Europe 'most interesting region' in terms of innovation, claims new division head
Facebook has announced it will be adding a team dedicated to working with European games developers.
Facebook already has such a team in the US, and the move is designed to support the success of European developers like Wooga, King.com, Supercell and Nordeus, who have managed to secure their own niche in the market with games unique to those offered by social gaming companies like Zynga.
The European team will be focusing on teaching developers about Facebook's mobile applications platform, launched in October 2011.
Users can now find games through Facebook's mobile apps, giving developers new ways to advertise, and more opportunities to convert gamers into paying customers.
"In the US, we have a team of engineers, product managers and partnerships folks who only do gaming, from Zynga down to two-person shops. Now we're creating that same unit in Europe too," Christian Hernandez, director of EMEA business development and partnerships at Facebook, told The Guardian.

Microsoft has revealed plans to abandon the "local-market feature" approach to languages in the upcoming Windows 8, instead allowing anyone to install any and all supported languages.
The situation with installing display languages in Windows has always been fairly restrictive, often needing a special version such as Windows 7 Ultimate, just to be able to display some other language.
In a new blog post on the Building Windows 8 blog, Microsoft said that Windows 8 would dump the confusing downloads of languages from Windows Update and the Microsoft Download Center and instead languages will be more easily installed in the control panel.
Microsoft's international team manager Ian Hamilton highlighted the usage case of a PC in a fairly common US scenario where Spanish would be useful for parents while English would be for their children.
Windows 8 will also be the first version of Windows to support "English for the United Kingdom", ending 27 years of a refusal to acknowledge English spelling preferences in the long line of Microsoft operating systems.
"We admit that this is something we should have done a long time ago," wrote Hamilton. "Windows users in the UK have gotten by with the US English version of Windows, and while we Americans knew this was not their favourite, that is clearly no defence," he joked.
Hamilton noted that this English dialect would probably be used by a number of other countries including India, Australia, South Africa, New Zealand and Ireland. Well colour us surprised.

A new, free-to-play entry in the classic MechWarrior series has been announced for the second half of 2012. MechWarrior Tactics is in development at Roadhouse Interactive and A.C.R.O.N.Y.M. Games, with publishing duties handled by Infinite Game Publishing.
MechWarrior Tactics is a free-to-play, turn-based strategy game employing micro-transactions for purchasing "vital combat and cosmetic resources to outfit each Mech, assemble a lance of four Mechs, and then go online for epic multiplayer showdowns competing for large payouts and top billing on global leaderboards." Right now, that's all we've got to go on -- if you want to register a commander name, you can head over to MechWarrior Tactics' official site.

Allowing third parties to build content for MS Flight would create a ‘confusing mess’ for new customers, Microsoft said.
Flight sim specialists told MCV last month that Microsoft needs to let them create content for its new PC free-to-play game MS Flight.
Firms such as Just Flight and First Class Simulations have built expansions for Microsoft’s previous Flight Simulator titles. But Microsoft is handling the DLC in-house this time.
However, it will think about allowing third-parties on board if it struggles to meet a massive demand.
“We’re trying something very different,” MS Flight’s exec producer Joshua Howard told MCV. “Instead of opening this up to everything, anywhere, by anybody, which frankly creates sort of a confusing mess for a new customer, we get to manage it more, tell a story, help it grow and get on its feet.
“I believe this ecosystem will come to be larger than the existing product’s ecosystem. And that will be a point where I can’t meet the appetite of a customer base, and I will invest to bring more people in.
“I’m also not interested in limiting MS Flight to merely a triple-A title. I think MS Flight can appeal to people who wouldn’t ever consider themselves gamers.”
MS Flight arrives on February 29th. It could also land on other platforms in the future.
“MS Flight is launching on Games for Windows Live, but we’ll be on the lookout for ways we can bring the world of Flight to whole new audiences, platforms, and devices,” added Howard.

Over 750,000 registered for MMO's closed beta
Funcom has announced its new MMO, The Secret World, is to launch on June 19, 2012.
The game had been originally anticipated for an April release, but Funcom has decided to give the developers more time for "even more polish".
With writer/director Ragnar Tørnquist of The Longest Journey at the helm, The Secret World promises subscribers a unique story, and quests that take them into the real world to find clues to puzzles scattered throughout the game.
Over 750,000 have registered for the closed Beta, which Funcom has said will intensify in the coming weeks, and should see several large scale pre-launch events.

Breakdown shows The Witcher 2 sold 1.1m, The Witcher sold 400k
CD Projekt Red revealed the 2011 sales figures for its Witcher franchise totaled over 1.5 million.
The Witcher 2, released for PC last year, sold over 1.1 million copies, and its predecessor, The Witcher, launched in 2007, sold over 400 thousand.
"We were all incredibly surprised by the number of copies sold," said Adam Badowski, head of the CD Projekt RED studio. "The Witcher 2 has garnered over 60 industry awards, and gamers seem to love it. I have to admit, though, that the sales results for The Witcher, 5 years on from the game's premier, are remarkable. If anything, they prove that the content we put into our games ages well. I think that The Witcher will continue to generate buzz in the coming years."
CD Projekt plans to launch The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings Enhanced Edition for Xbox 360 and PC on the 17th of April this year.
The new version will contain an additional four hours of content, including new animations and cinematics

Microsoft has unveiled plans to integrate the firm's cloud storage service SkyDrive with the upcoming Windows 8 operating system, similar to that offered by the integration of Apple's platforms and iCloud.
The company revealed that Microsoft has 17 million SkyDrive users that use the service ever month, adding up to 10 petabytes of data. In a new post on the Building Windows 8 blog, Microsoft described how a new "Metro Style" Windows 8 app would come with the OS as well as having SkyDrive files integrated into the desktop and viewable through Windows Explorer.
An 'early' version of the SkyDrive app will be including in the upcoming Consumer Preview version.
"One of the most powerful features in Windows 8 is the ability to integrate SkyDrive functionality across other apps using charms and contracts," blogged SkyDrive boss Mike Torres.
"SyDrive is available as a file picker, so from any app you’ll be able to open files from, and save files to your SkyDrive," he added.
Torres pointed out that any apps that open and save documents and photos will be able to save to the cloud-based SkyDrive without adding specific support. Rather like any number of other cloud storage services that appear as Windows folders and drives then.
Much of the blog post explains the benefits of SkyDrive integration with Windows 8 in terms of the rather obvious benefits of cloud storage which will already be familiar to the countless users of SkyDrive already, or third-party offerings such as Dropbox.
One unique aspect is that Microsoft is also going with a two-factor authentication scheme when accessing SkyDrive files from any other PC than a 'trusted PC'. The system will need a code sent to an alternative email address or text message phone number.
Unsurprisingly SkyDrive will also feature on Windows Phone, presumably as a platform exclusive although there have already been third-party SkyDrive client apps appearing for iOS and Android. Microsoft being Microsoft, we'd expect the tightest integration to occur entirely within the firm's own-brand software.
Microsoft also helpfully suggested that SkyDrive would be just the ticket for transferring files from earlier versions of Windows when upgrading to Windows 8.

Mojang is everyone's favorite studio to blindly throw money at these days, so it comes as little surprise that the Sweden-based Minecraft creators raised nearly $500K ($458,215.95) this past weekend during a live "game jam." The conceit was that Mojang would arrange a game jam (a "Mojam," if you will) and stream it live across 60 hours, with the resulting product being added to the most recent Humble Indie Bundle, as well as two games developed under similar constraints from Oxeye Game Studio and Wolfire Games.
What games did the three studios end up making? Mojang created an Egyptian/Steampunk-themed RTS slash shoot 'em up called "Catacomb Snatch," which we'll refrain from making lurid jokes about, while Oxeye made a game named "Fists of Resistance" and Wolfire made "The Broadside Express."
As over 81K bundles were purchased, the three studios collectively raised just under half a million dollars, all of which will be donated to Child's Play, Electronic Frontier Foundation, charity:water, and the American Red Cross. Now, if you'll excuse us, we've got some lurid jokes to make in private.

'A lot of people are still approaching it in almost a pre-Internet fashion'
Free-to-play is a wake up call for the industry on game pricing models, Gabe Newell has claimed.
Speaking to Penny Arcade, the Valve boss said that more value can be created by involving customers into a game world rather than just extracting a high upfront fee, and it is something those in the industry should have adopted sooner.
“Pricing is one of those things where a lot of people are still approaching it in almost a pre-Internet fashion instead of seeing that there’s actually an opportunity to do a better job of delivering the right stuff to the right customer for the right combination of pieces,” said Newell.
“So if you look at free-to-play, that should be kind of a wake up call to everybody in our industry that we should have been able to figure that out sooner, that this realisation that a lot of customers create more value by being in the world than people were extracting by trying to charge them an upfront fee.”
Newell added that pricing structures should be seen “almost as a service opportunity”, with certain models offering discovery problems to customers turned off by high prices.

Valve boss 'frustrated' by mediocre gaming inputs on platform
Fixing the mediocre tablet interface for gaming would be Gabe Newell’s dream project, the Valve boss has revealed.
Newell said that if he had the opportunity, he’d get to work on designing a more gaming friendly tablet hardware interface and develop content created specifically with the device’s controls in mind.
He claimed that current control schemes on the platform were “mediocre” at best, and need to be changed if gaming experiences are to be improved.
“I use a tablet a ton, so if I could pick one magic wand I would have us all sit down and design a new, more gaming friendly tablet hardware interface and then build some content that really was designed at the same time as the hardware,” he told Penny Arcade.
“So if I could pick one thing that would be it. Because I’m really frustrated as a tablet user with how mediocre the gaming inputs are.”

The Chrome dev team is working toward a vision of Web apps that offers a clean break from traditional websites, writes Fatal Exception's Neil McAllister, in response to Google's new Field Guide for Web Applications. 'When you add it up, it starts to look as though, for all the noise Google makes about Web standards, Chrome is moving further and further apart from competing browsers, just by virtue of its technological advantages. In that sense, maybe Chrome isn't just a Web browser; maybe Chrome itself is the platform — or is becoming one.'"

Having completed Syndicate before EA ships it next week, Swedish developer Starbreeze has let several employees go. The company employed 93 individuals while working on the FPS reboot, 25 of which have been dismissed, according to GamesIndustry.biz (registration required). Starbreeze chairman Peter Tornquist has also reportedly resigned.
"It is sad that we are forced to make staff cutbacks affecting employees. But we have to reduce staff after the final delivery of the Syndicate," CEO Mikael Nermark told GI.biz. Layoffs at development studios on the cusp of shipping a title has quickly become the norm for the industry. We don't like to see anyone lose their job and hope the individuals in Sweden affected by our least favorite tag find new work as soon as possible.

Microsoft is making plenty of big changes with its Windows 8 operating system, and that has now also extended to a new logo. As explained by Microsoft's Sam Moreau in a post on the official Windows blog, the logo was created with the help of the design agency Pentagram, which posed a simple question when it began on the project: "your name is Windows. Why are you a flag?" That discussion eventually led to the four-paned window you see above, which not only looks more like a window than the previous logos, but clearly echoes the company's new Metro design language. Microsoft also notes that the logo is "authentically digital," and says it will welcome you with a slight tilt and change color based on your desktop. You can see a bigger version after the break, and read the full story of its creation (along with a look back at past logos) at the source link below.

The Document Foundation has announced the third major release of the Open Office fork which they say is the result of the full time efforts of the largest group of ex-Open Office developers.
When the open source developers behind the popular free OpenOffice.org became unhappy with the governance of the project following Oracles acquisition of Sun, many of them moved to the new fork LibreOffice. Now the latest LibreOffice 3.5 adds a raft of new features for the suite's applications including Writer, Impress / Draw, Calc and Base.
"In sixteen months, we have achieved incredible results," said SUSE Linux engineer Michael Meek who is also a founder and director at The Document Foundation that was formed to oversee LibreOffice development.
"Although we still have a long way to go, users - who have sometimes complained for the stability of the software, as they were not aware of the technical debt we were fighting with - can now benefit from a substantially cleaner, leaner and more feature rich LibreOffice 3.5."
Some of the new features in LibreOffice 3.5 Writer include a new grammar checker, improved typographical features, interactive word count window and new interfaces for headers, footers and page breaks.
Impress and Draw can now import custom shapes and Smart Art from power point documents and Calc now offers better performance when importing from other document formats.
The new LibreOffice also includes an online update checker for the first time which will inform users of new versions when they arrive.
LibreOffice 3.5 can be downloaded for Windows, Linux and Mac OS X from this site.
