Not content with the unveiling of its Chimera 4 and Erebus GT desktops, iBuyPower is turning its attention to gamers of a more mobile persuasion with the launch of its new Valkyrie line of gaming laptops. For $1,299, the base Valkyrie CZ-17 features a third-generation Intel Core i7-3610QM CPU, 8GB of RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670M GPU, 500GB 5,400 RPM hard drive, LAN E2200 module, backlit keyboard and a 17.3-inch, 1080p display. Folks who want to channel their inner Rich Uncle Pennybags can also configure the Valkyrie with more options such as an i7-3820QM processor, up to 32GB of RAM, dual HDD/SSD storage and a Blu-Ray drive. iBuyPower says the Valkyrie line is part of efforts to beef up its laptop offerings in order to compete with the likes of Dell/Alienware and ASUS. In the meantime, folks who've got Elmer Fudd's rendition of "Kill the Wabbit" stuck in their heads after reading the word "Valkyrie" can clear their minds by perusing the PR after the break.

"Psion, the company which made the first handheld computers in the 1980s, invented the PDA, and launched the once-unstoppable Symbian OS, is to be bought by Motorola Solutions for $200 million. Following a merger with Teklogix ten years ago, Psion has just been making ruggedised business devices, a business where Motorola Solutions also plays — note, this is Motorola Solutions, not the phones division Motorola Mobility, which Google recently bought."

June 19th, 2012, 16:56 Posted By: wraggster
As Microsoft announces a new tablet, technology experts offer their first impressions of the device, as well as insights into what the product could mean for Microsoft and its rivals.
The BBC has compiled a round-up of what some of them are saying.
[h=2]Dan Farber, CNET[/h]Microsoft has more than 90% market share of desktops, compared with 6% for Apple.
But in the mobile world, the roles are reversed. Microsoft is barely a blip on the mobile scene, while Apple and Google are running away with the fast-growing market. The number of mobile internet users is expected to exceed desktop internet users beginning in 2014, according to ComScore.
Microsoft got the message in introducing the Surface line of mobile devices, taking a page from Apple's total-control product strategy and its own Apple-like approach to the Xbox over the last decade.
[h=3]Melissa J Perenson, PC World[/h]Continue reading the main story [h=2]“Start Quote[/h]Microsoft's intent with the Surface tablets is to create hardware that puts the software front and centre”
End Quote Peter Bright Arstechnica
Microsoft's introduction of its Surface tablet engendered buzz like no other we've seen from Microsoft. The big question is, does it stand up to the hype? The answer, succinctly, is yes.
After the event, attendees got a brief audience with the Surface (the second Microsoft product to get that name; prior to today, "Surface" referred to Microsoft's table-top touchscreen computer experience). I saw it up-close, and in limited action, and was very impressed with what I saw.
For starters, Microsoft truly has paid close attention to the details. This tablet is one of the few with a full-sized USB port - and thank goodness for that. The Windows RT version of Surface has USB 2.0, with USB 3.0 on the Windows 8 Professional version.
[h=3]Erik Sherman CBS News[/h]The pressure is on Microsoft to deliver, for the first time, a computer under its own brand, rather than software running on another company's hardware. To that end, the software giant is promising a device that could potentially win favour among some users, although full specs aren't yet available, let alone hands-on reviews. A 10.6-inch-wide display will support widescreen HD video, although probably not at the ultra-high resolution of the iPad's Retina display.
[h=3]Dina Bass, Andy Fixmer and Cliff Edwards, Bloomberg[/h]Microsoft's entry into the tablet market also comes as challengers such as Hewlett-Packard and RIM have failed to derail Apple's dominance with their own tablets. The worldwide tablet market is estimated to reach $79bn this year, according to research firm DisplaySearch.
Microsoft is also teaming up with PC makers like Acer, Toshiba and Asustek to build tablets with Windows 8, which will be called Windows RT for versions running on ARM-based chips.
Working with partners is Microsoft's more traditional way of operating. Apple's success with the iPad may be pushing the company to seek greater control over the hardware design so it works seamlessly with the software, like Apple does.
[h=3]Peter Bright, Arstechnica[/h]Continue reading the main story [h=2]“Start Quote[/h]If there's one thing that Microsoft could learn from Apple, it is "announce and ship"”
End Quote Brad McCarty The Next Web
Microsoft's intent with the Surface tablets is to create hardware that puts the software front and centre, to provide the hardware necessary to allow Windows 8's strengths to really come to the foreground. At the launch event, however, the software took the back seat. This was all about the hardware, and with good reason.
The Surface tablets are smart, good-looking, carefully considered, well-built, slick pieces of kit and there's nothing even close on the market today. Of course, they're not on the market today either, but unless the PC OEMs inject a serious dose of quality in their build and design processes, the Surface units will stand alone when they eventually go on sale.
What makes Surface special is the attention to detail. The standard of the fit and finish of the prototypes on display was extremely high. The shell of the Surface is made of cast magnesium, with a vapor-deposited finish called VaporMg. The result is an attractive, scratch-resistant finish that's easy to grip and comfortable to hold.
[h=3]Brad McCarty, The Next Web[/h]You could say that it's a direct competitor to the iPad, and you'd be right. But you'd also be right to say that it's a competitor to the MacBook Air. This is a laptop, every bit as much as it's a tablet. The detachable keyboard cover is slick, and if it works as good as it looks, it's a no-brainer to take it with you everywhere.
So if the device is nice, and has huge potential in the market, where did Microsoft go wrong? Let's talk about it, starting with the fact that there's no availability.
If there's one thing that Microsoft could learn from Apple, it is "announce and ship". Today we saw the Surface. When can we buy it? The only thing we know is that it will be available in conjunction with the release of Windows 8: That is to say, 'not today'.
We also don't know the price. We have a range, but not even a solid one. The RT model will be priced in line with other ARM-based tablets, and the Pro version will hit the range of "Intel-based Ultrabooks". In case you've not been following along, Ultrabooks have a price range from somewhere around $500 (£320) to upwards of $1,200 (£766), depending on the model. You simply can't be that vague with a device that holds such an iconic potential.
To make matters worse, the device is either a Surface or a Surface Pro. The former being the Windows RT version (read: stripped-down, cheaper) and the latter being the Windows 8 device. Nomenclature is important - and Microsoft sorely missed the boat here.

Microsoft didn't just announce one Surface tablet today -- it's announced one for each of the main varieties of Windows. That includes the Surface for Windows 8 Pro, which is slightly larger and decidedly more Intel-based than its ARM-fueled counterpart for Windows RT. In addition to the more full-fledged OS, it packs a larger 42 W-h battery, an Ivy Bridge Core i5 processor (at least in the model on display today), USB 3.0 ports instead of 2.0, and your choice of 64GB or 128GB of storage (double the standard offerings of the RT Surface). You'll also get a higher 1080p resolution from the 10.6-inch ClearType display, but it comes wrapped in a package that's 13.5 mm thick and weighs 903 grams (compared to just 9.3 mm and 676 grams for the RT). That's apparently not big enough to disqualify it from Microsoft's new keyboard-laden covers, though, and it even gets another accessory of its own: a pen with "Palm Block." As for pricing and availability, Microsoft is only going as far to say that it will be "on par with Ultrabook-class PCs" and available about three months after the Windows 8 launch (when the RT model will be available).

Microsoft has borrowed a couple of Apple-flavored notions for the launch of its new Surface tablets. For a start, it's avoided mentioning certain tech specs -- like the amount of RAM -- and now one of our readers has noticed something else: the strange-looking power port on the new devices looks very much like the magnetic, MagSafe-style connector Microsoft sent to the US Patent Office last week. We could be wrong, but the two do seem nearly identical, in which case Surface owners -- just like new Apple buyers -- may also have to put up with the clutter of more proprietary cables.

If Microsoft's recent Surface announcement made you think about a funky LED table, that's because itwasn't long ago that a joint effort with Samsung bore that moniker instead. While Redmond appropriated the name for its new tablet, the two companies are still selling the original device -- now the Samsung SUR40 with Microsoft PixelSense -- as a business collaboration tool. Though there's no mention of price on Samsung's site, the last time we checked, the 1920 x 1080 gorilla glass device was running a mere $8,400. For that sum, it might be useful for deep pocketed institutions -- so hopefully early adopters hoping to earn some hipster cred didn't end up with buyer's remorse.

For Microsoft, the launch represents an attempt to grab a share of the market it invented.
The firm's founder Bill Gates famously enthused about the tablet form factor a decade ago. It even launched a 'tabletop' device called the Surface, but as is so often the case with Microsoft, its execution was poor and it was left to Apple to dominate the space with iPad.
Now, after months of speculation, the new Surface is here – a showcase for the forthcoming touch-based Windows 8 OS. Microsoft's CEO Steve Ballmer unveiled the device at a press conference in Milky Studios last night.
Actually, two versions were demonstrated, one running Windows RT (which uses low power processors) and another running Windows 8 (using Intel chips).
They are pretty much the same in size as iPad at 9.3mm thick and with 10.6 inch screens. The Pro Version offers up to 128GB of memory, while the RT will come with either 32GB or 64GB.

DirectX 11 support, trial Linux deployment and bolstered animation abilities spearhead new feature set
Unity has revealed version 4 of its popular eponymous games engine.
The announcement of the engine comes with details of a wealth of new features, which demonstrate a continued focus by Unity on the triple-A space, and ongoing interest in the small studios with which the tech outfit established its early success.
Unity 4 includes a significant overhaul of the entire engine, and the tools suite that underpins the platform. A new high-end character animation system named Mecanim brings Unity users one of the most high profile features, which also include DirectX 11 support, 'hypermodern' mobile graphics, and the addition of Adobe Flash and Linux as new publishing platforms.
“We’ve been working on Unity 4 for a long, long time and are happy to finally be able to unveil its imminent arrival and outline its core features that will change the industry,” said David Helgason, CEO of Unity Technologies. “The revolutionary animation system and add-on deployments to Adobe Flash and Linux are some of the critical features introduced in Unity 4, which together maintain Unity as the strongest, fastest evolving modern games development platform available.”
The Mecanim technology promises to breathe life into games characters to life, apparently delivering fluid and natural motion with a highly efficient interface. Mecanim lets Unity 4 users create state machines, blend trees, IK rigging, and practice auto retargeting of animations, all from within the Unity editor.

Could Microsoft be taking on Apple’s iPad, or perhaps the mighty Kindle?
Most of the rumours making their way around the internet about Microsoft’s mysterious announcement seem to be focused on a tablet to rival iPad. But with Microsoft and Barnes & Noble forming a ‘strategic partnership’ back in April, the rumour mill is now chugging out stories that it’s more likely to be a rival to the Kindle that’s revealed at today’s event.
The partnership saw Microsoft investing $300 million into Barnes & Noble’s digital business.
“Our complementary assets will accelerate e-reading innovation across a broad range of Windows devices, enabling people to not just read stories, but to be part of them,” Andy Lees, president at Microsoft, said in a statement released at the time.
PCR reported last week that speculation indicated that Microsoft would be revealing a tablet featuring its own Windows Store, implying that it could be planning to take on the iPad and Apple’s App Store.
Channel News Australia has reported that some Australian retailers have already been briefed on the device, which is being positioned as ‘Built for gaming’, ‘Awesome entertainment’ and ‘perfect for work’ - not much of a give-away there then.
Whatever it is that Microsoft end up announcing, PCR will be reporting on todays press event, which takes place at 11:30pm BST.

Arx Libertatis is a cross-platform, open source port of Arx Fatalis, a 2002 first-person role-playing game developed by Arkane Studios.
Quote:
Version 1.0.2 fixes various crashes, disappearing items when sorting the inventory, and minor rendering and input bugs. This release also fixes a bug that left the Spanish version with no text. See the changelog for more details.
Windows and Linux packages are available. We still don´t have Mac OS X binaries, but a user has created a Wine-based wrapper that allows the Windows version to run on Mac for those who don´t want to compile from source. We recommend switching to the OpenGL renderer when running under Wine. Arx Libertatis is also available as a FreeBSD port.
Changelog:
- Fixed problems with the unity build under Linux (crash report #243, crash report #245)
- Fixed crashes and disappearing items when sorting the inventory
- Crafting now always adds items to an existing stack if there is one
- Inventory sorting now works on all bags at once
- Fixed a script execution error when changing the heartbeat event while executing the heartbeat event
- Fixed compile errors with older Qt and SDL versions
- Fixed crashes due to random numbers, mostly occurring on Windows (crash report #258)
- Fixed a bug in loading the Spanish localization files (bug #259)
- Fixed transparent objects being drawn in front of opaque objects when a book/note is open (bug #252)
- Fixed a regression from the original game that made the player super stealthy (bug #262)
- Fixed a regression in the script timer code (crash report #251)
- Fixed label for the ´Full screen´ checkbox not being shown in the German version
- Fixed cursor position not aligning with absolute input devices (e.g. tablets) in fullscreen mode (bug #269)
- Mouse sensitivity setting now only applies to turning the camera, not to cursor movement

Linus Torvalds received the Millennium prize last week for his work on Linux operating system. He was already in Finland, so Aalto University arranged a talk session with him (video). During the Q&A, a person asks why NVIDIA does not play well with Linux. Torvalds explained shortly that NVIDIA has been one of the worst companies to work with Linux project — which makes it even worse that NVIDIA ships a high number of chips for Android devices (which use Linux inside). Torvalds even summarized that ('Nvidia, f*** you!') in a playful manner. What has been your experience on NVIDIA drivers with Linux?

Steam has a pair of deals worth checking out right now for Napoleon: Total Warand SOL: Exodus. First up, Napoleon: Total War is free to play from now until Sunday at 1PM Pacific time. If you like what you play, the game is currently half-off for $10, which is a lot of strategy for something so little -- much like Napoleon.
Also half-off today only is SOL: Exodus. The indie flight sim may not by the grandest space adventure ever digitized, but for $5 there's plenty of value in playing a genre we haven't seen much of in the last ten years.

BioWare Lead Designer Emmanuel Lusinchi has dropped a word-bomb on the Star Wars: The Old Republic community, stating that the game may be heading in the direction of free-to-play. Lusinchi said that the studio is investigating possibilities: "We are looking at free-to-play, but I can't tell you in much detail. We have to be flexible and adapt to what is going on."
This comes out of an interview in GamesTM magazine, in which Lusinchi addressed the challenges of being competitive in a largely F2P industry. WhileSWTOR has a large playerbase, it lost 400,000 subscriptions from its peak earlier this year as well as several members of its dev team.
Lusinchi says that the challenge isn't just that SWTOR is a subscription-based game but that there's a lot of great options in the field. "If it was just free-to-play games and they weren't very good it wouldn't even be a question," he said, "but there are definitely good games out there and good games coming out, so of course all of this competition impacts your plan with what you want to do."
Of course, we did hear about the limited free trial at E3, but this interview seems to indicate the possibility of a move to full F2P in SWTOR's future.
[Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]
[Update: It seems the original article at GamesTM was pulled, but you can find images of the interview here and here.]
