8,000 PC for use by the US military. Its design was considered revolutionary due to the screen which folded down over the keyboard – and is often considered the first modern laptop.
“Beloved by the museum staff and the design community at large, Bill touched the lives of so many through his wise council, boundary-pushing ideas and cheerful camaraderie,” said the associate director of the Smithsonian Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, Caroline Baumann.
