Ambitious cloud gaming service Gaikai is targeting 100 million users by the end of 2012, according to CEO David Perry.
The company has passed the previous 10 million target through affiliates, with Perry likening the business to that of retail giant Amazon rather than any other company in the games space.
"We are targeting 100 million as quickly as we can possibly get there," he said, speaking in an exclusive interview published today. "We need to get above the reach of any single game entity in the industry a quickly as we can.
The ability to pull a lever and have a million people play your game… that will be really quite straight forward.
David Perry, Gaikai
Using affiliate websites - retailers, entertainment destinations - Gaikai can place games directly in front of established audiences, with Perry claiming it's easy to hit another one million users at the touch of a button.
"The ability to pull a lever and have a million people play your game is something that's crazy to even think about today. That's a very difficult problem, yet with cloud gaming that will be really quite straight forward. A normal way of thinking will be, 'I want another million and another million'.
"It turns out that the number one way to get people to buy is trying your product, and it's amazing that game trials are being made so difficult," he added.
Perry is also aware of the amount of responsibility that places on the company, having to build a infrastructure for partners to reach huge audiences reliably - and that's part of the reason the company has only so far been offering demo content rather than full game streaming like rival OnLive.
"We are a company doing this for other people. If this was just Gaikai and Gaikai has down time that's our problem. But if I'm doing it for Electronic Arts or someone else and it's down, then it's my problem big-time and everyone's going to be calling. If you just paid to play a game and you log in and it's not available for any reason you're going to get mad.
"We're at a point now where the conversions that we're seeing on the partner sites are way higher than expected so now we want to go to full games. The problem with that is I need to offer Amazon-level 'always up' service time."
The full interview with Perry, where he also discusses the complexity of building a dedicated Gaikai controller, modding and cloud gaming's 'dinosaur' moment, can be read here.

"It turns out Microsoft's app compatibility will be limited to one architecture or another. Yes, Windows 8 will run on your ARM tablet, but your x86 Office 2003 will not. In his explanation, Steven Sinofsky reasoned, 'If we allow the world of x86 application support like that, or based on what we call desktop apps in our start yesterday, then there are real challenges in some of the value propositions for system on a chip,' he said. 'You know, will battery life be as good, for example? Well, those applications aren't written to be really great in the face of limited battery constraints, which is a value proposition of the Metro style apps.'"

Research conducted by IHS Screen Digest suggests subscription revenue generated by online PC games in the US and Europe dropped for “the first time” in 2010. Subscription revenue amounted to $1.58 billion last year, down five per cent from 2009, and is expected to fall annually to $1.33 billion in 2015. “The 2010 decline in subscription revenue - the first annual contraction experienced by the market since our coverage of this segment started in 2002 - represents an inflection point for the industry,” said Piers Harding-Rolls, senior analyst and head of games at IHS. “The focus of many PC game operators has clearly shifted to microtransaction-based models.” US and European microtransaction revenue leapt 24.2 per cent in 2010 and is expected to hit $1.8 billion in 2015. “This more than compensated for the decline in the subscription area and caused total Western MMOG/MOG market revenue - both subscriptions and microtransactions - to rise to $2.7 billion in 2010,” up 5.3 per cent from 2009, said Harding-Rolls The figure represents a 9.6 per cent share of the $31 billion spent in the West on all games content last year, according to IHS.

The latest blog from Windows president Steven Sinofsky, ably assisted by Grant George and Jeff Piira, talks about Redmond's testing of Windows 8 touch on current hardware and how touch has changed the way it develops software. Using kit like the Thinkpad X201, HP Elitebook 2740 and ASUS EP121, Microsoft is realizing that the "feel" of touch to the user is more important than simple hardware performance. It's also testing manufacturers' bezel designs, graphics setups and screen cover glass in an attempt to make Windows 8 "feel right" across the wide variety of systems it will run on -- a challenge in every sense of the word. Anyone interested in playing a quick game of "spot the device" should see the pic from inside the Windows testing lab that's after the break.

September 14th, 2011, 23:38 Posted By: wraggster
US retail giant Best Buy reported flat year-on-year revenues and falling profits in its fiscal second quarter report.
Revenues for the period ending August 27 were $11.35 billion, a 0.1 percent increase over $11.34 billion in the same period last year. Net profit was $177 million, down from $254 million last year.
The largest sales growth in the company's inventory was tablet computers, with iPad continuing to perform strongly. Sales of Android devices, however, exceeded the company's expectations.
"Going forward, we continue to be bullish on the growth of this new computing form factor and are encouraged by the new models in the pipeline over the next several months that will offer our customers even more choice, both online and in stores," said CEO Brian J. Dunn during an call with investors
However, sales gains were offset by decline in numerous areas, including gaming. Best Buy's executive vice president Michael A. Vitelli put the percentage loss in the "low to mid double-digits," attributing it to the period's weak release schedule.
"While there is a stream of new titles coming in the months ahead, it remains unclear where the customer will choose to spend," added Dunn.
"Regardless of the state of the industry, however, we are confident we have the people and promotions to continue growing share and making progress in this category.
Vitelli predicted that Best Buy's gaming business would improve considerably in the rest of the fiscal year due to its move into "trade-ins" against new releases.
"Pre-owned itself was relatively modest in the first half in the second quarter," he said. "What's happening now is we are beginning to do trade-ins. We're doing that successfully by having a really compelling offer on our price points of what we offer for trade-in, that we're starting to build that inventory that will allow us to have those sales in the second half."

As with any version of Windows, the Metro-slathered Win 8 has one of those oh so familiar Blue Screen of Death thingies. But, this time around, there's a change. Gone are the confusing and uninformative error codes, and in its place you get an equally uninformative sad emoticon. OK, there's also some text informing you that your PC is about to reboot, but it still doesn't get you any closer to tracking down the root of the problem. Well, at least it's little less cutesy than the Sad Mac (though, no less infuriating).

We've already heard that quite a few of you have downloaded Windows 8 since the developer previewbecame available last night, and it looks like plenty of other folks have as well --- about 500,000 in the first 12 hours, to be specific. That's according to Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer himself, who took to the stage at Build earlier today to dish that particular bit of news and recap the past two day's events. Hit the source link below for a video of the full keynote if you missed it (Ballmer's appearance is around the 2:32 mark).

First Activision, now Sega. Not happy with just challenging Call of Duty in the shooter space, EA?says it has big ambitions for the footie sim category.
The company has revamped its FIFA Manager game, and believes that the series can – in the long term – rival Football Manager.
“We believe we’re very much the entry level into football management games,” EA’s producer for FIFA Manager 12 Adrian Curry told MCV. “If you’ve got an interest in football but feel Football Manager can be a bit daunting, our games are very accessible for coming into this genre. We’ve improved the 3D side of things and the AI has had a total makeover.
“There’s a lot of simplicity to be had in the game. The assistant managers can do a lot for you, while the menus are simplified. We want to make it as easy as possible for someone to enter the genre.”
Sega’s Football Manager series has sold over 7m copies worldwide to date, while topping the UK PC games charts a humongous 108 times.“It’s very much a long-term commitment to try and reach that level,” Curry added.
“Obviously the franchise is profitable for us otherwise we wouldn’t be making it, but there’s definitely room for growth within the UK market.”FIFA Manager 12 is out on October 21st.

Curious what the minimum specifications for Windows 8 will be? As are we. Microsoft's remaining mum on specifics, but the outfit's Steven Sinofsky -- President of Windows and Windows Live -- just confessed during the opening Build 2011 keynote that an antediluvian Lenovo S10 was potent enough to run Windows 8. And in fact, it'll do so with more poise than with Windows 7. A brief demonstration explained that Win8 demanded fewer system resources (barely, but still) than Win7 on the same hardware, proving that an early-gen Atom CPU and 1GB of RAM is "enough" to run the outfit's upcoming operating system. We highly doubt it's enjoyable, but at least you (probably) won't be forced into an upgrade if you don't want to be. Have a gander at the actual numbers just after the break!

Oh, sure -- you've already started digging into the upcoming Windows Store (or, at least what it'll deliver), but Microsoft just revealed a cute little nugget about its future functionality here at Build 2011. In keeping with its mantra of making Windows 8 a one-size-fits-all affair, the Store will be home to both Metro-style apps (useful for tablets and desktops alike) as well as traditional Win32 programs. You know, like Quicken. The outfit is hoping for this to provide more visibility for the programs that we all grew up on, and so long as the categorization is under control, we're all for it.
Not surprising, given that there's "no overlay" here. Whatever you see, it's "all Windows." The company's playing up its flexibility for coders, with a full spate of supported coding options explained in graphical detail just after the break.

Today, Windows Division prexy Steven Sinofsky treated Build 2011 attendees to a walkthrough of the various tweaks, subtle or otherwise, Microsoft's made to Windows 8. Staying true to its roots, the new OS implements the familiar keyboard commands users have become accustomed to over the years -- you know, like CMD and Ctrl+F. And as for its update to Internet Explorer, MS has imbued its tenth iteration with the ability to switch between the much-hyped Metro-style UI and plain old desktop view -- all according to your whimsy. Of course, Redmond's instituted other sweeping changes across the platform, and you can check some of the highlights after the break.

GeekWire reports that, for better or worse, the upcoming week is shaping up as one of the most pivotal in Microsoft's history, as the software giant makes its pitch for Windows 8 at two important conferences. First, Microsoft will be huddling with hardware and software developers beginning Tuesday at its sold-out BUILD conference ('BUILD will show you that Windows 8 changes everything'), where it's rumored that Samsung will unveil a Windows 8 tablet. And on Wednesday, CEO Steve Ballmer and other execs will be holding the company's annual Financial Analyst Meeting, which was delayed from its traditional summer date to allow the company to put its Windows 8 strategy in context for Wall Street. So, are we about to finally see the realization of Microsoft's vision for http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y6IKSpoMUMM"]Information at Your Fingertips (), which Bill Gates introduced with a hokey video at Comdex 1994?

Perhaps the most un-secret 'secret' game in history, EA's remake of Bullfrog classic Syndicate, has leaked online via the publisher's Origin download service.
Developed - as previously rumoured - by Swedish Chronicles of Riddick studio Starbreeze, the reboot is described by a now-removed Origin listing as "a unique action shooter set in a not too distant future, where Business is War."
The new game takes the form of a "visceral" first-person shooter and will include 4-player co-op and "clip enhanced gameplay."
Players take on the role of Miles Kilo, corporation Eurocorp's latest prototype agent, and embark on "a brutal action adventure of corruption and revenge". The plot is scribed by Crysis 2 writer Richard Morgan.
The remake has been strongly rumoured for what seems like forever now, and last yearStarbreeze confirmed that it had canned its other project, based on Jason Bourne, to focus on one game.
CVG was of course among the first to out the remake, as we exclusively reported back in 2008 that the Bullfrog original was indeed getting a current-gen makeover.
The Bullfrog original was released in 1993 and later followed up in 1996 by Syndicate Wars.
The game put players in charge of a militant global corporation, and tasked them with leading cyborg agents around a gritty cyberpunk world rescuing captured allies and assassinating rival syndicate executives. It was awesome.
Here's the Origin listing (via NeoGAF) in full:
Syndicate is the re-imagination of a cult classic franchise from 1993 - a unique action shooter set in a not too distant future, where Business is War.
2069 - No longer governed by politicians, the developed world is divided up into regions controlled by megacorporations known as Syndicates. These Syndicates have revolutionized how the consumer interacts with the digital world. No longer does the consumer require a device to access the worlds data and control their technology, they can do this at the blink of an eye via neural chip implant. Civilians flocked to be chipd and enjoy all that their selected Syndicate has to offer; housing, medical, banking, insurance, education, entertainment and jobs. One complete package. One complete lifestyle. In return, the Syndicates gained unprecedented insights, and control, over the individual and their behaviour. With little governmental oversight, business has become war. The Syndicates will stop at nothing for ultimate market dominance. At the front line of this war are the Agents, the Syndicates bio-engineered and chip-augmented enforcers. They can breach anything in the wired world including their enemies, their weapons and the environment that surrounds them, making them the most efficient and deadly technological weapons in the world.
Take on the role of Miles Kilo, Eurocorps latest prototype agent, and embark on a brutal action adventure of corruption and revenge.
Chip Enhanced Gameplay: Slow down time, see through walls, and breach your enemy and everything digital in the world with Dart vision - A neural DART6 chip implant that allows you to interface directly with the Dataverse.
4-Player Online Co-op: Assemble your Syndicate for global domination. A 4-player, online co-op experience like no other, with chip enhanced gameplay and 9 missions re-imagined from the original Syndicate.
Visceral FPS Experience: Utilize an upgradable arsenal of futuristic weapons, armor and gear to annihilate your enemies and harvest their chip technology for personal advancement and sinister corporate greed.
Sci-Fi Fiction: Immerse yourself in the world of Syndicate 2069, with a world-class sci-fi story experience, written by bestselling author Richard Morgan.

Microsoft has posted details about a Windows 8 feature that is a hybrid between cold booting and waking up from a hibernated state. This feature is called fast startup mode. Gabe Aul, director of program management in Windows, explains: '[A]s in Windows 7, we close the user sessions, but instead of closing the kernel session, we hibernate it. Compared to a full hibernate, which includes a lot of memory pages in use by apps, session 0 hibernation data is much smaller, which takes substantially less time to write to disk. If you’re not familiar with hibernation, we’re effectively saving the system state and memory contents to a file on disk (hiberfil.sys) and then reading that back in on resume and restoring contents back to memory. Using this technique with boot gives us a significant advantage for boot times, since reading the hiberfile in and reinitializing drivers is much faster on most systems (30-70% faster on most systems we’ve tested).' The post contains a video as well, which shows Windows starting up in less than 10 seconds."

Hear this nerds? Windows 8 will ship with Hyper-V virtualization software integrated into the OS. Until now Hyper-V was limited to Microsoft's server products, but now consumers (whether they care or not) will be able to fire up virtual machines without the need to download VirtualBox or some other VM software suite. Now, the average person probably won't care too much, but power users will be thrilled. And, if virtualization can be integrated seamlessly to enhance security (through sandboxing) and compatibility with legacy apps (say, via an included XP license), it could be a huge boon to casual users -- even if they don't realize it's there. For more details about Hyper-V from the Windows 8 devs, including a nice demo video, check out the source link.
