Will the devices deal a further blow to the falling sales of Nintendo and Sony?
Market researcher comScore says when it comes to tablet use, games are the most popular activity ahead of videos, music and reading.
Results show 67 per cent of tablet owners use their device to play games at least once per month, while 65 per cent view video clips, 62 per cent listen to downloaded music and 57 per cent read e-magazines and newspapers.
The report also highlights that on a daily basis, 23 per cent use the device for gameplay.
This will come as bad news to Sony and Nintendo, who we recently reported are facing rapidly falling sales at the hands of Android and iOS smartphones, which are seeing a growing interest in gaming.
Mark Donovan, SVP of mobile at comScore, said: "It took us seven years to get to the first 20 million smartphone owners, and it took us 20 months to get to the first 20 million tablet owners."

Before you venture over to Steam's Autumn Sale page, quietly recite your honed mantra of resistance: "I do not have time to play these games. I haven't even finished Skyrim. All these small charges add up in the long run."
Alright, now that you've done that and shown yourself a vague, minute attempt at adhering to frugality, you'll feel less guilty when you buy everything. L.A. Noire: The Complete Edition wants $24.99, Fallout: New Vegas is five bucks and the Monkey Island Special Edition bundle is cut down to $5.09.
ACE Team's bizarro brawler, Zeno Clash, enters the sale at $3.74, and topsy-turvy adventure VVVVVV costs $1.24 until tomorrow afternoon. That's less than 21 cents per V.

Google's Chrome browser will soon have greatly enhanced gaming capabilities, with plug-and-play support for gamepads on the way.
The news was revealed by Google developer advocate Paul Kinlan during a talk earler today at Develop Liverpool. Due in the first quarter of next year, the update will also see Chrome support cameras and microphones without the need for plug-ins, with Kinlan hinting at the possibilities for augmented reality games and player tracking.
Also planned is support for WebRTC, an open-source video chat application that will run directly in-browser with no plug-in required. It also opens the door for an OnLive-style cloud gaming service, something Kinlan says Google is already working on - though server infrastructure and publishing agreements are another matter.
It all goes to show the growing potential of Chrome for games. With HTML5 widely accepted to replace Flash in the fullness of time, Chrome's support for accelerated graphics with WebGL, and an unrivalled update cycle - Google releases a new version every six weeks, no matter what - it's certainly got the technology. With over 200 million users - it's expected to replace Mozilla Firefox as the second most popular browser on the planet before the year is out - it also has the audience.

Imagine, if you will: Turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberry sauce, gravy, stuffing, more gravy and a mountain of dead Zerg. This could be your Thanksgiving weekend if you pick up StarCraft 2, which is on sale for $30 until Monday at the Blizzard Store. Don't forget the gravy (or the Goliaths).

I Am Alive creative director Stanislas Mettra has plainly stated that PC piracy makes the financial viability of the game on the platform uncertain. Ubisoft previously announced the downloadable title was only planned for consoles.
"We've heard loud and clear that PC gamers are bitching about there being no version for them," Mettra said to IncGamers. "But are these people just making noise just because there's no version or because it's a game they actually want to play? Would they buy it if we made it?"
Mettra continued that if 50,000 PC players buy the game it's not worth the cost of putting a team of 12 on the project for three months. He continued, "It's hard because there's so much piracy and so few people are paying for PC games that we have to precisely weigh it up against the cost of making it."
Since I Am Alive runs on the Splinter Cell: Conviction engine, it could be ported to PC, but it's pretty clear that Ubisoft's relationship with PC players has become contentious, bordering on combative. It wouldn't be surprising if I Am Alive comes to PC some day, but it'll take longer than the standard one month delay.

Range of improvements to Windows edition of the tech
Microsoft is building a Windows-specific version of the Kinect motion controller with a range of potential improvements made to the peripheral.
The headline enhancement to the new device is that it will be able to read objects that are about half a metre away from the depth camera.
“This is one of the most requested features from the many developers and companies participating in our Kinect for Windows pilot program and folks commenting on our forums,” said Kinect for Windows manager Craig Eisler.
“We have optimised certain hardware components and made firmware adjustments which better enable PC-centric scenarios,” he added.
The device will come with a small dongle “to improve coexistence with other USB peripherals”.

Test Drive: Ferrari launches in Europe on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on 30th March, new publisher Bigben Interactive has announced. No gameplay details have been revealed yet, and it's not known who is developing. However, speculation points to this being Need For Speed: Shift developer Slightly Mad Studios' long-rumoured Ferrari game.Blimey! Games, which Slightly Mad acquired back in 2009, had a licensed Ferrari title in the works, which was then reportedly held up by legal wranglings. When quizzed on the No Grip forum as to the game's status back in August, Slightly Mad's head of development Ian Bell replied, "On the Ferrari game, expect some interesting news very soon."We've asked the UK-based studio to confirm or deny and will update when we hear back. The last entry in the Test Drive series, Test Drive: Unlimited 2, was published by Atari back in February. It's not clear whether Atari will be publishing Test Drive: Ferrari outside of Europe.

Battlefield 3's first, er, second major patch is now live server-side and for PC, with console updates coming as soon as the patch finishes the certification process. There's no mention of the tactical flashlight fix, but patch notes confirm that squad selection has received a significant upgrade.
Changes to squad functionality, detailed on the Battlefield blog, include the removal of "find me a squad" and other streamlining enhancements. Squads that are empty will now show up in white and occupied squads in blue, so it'll be easier for friends to quickly select a room to join together.
We've placed the full patch notes after the break, since EA decided you need a Battlelog account to view it otherwise (and we know plenty of people who still can't get that mess to work).

The global launch the Star Wars MMO could trigger a mass-exodus of World of Warcraft subscribers, according to new analyst data.
Lazard Capital Markets has downgraded Activision Blizzard’s stock from ‘buy’ to ‘neutral’ after a recent survey found that more than half of existing World of Warcraft subscribers have grown tired of the game.
The survey, conducted in conjunction with Peanut Labs, polled 381 online customers and found that 50 per cent plan to buy EA’s The Old Republic. Another 38 per cent declared an interest. Lazard Capital Markets calculated the data, along with considerations to increased competition, to conclude that World of Warcraft could lose between 900,000 to 1.6 million players following the launch of The Old Republic in December.

It's bad enough listening to your therapist drone on about the hatred you harbor toward your father. Pretty soon, you may have to put up with a hyper-insightful computer, as well. That's what researchers from the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid have begun developing, with a new system capable of reading human emotions. As explained in their study, published in theJournal on Advances in Signal Processing, the computer has been designed to intelligently engage with people, and to adjust its dialogue according to a user's emotional state. To gauge this, researchers looked at a total of 60 acoustic parameters, including the tenor of a user's voice, the speed at which one speaks, and the length of any pauses. They also implemented controls to account for any endogenous reactions (e.g., if a user gets frustrated with the computer's speech), and enabled the adaptable device to modify its speech accordingly, based on predictions of where the conversation may lead. In the end, they found that users responded more positively whenever the computer spoke in "objective terms" (i.e., with more succinct dialogue). The same could probably be said for most bloggers, as well. Teleport past the break for the full PR, along with a demo video (in Spanish).

While hackers have been having their way with the Kinect on the PC for a long, long time, Microsoft itself has only recently embraced this sort of behavior. First it was with an official SDK and then, soon after, a follow-up letting things go commercial. We've been eagerly awaiting Office integration -- imagine lazily waving away every boring PPT that lands in your inbox -- but also struggling to figure out just how such a device would fit on our cluttered desks. Microsoft is now promising a PC-specific version to release sometime in 2012, able to focus on objects as close as 50cm from the lens -- quite an improvement given our current Kinect seems unhappy if we're standing anywhere within five feet. The hardware is also said to be "optimized" for desktop use and the USB cable shortened, but we're still in the dark about how exactly it will look. Might we suggest Keepon integration?

Microsoft is to streamline the installation of Windows 8 over previous versions of the operating system, aiming to reduce the time taken to get the OS onto a new PC.
In another mammoth post on the Building Windows 8 Blog, Christa St. Pierre from Microsoft's Setup and Deployment team highlighted conflicting needs of different types of users. Namely those that install the OS from the UI of the former OS and those that run set up from boot media.
"Rather than trying to rationalize two fairly different experiences and customer requirements, we chose to maintain two setup user experiences," said St. Pierre.
Windows 8 will offer a 'streamlined setup' via an executable (either web delivery or a DVD), and an advanced setup that is accessible via boot media such as a DVD or USB key. The advanced setup will focus on aspects such as partition selection and formatting.
The blog post also described the workings of Microsoft's web-deployed version of Windows 8 which would first begin a compatibility scan, showing what hardware is expected to work and which will need attention (presumably third party drivers).
An example shot shots the popular virtual optical disk image mounting software VirtualCloneDrive as one of the applications that would be incompatible (or 'needs your attention' in Microsoft speak).
In upgrades, Windows 8 will also shove the old operating system into a Windows.old folder, preserved in case a roll back is necessary. Rather than moving files physically, or at least physically in the case of hard drives, Windows 8 will use hard links which will provide a "significant performance gain," Microsoft said.
They're not joking either. Windows 7 vs Windows 8 upgrade times were compared. A clean install of Windows 7 takes 32 minutes and 21 minutes for Windows 8 but a 'heavy upgrade' of 90 apps and 430k files would take a whopping 188 minutes (yes, three hours) but just 46 minutes on Windows 8.
With the new OS optimised for web delivery, Microsoft also turned to making sure the installation files are as small as possible. Using the new system on the old Windows 7 x86 ISO, Windows 8's delivery system would drop the download from 2.32GB to 1.51GB.
"Customers who choose to install Windows from an online source will have a greatly improved experience over what we’ve delivered in the past, with smaller and faster downloads, as well as increased resiliency and control."
In keeping with Microsoft's new chatty strategy for Windows 8, St. Pierre appeared in a video (not chatty enough to put somewhere useful like YouTube) demonstrating how booting from USB and unattended installations will work with Windows 8. Link to mp4 file here. There's a web stream version about two-thirds the way down the massive blog post.

HP's Q4 and full-year fiscals show that while the cost was $3.3bn, the revenue from webOS's flagship tablet products, TouchPad, was just $200m
And that's why they call it the OuchPad.
How much the loss would have been if HP had decided to plough on with webOS and its own devices built on the platform is debatable, but the fact is that webOS is possibly for sale and the hardware division is no more.
Despite rumours of many potential acquirers (Amazon, Samsung, Microsoft etc), the future of webOS remains uncertain. It could even go open source. The most recent comment from the company came from new CEO Meg Whitman who said HP wouldn't be rushed either way.
Although webOS ripped $3.3bn from the balance sheet, HP still made GAAP net revenue for fiscal 2011of $127.2 billion, up one per cent on 2010.

The Counter-Strike: Global Offensive public beta goes live worldwide to anyone in possession of a key on 30th November, Valve has announced.Valve said on Twitter "it is important to us to get current players in the beta. That will happen. No ETA on when yet".The beta is available for the PC only. It begins with two maps: Dust and Dust2, and is designed to be at first a "subset" of the game.Valve delayed the CS:GO beta, which was due to launch in October, because of feedback given by professional Counter-Strike 1.6 players.Professionals were invited to play the game and offer their thoughts. Valve's Chet Faliszek explained that their early access was granted because they could "talk intelligently about the game", whereas with the masses, constructive feedback can be hard to come by.When testing does begin, around 10,000 people will be invited to participate. "After that we'll grow it in steps as we get a test server infrastructure and scalability," he explained.Valve's relaxed approach to beta timings extends to the game's full release. CS: GO was announced as an early 2012 title for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360, but Faliszek said that specifically when the game launches will be down to the community.CS: GO is based on the Portal 2 version of Source, and requires DirectX 9 only.

The developers of ScummVM are pleased to announce that as of today, the classic game Beneath A Steel Sky has full support for James Woodcock's Music Enhancement Project within the latest daily build. The project started way back in January 2006 as James Woodcock committed himself to use the original MIDI files from various Point and Click Adventure titles, creating enhanced versions using modern MIDI equipment. He has already released the Simon the Sorcerer, Discworld and Inherit the Earth versions and can now add Beneath A Steel Sky to his completion list:
"I have tried very hard to remain faithful to the originals in respect to the excellent composers creations..." says James Woodcock, creator of the ScummVM Music Enhancement Project. He continues "...There has been a lot of support and interest from Beneath A Steel Sky fans, who have been monitoring its progress very carefully and it is with great pleasure I can finally play Beneath A Steel Sky using new versions of the original soundtrack with many thanks to the developers of ScummVM for all their hard work in making this feature possible".
James uses the Yamaha Tyros4 keyboard hooked up to his computer via USB and after going through various tweaking, recording and editing, a finalised music track is born.
You can download the enhanced soundtrack from James' Beneath A Steel Sky page, where instructions are also included. You can follow and show your support for James on both Twitter and Facebook.
