Adobe, which has spent the last few years trying to dig out of a deep hole of vulnerabilities and buggy code, is making a major change to Flash, adding a sandbox to the version of the player that runs in Firefox. The sandbox is designed to prevent many common exploit techniques against Flash. The move by Adobe comes roughly a year after the company added a sandbox to Flash for Google Chrome. Flash, which is perhaps the most widely deployed piece of software on the Internet, has been a common attack vector for several years now, and the attacks in some cases have been used to get around exploit mitigations added by the browser vendors. The sandbox is designed to prevent many of these attacks by not allowing exploits against Flash to break out into the browser itself.

There's a new tablet in town called the Spark. The Linux-driven tablet, based on the Zenithink C71 and KDE was unveiled by developer Aaron Seigo recently. The tablet will be available for pre-order this week and will start shipping worldwide in May. In terms of specifications, the 7-inch (800x480) multi-touch slate will run a 1GHz AMLogic ARM processor and Mali-400 GPU, sport 512MB of RAM, 4GB of internal storage (with a microSD slot for expandability), 802/11b/g WiFi, a pair of USB ports, a front-facing 1.3MP webcam, and an audio jack. The UI of choice is Plasma Active and there will apparently be a content store where developers can peddle their wares and users can snag software.

A Taiwanese man that died while playing World of Warcraft in an internet cafe went apparently unnoticed by fellow gamers for 13 hours.
Chen Jung-yu, the Taipei Times reported, had purchased 23 hours of World of Warcraft time but seemingly died of unspecified causes 10 hours into his gaming session. The internet cafe clerk raised the alarm when he went to remind Chen that his time was up.
The clerk said that he "saw that his face was blackened and that he was sitting rigidly in the sofa chair" prompting him to call the police. A crime scene photo shows that Chen's hands were locked as if still on the keyboard.
Only when police began forensic investigations were the other ten players in the cafe aware that anything was amiss.
The officers were quite rightly surprised when "most either stayed in front of their computers and kept on gaming or took little interest."

Several articles are noting that the German IT security agency BSI is endorsing Google Chrome browser: 'BSI ticked off Chrome's anti-exploit sandbox technology, which isolates the browser from the operating system and the rest of the computer; its silent update mechanism and Chrome's habit of bundling Adobe Flash, as its reasons for the recommendation. ... BSI also recommended Adobe Reader X — the version of the popular PDF reader that, like Chrome, relies on a sandbox to protect users from exploits — and urged citizens to use Windows' Auto Update feature to keep their PCs abreast of all OS security fixes. To update applications, BSI gave a nod to Secunia's Personal Software Inspector, a free utility that scan a computer for outdated software and point users to appropriate downloads.

So this is how Cannon Fodder 3 turned out.Trailers for the game show an... interesting take on the much-loved retro strategy series. One is below.Eurogamer reported on Cannon Fodder 3, from unknown Russian developer GFI, in January 2011.At the time Codemasters, which licensed the Cannon Fodder IP to GFI for a one-title project in 2008, distanced itself from from the game, confirming it was only set for release in Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).Now we know how it turned out, thanks to internet super sleuth Superannuation, who spotted a video that includes a link to download the demo - if you dare.Jon Hare, creator of Cannon Fodder, has nothing to do with it. The blurb tells of an evil military alliance by Europe, Asia and Africa that you must stop.Russian developer GFI, founded 2003, has previously worked on The Precursors, White Gold, Warfare: Reloaded and Who Said Meow?.Cannon Fodder 3 launched in Russia in December 2011.

Several of Ubisoft's biggest titles won't be playable as of next week thanks to a server move by the publisher and the restrictive DRM that was used in their development. This isn't just multiplayer either. Because Ubisoft thought it would be a smart plan to use always on DRM for even the single player portion of games like Assassin's Creed, even the single player portion of that title won't be playable during the server move. Some of the other games affected by this move will be Tom Clancy's HAWX 2, Might & Magic: Heroes 6 and The Settlers 7. The Mac games that will be broken during this period are Assassin's Creed, Splinter Cell Conviction and The Settlers. This move was announced this week as part of a community letter, with Ubisoft describing how the data servers for many of the publisher's online services would be migrated from third party facilities to a new location starting on the 7th February. The publisher didn't reveal how long the transfer would take.

Chipzilla has long been atop the PC chip manufacturing mountain, with AMD running a rather distant second. That's why AMD's new top man, Rory Read, plans to move the company in a more mobile direction. Speaking at the company's analyst day, Read stated that the chipmaker will focus on outflanking Intel in the tablet space and by growing its business in cloud computing and emerging markets like China (read: entry-level PCs and devices). As to whether AMD would venture into the smartphone space, Read was quite clear in stating that there were no plans to do so. But, he did make mention of being flexible when it came to chip architecture, including using 3rd party IP in developing new silicon -- so a switch to ARM may not be out of the question. How will AMD accomplish its new goals? By focusing on execution of its technology rather than trying to be on the bleeding edge -- sound familiar?

It's official: The Mortal Kombat: Arcade Kollection does exist on PC, despite vehement, confusing statements from series creator Ed Boon to the contrary.Mortal Kombat: Arcade Kollection is available now on Steam, currently at 15 percent off, or $8.49.
The Kollection includes arcade classics Mortal Kombat, Mortal Kombat 2 andUltimate Mortal Kombat 3, with all the conveniences of modern PC gaming, which unfortunately means it comes without the kabinets.

Bossa head and co-founder Henrique Olifiers has shared his frustrations at the iterative nature of social game design, and warned of the consequences.
"Social games for me were always on the cutting-edge until they became copycat, and after they became copycat I said, 'Well, this is not going anywhere,'" he told GamesIndustry.biz in an exclusive interview.
"This will be like the Atari Eighties crash. Everybody and their grandmother had a version of Space Invaders, and these guys are going to do the same thing."
He fears that these tactics will mean more innovative games and ideas will get lost amid Facebook's casual noise.
"What I used to do at both Jagex and Playfish, they both felt like they were doing something different," he continued.
"Jagex was one of the first companies in browser MMOs. Playfish was one of the first companies to go into social games. They were leading the charge. What got me so disenchanted over time was that they stopped doing that. "That's when I said, 'This is not what I'm about.' "
Bossa Studios was founded in 2010 and created its first title, the RTS Monstermind, with more hardcore gamers in mind and in a concerted attempted to avoid the copying and churning culture of standard Facebook development.
"[Our games] should look and feel like nothing else on Facebook," explained lead designer Mike Bithell.
"We're working really hard top use these amazing tools, because there are so many things in Facebook that, if used right, make it better than Xbox Live."
To read more about the Bossa team's refreshing stance on social gaming, its recent hires and how it hopes to attract the hardcore gamers to Facebook, check out the full feature.

"Now it's game on for businesses to show us what they can do with this technology - once they have Kinect for Windows hardware and have installed the SDK, they're free to innovate away. Just how we like it."
The recommended retail price for the unit itself is $249, with a discounted $149 price available to education bodies later in the year. The SDK is available free of charge.
"Companies such as United Health Group, American Express, Mattel, Telefonica, and Toyota that already are developing applications with Kinect for Windows - and more than 300 companies from over 25 countries are busy dreaming, inventing and building."

Konami is to officially unveil Dance Dance Revolution Classroom Edition, which allows 48 dance mats to be connected to a single PC, later this month.
The game will be shown for the first time at the California Association For Health, Physical Education, Recreation And Dance (CAHPERD) State Conference in Pasadena.
Konami has been using DDR in classrooms in a bid to combat child obesity - the proportion of overweight US children has tripled in the last 30 years - since 2006. Last July, the publisher hosted a state-wide tournament at the West Virginia Childhood Obesity Summit.

Merely six weeks after release, Bioware game Star Wars: The Old Republic has sold over two million copies, with a user-base of 1.7 million active subscribers.
EA is said to have spent more money on SW:TOR than any other game in its history, so many have been waiting to see if it's headed to failure or success. While these numbers are a step in the right direction, EA will be hoping to seriously build on those subscribers to make their money back.Selling the game in the first place isn't even half of the battle. The key to any MMO's success is that its players keep coming back for more - harder to achieve than it sounds, especially now that so many games are free-to-play.
In the meantime, EA and Bioware are both shouting about its current success, claiming it as the fastest growing subscription MMO ever.
"We're truly honored and humbled by the incredibly strong support from our players who are enjoying Star Wars: The Old Republic," said Dr. Ray Muzyka, co-founder of BioWare and general manager of EA's BioWare label. "Our entire team worked very hard over the holidays to deliver a smooth experience at launch, and the resulting response to the game from our fans and critics has been exceptionally gratifying."
Dr. Greg Zeschuk, co-founder of BioWare and general manager of the BioWare MMO Business Unit, commented: "But we're not resting. We're actively listening to our community for ongoing feedback to help us ensure the game and service continue to improve, and we're working to deliver spectacular new high quality content on a regular cadence going forward."
The Force is strong in this one. For now, at least...

Electronic Arts has revealed that its digital games service Origin generated $100 million in the 2011 calendar year, from more than 9.3 million consumers.
Releasing its third quarter financial results, the company also said that MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic has more than 1.7 million active subscribers since launching in December, with 2 million units sold.
The company managed to trim its losses for the quarter down from $322 million in 2010 to $205 million. Net sales were $1.061 billion, compared to $1.053 billion the previous year.
Battlefield 3 and FIFA 12 have both sold more than 10 million units, while Madden NFL 12 has sold almost 5 million units life-to-date. The publisher claims it is number one in the Western markets with a 20 per cent share of Europe and 17 per cent share of North America.
"We are pleased to report a strong holiday quarter driven by Battlefield 3, FIFA 12 and a strong showing by our digital games and services," offered CEO John Riccitiello. "Star Wars: The Old Republic is developing a committed community of players with more than 1.7 million active subscribers and growing."
PopCap, which joined the company in August, has grown sales by 30 per cent on a twelve-month basis and the EA Nucleus registration system has more than 168 million consumers on its database.
"We recorded our highest operating cash flow in 31 quarters and grew segment share in both Europe and North America," said Eric Brown, CFO.
"Third quarter non-GAAP digital revenue grew 79 per cent year-over year, and we achieved our goal of generating over $1 billion in non-GAAP digital revenue on a trailing-twelve-month basis."
EA said that revenues for the fourth quarter are expected to be between $925 million and $975 million.

Capcom has announced a social game based on its massively popular action series Monster Hunter.
Andriasang reports that the game, Minna To Monhan Card Master(Monster Hunter With Everyone Card Master) is a card battle game, developed by Gloops, and will be released on February 21 on the Mobage network.
The publisher's expansion into social games is being spearheaded by Street Fighter IV producer Yoshinori Ono. In November, he explained: "Capcom has decided to look at the social game field from the scope of the entire company.
"Instead of framing it in its own section like consoles or mobile games, it's something that all of Capcom development is involved with … We're seeking to use the titles and content we've cultivated up to now to knock on the door of social gaming."

Trion Worlds has launched Rift Lite, giving players free access to the MMOG up to level 20, with no restrictions on playtime.
The launch coincides with the release of the latest Rift update, version 1.7, which adds weddings, new and tweaked dungeons, PvP improvements and more; for the full list, follow the source link below.
Scott Hartsman, Trion's CCO and executive producer on Rift, said: "In the past ten months, Rift has evolved at a breakneck pace, through seven massive updates that set new expectations for live MMOGs in features, in content, and in service.
"We think a Lite edition with no time limit is the best way for players to see what an amazing experience Rift continues to be."
Trion, based in California, last month raised $85 million from investors to fund development of two new projects and Red Door, an "end-to-end" platform serving consumers, developers and publishers alike. Buoyed by Rift's success - it reached a million players within four months of launch, and brought in $100 in revenue from the US and Europe alone in 2011 - CEO Lars Buttler said last year that a stock market IPO was "definitely on our horizon."

Microsoft has released Kinect for Windows, featuring a new "near mode" that lets the gesture control tech be used as close as 40cm. The Kinect for Windows hardware will retail at $249 — well above the price of the version for Xbox 360 consoles. Microsoft defended the price difference, saying sales of games and Xbox Live subscriptions help subsidize the console version. The new version will support Windows 7 and the Windows 8 developer preview, as well as Windows Embedded 7 devices

Examine the 2012 London event and those from yesteryear with AR.
Smartphone AR and QR solutions firm ARworks has created the app ahead of the summer's Olympic games, which will take place in London, UK.
It comes as part of the Junaio AR browser, which uses image recognition to provide users with additional info and interactive functions.
Now, ARworks has developed a 2012 Olympics 'channel' which is available via the Junaio app. Users are able to peruse venues of the 2012 tournament through a series of pictures and stats.
Additionally, Olympic venues from 1896 including Athens, Sydney and so on can all be browsed along with the tracking of the Olympic Flame's location, which begins on May 19th.
The app also uses a GPS function to provide users with the distance and location of the venue that they're browsing too.

Apple has 'stormed past' former PC number one HP to become the world's largest producer of PCs. Assuming that tablet devices are counted as PCs.
Market analysis outfit Canalys has decided that tablets, or 'pads' as they call them, are actually PCs and that means they counted Apple's 15 million iPads to come up with the claim.
Canalys pointed out that HP was "pursuing a Windows strategy" for tablets, focusing on the enterprise market until the arrival of Windows 8. Alluding to the importance of the consumer market to HP and Windows 8 tablets in general, Canalys said that "questions remain" over the consumer prospects for Windows 8 tablets.
"Microsoft must focus its efforts on creating an intuitive user experience that is far less resource intensive," said Canalys Analyst Tim Coulling.
Canalys was also not of the opinion that ultrabooks would be the great white knight for the PC market, at least not in the first half of the year.
We expect ultrabook volumes to see limited adoption through the first half of 2012, before finally gaining momentum later in the year as price points decline and Intel launches a new line of processors and embarks on an aggressive marketing campaign," said Canalys Research Analyst Michael Kauh.
Canalys reckons that PC vendors in the netbook and notebook space (are there any netbooks left?) will feel the pinch, particularly as Apple moves to launch the next generation of iPad.
For what it's worth, we reckon it's a PC if you have complete control over the software on it. Not like an iPad but then... that's quite like an Android tablet isn't it? Oh dear.
