It looks like webOS isn't going quietly into the mobile OS retirement home. While its journey to open-source continues, an eager cabal of developers, fans and designers have decided to reignite the ill-fated operating system under the banner of Phoenix International Communications. Focusing its efforts on transporting open webOS to existing devices, both HP-made and otherwise, Phoenix also wants throw in some new features and fixes -- presumably throwing in some extra software gems and UI tweaks. If it all goes to plan, the organization even wants to bring new webOS devices to market -- a heady dream, but you've got to admire their pluck. Any webOS devotees out there can pledge their allegiance (and assistance) to the cause at the source below.

Renowned Overclocker HiCookie used a Gigabyte Z77X-UD3H motherboard to achieve a fully validated 7.03GHz clock speed on an Intel Core i7 3770K Ivy Bridge processor. As it stands, that's the highest clockspeed for an Ivy Bridge CPU, and it required a steady dose of liquid nitrogen to get there. HiCookie also broke a record for the highest memory speed on an Ivy Bridge platform, pushing his G.Skill Trident X DDR3-2800 memory kit populated in four DIMM slots to 3,280MHz. Not for the faint of heart, the record breaking CPU overclock required that HiCookie pump 1.956V to the processor, according to his CPU-Z screenshot. The CPU multiplier was set at x63."

Microsoft has announced the immediate availability of Windows 8 Release Preview. Unfortunately there isn't a Consumer Preview > Release Preview upgrade path — you'll have to format and perform a clean installation. After downloading the ISO, simply burn Windows 8 RP onto a USB stick or DVD, reboot, and follow the (exceedingly quick and easy) installer. Alternatively, if you don't want to format a partition, ExtremeTech has a guide on virtualizing Windows 8 with VirtualBox. After a lot of fluster on the Building Windows 8 blog, the Release Preview is actually surprisingly similar to the Consumer Preview. Despite being promised a new, flat, Desktop/Explorer UI, Aero is still the default theme in Windows 8 RP. The tutorial that will introduce new users to the brave new Start buttonless Windows 8 world is also missing. Major features that did make the cut are improved multi-monitor support — it's now easier to hit the hot corners on a multi-monitor setup, and Metro apps can be moved between displays — and the Metro version of IE10 now has a built-in Flash plug-in. There will be no further pre-releases of Windows 8: the next build will be the RTM

Microsoft isn't resting on its cloud with SkyDrive -- it's announcing a new update, which rolls out today for Mac and Windows. It teased a new feature for Windows 8 Release Preview -- due early June -- that allows photos to be retrieved from any PC with SkyDrive, whether your cloud storage is maxed out or not. Though we doubt you've topped out your 150,000 file limit, Redmond says it's taking power users into account with a huge bump to 10 million files -- with the same 7GB free / 100GB paid limits. It's also promised more speed and reliability, many small bug fixes, and has dropped the app icon from the OS X Lion dock -- saying it "definitely heard feedback" to do it. Updates will happen automatically, so you might be able to shoot more of those dusty files off to the cloud sooner than you think.

Most ultra-compact, fanless PCs are intended for the embedded market -- that is, not for the proletariat to tinker with directly. VIA's no stranger to serving that crowd, but it's making a point of addressing home users who want this class of PC for DIY projects, like home media servers, with the ARTiGOA1200. The new design is still using the dual-core, 1GHz Eden X2 of VIA's usual embedded PCs at its heart, but it comes wrapped in a smaller, more eye-catching package with HDMI video out and support for Windows 7. That's not to say that the A1200 represents a softening, inside or out. The PC can still survive temperatures between 32F and 113F with dust resistance in the bargain, and there's an array of ports you're still less likely to find on an everyday computer, such as a CFast slot (for storage) and dual gigabit Ethernet jacks. The $320 it costs to buy the new ARTiGO today won't get you an OS, RAM or a hard drive, but its ability to survive for years in a hot, dusty closet just might be worth the cost.

Until now, it seemed like Microsoft was gearing up to unveil the almost-final Windows 8 Release Preview in the first full week of June, just in time for what is sure to be the world's premier Ultrabook trade show. As it turned out, though, the folks in Redmond couldn't contain their jubilation any longer: the company is now rolling out the Release Preview several days ahead of schedule. The update, free to anyone who wants to try it, offers a few notable enhancements, including a trio of new apps, a "Flip ahead" browser gesture, Flash support and a couple of updated multi-monitor features. A few heavy hitters like Wikipedia and Box.net are also using the occasion to debut apps in the Windows Store. And the OS is now available in 13 languages. Mostly, though, this update brings performance and stability fixes, along with granular tweaks like being able to pin stocks to the Start screen. Certainly, a two-hour press conference was not necessary this time around.
Ready to upgrade from the Consumer Preview? Just remember that you'll need to a do a clean install, which means unless your user account is tied to a Microsoft ID you're going to lose your personal settings. Got it? Good. Get your download on now, and then meet us past the break for some early impressions and a video walk-through of the new features.

There will be new Jubilee content in the game as well, from corgis to royal souvenirs and a Jubillee golden carriage - drawn by four unicorns for that touch of realism.
The street party takes place on June 2nd in Runescape, at the royal city of Varrock.
A look at some of the snazzy Jubilee artwork you might expect to see on the day:

The UK’s very first Angry Birds theme park will open at the end of summer in Retford, Nottinghamshire.
It will open in Sundown Adventureland, and feature animal spring riders, swings, sandpits, climbing towers, slides and even a giant dummy catapult all based on Rovio’s hit mobile game.
Sundown Adventureland has placed a £250,000 order for the park with playground equipment manufacturer Lappset Group, which has teamed up with Rovio to launch the family-friendly parks worldwide.
Sundown’s park manager Paul Tomlinson said: “We were very keen to have an Angry Birds Activity Park at Sundown as the brand is so well known throughout the world. It’s currently one of the most downloaded games and appeals to all ages – something that was very important for us as although the park is designed for under 10s, we are keen to welcome families.

Polish developer CD Projekt RED, best known for The Witcher series, today announced Cyberpunk, a futuristic “triple A” sci-fi RPG based on Mike Pondsmith’s Cyberpunk pen-and-paper system.
Cyberpunk is being worked on by a second team at CD Projekt RED, headed by veterans of the two The Witcher games. Like The Witcher, Cyberpunk is said to be “richly detailed” and “non-linear”. The game is targeted at mature gamers, with the devs warning that it will be "brutal where it needs to be".
Unlike The Witcher, however, in Cyberpunk, players will be able to choose from one of many classes, and will be equipped with cybernetic implants and high tech weaponry.
No platforms or release date has yet been announce for Cyberpunk.

The UK hard drive market performed well in the first four months of the year, boosted by lowered prices and a steady recovery from the Thailand floods.
According to figures from Context, the UK HDD market grew by 78 per cent with sales of 1TB drives growing by 52 per cent, compared to just 31 per cent across the rest of Europe.
In terms of product, 500GB capacity drives are continuing to perform well but the primary mover has been the 1TB category which has seen a sales spike as prices have been reduced by 25 per cent – thought to have been spurred by a recovery in production following the Thailand floods.
In terms of companies, Seagate and Western Digital reportedly drove sales, with the two companies sharing a lead with 44 per cent market share each.
“Although average selling prices in April were still up 58% year on year, we are now seeing prices gradually on their way back down from the high November,” said Context’s enterprise analyst, Senthuran Premakumar.
“Going forward, we expect to see sales increasing further for both 1TB as well as other high capacity drives.”

Researchers at Kaspersky have issued further guidance to anyone who thinks their PC might be infected with the Flame virus.
According to a blog post made by the head of Kaspersky’s Global Research and Analysis Team, Alexander Gostev, the main warning sign of a present or past infection is the presence of a file called ~DEB93D.tmp.
Furthermore, if the registry contains files called mssecmgr.ocx or authpack.ocx then the system is currently infected.
The virus is able to download additional software components, likened to apps, to expand its capabilities and it is thought to be derived from or inspired by a piece of software called Flexible Lightweight Active Measurement Environment.
“The FLAME software is used to measure network characteristics by deploying measurement agents and collecting data in a central database. Despite some similarities, we think that this software is unrelated as it serves different objectives,” wrote Gostev.

Around 40 per cent of the accounts on Facebook and Twitter and eight per cent of messages are spam.
According to Business Week, the volume of spam on social networks has been increasing recently as the efficacy of using social networks to propagate spam has eclipsed email.
A common tactic used is that of ‘likejacking’ - a process whereby the user is encouraged to Like a page before being granted access to a video or where clicking a link also adds a Like to spam content – which is thought to have affected over 280,000 Facebook users.
The social networks are now acting to combat the spam though. Both Facebook and Twitter have initiated legal action against companies that are suspected of spam. In a case against two companies called Skootle and JL4 Web Solutions, Twitter claims that it has spend $700,000 trying to combat the spam that the defendants created.

D2X-XL v1.16.14 is released. D2X is a port of Descent 2 to OpenGL. It is an open source project and has received a lot of enhancements compared to Descent 2. My work on this project would not have been possible if hadn't been for the people who initially implemented the OpenGL and SDL code in D2X, so my thanks to them: It is for them that we can still play this great game on modern hardware. My thanks also to the many people who have provided input for this project, be it in the form of bug reports, great ideas, logos, encouragement, or other.
Descent 2 is a pretty old game, and further development has slowed down; so there are a few issues - some still stemming from the original Descent 2 - that have never been adressed or solved in D2X.
As I still like Descent 2 pretty much, I was always looking for a way to get rid of the things that plagued me most in Descent 2. Getting hold of the D2X source files and being able to create a MS Visual C++ 6 project for D2X finally enabled me to fix these annoyances.
D2X-XL Features:
- Full colored lighting, lightmaps, per pixel lighting
- Smoke, lightning, volumetric glare, gun effects (light and smoke trails, tracers, lightning bolts, dynamic shield effects, thruster flames, transparent, additively blended explosions)
- Anaglyph 3D rendering (amber/blue, red/cyan, green/magenta)
- Many multiplayer enhancements (true CTF, Entropy, Monsterball, up to 16 players, tracker support, UDP/IP connectivity)
- Massive level building enhancements (up to 20000 segments and 2000 walls, triangular segments, new segment types, new programmable trigger types, sound and effect objects, cameras, in-level teleports)
- Many gameplay enhancements (improved collision detection, improved collision physics, framerate independent weapon behavior, improved cockpit)
- High resolution textures, ship and robot models, high quality sound
- Allows full per mission modding of all game elements (models, AI, textures, sound, music)
- In-game context-based help function
- Simple automatic installation
- Sophisticated level editor (flexible interface, OpenGL renderer, 1st and 3rd person views, advanced lighting and segment editing functions)
- and much, much more

Zenimax Media, parent company of Skyrim developer Bethesda Softworks, has filed a trademark for "Hearth Fire," the latest in a stream of applications related to the game.Fusible picked up on the trademark, which is a reference to a conjuration skill book and part of the "2920" book series found in the lands of Skyrim. Feel free to read the book on the Unofficial Elder Scrolls wiki.
Other trademarks recently filed by the company include last month's "Dragonborn" and April's "FUS RO DAH." The first... yes, the first... piece of Skyrim DLC, "Dawnguard," will be detailed next week at the industry's mega E3 trade show.

It seems like yesterday that we reviewed the inaugural Samsung Series 5 Chromebook running Google's Chrome OS, an operating system for laptops based on Chrome. It was, from the start, a world in which everything from music playback to document creation happened in browser tabs. Since we last checked in a year ago, Google has addressed some early complaints -- the browser can actually stream Netflixnow! -- but it's only just getting around to ticking off some other long-standing grievances, like multitasking.
The company just announced two new Chrome OS devices -- the Samsung Chromebook Series 5 550 and Chromebox Series 3 -- and both run a spanking-new build of the OS that ushers in a simplified desktop with customizable wallpaper and the ability to minimize, maximize and close windows -- oh my! More importantly, you can now view multiple windows onscreen, edit docs offline and pin shortcuts to the bottom of the screen -- a combination that promises some seriously improved multitasking. Other goodies: built-in Google Music, Google+ and Hangouts, along with a basic photo editor, redesigned music player and enhanced remote desktop app. So does all this add up to an upgrade meaty enough to make the skeptics give Chrome OS a second look? Could it be time for you to get the low-tech person in your life a Chromebook? Let's see.

Microsoft has patented an online personal appearance adviser for those of us without a hotline straight through to Put This On's Jesse Thorn. Simply upload a pair of pictures of yourself in different hair, makeup and clothing choices and let the denizens of the internet vote on which one makes you look the best. Sounding similar to HotorNot and FaceMash, this patent purports to shift the emphasis to help the style-challenged choose a suitable wardrobe. We just hope the company built in some snark-protection -- or else we might see plenty of ingenues with ruined self esteem arrive at the opera in a dinosaur costume.

Hyderabad-based game developer/publisher Gameshastra today announced FKS Cricket Drive, a game that seemingly brings together two of India’s favourite pastimes – cricket and Bollywood.
FKS Cricket Drive is based on the Indian film Ferrari Ki Sawaari, which is set for theatrical release on June 15. The game is set for release on iOS and Android platforms, but no release date has been announced, nor has the developer released any details on how it will integrate cricket into the film’s theme.
Gameshastra is one of India’s oldest game companies, focussing on development for console, mobile and social platforms as well as on game testing and publishing.

An unspecified number of staff have been laid off at Runescapedeveloper Jagex after the Cambridge studio closed down its8Realms MMOG barely a year after it entered beta. One source claimed the game only had drawn one tenth of the users it needed to turn a profit.
According to Develop, while some staff have lost their jobs entirely, some will be found new roles within the company, which earlier this month revealed an ambitious expansion for Runescape, The Evolution Of Combat.
COO Daniel Clough admitted that 8Realms, which entered beta last May, simply wasn't popular enough, saying: "Jagex has always been committed to creating fun and compelling games.
"During the 8Realms beta it has become clear that the game doesn't meet our high expectations for success and we are therefore channelling our focus on other exciting opportunities in the pipeline."
