Today, gritty science fiction MMO Eve Online is famous for many things: its player-driven, emergent gameplay, its complex virtual economy, and, perhaps most of all, its daytime telly quality drama. But nine years ago today, Eve Online was famous for nothing. It was a fledgling persistent world made by a little known Icelandic developer with big ideas but no guarantees. Since then, every year, it has grown. And now, Eve is on the cusp of becoming something even greater: a PC MMO that interacts with a console first-person shooter spin-off.How CCP has maintained its nine-year old MMO - and keep veteran players interested - is one of gaming's most compelling success stories. At a time when publishers are struggling with subscriber numbers after pumping hundreds of million dollars into high profile alternatives, Eve's slow but stead rise continues. Here, in this detailed interview, Eurogamer talks to senior producer Jon Lander, lead game designer Kristoffer Touborg, and community developer Sveinn Kjarval about pissing players off, the upcoming Inferno expansion and the state of play in 2012 - the most pivotal year in Eve's history.Eve Online is a virtual playground in which players pretty much do what they want in. This sounds great in theory, but in practice it must be pretty scary for you as developers.Jon Lander: I don't see it as scary though. It's easy.Sveinn Kjarval: It's comforting in a way, because you have all these expert advisers telling you what you should do and giving you all this great feedback.Jon Lander: I would be much more worried if I woke up every morning thinking, s**t, what have I got to do to entertain these guys now for the next six months? I was having a chat with Hilmar [Veigar Pétursson, CEO] the other day, and, as ever, he came out with one of these great sound-bites, which was, we're the janitors of Eve. We gave up being in charge of Eve a long time ago, like when we first let the players in. So, it's the players' game. This is why you see such strong reactions when people play it. They are the owners of it. They're the people who create all the good stuff. They're the people who are massively invested in this. All we do is provide some good content, throw a stone in to muck everything up every now and again with a new release, and we enforce real world legality, the terms of service and the EULA.As we got to the end of last year, you could see Eve had started stagnating because we hadn't messed up the balance. You could see the number of PvP kills per person per day was tailing off. It was going down. People weren't engaging in the game any more. So we did Crucible, which was to throw in some new ships to change the mix up and fix a whole load of stuff people had been telling us about. We did that, and then we saw the PvP kills start going up again. Escalation [the the recent update that prepares the game for the Inferno expansion], has thrown a big stone into the pond, and you can feel the ripples already happening. The reason we called it Escalation was it's destabilising the Eve universe for 22nd May, when the big Inferno release comes out. We're changing war decs, we're making Mercenary being a more viable profession to be in Eve. We're throwing in a ton of new modules. We haven't thrown new modules in in about eight years. It's going to change everything. Everybody will ask, how am I going to make the best out of these things, as opposed to us saying, you now have a gold shield and everybody shall have one. People say, I don't want that. I'm going to use this and use it in a really weird way no-one else has thought of, and that will be brilliant, and then everybody will be talking about it on the forums, and they'll all copy me, and then they'll all come up with a counter. So all we do is keep things ever so slightly out of balance, make people think and let people make the content.Do you deliberately go out of your way with new content to try and create issues that will revitalise the player base?Jon Lander: Absolutely. If you sit down and play Eve you'll never play all of it. I've been playing since 2005, I've played about half the game in terms of things you can do. So we don't need to make a ton of new stuff. All we need to do is keep mixing that stuff around. There's more content in this game than in most other games, and you could constantly be playing it, because it's not level capped, or it's not, this is inappropriate if you're a level 60, this is only for level 10. That doesn't exist in Eve. There's a huge amount of opportunity for us to mix it up.Dust 514, coming in later this year, that's the biggest expansion we could do to Eve. All of a sudden there's a free-to-play first-person shooter where these guys are running around on the planet, and I'm in my spaceship up here, and they can call in. It's not like in Call of Duty where they say, air strike, bang. They go, are you up there? Yeah I'm here, but I'm getting shot at by a load of other people because they don't want me to air strike you, so, can you get a move on please? You have a real interaction. So the biggest new thing we've done and will do this year is Dust. But then all we need to do is add all of this additional stuff. It's easy for us to keep mixing things up.

Indie Royale has broken out a brand new bundle for the month of May, with five big games for a tiny price. This time around, the great MOBA/RPG mashupDungeon Defenders is included in the bunch, along with Containment: The Zombie Puzzler (which is of course a zombie puzzler), abstract arcade racerData Jammers: FastForward, trippy falling game Brainpipe, and the indie space sim sequel Weird Worlds: Return to Infinite Space.
All of these can currently be had for the minimum price of $5.28, but as always that price will fall if anyone comes along and pays above it. There are also a few extras already unlocked, including a couple of original soundtracks, extra tracks for Data Jammers, and two extra games: Dr. Blob's Organism and Soup du Jour. Anyone paying over $7 also gets an album from chiptune band Starscream. In short, that's more games than you have time to play, all for less than you'll pay to see The Avengers this weekend. The bundle's up for sale for the next week.

In a time when all MMORPGs charged a monthly subscription fee, Guild Warswas the shining light that said a monthly payment wasn't the only future for the genre. For enthusiasts of the first game in the series, ArenaNet didn't need to change much in Guild Wars 2, but the upcoming title adds upon the instanced gameplay of the original by adding events and making the universe feel more alive than ever before.
Gone are the healers and quests have been abandoned, but you shouldn't see that as a bad thing, as ArenaNet's new direction really drives home why Guild Wars 2 doesn't seem to be your average MMO.

The Testament of Sherlock Holmes is officially dropping in September for console and PC, Focus Home Interactive has announced. We can't be sure, but such a brazen release window announcement seems a little odd to us. Obviously a publisher wants its consumers to know when its game launches, but to just come out and say it like that... we think Focus Home is hiding something. Something sinister. Something only a genius detective could figure out.
Too bad we don't know any genius detectives, by name, ficticious or otherwise. Oh, well. We'll take our chances on Sherlock Holmes in September, seeing as the game is taking its own chances by launching in the midst of holiday-season AAAA madness.

If you have to issue an explanation to follow up an explanation, then it's pretty safe to say the first one wasn't clear enough, and it's under those circumstances that Microsoft's Steven Sinofsky and theWindows 8 team are returning to the subject of Media Center and DVD movie support. After addressing both a few days ago, the internet backlash was (predictably) quick to finding out that Media Center would be available only as an upgrade to the Pro version of the OS, and that without it Windows wouldn't natively play DVDs. What many may not know however, and the new FAQ points out, is that this is not an entirely new thing -- Windows XP did not have support outside of specialized editions or add-ons, several versions of Vista did not play DVDs and on Windows 7 the Basic and Starter editions lacked the add-on. Of course, for most users this doesn't matter in the least since brand new PCs tend to ship with third party software to play DVDs (or Blu-ray movies where applicable, which no version of Windowshas or will natively support). Answering the question we had of what this means for users upgrading their own computers, they'll either need to see if they have existing third party software to play DVDs that is compatible with Windows 8, or acquire Media Center post-upgrade.
With the new trend of discless devices (tablets, netbooks, ultrabooks and all in between) Microsoft saves a few bucks on the licensing costs for unsupported technology, while it and OEMs only pay up on computers designed to play DVDs out of the box (Dolby and MPEG codecs for online video streaming are included in all versions). This same theory applies to Media Center, which despite some rumors will continue to support CableCARD and all other hardware supported by Windows 7, with its cost "essentially built into Pro Pack". How annoying this particular decision by Microsoft is and if it precludes fans of DVD playback and Media Center from upgrading to what is a "much consistent experience" will be clearer once pricing is revealed, but we'd suggest the team stay close to that blog post button.

Blizzard is gearing up for launch and demand should be high, says Arvind Bhatia
Blizzard fans, after a long. long wait, will finally be able to pick up Diablo III in about a week and a half. The game is expected to put up solid numbers for Activision Blizzard, selling through several million copies, Sterne Agee analyst Arvind Bhatia said.
Bhatia estimates that the game will sell 3.5 million units this year alone and should sell around 4 million copies or more for the lifetime of the title.
"We think Diablo III, which is releasing after a gap of 12 years since the launch of Diablo II, has the potential to sell more than 4 million units life-time... We note that Diablo II had sold 4M units by August 2001 or 14 months following its initial release in June 2010," he said.
Bhatia does see Diablo III as a potential catalyst in the near-term for Activision's stock. He's currently maintaining a "Buy" rating with a $17 price target.
Blizzard recently detailed how its auction house will operate in-game and what kind of cut the company will take from each transaction.

Zenmiax Online Studios has released an announcement trailer forThe Elder Scrolls Online, its upcoming MMORPG set in the same universe as Daggerfall, Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim.

"You may already know that Microsoft plans to sell Windows Media Center as a separate, paid pack, but now the company has revealed that Windows 8 will also stop default support for DVD playback. You'll only be able to play DVDs and Blu-rays if you upgrade to the Media Center pack. 'Acquiring either the Windows 8 Media Center Pack or the Windows 8 Pro Pack gives you Media Center, including DVD playback (in Media Center, not in Media Player), broadcast TV recording and playback (DBV-T/S, ISDB-S/T, DMBH, and ATSC), and VOB file playback. Pricing for these Packs, as well as retail versions of Windows 8, will be announced closer to the release date. To give you some indication of Media Center Pack pricing, it will be in line with marginal costs.'"In a comment, Microsoft's Steven Sinofsky elaborates: "(marginal is small, honest, and we just haven't determined the final prices yet based on ongoing work but we are aiming for single digit dollars but we don't control the truly marginal costs). We wanted to include Media Player for everyone without everyone incurring the cost even if they don't even have an optical drive."

Valve has dashed any hopes of a Half-Life 3 reveal at E3 by confirming that its has "no plans to make any product announcements" at this year's event.
The confirmation came from Valve vice president of marketing Doug Lombardi, responding to Joystiq's enquiry regarding an email exchange between Gabe Newell and a player reported by fansite ValveTime.
Replying to the player's offer to attach a valve to his eyeball shouldHL3 be revealed, Newell stressed that the developer would only be showing previously announced games.
“We are not announcing anything at E3. Really,” he said. “We are not announcing Half-Life 3 or Portal 3 or Left 4 Dead 3. We are going to be showing stuff everyone already knows about ([Counterstrike: Global Offensive], Dota 2, [Steam Big Picture Mode UI])”.
Lombardi and Newell''s comments also rule out any early showing of the "wearable computer" Valve revealed it was working on last month in a job listing.
While there was never any reason to believe that Valve would showHL3 - or any other unannounced title, for that matter - at E3, the developer's confirmation means yet another big hitter will not be making any big announcements this year, with Microsoft and Sonyalready having played down the chances of new hardware at the June conference.

You may remember a certain, somewhat anticipated cloud service finally coming in to land in recent days. That wasn't the only news in nebular computing last week, however: perhaps in anticipation of Google's long-rumored Drive service, Microsoft made some updates to the Windows Phone app for its own offering, SkyDrive. This comes not long after the release of desktop SkyDrive applications for Windows and OSX, all suggesting that Redmond's hoping to cut itself as large a slice of the cloud-storage pie as it can, preferably while others are still taking their seats at the table. We spent some time with the latest quiver of tools from Microsoft, to see how they've progressed.

Wikipad's Android 4.0 gaming tablet still hasn't received a definitive release date despite having just half a season left to meet its launch target, but that hasn't stopped its creator from boosting the feature set. When the tablet does arrive, it will now bake in Gaikai's game streaming service for you to start playing games as soon as the shrink wrap's off the box. In return for the long wait since CES, Wikipad is also giving its slate a heavy makeover: the 8.1-inch screen is ballooning to 10.1 inches, while a lighter body will carry an unnamed quad-core processor and an option for 3G. Otherwise, you're looking at much of the same formula that first emerged in January, which includes traditional gamepad-like controls on either side as well as front and back cameras, 1080p video support and 8GB of space to store your games when you don't want to bring a microSD card. We're looking forward to getting our paws on those dual analog sticks soon, but for now you can check the news release after the break.

Weekly userbase increases by 100,000 in just under a month
We R Interactive’s Facebook football lifestyle sim I Am Playr has surpassed one million monthly active users, the developer has claimed.
Released in October last year, the company said that the Unity-powered game had increased its weekly user-count by 100,000 in the last month alone.
I Am Playr is a first-person football simulator which allows users to play matches and also work on their player's fitness through training off the field.
“Our aim is for I Am Playr to be the world’s biggest, most authentic online football game and to have reached this milestone and be able to stake our claim as the biggest Facebook Unity game just six months since launch is a pretty incredible achievement,” said We R Interactive CEO David Rose.
“Fuelling further growth, development of the mobile version of I Am Playr is well underway in preparation for the Euros 2012.”

Publisher admits it has been too focused 'on what's to come' rather than on current issues
EA is inviting customers to provide feedback on its digital distribution platform Origin.
The publisher has asked users to leave comments on its website stating what they would like to see added or improved upon.
The company said that it “hadn’t always succeeded in communicating what’s already available” and had in the past been too focused on the future of the platform.
A live Q&A will be hosted by Origin creative director Robert Kissinger and product manager Mike Lewis on May 8th at 10am PST to discuss the issues facing the digital store.
Origin currently has accrued a customer base of more than 9.3millin users since its launch in June 2011, whilst the publisher claims the service has peaked at one million concurrent users in recent months.

Mozilla is working on a revamp of Firefox to synchronize its various versions — desktop, tablet, phone and Windows 8 Metro — into a single visual style, according to documents posted by members of its user interface (UI) design team. The project, which does not have a name, and the earlier blending of Mozilla's mobile and desktop design groups, is meant to bring more coherence to the various versions of the open-source browser. 'One of our major goals for the year [is] getting Firefox to feel more like one product — more 'Firefoxy' — across all our platforms, desktop to tablet to phone,' Madhava Enro of the Mozilla UI design team, said in a post to his personal blog on Tuesday. Enro posted a slideshow he and others used the week before to present their proposals at a company get-together. According to the presentation, some UI elements will be shared across all Firefox editions, among them a lean toward 'softer texture' and smoother curves in the design."

Today Bethesda announced that their popular Elder Scrolls series of video games will be getting its own MMORPG. It's planned for 2013, and will be available for PCs and Macs. 'Players will discover an entirely new chapter of Elder Scrolls history in this ambitious world, set a millennium before the events of Skyrim as the daedric prince Molag Bal tries to pull all of Tamriel into his demonic realm. "It will be extremely rewarding finally to unveil what we have been developing the last several years," said game director and MMO veteran Matt Firor, whose previous work includes Mythic's well-received Dark Age of Camelot. "The entire team is committed to creating the best MMO ever made – and one that is worthy of The Elder Scrolls franchise."'

New York Judge Gary Brown has found that IP addresses don't provide enough evidence to identify pirates, and wrote an extensive argument explaining his reasoning. A quote from the judge's order: 'While a decade ago, home wireless networks were nearly non-existent, 61% of U.S. homes now have wireless access. As a result, a single IP address usually supports multiple computer devices – which unlike traditional telephones can be operated simultaneously by different individuals. Different family members, or even visitors, could have performed the alleged downloads. Unless the wireless router has been appropriately secured (and in some cases, even if it has been secured), neighbors or passersby could access the Internet using the IP address assigned to a particular subscriber and download the plaintiff's film.' Perhaps this will help to stem the tide of frivolous mass lawsuits being brought by the RIAA and other rights-holders where IP addresses are the bulk of the 'evidence' suggested."

Microsoft announced that the Windows Live brand will be retired in a shake up of the software giant's approach to cloud services ahead of the release of Windows 8.
Microsoft's Windows Live group VP Chris Jones, in addition to needing a new job title, pointed out in a post on the Building Windows 8 blog, that Windows Live was a confusing brand that converted software, web-based services and an ID account.
"Windows 8 provides us with an opportunity to reimagine our approach to services and software and to design them to be a seamless part of the Windows experience, accessible in Windows desktop apps, Windows Metro style apps, standard web browsers, and on mobile devices," said Jones.
What that appears to mean is just that the Live brand is going away and will be replaced with a number of super generic and boring names such as Account, Storage/Docs, Email, Calendar, Contacts and Messaging. Microsoft 'reimagining' at its best.
It seems that the announcement is essentially a reiteration of the built-in cloud features of Windows 8, as opposed to earlier Windows needing a bolt-on service.
