Intel said that there are more than 75 models of ultrabook designs set to arrive this year, with 26 already on sale and that devices costing US$699 will appear.
"Industry momentum continues to scale in the Ultrabook category with 26 different models now available for purchase in various markets around the world," Intel spokeswoman Becky Emmett blogged.
Pointing out that Intel's super thin and light notebook category is a "mere 9 months old", Emmett said that PC makers worldwide were adding several more ultrabook designs to their product range.
Dell XPS, HP Spectre and Toshiba Portege were a number of new models added in addition to the 26 which were already on sale. Emmett went on to say that other manufacturers "Fujitsu, Gigabyte, Lenovo and Acer among many others" were joining Intel's ultrabook initiative with models to arrive this year.
Most of the 75 new models will doubtless arrive with the launch of Intel's latest Ivy Bridge, due at the end of the month. Coincidentally the same month as Intel unleashes a barrage of 'epic cinematic' advertising.
The chip giant also says that models priced as low as US$699 will also appear. That'll probably translate to around £549 by our estimation.

Infra-red inclusion to attract rapid rise of second-screen users.
The dual-core powered Galaxy Tab 2 follows the original launch of the Samsung Galaxy Tab two years ago.
The device will come in seven and 10.1-inch options in order to dent the sales of respective best-sellers the Kindle Fire and iPad.
Additionally, both Tabs will include infra-red so they can be used as universal remotes, which appears to be a nod to the current second-screen trend among mobile device owners.
Tim Baxter, president, Samsung Electronics America, said: "These new Galaxy Tab 2 and Galaxy Player devices deliver what consumers have come to expect from all Samsung products - exceptional design, impressive connectivity options and a selection of choices for each type of person and user scenario," said "A one size fits all solution is just not sufficient."
The Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 has a RRP of $249.99, while the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 will be priced at $399.99 with respective release dates of April 22nd and May 4th.

"It's definitely something that's a work in progress," Elastic Games lead game designer James Wearing admits. He's talking about the name of the product his newly formed team is pitching to Kickstarter users, a first-person shooter called 'Police Warfare.' The name is more descriptive than it is memorable.
"There were definitely a lot of comments where people said it was the worst name they ever heard." But the name of the product is on a short list of post-development things to take care of.
Right now, the focus at Elastic Games is to use the goodwill built up by Police Warfare's original pitch, which was labeled as a fan-made concept for the future of Call of Duty in February, and turn it into funding for an actual product via the crowd power of Kickstarter.

Fight My Monster has become the UK’s fastest-growing online game for boys after reaching 1m players.
The Moshi Monsters rival launched in 2011 and has gone on to achieve an average game session time of 40 minutes per player. The company claims this is almost twice as long as a user spends on Facebook in the UK.
Fight My Monster also received $2.1m in funding last month from a seed round led by Greycroft Partners. Investors include eVenture Capital Partners, Riot Games chairman Jarl Mohn, former PlayStation Europe man Chris Deering, Take-Two’s Jeff Lapin, Playdemic’s Josh Resnick and YouTube’s Kevin Donahue.
Fight My Monster CEO Dominic Williams said: “It’s a huge milestone for Fight My Monster and we can’t wait to start rolling out some of the new features we’ve got planned. Because we’re an online platform, we’ve got so many more opportunities than a traditional trading card community.”
Chairman Dylan Collins added: “Our community growth and engagement shows just how powerful this demographic is in creating new brands. Fight My Monster has just exploded from the playgrounds and it really is the product of that under-12 community.”
Fight My Monster also has a partnership in place with BrownBag Films to produce a TV series based on the franchise.
The online trading card game is accessed predominantly by kids in the UK and the US.

EA has confirmed reports that Crysis 3 is in the works, with an official reveal set for the other side of the weekend.
"The best kept secret in shooters just can't be contained. Stay tuned for more information on April 16th," the publisher told Joystiq.
No more details than that for now, but rumour has it the game will be out sometime in Spring 2013, and takes place in a portrayal of New York overgrown by jungle vegetation.
Definitely want to have your eyes peeled on Monday if you’re into those next-gen shooter thingies.

Thomas Claburn at Information Week opines that Google's Chrome OS is actually morphing into the Windows-style os that it intended to make obsolete. There's still room to grow, and here are his suggestions for how to make it better: Get better hardware, Include a Web-based IDE, Support local storage, Allow offline apps. 'When Chrome OS was launched in 2010, Google SVP of Chrome and apps Sundar Pichai declared, "Chrome OS is nothing but the Web." Now, if you peer behind the browser pane, it's clear that Chrome OS is looking beyond the Web. It's not a complete repudiation of Google's bet on the appeal of a thin-client system that keeps user data in the cloud. But it is a concession to the realities of a market that's more comfortable with the familiar desktop metaphor.

Media giant to release content on mobile and web; First title release in summer
BBC Worldwide has invested in a HTML5 development platform created by Spaceport.io in the latest funding round for the social games tech company.
Its HTML5 and Flash tool allows users to release apps to be released simultaneously across mobile and web platforms.
The money from backers, which also includes US games incubator YouWeb, is to go towards hiring new staff at Spaceport.io and developing its platform’s HTML5 and Flash compatible performance.
The first project from BBC Worldwide using Spaceport.io is set to release this summer.
“Spaceport is the leading HTML5 game development platform for creating high-performance game applications,” said BBC Worldwide games EVP Robert Nashak.

Movie tie-in to include social features such as friend lists and leaderboards
German free-to-play publisher Bigpoint has partnered with Twentieth Century Fox to develop a new social browser game.
Ice Age Online, which will tie in with the movie franchise, will see users take control of their own sloth and rescue lost animals to build up their own camp.
The game will also include friend lists, leaderboards and the opportunity to compete in a number of challenges with other users.
The free-to-play social title, developed through the Unity engine, is set to release alongside its film counterpart Ice Age: Continental Draft in July.
“We’re excited to work with one of the most successful film franchises of all time,” said Bigpoint CEO Heiko Hubertz.

April 12th, 2012, 22:21 Posted By: wraggster
Google has rolled out a surprise major redesign of the internet giant's Google+ social networking service, welcoming users with a interactive tour of the new interface.
Announcing a "more functional and flexible version of Google+" that has so far attracted 170 million people, Google said it was "still early days" for the social network. The company described the redesign as part of efforts to create a "simpler, more beautiful Google."
The design is certainly more pretty than Google's trademark bland but functional design. The major change involves a ribbon of applications on the left side where each application can be dragged to a position the user wants.
One use niche that Google+ has excelled at is in attracting photographers. One recent initiative for a collaborative 'photo walk' in Australia has been called the largest collaborative photo shoot in history. The new Google+ design introduces larger images.
Another core change is a renewed focus on Twitter-like 'trending' hashtags and the presentation of an instant messenger bar down the right side. The new design also puts Google+ Hangout live video invitations front and centre.
"By highlighting all the hangouts you can join, all over the world, it’s now easier to spend time together—even be there for each other," said Google engineering chief Vic Gundotra.
The new design hasn't been a universal success, however, with a number of users peeved about the introduction of whitespace between the left-side content and the right-side contacts bar. Google will be unlikely to miss such feedback given that #whitespace is currently a top five trending hashtag.
Fortunately there's a simple Chrome extension to resize the content stream to remove the whitespace although we'd hazard that it will be obsolete very soon.

Orange and UEFA reveal official footy app as we all look forward to England's unsuccessful campaign.
The free app includes all the expected info and news features but has been pimped with some of the more advanced stuff today's app users expected.
Thus there's a mobile fan kit, including "Photo Fun" which lets users digitally apply face paint to a photo and share it with friends, as well as geolocation functionality and augmented reality maps to find friends at matches.
Fans visiting Poland and Ukraine can also also use the built-in travel information to learnmore about the cities they're visiting, information about the stadiums, get travel information, and find the official UEFA Fan Zones.
Interestingly, a planned update will include an in-app purchasing option for downloading video highlights.

It's been a long and winding road for the tongue-twisting Asus Eee Pad MeMo ME171, and though we did get a first-hand look back at CES it's finally available to call your own. The team over at Netbook Newsdecided to take the 7", 1280 x 800 display totin', 1.2GHz Snapdragon powered slab and give a good benchmarking -- which always piques our interest. NenaMark and NenaMark 2 landed at 34.5- and 24-fps respectively. Quadrant, on the other hand, came in around the 1,800 mark, about the same as the Transformer TF101. If you're more into Antutu or Vellamo, then the numbers you are after are 4,377 and 975 (compared to the Transformer Prime's 953). Last in the list was SunSpider, which drops in at 2,546.5 -- a nose ahead of the Note's 2,902. Check the video after the break if you want the full unboxing.

The Game of Thrones action RPG will hit UK shelves this June and be supplied to retailers by Koch Media.
It’s based on the hugely successful ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ novels written by George R.R. Martin, which have sold over 15m copies worldwide. These spawned the hit TV show Game of Thrones which has just entered its second season on Sky Atlantic.
The upcoming Xbox 360, PS3 and PC game offers fans and players a brand new storyline which has been developed with creative input from Martin himself. It’s also powered by the popular Unreal Engine 3.
Gamers can take control of Sworn Brother of the Night’s Watch, Mors, or a Red Priest called Alester. They can visit familiar locations from the books such as King’s Landing and The Wall, as well as encounter key characters including Queen Cersei and the Night Watch’s Lord Commander Jeor Mormont.
Players can choose a class and fighting style before taking part in battles, acquiring new weapons and enhancing their abilities.
The Game of Thrones RPG is in development at Cyanide Studio and will be published by Focus Home Interactive.
Ubisoft released a Game of Thrones strategy game last year. An MMO is also in the works.

Don't look now, but Google has officially revealed their intentions to go after Windows and OS X. Chrome OS 19 has arrived for Samsung Series 5 and Acer AC700 Chromebooks running the developer channel, and the changes it brings may shock you. The newAura window manager has landed, bringing with it a number of features that you'd expect from a traditional OS. For starters, there’s the Shelf along the bottom of the screen. It’s set to hide when you’ve got a browser window maximized by default, but you can choose to have it always on top or auto-hide, too, just like the Windows taskbar or OS X dock

Leaked EA Origin advert suggests new title will not appear on Steam
Frankfurt headquartered studio Crytek is building the third instalment of its blockbuster Crysis series, a growing body of online evidence has shown.
A leaked, and now deleted, advert promoting the game would suggest that EA Origin has publishing rights for the PC edition – likely meaning the title will not appear on Valve’s Steam.
Crysis 2 was removed from the Steam portal after an alleged dispute between EA and Valve over DLC royalties and rights.
EA, which publishes Crysis games through its Partners programme, proceeded to exclude its PC titles from Steam.
The situation is complicated further because EA Partners games are not typically banned from Steam because they do not belong to EA. Crysis has been the only exception to this rule, thouh the precise reason is unclear.

Social network titan integrates cloud gaming technology
Cloud gaming vendor Gaikai is now streaming select titles through its new Facebook app, the company has confirmed.
The Facebook application, currently in beta, will be the first serious test of whether triple-A games can exist and thrive on the social games platform.
Social gaming has fast become an industry phenomenon and the most successful games on Facebook so far have been more carefree and casual strategy games.
Gaikai will provide free high-end, console-quality game demos to Facebook through its video streaming technologies. Games are controlled on remote servers that feed gameplay video to an array of devices.
The Facebook Gaikai app is exclusively available in North America and Europe, which means it will be theoretically available to about 500 million of the social network’s user base, providing they each have an impressive internet connection and are viewing Facebook through a desktop device.

Market analysts Gartner forecast that tablet PCs would sell 118.9 million units in 2012, a 98 per cent increase over 2011, while the firm also said that the iPad would still have the lion's share of the market up to 2016.
Gartner reckon that the iPad will snap up 61.4 per cent of the entire tablet pie "despite the arrival of Microsoft-based devices to this market," they said.
"As vendors struggled to compete on price and differentiate enough on either the hardware or ecosystem, inventories were built and only 60 million units actually reached the hands of consumers across the world," said Gartner research chief Carolina Milanesi.
Gartner said that rival tablet makers had waited for Apple to forge the way given the lack of announcements of new tablets at CES and Mobile World Congress.
"Many vendors will wait for Windows 8 to be ready and will try to enter the market with a dual-platform approach, hoping that the Microsoft brand could help them in both the enterprise and consumer markets," said Milanesi.
Microsoft will only be able to snap up 4 per cent of the market once Windows 8 arrives later in the year and Gartner's crystal ball suggests that Windows 8 tablets will account for 11.8 per cent of sales by the end of 2016.
The analysts reckon even those sales are down to the enterprise appeal, describing Microsoft's efforts as a "strong IT-supplied offering more so than an OS with a strong consumer appeal."

Intel announced a ruggedised 7-inch tablet designed aimed at the education market called the Studybook tablet, based on either Windows 7 or Android Honeycomb.
The chip giant's Learning series already offers desktop PCs in the form of the classmate but the Studybook is the first tablet design the firm is promoting for classroom use. Described as "ultra rugged" and bundled with specialised education software, the device is based on Intel's Atom Z650 processor.
Intel produced a reference design which is built out of a plastic unibody and incorporates screen shock absorbers in case students decide to play frisbee with the tablet rather than doing their homework. The Studybook is also water and dust resistant.
The software includes classroom management applications, LabCam application and an e-reader and an optimized e-reader. Intel said the classroom software offers a user-friendly interface that "enables teachers and students to collaborate in the classroom for improved learning efficiency."
More than 7 million students are using Intel classmate PCs worldwide, Intel said. The Intel Studybook will off students " limitless opportunities to enhance their learning experience," the company said.
Intel is also offer a "Learning Series Teacher PC" specification which just happens to be dead handy for ultrabooks. The company is making the specs available so manufacturers can get in on the education market.
