Free-to-play mech game receives $10m in funding
Meteor Entertainment has raised $10 million in funding for free-to-play online mech-'em-up Hawken.
Meteor's subsidiary studio, Adhesive Games, is currently developing Hawken for release on 12 December, 2012.
Backers include Benchmark Capital and Firstmark Capital, both early funders of the free-to-play blockbuster League of Legends.
“We are seeing the rise of the direct-to-consumer model, where all is downloadable and free-to-play,” Rick Heitzmann, founder and managing director of FirstMark Capital, toldVentureBeat.
“You can disrupt the business with a free-to-play title. Gamers are willing to pay via virtual goods to do that. League of Legends is a fantastic title, but it is just one game and one genre that has blown up. We think it’s possible to produce very high quality games that have huge audiences that are willing to pay.”

Ten-inch hi-def MediaPad device "excels in all entertainment capabilities."
Continuing its assault on the high-end market, China's Huawei has unveiled what it claims to be the 'world's first quad-core tablet'.
The Huawei MediaPad 10 FHD runs off of K3 quad-core 1.5GHz processors and Android Ice Cream Sandwich, boasting a 10-inch IPS HD screen.
Additionally, the device includes wireless connectivity up to 84Mbps, LTE support, an 8MP rear-facing camera and 1.3MP front-facing camera with in-built memory of 2GB.
Richard Yu, chairman of Huawei Device says: "We have created the Huawei MediaPad 10 FHD to excel in all of the entertainment capabilities including speed, power, web-browsing, high definition display and audio, and packaging it all in a compact and portable body."
The MediaPad 10 follows Huawei's S7, S7 Slim and MediaPad tablets, and is expected to be released in Q2 2012 along with fellow quad-core device, the Huawei Ascend D quad smartphone.

With the PC being this author’s main gaming platform for nearly 20 years, it would be unsurprising to see a return to the digital archiving of PC Player. As this author has mentioned previously, the magazine was vastly underrated with superb content and design, so hopefully, people everywhere can now see what was so great about the magazine.
With issue 2 of PC Player, we have one of the best in terms of content: multi-page reviews of Sam & Max Hit the Road, Frontier: Elite II, Star Trek: Judgment Rites, a profile of Westwood Studios, a feature on point-and-click adventures and much more. The first four articles mentioned there were so outstanding we’ve chosen them as online preview material for the website.
Of course, the full release of PC Player issue 2 can be downloaded in its entirety in iDevice, Tablet or Max-Rez editions – a version to suit all your reading needs. The PC Player issue 2 catalogue page can be found at Out-of-Print Archive. Enjoy the PC gaming nostalgicness.

NCsoft has revealed its MMO Aion: The Tower of Eternity will be flipping the switch to go free-to-play across Europe next Tuesday, February 28th.
The changes will take place in English, German and French at the same time on Tuesday; this on the heels of what's being called a successful beta by European distributor Gameforge AG.
The entire game will be open to any and all, but there will be restrictions for non-paying players such as trading, chatting, longer cool-downs on instances, lower payouts for quests, and a few other limitations.
Current subscribers will receive currency vouchers at the value of six Aion Coins per day left on the account. That’s the in-game currency everyone else will receive by paying for premium content.
Previous subscribers – anyone who had a subscription at any point since the title's official launch – will receive “Veteran Status”, which raises the number of character slots from two to eight, offers unlimited chat, unlimited trade, private shopping, and more.
There is also a premium 'Gold Status', which still carries a monthly subscription fee. Players going this route get massively shorter cooldowns on the majority of instances, 20 per cent more AP and medals, more Courage Insignias, and other benefits.
No word yet on when North American players can expect the switch, but there's plenty more info on the many changes and additions available over on the new Aion free to play website.

SOE has announced the free-to-play launch of their long-standing MMO EverQuest will kick off on March 15th.
As our own Ben Parfitt reported earlier this month, the launch coincides with the 13th anniversary of the game's original launch, and plans are to introduce a number of new payment options.
"Anyone who wishes to start, return or continue to play one of the 'Best Games of All-Time' can simply download and play EverQuest on their terms," Producer Thom Terrazaz discusses in a letter to players on the EverQuest site. "Think of it as Free to Play, Your Way."
Terrazaz also touches on player engagement, and bringing in fresh numbers to energize and expand the game's community.
"With the gaming landscape changing every day, we want to ensure we continue to evolve the game to keep players engaged and bring in even more new players to further expand the community. With no up-front costs or required membership, we might see a new player or two along the way, and more people is always a good thing!"
EverQuest II went the F2P method back in 2010, and saw a large spike in player numbers based off that decision.

An anonymous reader writes with word of the release earlier this week, after eight months of development, of DragonFly BSD 3.0. The release includes improved scalability through finer-grained locking, improvements to the HAMMER file system in low-memory configurations, and a TrueCrypt-compatible disk encryption system. DragonFly is an installable system, but it can also be run live from CD, DVD, or USB key.

You can forget all the talk about 'smart' and 'connected' TVs: nobody, not even Apple, has come up with an interface that's easy to use from 10 feet away. And you can drastically curtail your hopes that Roku, Boxee, Netflix, and other providers of free or cheap 'over the top' Internet TV service will take over the world: the cable and satellite companies and the content owners have mounted savvy and effective counterstrikes. But there's another technology that really will disrupt the TV industry: tablet computing. The iPad, in particular, is the first 'second screen' device that's good enough to be the first screen. This Xconomy column argues that in the near future, the big-screen TV will turn into a dumb terminal, and your tablet — with its easy-to-use touch interface and its 'appified' approach to organizing content — will literally be running the show in your living room."Using a tablet as a giant remote seems like a good idea, and a natural extension of iPhone and Android apps that already provide media-center control. Maybe I'm too easily satisfied, but the 10-foot interface doesn't seem as hopeless as presented here; TiVo, Apple, and others been doing a pretty good job of that for the past decade.

While one-fifth give mobile phones the cold shoulder.
Despite smartphones being used by 50 per cent of Brits and mobile devices accounting for 15 per cent of all online traffic, the UK's largest retailers are ignoring the market, according to mobile marketing agency Somo.
The firm examined the country's top 100 brands and found three-quarters don't support tablet users, while 20 per cent don't have smartphone platforms.
Specifically, just 26 per cent of the most popular online stores have an iPad app, while under a fifth have created Android tablet apps, and just ten per cent have a tablet-optimsed website.
The report says that big names such as PC World, Thomson and BHS are among the top 20 firms without any tablet or smartphone apps or websites, while just 57 per cent have a site that functions on mobile.
Additionally, the key consumer gripe was a lack of payment solution for apps and mobile sites.

World of Warcraft developer to continue experimenting with monetisation models
Blizzard Entertainment is the next major games studio to embrace free-to-play and will apply the model in an upcoming, as yet unannounced game, Develop understands.
Following some eight years of success with its trailblazing MMO World of Warcraft, it is said that the California studio will expand business opportunities and create both subscription and freemium titles.
A Develop source connected to the matter did not provide further details on Blizzard’s free-to-play game project. The studio is widely known to be working on the so-called ‘Project Titan’, and is finalising the Diablo 3 for launch, though it has capacity for multiple projects.
A Blizzard spokesperson has declined to comment.
The move could be seen as a distinct change of strategy for Blizzard, given Warcraft’s millions of paying users. However, despite a dramatic loss in WoW subscribers over the past year, Blizzard has stabilised its user numbers with aggressive marketing operations and – crucially – free-to-play deals.

While 42 per cent prefer to use laptop or PC.
Website developer Basekit.com says tablet adoption is growing in the UK, but while the devices are replacing the use of PCs and laptops, just four per cent shop online via their tablet, with 76 per cent of tablet shoppers using an iPad.
Additionally, the iPad is almost as popular as a desktop Mac for online shopping, with 3.3 per cent and 3.7 per cent, respectively.
PCs prevail for online shopping with 42 per cent of Brits using a Windows-based desktop, while another 42 per cent use a Windows-based laptop, according to the report.
Mobiles seem to be even less popular for shopping with just two per cent of users shopping via their phone, and the iPhone accounting for 66 per cent of mobile-shoppers.
Further results show over twice as many men shop via tablet or mobile than women, despite spending 12 per cent less time shopping. Men are also the UK’s biggest spenders as well with an average online spend of £127.93 compared to £105.42 for women.

Joystiq can exclusively reveal that the next Metal Gear Solid will feature intense zero-gravity chess, cybernetic nano-crocodiles, mirror universe machinations and a trash-compactor escape scene that will serve both as Star Wars homage and finger-wagging sermon on humanity's crushing impact on the environment. Well, provided the Joystiq staff are hired to work on the game.
Kojima Productions has unveiled anextensive list of available jobs, hinged on evolving the in-development Fox Engine and, more importantly, bringing the next game in the Byzantine franchise to life. According to the page introduction, Hideo Kojima and co. are on the hunt for engineers, artists, designers and a brand manager to handle "the latest Metal Gear Solid targeted for high-end consoles and PC."
If you think you can bolster the Fox Engine with new rendering tech, create "fantastic game content," or cultivate MGS "as a global mega-hit franchise in all regions," you should swing by the Game Developers Conference Career Pavilion between March 6 and March 9 and make yourself known.
We might nudge you out of the way as we deliver our own game concept, which we're tentatively calling "Metal 6ear Solid: Sublimation Synthesis." Don't you just love the sound of that, Kojima?

So far, 300,000 have played Tribes: Ascend in its closed beta state, Hi-Rez Studios COO Todd Harris revealed. But Hi-Rez wants more players and this Friday, the Tribes: Ascend beta will be open to all.
Before the launch of the open beta, Hi-Rez will add some additional maps and customization options to Tribes: Ascend, plus a new game mode: Arena Deathmatch. These will all be added in a patch coming, well, before Friday, we guess. Hi-Rez hasn't really said when the patch will be live.
If you're worried about player progress, don't sweat it. Your progress and unlocks will carry over to the open beta.

Tiny Tower gets a new mission every Wednesday, and they're usually simple, themed tasks which players must complete for bonus Tower Bux, the game's currency. This week, a mission called "Beware of Dog" takes a shot at Zynga's clone, Dream Heights.
"After failing to buy your tower, a rival developer would like the following: 13,500 Tower Design (Architect Office) and 4,500 City Sim (Game Studio)." The icon for the individual awarding the mission is a little man dressed as a devil.
We took a screen shot of the "Beware of Dog" mission. You can see it in full past the break.

Linux may no longer be getting any more fresh Air, but it's going to get a heaping helping of Flash thanks to a partnership between Adobe and Google. You see, Adobe the pair has been developing a new browser API to work with Flash, code-named "Pepper," to provide Flash Player 11.2 in Chrome on any x86/64 platform -- including Linux. From now on, Linux users will get new versions of Flash Player directly through the Pepper API in Chrome (as opposed to a download from Adobe), but Adobe promises to provide security updates for five years after its release. Don't believe us? Get the good news direct from Adobe at the source below.
Update: To be clear, while this will keep Flash updated in Chrome, it's uncertain what this means for other browsers like Firefox, Konqueror and Midori.

New submitter egparedes points out a post dissecting webOS and highlighting the things it did right, in the hopes that developers for other mobile operating systems will use them as inspiration. Quoting:"webOS isn't quite dead yet. It's just being open-sourced, which, when it happens to commercial software, often turns out to be the digital equivalent of being reanimated as a walking corpse in a George Romero movie. ... Of course, it's not assured that this is the end of webOS. Maybe open-sourcing it will be the best thing that ever happened to webOS. But maybe it just means that HP doesn't care anymore, and that webOS won't receive much attention anymore. This would be unfortunate, because webOS is one of the few current mobile operating systems that are actually a joy to use. It's been hurt by HP's incompetent management, rather than any egregious faults of its own. The least we can do now is to keep its best ideas alive, even if webOS itself won't make it."

On February 21st, The Blackberry Playbook finally received its long-promised overhaul. Called Playbook OS 2.0, this major upgrade provides native email and calendaring apps, limited support for Android applications (the developer has to repackage the app for the Playbook), and a bunch of other features. There are some fairly positive initial reviews, although one can no doubt expect a lot of too-little-too-late naysaying from various quarters as well. The Globe and Mail article also contains this somewhat interesting note: '...until RIM began deep discounting ... the device languished way behind rivals such as the iPad in terms of market share. One recent report by Toronto-based Solutions Research Group, however, pegs RIM's share of the tablet market at around 15 per cent, a big jump after discounting over the holiday buying season.'"ZDNet has some screenshots of the new features, and El Reg has a piece on an interesting bit of the new software.
