265,839 users in first full month for UK gaming site
PCGamesN, launched last month by Future veterans James Binns and Tim Edwards, will launch 10 new channels in the next month.
It celebrated its first full month since launch by revealing stats for that period, including 265,839 unique users, 1,690 friends on Facebook and 18,812 Twitter followers. The editorial team produced 350 stories, while 443 articles were contributed by the community.
"The audience has accelerated faster than we could have hoped for. We're proud of the reach, it's down to both the content and the platform," said Binns, MD of Network N Ltd, the platform for PCGamesN.
Jeremy Peel and Julian Benson will join the five strong team as new writers, working on channels for games like Guild Wars, Minecraft and League Of Legends.

Your back may be straining from the textbooks, laptop, gym gear and lunch in that dangling overstuffed messenger, but you're still gonna want to save room for one more item -- a tablet. After all, while you can surf, tweet, play games and watch video from your other devices, there's nothing like doing it from a simple glass window that sits in the palm of your hand. As the hardware gets more powerful, these devices are rapidly becoming versatile enough to let you justify leaving the laptop at home on less-intensive days, so why not check out our picks of the finest devices you should be using and abusing before, during and after class.
[h=2]Entry-level[/h]
|
[h=4]Google Nexus 7[/h]If you're wedded to your Nook or Kindle Fire, sorry -- Google and ASUS' tablet is putting both on the endangered list. Solid build quality, a comfortable form factor and Jelly Bean's refinements make this the best 7-inch Android device on the market. You'll be buying this for those moments after a long day at school, kicking back to read your textbook in front of the TV followed by some Angry Birds before bed. The rumors are that Google is selling this device at a loss, and that reason alone should convince you that you're getting a bargain, but the $25 Play voucher's a good incentive, too.
Key specs: Android Jelly Bean, $199 price tag, Google Now.
Price: $199 from Google |
[h=5]You might also like...[/h] |
|
|
Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0
Samsung's budget tablet combines decent battery life, good build quality and reasonable performance at a low price. It's also equipped with an infrared blaster that lets you change channels on the TV without reaching for the remote -- great when you're riffing about what you're watching on Twitter.
Price: $249 from Amazon |
|
Amazon Kindle Fire
Last year's king of the budget hill is a portable window into Amazon's storefront. It's perfect for consuming any electronic content you can buy. Decent battery life, reasonable browsing and a low price mean it'll provide a good alternative if you don't fancy Google's latest slate.
$199 from Amazon |
[h=2]Mid-range[/h]
|
[h=4]ASUS Transformer Pad TF300[/h]While ASUS' Transformer Pad TF300 is the budget version of its Transformer Prime, it hasn't made that many sacrifices. In fact, if you're on the market for something to take quick notes in class, then the TF300 should certainly be in your sights. The keyboard dock is an optional add-on, but gives you a physical input device that should get you through some short assignments without issues. Powerful internals and eight hours of battery life mean that it'll last you all day without any hassle and will be equally adept at handling the latest and greatest Android gaming titles for blowing out those stresses from the day.
Key specs: Tegra 3, Keyboard dock, Great battery life.
Price: $384 on Amazon |
[h=5]You might also like...[/h] |
|
|
Apple iPad 2
It screams volumes that last year's heavyweight can still match this year's units pound-for-pound, but that's the iPad all over. If you aren't worried about the souped-up camera or display, you can save yourself a heap of cash and plump for the budget model -- it works just the same.
Price: $399 from Apple |
|
Acer Iconia Tab A200
Acer wisely kept its Ice Cream Sandwich tinkering to a minimum, offering a solid slice of hardware that's neither shockingly quick or offensively slow. On the upside, the hardware feels like it could take a pounding; useful if it'll be fighting for space alongside your textbooks in your backpack.
Price: $270 from Amazon |
[h=2]Money's no object[/h] |
[h=4]Apple iPad (2012)[/h]Yeah, it's still here. Let's face it -- nobody does it better, and you're certainly not going to find a better device at the same price. If you have $500 to spend on a device that'll work hard and play harder, then it has to be the iPad, no contest. The Retina display is simply amazing, the 5-megapixel camera could replace your point-and-shoot (we've seen it happen already) and there's an unparalleled selection of educational apps to help you get through whatever class you're taking. Throw in Apple's content partnerships with the biggest textbook makers and you really don't have any excuse not to buy one.
Key specs: Retina display, 5-megapixel camera, 42.5 watt-hour battery.
Price: $499 at Apple |
[h=5]You might also like...[/h] |
|
|
Toshiba Excite 13
If you're looking for a tablet with more real estate than most, then Toshiba's Excite with a 13-inch display is for you. Of course, it weighs 2.2 pounds and you'll have to carry it with you to class, but that's a small price to pay, right?
Price: $650 at Amazon |
|
ASUS Transformer Pad Infinity
ASUS' new flagship demands more of your wallet, but if you want to get the best Transformer experience available, then this is the device to snap up. A better camera, longer battery life and updated GPS support round out this device, likely to win the hearts of many.
Price: $499 from Amazon |

Were you among those who jumped for joy when Windows Explorergot its new moniker? Good news, nomenclature fans, for Redmond has decided to label its new OS' built-in games and titles obtained from the Windows Store as "Xbox Windows." Along with the new branding, venerable Windows titles like Minesweeper, Solitaire and Mahjong will also offer Xbox Achievements, so you can bulk up your Gamerscore while wasting time at work. Just as you've cozied up with "Tahiti" and "Cape Verde," AMD has returned to grow its "Southern Islands" family of graphics cards with four fresh FirePros, offering up to four teraflops of graphics computing power. That spec can be found in the company's new W9000, which is capable of four TFLOPs single precision and one TFLOP double precision with a price tag just shy of $4,000. That behemoth of a card offers 6GB of GDDR5 RAM and requires 274 watts of power. More humble members of the fam include the W8000, which has the same form-factor as the higher-end W9000, but eases back on the specs, consuming 189 watts of power and carrying a $1,599 price tag.
We had a chance to take a closer look at both cards at SIGGRAPH, and while they packed a significant amount of heft, you'll likely never take a second look once they're buried away in your tower rig. Fans of smaller housings (and price tags) may take notice of the W7000 and W5000, which are both considerably more compact and require less power to boot, with pricing set at $899 and $599, respectively. Those cards were also on hand for our demo, and can be seen along with the top two configs in our gallery below. You can also sneak a closer peek in the hands-on video after the break, and glance at the full specs over at our news post from earlier today.

We had a fun time trying Sony's SOEmote expression capture tech at E3; now everyone can try it. As of today, most EverQuest II players with a webcam can map their facial behavior to their virtual personas while they play, whether it's to catch the nuances of conversation or drive home an exaggerated game face. Voice masking also lets RPG fans stay as much in (or out of) character as they'd like. About the only question left for those willing to brave the uncanny valley is when other games will get the SOEmote treatment. Catch our video look after the break if you need a refresher.

Blizzard’s inclusion of the Real Money Auction House in Diablo III may have been controversial, but for one gamer it has proved extremely lucrative.
PCGamesN reports that Reddit user WishboneTheDog has made a total of $10,000 by selling virtual items either found or crafted in-game and then sold via the purpose-made digital shopfront.
He has supported his claim with PayPal and Diablo III screenshots. He also claims to have achieved the feat without the help of mods or exploits.
The user goes on to say that the Diablo III game economy is slowing down, primarily due to the fact that the game has no item sink (as in, all loot drops remain permanent within the game’s ecosystem) so supply is constantly inflating.
This could all change, however, when Blizzard finally introduces its long-awaited PvP (player versus player) functionality that will undoubtedly inspire an arms race amongst dedicated players.

The first videos of the long-awaited Black Mesa, a Source-poweredHalf-Life update, have surfaced online.
Both are taken from old builds of the game and show portions of the On A Rail and Surface Tension chapters from the game. While the latter video is near unwatchable, the former - while dark - offers a tantalising glimpse of the refreshed Valve classic.
One addition that's sparked some controversy on the Black Mesa Facebook page, however, is the ability to use iron sights with the Magnum - though this looks to be the multiplayer zoom function brought across to the singleplayer game.

Acer has said that Microsoft's plans to launch its own tablet PC would be "negative for the world ecosystem."
The Surface device is the company's attempt to compete with both Apple and Android, who currently dominate the mobile device market.
However, this is not the only competition the Surface will face, as it will also compete with devices from Microsoft's own partners - such as Acer.
Microsoft rubbed more salt into the wound by informing its partners of the plans surrounding the Surface just before its official announcement back in June.
Acer CEO JT Wang told the Financial Times: "It will create a huge negative impact for the ecosystem and other brands may take a negative reaction."
He continued to fire back at Microsoft, stating: "It is not something you are good at so please think twice."
Wang also suggested that if the software giant does continue with the Surface, Acer may look for a replacement partner.
"If Microsoft is going to do hardware business, what should we do? Should we still rely on Microsoft, or should we find other alternatives?" Wang said.
It is hardly surprising that the company's partners are reacting negatively to the Surface, after all, they're looking to compete with their own manufacturing partners.

But sales patter is least likely to influence a consumer's decision.
Market analyst comScore scored factors out of ten and found 7.7 consumers choose tablets based on the apps available, with tablet price securing the same amount.
Meanwhile, the tablet brand and OS scored 7.5 each, with video and music capabilities at 7.4. Retail salesperson recommendations are the least important factor, with just 5.3.
There's a 50/50 split for total tablet ownership between males and females, but 52.9 per cent of males favour the iPad ahead of women, while 56 per cent of women own a Kindle Fire.
Those aged 25-34 are most likely to own a tablet with an averages of 24.2 per cent, compared to 13-27 year olds with 5.5 per cent ownership.
Unsurprisingly, 38.4 per cent of those bringing home more than $100k will have a tablet, compared to 7.8 per cent that earn under $25,000.

If you were hoping that you could force Windows 8 to bypass the don't-call-it-Metro homescreen and boot straight to the familiar desktop you've come to know and love, we've got bad news. Word on the street is, Microsoft has removed this ability from the latest builds of the OS -- so you're gonna have to stare at a pile of tiles when you boot up, whether you like it or not. According to Rafael Rivera, one of the authors of Windows 8 Secrets, there is a work around that involves creating a shortcut to the desktop and scheduling it to run at boot. But, it appears that even enterprise customers will be blocked from making the standard desktop the default environment. While Redmond is no doubt implementing such a policy to enforce consistency, it could prove to be a source of frustration for big businesses, which are notoriously resistant to change. We'll just have to wait for the final release to find out for sure.

Google's Senior Vice President of Chrome & Apps Sundar Pichai confirmed to the crowd back at D10that Chrome browser use was soaring -- particularly in the consumer space -- and StatCounter's latestdata most definitely backs that up. The newest report, ending July 2012, shows the Chrome creeping up to 33.8 percent worldwide from 32.8 percent in June. Internet Explorer is sitting at 32 percent, while Firefox is seen slipping a bit to 23.7 percent; meanwhile, Apple's Safari picks up the Participation Award with 7.1 percent. As The Next Web points out, it's also worth nothing that Chrome is doing particularly well in Europe, South America and Asia, while IE is still charging in the UK, US and Down Under. Granted, StatCounter is hardly the end-all when it comes to browser usage; that said, it's definitely useful to get a general idea of which browsers are moving in which direction, and it's certainly astonishing to see a piece of software that didn't exist four years ago already claiming such a significant piece of the pie.

Valve's movie-making tool Source Filmmaker contains references to Source 2, seemingly a next-gen engine in development at the company.
Over 60 references to Source 2 were uncovered by Valvetime in the Source Filmmaker script files. One reads: "Return an str with the current engine version. If key doesn't exist, assume 'Source', otherwise invalid - assume next-gen 'Source 2'."
There are references to Source, Source 2, and Hybrid, which Valvetime posits is the Source 2 codebase. It believes Source 2 and Filmmaker were in development at the same time, which is why the latter contains so many references to the former.
Valve itself appears to be fanning the flames, with the description of the engine on the company's website reading: "Source is considered the most flexible, comprehensive, and powerful game development environment out there. And it's about to get even better."
And, with recent history in mind, it's hard to see this as anything other than a deliberate move from Valve to let the world know what it's working on. It's more secretive than most, of course, but so far this year the company has been opening up a little, albeit unofficially. There was the "leaked" Valve employee handbook, theMichael Abrash "wearable computing" blog post, and Gabe Newell's two-hour interview with a little-known podcast team.
Newell and company surely knew that, following the release of Source Filmmaker, the first order of business for its community would be mining the code for hints at what Valve is working on. It'd certainly be a very Valve way of announcing something - it famously revealed Portal 2 through updates to the original game, with a subsequent ARG, The Potato Sack, resulting in the game being unlocked on Steam hours before its intended launch.

Samsung has today launched its latest addition to the Galaxy Note range.
The Galaxy Note 10.1 features a 10.1-inch display screen, a 1.4 GHz quad-core processor and 2GB RAM.
Samsung boasts that its new tablet has the functionality and precision of a pen and paper, and will inspire a ‘culture of active content creation’.
The Galaxy Note 10.1 includes a new Multiscreen feature, allowing two different applications to be used side-by-side simultaneously, something that currently isn’t possible with the tablet of all tablets – iPad.
The idea Samsung are trying to put across with this new feature is that web pages and videos can be viewed on one half of the screen, and at the same time the other half can be used for writing or sketching ideas.
And how are you supposed to write out all your incredibly important ideas? Well, Samsung has added a 6.5mm S Pen, which has been designed for an ‘optimal experience’ i.e. it will feel like a real pen.
Embedded directly in the device, when removed the tablet automatically launches specially optimised applications, such as S Note, S Planner, Crayon Physics, Adobe Photoshop Touch, and Polaris Office. Fortunately, users can set their preferred app to be launched instantly, rather than wasting time closing the ones they don’t want to use.
Other specs include:
- Android 4.0 OS
- 5mp rear camera
- 1.9mp front camera
- 3.5mm ear jack
- Bluetooth 4.0
- USB 2.0
- 16/32/64GB user memory

As DayZ looks set to exceed to the one million user mark today, creator Dean Hall reveals a possible standalone title.
Having topped the Steam charts for the past few weeks, only being knocked off this weekend by Skyrim's Dawnguard DLC pack, ArmA II has spawned a mod that has taken the gaming world by storm.
DayZ is set in Chernarus, a 225 km2 open world post-soviet state that has been hit by a new and presently unknown infection which has wiped out most of the world's population.
Currently at 997,928 unique players, DayZ is incredibly close to the 1m mark, and with this comes news that creator Dean Hall would love it to become a standalone game.
“I want to see it become a standalone game, following the Minecraft model of a low price point, but that will only work if we say that everyone is going to pay,” Hall said. “In order for people to not feel ripped off we need to have a load of new content; so, things like base-building, tidying and cleaning up animations and add rag-doll physics as the like,” Hall told VG247 in a recent interview.
As well as unique users, the DayZ official website keeps a list of stats about the game, which includes total time played from all users, amounting to a whopping 1210 years three months and five days.

Whether its budget price DLC’s or full price Sim-extravaganza’s, everywhere you look there’s a hoard of Sims games clogging up the charts.
In the full price PC top ten alone, there was six The Sims 3 entries. A further three entries appeared in the budget price charts, and remember this is only the elite top ten, a further three budget priceSims titles appeared in the rest of the top 40.
So what is it about The Sims that PC gamers just can’t get enough of? Is it the ever expanding world in which you can live your life through or the very cleaver marketing by EA to deliver content that appeals to every kind of player?
With The Sims 3 and all its expansion packs and add-ons making up almost half of the budget and full price PC top tens, PCR would love to know what it is about the franchise that makes it one of the most popular series of all time.
Put us out of our misery and tell us in the comment section below.
Ukie Games Charts, compiled by GfK Chart-track:

Valve recently announced that it will be bringing a few of Steam's most popular games to Linux, the first of those being Left 4 Dead 2. But besides the novelty factor of running the now classic zombie simulator on penguin-emblazoned hardware, there may be another reason to try the new platform out: It'll be faster. Even now, during development, the Valve team has L4D2 running at 315 frames per second on the Linux text platform, as compared to the standard Windows speed of 270.6 FPS.
At that point, of course, the speeds are mostly arbitrary. But as Valve says, this speed shows the potential in customizing a game for the Linux operating system. This work on Linux is also benefiting the Windows teams - in working on the Linux version, Valve was able to speed up the OpenGL implementation on Windows to 303.4 FPS.
