Customers urged to visit security pages for guidance
Blizzard Entertainment has issued new security guidelines for Diablo 3 following a growing number reports that hackers have illicitly assumed control of paying customer accounts.
The California developer confirmed that it has received a spike in reports of individual account compromises, though claims this is customary for new releases of this kind.
“We know how frustrating it can be to become the victim of account theft, and as always, we're dedicated to doing everything we can to help our players keep their accounts safe," the company said.
"We appreciate everyone who's doing their part to help protect their accounts as well.”
Blizzard has detailed a list of countermeasures, including SMS authentication, that it urges customers to examine.

Restructure for BioWare Austin after MMO loses 25% of subscribers
EA has announced layoffs at Star Wars: The Old Republic studio BioWare Austin as part of corporate restructuring.
This comes shortly after the revelation that the MMO had lost over 25 percent of its subscription base.
EA claims the figure of 1.3 million subscribers was well past its goal for the game, but investors were not happy with the news, and stock prices took a dive amidst worries about the health of the game months after its release.
"Sadly, we are bidding farewell to some talented, passionate and exceptionally hard-working people who helped make SWTOR a reality," reads a letter posted on the game's official forums.
"Impacting people’s lives this way is always very hard, but we’re ensuring the affected people are treated with dignity, fairness and respect."

Some Frostbite-powered PC games released next year will require a 64-bit operating system, engine maker DICE has revealed.Chilling.
This presumably includes new DICE games, whatever they may be - Battlefield 4, maybe Battlefield: Bad Company 3, maybe Mirror's Edge 2.It also stretches to include the growing number of EA games built on Frostbite 2 - a tactic that allows EA to save on (Unreal Engine 3) licensing fees.BioWare's Command & Conquer: Generals 2will be powered by Frostbite 2, as will, we presume, Dead Space 3.Games already built on Frostbite 2 include Need for Speed: The Runs and the new Medal of Honor game, Warfighter."We'll have Frostbite-powered games in 2013 that will _require_ a 64-bit OS," announced Frostbite 2 rendering architect Johan Andersson on Twitter."If you are on 32-bit, great opportunity to upgrade to Windows 8."More than half of the PC users in the world don't own a 64-bit version of Windows, regardless of whether or not they have 64-bit CPUs. They can't flick a switch to enable 64-bit - they need to buy a new version of Windows, which is costly. So why is DICE making the switch? Well, 64-bit processors are the future, even if they've been mainstream since 2003 - although they didn't take off properly until the Core 2 Duo arrived in 2006.A 64-bit CPU handles twice the data of a 32-bit CPU per clock cycle. Therefore, it's better. A 64-bit CPU also more efficiently uses RAM.

Ghost Recon's tactical tour of Facebook begins, with Ghost Recon Commanderhitting the social media site earlier today. Developed by John Romero's social studio Loot Drop, Commander is linked with Ubisoft's free-to-play Ghost Recon Online and the upcoming Ghost Recon: Future Soldier.
Ghost Recon Commander is an isometric, tactical-strategy game within the popular Tom Clancy license, featuring ten "replayable missions, three difficulty levels and dozens of weapons for players to choose from."
By playing Commander, players can unlock "exclusive weapons, weapon skins and bonuses to use while playing Ghost Recon: Future Soldier and Ghost Recon Online." There are also additional "benefits" to linking the products, such as unlocking characters in Commander by playing Future Soldier. It is advisable to check it out; however, we wouldn't recommend poking anyone on the battlefield. One of you won't make it out alive.
Joystiq has contacted Ubisoft on the release date for Commander's mobile version, which was announced in April.

The Blizzardforumsarebursting with stories of Diablo 3 players' gold and items magically disappearing from their accounts, and while we bemoan the losses they're not entirely surprising.
"Historically, the release of a new game -- such as a World of Warcraftexpansion -- will result in an increase in reports of individual account compromises, and that's exactly what we're seeing now with Diablo 3," Blizzards told Joystiq this evening. "We know how frustrating it can be to become the victim of account theft, and as always, we're dedicated to doing everything we can to help our players keep their Battle.net accounts safe -- and we appreciate everyone who's doing their part to help protect their accounts as well."

If you're a multitasking extraordinaire who depends on Windows as your primary computing platform of choice, there's a good chance you utilize more than one monitor to get your work done -- unfortunately, the seventh iteration of Microsoft's OS didn't offer as much support in this arena as most display warriors would prefer. The Consumer Preview of Windows 8 offered a few functionality improvements, and with its upcoming Release Preview, Microsoft is focusing on further enhancing the experience. Mark Yalovsky, a lead program manager on the User Experience team, put together a lengthy piece on what kind of goodies we can expect.
Among the highlighted changes is the ability to access the Start, app switching and charms menus from the corners on any monitor, rather than just having these options locked to only the primary display. The Release Preview also improves shared edges and corners so that the flow of cross-display navigation won't get interrupted by obnoxious corners popping up when you don't intend them to. Finally, the option of dragging and dropping Metro-style apps (as well as snapped apps) between monitors has also been included in the new build. These enhancements may seem small, but will go a long way toward appeasing those of us who can't live without more than one screen. For the full listing of feature changes, view Microsoft's video below and check out Mark's post at the source.

Love driving but hate traffic? We hear you, and so do the people at Inrix. While the company might not come to the forefront of your mind when you consider the crowded world of navigation solutions, Inrix is a significant player in the field -- even if much of its presence exists behind the scenes. The company collects and analyzes data points from nearly 100 million sources, and now it's putting that information to work with Inrix Traffic 4 for iOS. In addition to helping users avoid congestion brought on by road work, police activity, local events and traffic accidents, the app now provides drivers with optimal routes and estimated arrival times for their two most common destinations -- a feature that's somewhat reminiscent of Nokia Drive 3. Inrix also leverages its data analysis to provide users with ideal departure times and even estimate traffic congestion throughout the day based on historical information. What's more, commuters can now quickly provide these estimated arrival times and routes to loved ones and co-workers via text message or email.
While the basic version of Inrix Traffic 4 is free, you'll have the option of upgrading to a premium version for $24.99, which brings traffic camera information and allows you to add more than two common destination points. We're told that Android users will soon find these features work their way across the aisle, although Inrix isn't yet ready to give a specific arrival date. If you're curious to learn more about Inrix Traffic 4, just hop the break for a demo video and the full PR.

Microsoft has continued to improve software for its Kinect peripheral, with the newest Kinect for Windows Software Development Kit update adding new skeletal tracking and the Kinect Studio developer tool.
The software adds support for a ten-joint skeletal tracking system, which accurately tracks the head, neck, and arms of seated individuals in near and default mode. The mode ignores legs and hips as many PC users will be sitting behind a desk when using their Kinect for Windows. The SDK also improves overall skeletal tracking performance and face-tracking capabilities.
The Kinect Studio developer tool allows users to record and playback Kinect data for the testing of applications.
The SDK also introduces more language support for speech recognition, including English/Great Britain, English/Ireland, English/Australia, English/New Zealand, English/Canada, French/France, French/Canada, Italian/Italy, Japanese/Japan, Spanish/Spain and Spanish/Mexico.

Gamers play Command & Conquer titles for 10.4 hours per week on average – almost an hour more than the typical game.
This week, GameVision Brand Map turns to the real-time strategy genre to take a look at one of its earliest franchises: Command & Conquer.
We asked 6,724 gamers about the EA brand, of whom 586 had played it in the last six months. Of these, we sought more detail from 267 gamers.
This brand’s most enjoyed aspects are ‘fighting and combat’ and ‘mental challenge’ (27 per cent each), followed by ‘exploration and discovery’ (25 per cent), ‘being a hero’ (21 per cent) and ‘speed and concentration’ (20 per cent). A quarter of those playing are still enjoying these aspects in 2003’s Command & Conquer: Generals – good news for the upcoming sequel in 2013.
Command & Conquer enjoys its highest levels of brand awareness in Germany, where 56 per cent of gamers are aware of it. The UK comes in a close second with 52 per cent. Italian gamers have the highest play rates at 10 per cent, followed by German gamers at eight per cent.
This game is played for a mean of 10.4 hours per week, compared to 9.5 hours for the average game. 83 per cent of Command & Conquer players are males, with 25 to 29-year-olds making up 19 per cent of those playing the game (compared to an average of 10 per cent), followed by users aged 15 to 19 and 20 to 24 at 18 per cent each. Males aged 35 to 39 also score slightly more than average on this game. Three per cent of players are females aged 30 to 34, which is the same as the average game.
Other popular games played by those who enjoy this brand include Grand Theft Auto (62 per cent), Medal of Honor (60 per cent) and Unreal Tournament (55 per cent).

While Odin and Zeus's adherents might reasonably struggle to agree on which deity would win in a fight, it's commonly agreed thatPopulous is the true god of god games. Designer and illustrator Jon Caplin is well aware of this, and has created his own offering to Bullfrog's genre-defining 1989 classic in the form of Reprisal.
The browser-based homage is Caplin's first game, but it doesn't show. Its chunky, and fashionable, pixel visuals are augmented with an attractive, tilt-shifted depth of field effect that gives the game a unique look, while the cheerful tutorial leads you through the game's territory-conquering gameplay with easy charm.

Just six months after Google Chrome eclipsed Mozilla's Firefox to become the world's second most popular Web browser, Chrome finally surpassed Microsoft's Internet Explorer on Sunday to become the most-used Web browser in the world, according to Statcounter. Since May 2011, Internet Explorer's global market share has been steadily decreasing from 43.9 percent to 31.4 percent of all worldwide users. In that time, Chrome has climbed from below 20 percent to nearly 32 percent of the market share. Yet, while Chrome is now the No. 1 browser in the world, it still lags behind Internet Explorer here in the U.S., but that will soon change. Chrome currently has 27.1 percent of the U.S. market share, compared to Internet Explorer's 30.9 percent, but IE is seeing significant drop-offs in usage while Chrome continues to rise.

In-game currency will not be transferable or redeemable after server shut down
Electronic Arts has informed Dragon Age Legends players that the game’s servers will be cut off in about thirty days.
Customers have been told their in-game currency will not be redeemable or transferable to other BioWare Social games, but EA has promised it will provide users with a free download version of Dragon Age Legends soon after the social game goes offline.
Dragon Age Legends launched in the first calendar quarter of 2011 and seized on the publicity provided by the boxed product Dragon Age Origins 2.
At the time of going to press, the social game has about 110,000 monthly active users, though there appears to be no signs of a sharp decline.
A Bioware spokesperson said “the unfortunate reality is that Dragon Age Legends doesn’t make enough revenue to sustain itself”.

Crayola and a colouring pad, Henry? No thanks, I wanna play Draw Something.
The days of children playing in the streets are fading away, as youngsters opt for digital alternatives across consoles, PCs, laptops – and now tablets, according to an infographic from Schools.com.
Almost a quarter of parents have given their child a smartphone, iPad or iPod to keep them busy during errand runs.
Gameplay is the most common child tablet use with 77 per cent and 57 per complete educational tasks, while communicating to friends and family is the least common activity on just 15 per cent.
Interestingly, 77 per cent of parents believe tablets are beneficial to kids, and the same figure reckon they help with creativity.

Electronic Arts and BioWare's social soiree in Ferelden will be coming to an end on June 18, 2012, according to the official Dragon Age Legendswebsite. E-commerce for the title ended yesterday, meaning that while the game it still active for the time being, it's no longer possible to convert your real-life dollars into fake Dragon Dollarscrowns for use in Ferelden's many shops.
BioWare has also initiated a "massive fire sale" on all in-game items until the servers go down, so anyone with stockpiles of fake internet money can get their fake internet money's worth, at least for a few weeks. If the thought of living without a weird Facebook adaptation of the Dragon Age world is too much to handle, take heart: A single-player version of the game will be made available on the official site "shortly after the current version of the game shuts down."

The rumored Tex Murphy Kickstarter has been confirmed, to the tune of $216,000 (out of $450k as of this writing). That's how much creators Chris Jones and Aaron Conners have put together already to make the long-awaited "Project Fedora," the next in the cult classic series of full motion video sci-fi noir titles.
You can get a copy of the (eventual) game just by backing at the price of $15, and there are lots of other rewards for higher payments, including a collector's edition, new commentary for the old Tex Murphy games, and even the chance to beta test and be in the game itself. The creators say that the game will have full-motion video, but it will also include a 3D game world, with branching paths of story to follow. As Tex says in the wild Kickstarter video, "it's hat-in-hand time," so go over and give if you want to get in early.
