Diablo 3's weekend beta went about as smoothly as a hamster in a ball rolling down an erupting volcano – which is to say it was completely normal for a high-profile beta test. Saturday saw a peak of 300,000 concurrent players, Blizzard community manager Micah Whipple (Bashiok) tweeted, reporting the full number of testers for the weekend was "a lot."
Testers reported login and server errors as early as Friday, and a few complaints centered on the skill UI and other tweakable usability issues. The beta hit its main points, allowing people to play the full demo, leveling their characters to 13 and fighting the Skeleton King. All testing data will be wiped and players will start fresh when Diablo 3 launches on May 15.

It's at retail, but the selection is actually for downloadable PC titles
GameStop has announced an expansion to its PC game offerings at retail store locations. The leading games retailer is clearly looking to leverage brick-and-mortar in order to boost digital: more than 1,500 downloadable PC games are now available at 4,400 US stores.
Alternatively, customers can simply make a digital purchase at GameStop.com. To promote its new PC offerings, GameStop will also be providing "up to 75 percent off top PC game downloads," including hot games like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Civilization V, Age of Empires III, Deus Ex Human Revolution and Magicka Collection.

On this day in 2008, a submission was posted that C/C++ was losing ground so I decided to check out its current state. It seems that C has returned to the top while Java has dropped by the same amount, VB and PHP have dropped drastically, C++ is holding fast but now in third place and Objective-C and C# have climbed quite a bit. 2008 data thanks to SatanicPuppy: 1. Java (20.5%); 2. C (.14.7%); 3. VB (11.6%); 4. PHP (10.3%); 5. C++ (9.9%); 6. Perl (5.9%); 7. Python (4.5%); 8. C# (.3.8%); 9. Ruby(2.9%); 10. Delphi (2.7%). The other 10 in the top 20 are: JavaScript, D, PL/SQL, SAS, Pascal, Lisp/Scheme, FoxPro/xBase, COBOL, Ada, and ColdFusion."

'Light' server numbers due to decline in concurrent users, not subscribers, dev suggests
Subscription numbers for Star Wars The Old Republic are not in decline, an executive at BioWare has claimed days after an analyst group suggested the opposite is true.
Daniel Erickson, a writer at the EA-owned studio, suggested that concurrent player activity during peak hours has declined – which, he believes, explains the noticeable ‘light’ server populations – but paid subscription numbers are not falling.
Last week, Cowen and Company analyst Doug Creutz claimed that Star Wars MMO subscription numbers “peaked” in February at about 1.7 million members. He projected that the number will fall to about 1.25 million subscribers by the end of the current financial year, March 2013.
Electronic Arts did not validate Cowen and Company’s data, which was estimated via readings of server statistics. The publisher remains cagey in revealing game popularity data, though it may disclose more information to its investors in an upcoming financial call.
The game is widely regarded as one of EA’s most expensive projects in its thirty-year history.

Gabe Newell says studio is looking at 'open hardware solution in both the living-room and mobile spaces'
Valve is examining the feasibility of creating “open hardware platforms” as an alternative to existing proprietary console technologies, the company’s co-founder has revealed.
Speaking on the back of weeks of speculation that Valve is building the so-called “Steam Box”, Gabe Newell confirmed that the studio is considering a new bold move into the living-room space.
And, in another extraordinary disclosure, Newell also said the firm is examining an open hardware solution to mobile gaming.
“We’re looking hard at both the living-room space and the mobile space to try to see if we can create open hardware platforms that the industry can use so we can get out of proprietary traps that we’re headed in both of those,” Newell said.
Discussing the matter in a podcast interview with Seven Day Cooldown, Newell said such an initiative would involve “barely out-there hardware design” – an implication that such mobile and living-room devices would be relatively unique..

Major PC makers such as Dell, HP and Asus are said to be planning withdrawing optical drives from larger 15-inch and up notebooks, potentially marking the beginning of the end for optical drives in mobile PCs.
While rumours circulated that Apple may axe the default DVD drive from MacBook Pro notebooks, while retaining it as an optional add-on, Windows-based notebooks could also be planning such a move.
Taiwan based industry watcher the DigiTimes quoted supply chain sources tipping that HP, Dell and Asus were among those looking to ship larger 15-inch models without optical drives. Previously only the most portable of models has gone down that road.
Yet the same manufacturers may be looking to how Apple's mooted discless move is received before deciding one way or another. Acer had already commissioned a design but was "still fonder" of a design that keeps the optical drive.
It's interesting that the issue is coming up again given that the costs of incorporating an optical drive are now so minimal. Discless models could be just 1mm thinner and save just US$20. On that basis you'd have to say the only reason the move is being considered is because the manufacturers believe no one really uses optical discs any more.
While that $20 price difference doesn't sound much, it may also be part of a strategy to drive down the cost of Ivy Bridge-powered 15-inch ultrabooks to suitable levels. Sensibly priced 15-inch ultrabooks are believed to be a prerequisite before Intel has a chance at cracking the European market.

ABI Research reckons games, digital publishing, social networking and m-commerce are the four key tablet app platforms, and that they will account for 11 billion downloads across iPad and Android.
Mark Beccue, senior analyst, said: "Media tablet app consumption will mimic smartphone app use in some ways, but in many ways, it will be very different."
Children and seniors are expected to fill in the gaps for the tablet market, with almost one billion apps designed for kids will be downloaded in 2016.
Beccue continued: "The magic of media tablets for seniors and children is the touch screen interface. It's so intuitive. These demographic groups will rely heavily on downloaded apps over web surfing on their media tablets."

Panasonic 3DO emulator has been updated. Changes:
- Daedalus Encounter freeze fix updated. Viktor did a lot of debugging, and eventually found and fixed a difficult core emulation bug that was causing the Scene 5 freeze! This also uncovered a fix to an issue in Pebble Beach Golf Links.
- Samurai Shodown graphical issues fixed. Samurai Shodown was previously riddled with odd graphical issues, but no more! The characters render correctly, and the backgrounds are no longer black.

The five-million selling PC download sensation Minecraft will make its retail debut in GAME next month.
Like other downloadable Xbox 360 content, such as extra maps in Halo and Call of Duty, shoppers will be able to purchase Minecraft in-store in the form of a digital download code, which they can later redeem on Xbox Live.
“We’re very pleased Minecraft is coming out on Xbox Live and I think it shows the commitment to bringing out great quality games on that platform,” Xbox Live’s UK product manager Pav Bhardwaj told MCV.
“As with any anticipated new digital content release, we expect to see an increase in Microsoft Point sales both at retail and directly through Xbox Live.
“The four Arcade Next games will also be available at selected GAME stores as part of our ongoing digital code distribution business model.”
Minecraft is one of four downloadable games Microsoft is releasing as part of its Arcade Next promotion which kicked off earlier this week, with the arrival of stunt bike action title Trials Evolution on Wednesday, April 18th. Fantasy action game Bloodforge follows on April 25th. Both are priced at 1,200 Microsoft Points each (around £10).
Multiplayer-focused adventure Fable Heroes launches on April 25th for 800 Points (around £7). Minecraft completes the promotion on May 9th, priced at 1,600 Microsoft Points (around £14).
Microsoft will be supporting the Arcade Next promotion at retail with posters, banners and other point-of-sale materials. A trailer has debuted on Xbox Live, which will be followed up with advertising on Xbox channels and activity on the Xbox Community Network through social media.

Tom's Hardware takes the newly-released, top-of-the-line Ivy Bridge Core i7-3770K for a spin. All Core i7 Ivy Bridge CPUs come with Intel HD Graphics 4000, which despite the DirectX 11 support, only provides a modest boost to the Sandy Bridge Intel HD Graphics 3000. However, the new architecture tops the charts for low power consumption, which should make the Ivy Bridge mobile offerings more desirable. In CPU performance, the new Ivy Bridge Core i7 is only marginally better than last generation's Core i7-2700K. Essentially, Ivy Bridge is not the fantastic follow-up to Sandy Bridge that many enthusiasts had hoped for, but an incremental improvement. In the end, those desktop users who decided to skip Sandy Bridge to hold out for Ivy Bridge, probably shouldn't have. On the other hand, since Intel priced the new Core i7-3770K and Core i5-3570K the same as their Sandy Bridge counterparts, there is no reason to purchase the previous generation chips."Reader jjslash points out that coverage is available from all the usual suspects — pick your favorite: AnandTech, TechSpot, Hot Hardware,ExtremeTech, and Overclockers.

Unexpected results, positive and negative, appear to have postponed the game's development
Valve has remained silent about the Half-Life 3 project due to significant unexpected occurrences during the game’s development, the company’s managing director Gabe Newell has explained.
Newell, who co-founded the company in 1996, discussed the unannounced Half-Life project without mentioning it by name. He instead spoke at length about ‘Ricochet 2’ – a project that likely does not exist – in what appears to be a code word for Half-Life 3.
“In terms of Ricochet 2, we always have this problem that when we talk about things too far in advance,” Newell said.
“We end up changing our minds as we're going through and developing stuff, so as we're thinking through the giant story arc which is Ricochet 2, you might get to a point where you're saying something is surprising us in a positive way and something is surprising us in a negative way, and, you know, we'd like to be super-transparent about the future of Ricochet 2.”
In a podcast interview with Seven Day Cooldown, Newell suggested that Valve’s ongoing silence on the Half-Life 3 project was fairer to fans than exposing the project along with its various transformations and delays.

Is your notebook still your preferred second TV? Well, it seems you're now in the minority. The hip new way of consuming the drug of the nation -- after the 'ole tube itself -- is on a tablet, according to a recentViacom study. Over 2,500 people were polled nationwide, and the results show a shift away from computers and smartphones to slates. Tabs made up 15 percent of full-length TV show viewings, with the increase of streaming services and companion apps being cited as contributing factors to the trend. We don't know what the fuss is about, we watch all our telly on a tablet.

Gabe Newell returns to issue of charging players based on how likeable they are
Valve will pursue its experiment with the free-to-play games model with a new plan to release its upcoming game DOTA 2 for free, the company’s managing director has said.
Gabe Newell claimed Valve is not applying a wholly conventional freemium model for the online action strategy game.
Usually, freemium games are made available to everyone and later monetised by selling optional in-game items.
But in an upcoming interview with Seven Day Cooldown, Newell said the game would be “free-to-play [but] it'll have some twists”.
"The issue that we're struggling with quite a bit is something I've kind of talked about before, which is how do you properly value people's contributions to a community?” he said, reflecting on a discussion he had with Develop last year.
Last year Newell told Develop that “the games industry has this broken model, which is one price for everyone. That’s actually a bug, and it’s something that we want to solve through our philosophy of how we create entertainment products".

Intel believes that a rise in screen resolution is on the cards for notebooks and desktop PC monitors.
Apple appears to have triggered a resolution war in the smartphone and tablet space but according to a Liliputing report, Intel is seemingly of a mind that laptops, ultrabooks and all-in-one desktops will all see similar increases in pixel density.
What sort of resolutions are we talking about? 2560 x 1440 pixels on dinky little 11-inch ultrabooks and 2800 x 1800 on the larger 13-inch models. Desktop monitors and 15-inch laptops will see resolutions rise to 3840 x 2160, they reckon.
The notebook market in the past has gone through an arms race of resolution as manufacturers sourced panels with bigger numbers to entice punters. Only later did owners work out that this was distinctly unpleasant to use and the on-board graphics had zero chance of doing anything like play a game at the native resolutions on offer.
So what's change this time around? It doesn't seem unreasonable that the graphics performance will be there but such mighty resolutions depend greatly on how well the host OS scales up. Windows 7 sort of does it, but not in a very satisfactory way. Will Windows 8 be better?
Apparently it is, for the Metro-style UI at least. However if you want to run desktop applications... well, just sit closer to the screen okay?

We're sure some of you aren't as interested in the Windows 8 versions destined for workplace drudgery as you are the home editions, but admit it, the IT guy inside of you is a little curious. As detailed in an official blog post, the new unique feature in Windows 8 Enterprise is Windows To Go, which we think of as Windows on a stick. Basically it allows you to run your corporate image on a home PC or other personal devices -- the opposite of that USB disk you carry to work with portable versions of your favorite unsanctioned apps. Also new is the ability to automatically sideload internal Metro apps as well as enhancements to the virtual desktop client. Of course Windows 7 Enterprise features like DirectAccess, BranchCache and AppLocker are still there, but some features like BitLocker are now available in the Pro version of Windows 8 too. If you were thinking you might like these at home, don't forget that Enterprise is only sold with Software Assurance (Microsoft's perpetual upgrade program), but that does bring extra abilities too, like a free Virtual Desktop Access license -- you didn't think you got that for free did you -- and the optional Companion Device license that extends your VDI and Windows To Go rights to four more personal devices. Now, if it just included the ability to boot directly to the desktop, then most corporation's biggest concern with Windows 8 would be appeased.
