Just as E3 was ending last week, Major League Gaming's Spring championships were getting underway in Anaheim, California. Blizzard held a press preview during the opening hours of the tournament to show off the new units and features coming to Starcraft 2's multiplayer component in the upcoming Heart of the Swarm expansion.
Each of the three races in the game has a few new units and abilities to study (which you can see in the included trailer), and hardcore players will no doubt be combing through them as the expansion goes into beta. But Heart of the Swarm's multiplayer represents an interesting change in Blizzard's original plan for the three-part series that is Starcraft 2.
As lead producer Chris Sigaty (who doubles, by the way, as the lead guitarist for Blizzard's in-house metal band L80ETC) tells Joystiq, the new units are all about adding something to the game without removing what's there.

Looking to spend (or earn) some real-world cash in Diablo 3? Now you can, because the real-money auction house is now live. As the completely unambiguous title suggests, the real-money auction house allows players to sell their in-game items for real cash, which can be converted to Battle.net Balance credit or transferred to PayPal.
As we reported earlier this week, all players wishing to use the real-money auction house will need an authenticator attached to their Battle.net account. You can learn more about the auction house on Battle.net right here.

Kids social network Habbo (formerly Habbo Hotel) will tonight be labelled as a “paedophile haven” by a special report on Channel 4 News tonight.
Kernel reports that the show will highlight “the extent of sexually explicit material on the social network”, with one newspaper already preparing national coverage.
It’s not the first time the site has been embroiled in grooming controversies but it is most certainly the highest profile investigation yet seen on the subject.
Investors in Habbo owner Sulake are expected to turn cold on the company as a result, with the second largest shareholder Balderton Capital expected to give up its 13 per cent stake and resign from the board.
“We were given some information a week ago that profoundly shocked us,” a Balderton spokesperson stated. “We had to ask ourselves whether we were comfortable being investors in a business where children were not being adequately protected.
“We didn’t take this decision lightly, as we have been investors in Sulake for over eight years, but the standards required to run a website that children have access to are very high. We felt the company was not meeting those standards.”
In the company’s defence, a former Sulake employee speaking anonymously claimed that “responsiveness to reports of inappropriate material on Sulake’s websites has been greatly improved” since current chief executive Paul LaFontaine was appointed in September 2011.
The same source adds that “the financial position of the company and the extent of the illicit activity on its networks was not properly explained” to the exec prior to his appointment.

A new proposal from the government means victims will have the right to know the identities of people who have harassed them online.
The new powers are to be added to the Defamation Bill and will make the process of websites being forced to reveal IP addresses less time-consuming and costly.
PCR reported last week that a British woman won a court order, which forced Facebook to present the IP addresses of trolls who abused her on the social media site. The trolls left an abundant of abusive comments and messages including branding her a paedophile.
Some are now worrying that this new proposal will scare websites into removing any users’ comments as soon as there is a whiff of a complaint. The government has assured that there will be measures put in place to prevent false claims in order to get material removed.

Kuala Lumpur based E-One Studio has released details of its new PC adventure game Hoodwink.
Gamers take on the role of Michael Bezzle, described as a ‘smart-mouthed, bumbling scoundrel’. Bezzle is seeking to turn over a new leaf and settle down with his girlfriend, but instead gets mixed up in political propaganda and corruption.
“A lot of us grew up on adventure games. With an emphasis on witty dialogue and storytelling, Hoodwink is a return to the classic gaming genre,” says Amir Irwan, executive producer at E-One Studio.

TimeSplitters 4 could yet become a reality… although it won’t be a retail game.
That’s according to Crytek, which is the current owner of the studio once known as Free Radical and now working under the guise of Crytek UK.
However, the long-awaited multiplayer sequel remains nothing but a dream for now.
"Look, I wish we were working on it. I will say that," he told CVG.
"I think hopes are high, but change has to happen in the platform space. I'm very excited potentially about the idea of a TimeSplitters for [Crytek’s free-to-play gaming platform] G-Face.
"The thing with TimeSplitters is, if we made a sequel to TimeSplitters, nobody would accept this apart from some fans, and we don't know how big the fan community is unfortunately.
"And we don't want to design this as a packaged goods game that launches on a console, and even if we wanted to I don't think publishers would like the idea. That is the truth, and that was the truth even before we bought Free Radical."

Apple has revealed a new MacBook Pro notebook, with a Retina display containing over three million more pixels than an HDTV.
With a 15 inch screen boasting pixel density of 2,880 x 1,800 - or 220 pixels per inch - Apple CEO Tim Cook claims the new MacBook Pro "pushes the limits of performance and portability like no other notebook… [It's] the most advanced Mac we have ever built."
That Retina display is, of course, great news for games. Diablo IIIwill be among the first to be updated to take full advantage of the machine's resolution, with senior vice president Phil Schiller promising the audience at Apple's WWDC 2012 event in San Francisco last night "a gaming experience with this resolution that you have never seen before."
The challenge now, of course, is for other developers to follow Blizzard's lead and update their games and apps to take advantage of the new resolution. VentureBeat reports that Apple has been working directly with developers to help them do so.
The machine is more than powerful enough to run games at Retina resolution, with Intel Ivy Bridge processors - which are 60 per cent more powerful than Intel's last-gen equivalents - plus Nvidia 650M graphics chips, up to 16GB of RAM, and SSD storage.
Not is this the most powerful Mac that Apple has ever built, it arguably sets a new standard for gaming - though with prices beginning at $2,199 it's clearly something of a niche proposition.
During the event, Apple also announced that its iOS gaming network Game Center will be added to Mac OS X when the latest version, Mountain Lion, launches next month.

Bigger screens are improving the chances of monetising streams.
This is increasing the potential for direct monetisation of video. The study concluded that of those viewing video at least once during the month, one in four (26.7 per cent) paid to watch content – and 25 per cent of the users say they would pay premium prices for their content.
Just 20 per cent of smartphone users watch video on their device monthly, compared to 53 per cent of tablet users, while 10.3 per cent and 24.6 per cent watch the content as much as three times per week, respectively.
Meanwhile, 25 per cent pay premium for their tablet video viewing.
Results show consumers are becoming ever more connected, with a quarter of smartphone owners using a tablet, up 13.9 per cent year-on year, while 10.4 per cent of feature phone owners also use tablets.
Females are more likely to use tablets than men, while both genders aged between 25-34 are the most likely to use the device with 24.4 per cent, followed by 35-44 year-olds on 21.4 per cent.

It's no secret that we very much enjoy Monsters Ate My Condo. We love giant unicorns with an addiction to cosmetic surgery who used to front '80s rock bands but now work at self-esteem help lines. It's our kyrptonite. Previously exclusive to iOS platforms, PikPok's puzzle game is finally making its debut on Android. It's available right now in the Google Play Store for $.99.
And to celebrate being App of the week on the App store, Adult Swim is also offering Monsters Ate My Condo on iOS for free. This offer will only be available for a limited time, so make sure you hit up iTunes and give it a download before these giant monsters have gotten their fill of plaster and Ikea furniture.

SimCity returns next February and fans of the series have a lot to get excited about ... like, a lot a lot. Powered by a fancy new engine called Glassbox, the game uses a tilt-shift photography (miniature faking) visual style to fulfill fantasies of producing a model-like world come to life.
The E3 demo I saw was played in real time, starting with curvy roads being laid and residential zones spawning home construction. Houses were formed, followed by Sims pulling up in moving vans and residents starting new lives. There is so much detail work, delivering a lot of visual cues. Houses with electricity light up, pollution turns the world brown and crime is represented by graffiti. These visual indicators present a lot of information intuitively.
"We were really inspired by Google maps and infographics. We have so much data and we want to present it in cool and easy to understand ways," a Maxis rep told us.

Star Wars 1313 may be our first look into the next generation of games – at least the next generation according to Microsoft and Sony. LucasArts' internally-developed third-person shooter slash Uncharted-esque third-person action game is the very definition of "early" for a game in development. "We're in pre-production," said Craig Derrick, LucasArts producer, ahead of a PC-based demo.
Further pushing that point: the team isn't talking platforms just yet, nor engine, indicating to many that it could be headed to Microsoft and Sony's yet-to-be announced console successors. The demo runs on an Nvidia 680 graphics card, which I'm told is the fabled "Kepler" architecture of the next generation. And the game is gorgeous for it. Both in cutscenes and in gameplay, the graphical detail is near-equal to that of Naughty Dog's latest efforts. Again, the game is inpre-production.
Credit's due here to LucasArts' Industrial Light & Magic, as well as Skywalker Sound and LucasFilm Animation, who are assisting on the project – no doubt – but few games look anywhere near this good at this point in production.

Version 3.0 of MorphOS has been released. It's the independent PPC OS designed for outdated Apple systems like G4 PowerBooks (5,6; 5,7; 5,8; or 5,9) and eMacs (1.25 GHz/1.42 GHz) and PPC Mac Minis, and some G4 PowerMac models (depends on graphics hardware). It further runs on discontinued and niche Genesi desktop systems (Pegasos) and the stunted 128-megabyte-of-RAM tiny Efika. MorphOS is a nice-looking, low-resource, and nimble OS that can't match the capabilities of current Windows, Mac, and Linux. Its installation/live CD is free without caveat, and runs for 30 minutes at a time, as many times as you like. You may purchase MorphOS to remove the time limit. A particular weakness of MorphOS is its lack of support for wireless networking.

Crysis developer Crytek has apparently claimed that it is to become a free-to-play only studio.
Speaking to Videogamer.com, CEO Cevat Yerli said that the growing “DLC and premium services” model is “milking customers to death”.
The transition will come once the developer has completed its current contracts for traditional boxed products.
"As we were developing console games we knew, very clearly, that the future is online and free-to-play," Yerli stated.
"Right now we are in the transitional phase of our company, transitioning from packaged goods games into an entirely free-to-play experience.
"What this entails is that our future, all the new games that we're working on, as well new projects, new platforms and technologies, are designed around free-to-play and online, with the highest quality development."
Crytek’s first F2P FPS will be the previously announced Warface.

Microsoft recently extended 'It Just Works' compatibility for Visual Basic 6 applications through the full lifetime of Windows 8, so VB6 apps will have at least 24 years of supported lifetime (VB6 shipped in '98). So why has VB6, 'the un-killable cockroach' in the Windows ecosystem, managed to thrive? 'Cockroaches are successful because they're simple,' explains David S. Platt. 'They do what they need to do for their ecological niche and no more. Visual Basic 6 did what its creators intended for its market niche: enable very rapid development of limited programs by programmers of lesser experience.' But when Microsoft proudly trotted out VB.NET, the 'full-fledged language' designed to turn VB6 'bus drivers' into 'fighter pilots,' they got a surprise. 'Almost all Visual Basic 6 programmers were content with what Visual Basic 6 did,' explains Platt. 'They were happy to be bus drivers: to leave the office at 5 p.m. (or 4:30 p.m. on a really nice day) instead of working until midnight; to play with their families on weekends instead of trudging back to the office; to sleep with their spouses instead of pulling another coding all-nighter and eating cold pizza for breakfast. They didn't lament the lack of operator overloading or polymorphism in Visual Basic 6, so they didn't say much
