The realisation that horror games Dead Space and Dead Space 2 are scary led to the decision to shift the focus away from scares in Dead Space 3, EA has told MCV.
Fans of the series took to the internet following the reveal of Dead Space 3 to bemoan its apparent shift from pure horror in favour of a more action-orientated approach.
But speaking to MCV, EA Games’ marketing boss Laura Miele says that the change of tone is a reaction to product research.
“We were doing research coming out of Dead Space 1 and 2 and we’re really proud of those products. We received feedback to understand how we can take the game out to even more consumers,” she stated.
“We were hearing feedback that they love the thriller game, but it was pretty scary, and the obvious next step was that they wanted to play with someone. So we introduced co-op into the game.
“The horror of Dead Space is still all there. It’s still true to its roots and no less scary, but people felt far more comfortable playing it with someone else than they did doing it on their own.
“Personally, I would rather go to scary movie with my husband rather than sit at home with the lights out watching one on my own. We’re looking for that to reach out to consumers that perhaps were not open to Dead Space 1 and 2.”

Until now the two standards bodies working on HTML5 (WHATWG and W3C ) have cooperated. An announcement by WHATWG makes it clear that this is no longer true. WHATWG is going to work on a living standard for HTML which will continue to evolve as more technologies are added. WC3 is going the traditional and much more time consuming route of creating a traditional standard which WHATWG refers to as a 'snapshot' of their living standard. Of course now being free of WC3's slower methods WHATWG can accelerate the pace of introducing new technologies to HTML5. Whatever happens, the future has just become more complicated — now you have to ask yourself 'Which HTML5?'

Microsoft has apologized and promised to rectify the fact that one of its developers slipped a sexist phrase into Linux kernel code supporting Microsoft's HyperV virtualization environment. In that code, the magic constant passed through to the hypervisor reads '0xB16B00B5,' or a slightly camouflaged 'BIG BOOBS.' After Linux developer/blogger Matthew Garrett criticized Microsoft for the stunt, the predictable debate over sexism in the technology world ensued. Microsoft issued a statement to Network World apologizing and added, 'We have submitted a patch to fix this issue and the change will be published in a future release of the kernel.'"

MMO attracts players from players form 150 countries clocking up in excess of 443bn minutes in game time
Jagex’s hugely popular MMO RuneScape has just surpassed more than 200 million registered users.
As well as hitting the impressive milestone, the RPG title has attracted users from more than 150 countries around the world, clocking up in excess of 443 billion minutes of game time.
“Although RuneScape has achieved so much over the past decade, smashing 200 million accounts is a huge accomplishment for the dedicated development team and is thanks to our awesome community,” said Jagex CEO Mark Gerhard.
“When the game was first released, nobody could ever have expected it would reach such high levels of popularity largely by community word of mouth. It has been an incredible journey to get to where we are today, and by continuing our tradition of constantly innovating, evolving and lovingly crafting RuneScape we are certain to continue to break records by creating an online adventure like no other.
“We’ve witnessed a really strong resurgence in the game’s popularity over the past two years and are seeing strong player growth year-on-year.”

Mozilla's latest version of Firefox supports encrypted searching.
The update fixes a privacy-related vulnerability in Firefox 13 that allowed the software's 'new tab' feature to take snapshots of supposedly secure HTTPS sessions.
The feature revealed information such as online bank details and private messages in webmail sessions to the next users of a shared PC.
Firefox 14 stops the caching of sentient from sensitive websites and automatically encrypts web searches through Google. The latest version set HTTPS Google as its search default, which shields users from network snoopers and Wi-Fi hackers.
Mozilla has also ditched the favicon in the URL bar for secure connections. Firefox now shows either a padlock icon for SSL connections or a globe icon for unencrypted connections.
The means malicious sites can no longer use a padlock as a favicon to trick users into thinking a connection is secure.
Other new features include click-to-play for plugins such as Flash, URL auto-complete for the Awesome Bar, and support for OS X Lion's full-screen mode.

Ever since Star Wars: The Old Republic was announced, it was a sure thing that we'd see the Hunter Killer assassin droids in the game, and indeed Bioware has released a teaser trailer announcing the appearance of HK-51, a few models down the line from everyone's favorite meatbag-loathing machine, HK-47.
Presumably, the droid will appear in the game as a player companion, though how he'll be unlocked for characters isn't yet apparent. The trailer mentions an ancient ice base where
"scores" of "the most dangerous machines in the galaxy" exist, so there will likely be a bit of story and questing to go through to find this model and use it.
And let us be clear: You had better go get that droid, meatbag.

After announcing that Hero Academy would soon be making its way to Steam, developer Robot Entertainment has now revealed details surrounding the PC version's special Team Fortress 2 team. One thing Hero Academy players will notice right away is that there are a lot of different units. The Team Fortress 2team has a whopping 9 units, as compared to every other team's 5.
All the Team Fortress 2 classes are represented, each with different special abilities. The Spy, for example, is a cloaked unit that can't be targeted at range. Meanwhile the Engineer can upgrade other units' weapons, the Demoman lobs area-of-effect grenades and the Sniper can target any unit in the same row. As if all that weren't enough, the team's bonus allows them to gain an extra action point every time they stomp an enemy unit (remove it from the board).
Honestly, it sounds like the team will be pretty powerful, although, in fairness, Robot hasn't announced how many of each unit will be available and the team description makes no mention of consumable items.
In other news, the PC version of Hero Academy will include a map based on "Well" from Team Fortress 2. Oh, and of course purchasing other heroic teams will unlock cosmetic items in Team Fortress 2. See some new screens in the gallery below and check out the full team description after the break.

HP's plans to open-source webOS included mention of Enyo 2.0, a framework designed to spread webOS' learnings to other platforms -- to spread the love around, so to speak. The code foundation, while behind schedule, has just left beta: any developer with a mind to producing web apps can now create interface elements and whole apps using the technology derived from Palm's legacy. Any reasonably modern browser will run the end result, whether it's running Android, iOS or a full-fledged desktop release. We may never recreate the exact feeling of using an HP TouchPad on our iPads and Galaxy Tabs, but we know that some of its software design heritage will carry on.

Where there's smoke, there's fire and now that the EU's caught a whiff of alleged misconduct onMicrosoft's part, it's dragging Windows 8 under the hot lights. Though MS moved swiftly earlier this week to acknowledge and remedy the technical glitch that prevented users from selecting alternate browsers on early 2011 Win7 machines, it now faces similar claims from third parties regarding its upcoming Win8 tablets. According to Reuters, the European Commission's broadening its investigation to encompass allegations that Redmond is blocking the install of rival browsers on Win RT tabletsrunning ARM chips and withholding access to full APIs. The company's yet to issue a response to this latest bout of legal drama, but when the stakes are this high, you can be sure it won't be before long.

The chip maker believes 2012 will see a wide range of Windows 8 devices
[h=3]Intel[/h]www.intel.com
At today's investors call, Intel CEO Paul Otellini announced that there will be 20 Windows 8-based tablets coming later this year, alongside a host of Intel-powered products. Intel reported second quarter revenue of $13.5 billion (£8.6 billion) with a recorded profit of $2.8 million (£1.8 billion), down from $3 billion (£1.92 billion) last year. Intel expects the third quarter to be sluggish as users hold off on PC purchases until Windows 8's release, with floodgates opening in October.
"Ultrabooks continue to build momentum, and achieved our volume goals in the first half. We are very pleased with the level of innovation and invention being brought into this category, and are now tracking over 140 Ivy Bridge-based designs in the pipeline," said Otellini according to The Verge.
"Of those, more than 40 will be touch-enabled, and a dozen will be convertibles. With visibility into this many designs, we are confident that we'll see $699 systems at retail this fall. We are also tracking more than 20 Windows 8 tablet designs based on our low-power and low-cost Clover Trail Atom SOC, in addition to a number of Core-based tablets."
It will be interesting to see how hardware manufacturers differentiate themselves in a sea of Windows 8 devices.

July 19th, 2012, 02:31 Posted By: wraggster
Diablo III players will soon have fresh limits imposed on them by developer Blizzard.
At some stage “in the near future” Blizzard will limit how many games a player can create within a specific, as of yet unspecified timeframe.
“We've further tuned and tested the conditions that trigger this limit to ensure, as much as possible, that it only affects those abusing the Diablo III game service in a way that violates the Terms of Use – for example, by using bots that create games in rapid succession,” the Blizzard forum reads.
“The use of bots not only impacts the stability of the game service, but it also has an impact on the player-driven economy. While we regularly take action against accounts for the use of unauthorized third-party programs and bots, this additional measure will help us further preserve and protect the integrity of the game and economy in between ban waves.
“Once this change goes live, we're looking for your feedback to help ensure that the limit is working as intended. If you encounter the ‘Input limit reached’ message and feel you should not have, please let us know how many games you were creating and why. This information will help us ensure the limit minimally impacts legitimate players while still protecting the game against bots.
“We'll continue to tweak the game limit as necessary, as well as continue to go after the few cheaters and botters that are out there in other ways. Our goal is to help ensure that Diablo III continues to be a fun gaming environment for all of our players, and we're looking forward to hearing your feedback on this change once it goes live.
Blizzard had previously restricted game access for those who obtained the game digitally and still restricts player access and progress for the first 72 hours.

Elder Scrolls developer says it's easier to push limitations on PC
The PC’s open format makes it the best platform for MMOs, the head of Zenimax Online Studios.
In an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Matt Firor said the PC’s “wide open” nature is what has made it the system of choice for MMO developers.
“Online game development is all about doing whatever you want, pushing limitations, and it’s just easier to do on an open platform. Someday, it may all change,” he said.
The Zenimax studio head went on to say that the reason for the disparity between MMOs on PC and console is because of the “desk vs couch argument”.
“It’s the classic desk vs couch argument, but it is blurring over time. The current-gen and previous-gen MMOs were all about using the keyboard and mouse, and sure, everyone used things like Ventrilo and other voice chat services, but that only works in a small group.

EA is preparing to update its Origin client to version 9.0, which seems designed to make the experience of using the Origin client as painless as possible.
The upcoming update decouples the friends lists into its own little window, so you can move it around or hide it. The library view can now be customized. The help menu has more options, as part of a redesigned pulldown interface.
"Many of you will also be happy to hear that we've heeded your requests and moved forward production of our in-game clock," EA notes in the announcement, answering a request we didn't realize was common.
You can get a preview of this exciting new clock and other features by opting into a beta of Origin 9.0. Even more exciting: you can then use Origin to purchase and play video games!
