Xbox 360's current Games on Demand strategy, which sees full retail games offered as downloads at full price around six months after they arrive in physical stores, is successful and here to stay, so says Microsoft.Speaking in an interview with MCV, Xbox Live UK product manager Pav Bhardwaj explained that as the model currently works well, Microsoft sees no reason to follow Sony's lead of offering a simultaneous digital release on launch day."It comes down to choice," said Bhardwaj."The customer has the choice of going to retail on day one if they really want to buy a particular title, or to wait a couple of months and buy it full price from the Xbox Live marketplace."It's a successful part of our business, we're very pleased with the growth and it continues to do really well. Clearly there's an audience out there who are happy to purchase a product at full ERP six or so months after [its retail release]."We don't do Games on Demand on day one, we focus on boxed retail for day one. That's where our focus has always been and will remain that way for the foreseeable future," he continued."It's a successful model, so why change something you don't need to?"

The Binding of Isaac expansion we heard about back in January, titled The Wrath of the Lamb, is almost here. Creator Edmund McMillen announced in a series of tweets that the expansion will arrive in late May, and that it is jam-packed with content: new challenges and achievements, over ten new bosses, over 100 new items, a new character, a new ending, and tons of other new material. "What I'm getting at is there is a lot of extra shit in this damn thing," tweeted McMillen. "We have been working on it longer than the actual game."
The latest screens of The Wrath of the Lamb are in the gallery below. For all of that content, the expansion will only cost three bucks. McMillen also said there's a trailer on the way, but he's busy right now, working with Steam on release details and testing and polishing the game itself.

Star Wars: The Old Republic is finally coming to the Middle East and Europe today. Wait a minute -- hasn't the title been on sale in Europe for some time now? Well, yes, but not in countries like Iceland, Bulgaria, Croatia, and a dozen others.
BioWare is making a standard and deluxe version of its story-based MMO available both online and via select retailers (the former must be purchased through EA's Origin platform). Subscriptions are available in one-, three-, and six-month varieties. Hit up the official SWTOR website for a full list of countries where you can buy the game.

Similar to that other, foxy browser, Opera reached numerical version 12 (although in beta form), promising to be as fast and smooth as it's ever been. Included in the new revision are a slew of under-the-hood enhancements, along with a few cosmetic alterations. For starters, Opera 12 now offers complete 64-bit compatibility for both Mac and Windows, while "experimental" hardware acceleration and WebGL support are also in tow. Furthermore, the browser added a "smarter" tab-loading sequence, speed improvements for faster page uploads and a way to customize the look with a bundle of new themes -- of course, you can create your own as well. As for the backend tweaks, Opera announced it's abandoning its Unite and Widgets features in favor of an extension-driven model. Those of you eager to take it for a spin can hit the Opera link below to get started.

Microsoft challenged the editor of PC Pro to return to Hotmail after six years of using Gmail, to prove that its webmail service had vastly improved — but the challenge backfired when he had his Hotmail account hacked. PC Pro's editor say he was quietly impressed with a number of new Hotmail features, including SkyDrive integration and mailbox clean-up features. He'd even imported his Gmail and contacts into Microsoft's service. But the two-week experiment came to an abrupt end when Hotmail sent a message containing a malicious link to all of his contacts. 'What's even more worrying is that it's not only my webmail that's been compromised, but my Xbox login (which holds my credit card details) and now my PC login too. Because Windows 8 practically forces you to login with your Windows Live/Hotmail details to access features such as the Metro Store, synchronization and SkyDrive,' he writes."

It looks like Steve drew up an idea for an ad-supported OS. A patent was filed back in 2009 detailing how it was done. From the article: 'Rather than charge the normal upgrade price, which in those days was $99, he was thinking of shipping a second version of Mac OS 9 that would be given away for free — but would be supported instead by advertising. The theory was that this would pull in a ton of people who didn't normally upgrade because of the price, but Apple would still generate income through the advertising. And any time an owner of the free version wanted to get rid of the advertising, he or she could simply pay for the ad-free version. Steve's team had worked out the preliminary numbers the concept seemed financially sound.'"

Passwords 'were partially decrypted' in December 2010; Account names and online handles extracted; 'No evidence' of further hack
California MMO studio Cryptic has discovered a massive security breach to one of its databases some 16 months after the hack had occurred.
Account names, online handles, and encrypted passwords were extracted illegally by an unauthorised user. While passwords were encrypted, the studio revealed that “the intruder has been able to crack some portion of the passwords in this database”.
Customers have been notified via email and passwords have been reset. There is no evidence of further hacking, Cryptic added.
The studio explained the 16-month security lapse by claiming “evidence has just been uncovered due to increased security analysis”.
While there is no indications of further hacking, Cryptic said if such actions occurred it would put at risk very sensitive user information, including first and last name, e-mail address, date of birth, billing address, and the first six digits and the last four digits of credit cards registered on the site.

Infographic also shows that APAC leads for mobile data consumption.
Broadband solutions firm Sandvine made the infographic based on its 'Global Internet Phenomena Report 1H2012'.
YouTube is the most used mobile video platform in all regions, while Pandora secured six per cent of traffic in the US.
Meanwhile, 65 per cent of consumers in Latin America use mobile data, compared to 49 per cent in North America and APAC, though the latter consumes the most data with 602MB per month.

This is obscure, but a few people might be interested in it: A little indie title called Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is going to be free on Steam this weekend. The publisher, "Activision" (we've never heard of them – probably a really artsy two-man studio in Canada somewhere) needs a little more exposure for this game, so the multiplayer features will be free to download and play starting this Thursday, April 26, through the rest of the weekend, for anyone with a Steam account.
So if you've got some free time this weekend, maybe give the game a downloadand give some struggling indie developers a little bit of your attention for once. Who knows – maybe if the weekend goes well, this "Activision" will be encouraged to enter a competition or two. It could be the next Independent Games Competition finalist in waiting!

The world of Minecraft - Pocket Edition was pretty boring up to this point – just mines and mines, everywhere, as far as the eye can see. But finally, the other half of the game has been added in an update: Crafting is now available on the iOS and Android mobile versions of the popular sandbox title.
The crafting system for the mobile interface is called MATTIS, as in the Minecraft Advanced Touch Technology Interface System. All you need to do is open your inventory, choose what you want to make, and as long as you have the necessary components, it's made. Other additions in this update include better AI for zombies, cows and ducks, and descriptions of items in your inventory. We're really looking forward to the next update, though: Hopefully Mojang will put Pockets or Editions in the game next.

April 25th, 2012, 23:26 Posted By: wraggster
75 per cent of PC download stores won’t make enough money to justify support from publishers, Gamefly says.
The US retail rental firm, which acquired Direct2Drive 12 months ago, opened its .co.uk site earlier this year. And co-founder Sean Spector believes the rush to open rivals to Steam has ended.
“I don’t see there being more and more digital download retailers because for publishers, it is a lot of work for them,” he tells MCV.
“There’s Steam, there’s Gamefly, there’s Origin, there’s Amazon – those are the bigger brands – and then there’s the smaller brands like Green Man Gaming and GOG.
“The publishers don’t want 50 digital partners. That’s too much to manage. The reality is, the bottom 75 per cent won’t bring in enough revenue to justify the effort. It’s a lot of work. We work every day with publishers, over 300 of them.”
Gamefly is heavily pushing into the digital space. It last week announced plans to develop and publish its own Android and iOS titles.

Google will tightly integrate its new Google Drive online storage service with an upcoming version of its Chrome OS operating system, says Sundar Pichai, who oversees development of the company's Chrome products as well as its Google Apps online services. Chrome OS is Google's effort to move all applications and data onto the web (and its Chrome browser), but the OS still hasn't mastered the art of moving files from place to place. By integrating Chrome OS with Google Drive — the online storage service Google introduced on Tuesday — the company seeks to correct this problem. 'With Chromebooks, [Google Drive] is even more powerful,' Pichai says, 'because it just starts working naturally. Your local drive is also Google Drive. This makes it really powerful because you just don't think about it.' Basically, Google Drive — a service that operates on the web — will perform as if it was the local file system. If you open the 'save file' dialog box on Chrome OS, for instance, the system will take you straight to Google Drive. 'We'll effectively integrate [Google] Drive into the native file system of Chrome OS,' says Scott Johnson, Google's Google Drive product manager. 'All the core OS functionality will use [Google] Drive as a place to store data — if that's what you opt in to

Zenimax-owned Tokyo studio at early stages of production
Fabled Japanese developer Shinji Mikami is working on a survival horror project at his new studio Tango Gameworks. The game, codenamed Zwei, appears to be at early stages of production.
Heading up the project as executive director, Mikami’s team told Famitsu that the game will incorporate classic survival horror elements. In 2010, Bethesda Softworks parent company Zenimax Media acquired the Mikami’s Tokyo studio for an undisclosed fee. A month prior to the transaction, Zenimax raised $150m for what it claimed was a “tactical buyout”.At the time Mikami said it was “refreshing to find a publisher who understands, trusts, and supports the development of blockbuster games and works to make it a collaborative effort”.

Encouraging start for next big MMO
As many as 300,000 customers filled servers on the Diablo 3 open beta over the weekend, a community manager at developer Blizzard Entertainment has claimed.
Micah Whiple revealed the promising numbers on his personal Twitter account, though did not reveal total user numbers.
Diablo 3, which has been in development at various stages across the past ten years, is due for release in North America and Europe on May 15th.
Debates surrounding the health of the MMO market has intensified in recent months, with the genre’s frontrunner – World of Warcraft – unable to prevent a systemic loss to its user base.
Star Wars the Old Republic, developed by Electronic Arts studio BioWare, is said to be serving fewer and fewer concurrent users at peak hours. The publisher claims, however, that its overall subscriber base is not in decline. In February it was said that about 1.7 million people had subscribed to the game.

April 25th, 2012, 23:03 Posted By: wraggster
Microsoft plans to kick out a public Windows 8 'Release Preview' in early June, the last of the public downloads before the 'reimagined' Windows ends up on the shelves.
Revealing the plans at a Windows developer event in Tokyo, Microsoft Windows division boss Steven Sinofsky said that a 'nearly finished version of Windows 8 would be available for public download in the first week of June.
The company has yet to release further details on pricing or upgrade promotions, having promised the particulars "in the coming" months.
What Microsoft did announce is that the firm's cloud storage service SkyDrive would be made accessible through mobile apps and integrate with Microsoft Office and third party applications. The announcement came just a day before Google officially launched Google Drive.
Microsoft has plans to bring SkyDrive to iOS and, obviously, Windows Phone but said nothing about Android. Perhaps unsurprisingly the Google Drive announcement also didn't make mention of an app for Windows Phone.
It seems you're either in the Microsoft camp or the Google camp, but both seem to realise Apple is too big to avoid. We might have made the same argument about Android too but then Microsoft's ways are mysterious and not for mere mortals like us to understand.
Also somewhat suspiciously, SkyDrive launched with 7GB of free storage, compared with Google's 5GB. Perhaps 6GB would have been a bit too blatant? Paid storage plans look pretty decent too, with 20GB, 50GB and 100GB priced at US$10, $25 and $50 a year. That's not bad at all for cloud storage.
If you don't want to use it with an Android device anyway.
As for Windows 8, Microsoft isn't saying any more right now. We also rather hope that some of the technical press will get to have a look at the ARM-based Windows RT. Given this is a pre-install only solution, it's not something the public can test for themselves.
Whether Windows RT (and the bundled Office apps) is highly relevant for anyone thinking about picking up a new Ivy Bridge ultrabook or waiting to just how ridiculously thin and light Windows RT devices end up being.
