Will still find their place in enterprise says marketing boss
Dell's European enterprise marketing boss Bryan Jones said that the growth of tablet PCs in enterprise amounted to a 'fad'.
Speaking in an interview with V3.co.uk, Jones said that younger workers were a 'driving force' behind the adoption of a raft of new computing devices including tablet computers such as the Apple iPad.
"We're seeing the tablet as a fad right now, like netbooks were three years ago," Jones said before admitting that the tablet would likely "find its space" but that they were not "sounding the death knell" of the laptops and workstations.
Jones did, however, warn that businesses could not afford to ignore the desires of fresh talent that demanded access to a range of new devices in the work force.
"For an IT professional to come in and say: 'I'm only giving you a locked-down limited choice of device' is totally unacceptable to this [staff] resource that companies are competing for," said Jones.

We're sure Microsoft is going to announce some more official details about Windows 8 one of these days, but until then we'll just have to make do with the seemingly unending stream of tidbits being unearthed from the leaked version of the OS. Most notably, this latest batch includes the most conclusive evidence yet of a Windows 8 app store, including the logo pictured above, and a slew of other references at the code level -- things like the ability to download a trial app and then unlock the full version (rather than re-download it), for instance, and the existence of things like screenshots and system requirements in the app store listings. Another recent leak has also revealed some new cloud-based settings options that could let you take your desktop profile and other personalizations from one computer to another, and even give you the ability to sync apps from that aforementioned Windows Store between PCs. All that, plus support for 3D displays and WiFi Direct. Hit up the links below for some additional details.

At only $195, it's hard to deny that AMD's new Phenom II X4 980 Black Edition desktop chip is a bargain. Its four cores hum along at 3.7GHz, the fastest base clock speed of any consumer CPU, and the unlocked multiplier should make it trivial for overclockers to push this beast to 4GHz andbeyond. The 980 slides right into the same price point as the previous champ, the Phenom II X4 975, and knocks a few bucks off the former clock-frequency king. All of this seems like great news for AMD fans. Of course, if you're starting from scratch and not just looking to upgrade an aging AM3 rig, keep in mind that only $30 more scores you the mid-range Core i5-2500K that consistently outperforms the 980, consumes less power, and also has an unlocked multiplier. Guess there's always the graphics market if you care to see AMD being competitive.

A multiplayer demo is in the works for Homefront, publisher THQ has announced.
CEO Brian Farrell broke the news during an earnings call earlier today, though didn't provide a planned release date.
"It's a fairly unusual strategy but where Homefront really shines is the online 32 player multiplayer capability," he explained.
"We know because of our strong marketing campaign that a lot of people have heard of Homefront and we think with this new demo we might stimulate more new users and purchasers of the game."
Farrell also announced that "a number of drops" of "robust" DLC are planned over the coming months but declined to divulge further information when pressed as to what form it might take.
Homefront launched on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 earlier this year, picking up a middling 6/10 from Eurogamer's Dan Whitehead.
"It's a decent multiplayer offering, but is unlikely to lure dedicated players away from the dominant franchises and their enormous and enthusiastic communities for long," he wrote of its multiplayer modes.
According to THQ's latest earnings report, the game has now shipped 2.6 million units to date.

Eurogamer-loved atomic puzzler SpaceChem is getting an explosion of new content.
A level editor leads the free additions, and allows budding scientists to concoct their own research assignments and share them with others.
On top of that you'll find 12 new levels, leaderboards, Steam Achievements and puzzles hiding a Moustachiam Alloy unlockable for Team Fortress 2.
You can nab free SpaceChem update on Steam now. There should be an "Update Now" button in-game, too.
SpaceChem challenges you to create new compounds from a pile of silly old atoms. You'll need to correctly combine the right bits for the chemistry to take place.
John Teti awarded SpaceChem a prestigious 9/10 in his Eurogamer review. "Rather than sticking its fingers up your nostrils and dragging you where it wants you to go, SpaceChem tries an unorthodox approach: not doing that," he wrote. "The unspoken attitude is, "Look, we have faith that you'll see why this is cool, so just try it.""

The open beta for APB Reloaded - the re-commissioned and free to play APB - will begin on 18th May.
But there's a good chance of getting an invite before then, providing you do two things: create a GamersFirst account and submit your details to the APB newsletter sign-up page.
GamersFirst is the developer that pulled APB fromthe Realtime Worlds wreckage. The aim is for APB Reloaded to get running in basic form - i.e. have a working micro-transaction shop - and be built upon thereafter.
"There are still a few important features that are not yet in the game," noted GamersFirst boss Bjorn Book-Larsson on the APB Reloaded blog - "new skill rating system [being] probably the most critical, and skill-based district segmentation and progression."
"[Also,] various tweaks to spawning, but those will be added as we move along, and likely some of the new ones will be there before Open Beta."
GamersFirst also mentioned full credit refunds for people helping test the micro-transaction store, plus character restoration for people with old APB heroes. You'll get an email about what you can reclaim.
There was a message for cheaters, too.
"It keeps baffling us that people are cheating in one moment and then paying for premium - and then continuing cheating," shrugged Book-Larsson. "Seems really odd, given the amount of money you will be risking for something that literally only will help you aim.
"We have on purpose not kicked hackers for over a week to monitor what they are doing. That clearly will change. One semi-famous aimbot site realised that we had caught a slew of their users over the weekend (though we did so silently), then they stopped their own hack, and then earlier today re-enabled it. Sigh: when will they ever learn?
"Anyway," he added, "before Open Beta we will perform various changes that will be good for the game and bad for the aimbotters. Long-term we have a more radical solution to the issue, which we will share when it's ready."

With the release of the dual-GPU AMD Radeon HD 6990, closely followed by the competing Nvidia GeForce GTX 590, we saw graphics card performance reach new heights. With bandwidth throughput in excess of 300GB/s, these cards can consume more power than entire computer systems. By utilizing three monitors, games can become roughly 3x more demanding, as the graphics card is required to render an overwhelmingly higher number of pixels. Whereas graphics card reviews and benchmarks usually test GPUs at single monitor resolutions, TechSpot has added two more LCD monitors and tested eleven games running at resolutions of 5040x1050, 5760x1200 and 7680x1600.http://hardware.slashdot.org/story/1...orce-Vs-Radeon

Epic Games and People Can Fly's over-the-top shooter Bulletstorm has received a patch on PC, which you can get your hands on by firing up Steam.
The new patch introduces a number of small bug fixes and makes a few changes to the matchmaking for owners of the Gun Sonata DLC.
This is our favourite update of the bunch: 'Players can now exit the game from the title screen by using the escape key' - fantastic.
Here's the full list of updates:
- Allows matchmaking for users purchasing downloadable Anarchy maps (Gun Sonata DLC Pack)
- Fix for experience gains bar sometimes overlapping its UI space after matches during XP Multiplier Events
- Fix for the Team version of the Double Penetration skillshot not appearing when used against Challenge enemies in some cases
- Fix for the MOTD sometimes scrolling too fast after game launch
- Anarchy Environmental Skillshot points are now accurate in the Multiplayer Skillshot Database
- A player's Quick Match lobby will now properly recover to display "Searching" if the other players in the lobby leave during the map vote tally
- Fix for extra points appearing in HUD during the Collapsed Building Echo (was causing it to appear as if the player "lost" points when falling through the doors in that Echo)
- Fixed an instance of a crash while the game is reloading checkpoint after player death
- Players can now exit the game from the title screen by using the ESCAPE key
- Fix for certain resolutions lowering performance (FPS)
- Fixes to enforce 2-way muting rules that were not being respected under different circumstances
Epic Games president Mike Capps has suggested coverage for Bulletstorm from Fox News actually helped sell the game.

Franchise hits 10m units; ‘McCrae’s spirit lives on despite omission from box,’ says Codies
‘High impact’ TV ads make up the centre point of Dirt 3’s £1m ad campaign.
Publisher Codemasters says its ads will run just before and after the game’s release (the title reaches shelves on May 24th) across major terrestrial and satellite channels.
“The TV campaign strives to create maximum cut through in a crowded space by daring to be different and to capture the attention of viewers to a uniquely Dirt 3 experience,” Codemasters brand manager Edward Newby-Robson told MCV.
“It will be targeted towards the younger demographic of the games’ audience.”
Codemasters’ marketing plan also includes online ads on automotive, specialist and lifestyle websites, and print ads in lifestyle and entertainment publications. The firm is putting focus on social media, too. As well as a presence on social sites, players can upload highlight videos onto YouTube.
Dirt 3 is the eighth game in the rally series, which has shifted 10m units at retail in its 11-year history. It is also the first game in the series to drop the Colin McCrae name. The legendary rally driver passed away in 2007.
Newby-Robson added: “Colin’s name may no longer be on the box but his spirit lives on in the game design.
“This includes a number of his cars plus rally stages that he made his name in. His motto of ‘if in doubt, flat out’ is still very much part of the fabric of Dirt 3.”
Rally stars Ken Block and Kris Meeke were technical consultants for Dirt 3’s development. The game is due out on May 24th for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.

Multi-GPU technology to be available more widely
Nvidia announced that that the firm's multi-GPU SLI technology is coming to AMD motherboards including those based on the 970, 990X and 99FX chipsets.
Nvidia spokesman Andrew Burnes said that while AMD's status among PC gamers "fell by the wayside" in recent years, the number of affordable high performance motherboards meant it was a "great time" to introduce SLI support.
"After all, we want to make sure that gamers can benefit from the new competitive CPU landscape and to ensure that their existing SLI setups can be utilised in all systems," Burnes wrote on the GeForce web site.
SLI support will appear in motherboards from the likes of Asus, Gigabyte, ASRock and MSI with one of the first to arrive the Asus Republic Of Gamers Crosshair V Formula AMD gaming motherboard.
Burnes couldn't resist taking some pot shots at arch graphics rival AMD, calling Nvidia's SLI the "highest performance, most stable" multi GPU technology and drawing attention to Valve's Steam hardware survey figures that show 93 per cent of multi-GPU systems were Nvidia based.http://www.pcr-online.biz/news/36241...D-motherboards

Firefox 4? Too furry. Internet Explorer 9? Too blue. Google's Chrome? Just the right amount of shine -- or is it? The company introduced a flat new logo for the browser and now that logo is gracing the software's latest stable release. Chrome 11 is now available, the biggest changes being a number of security and bug fixes, some of which "may be kept private until a majority of our users are up to date with the fix." The new version also delivers speech-to-text and, perhaps more importantly, text-to-speech. There are other enhancements too, but really you've probably already left us to update. Are you still there? Hello?

While Microsoft has not announced the release date of its follow-up to Windows 7, an early pre-beta version of Windows 8 (although its official name has not been confirmed) has surfaced on the Internet, the second version to appear within a month. It is the second milestone release that has showed up on the Internet this month. Users of this Windows 8 software have said it features a Ribbon-based user-interface, similar to the one used in recent editions of Microsoft Office. This specific milestone build also has software for a Webcam, a new task manager, a PDF reader and an immersive browser.""Surfacings" like this tell me that Microsoft sees the value in crowdsourced opinion gathering far more than they're sometimes given credit for.

Federal authorities will remotely uninstall the Coreflood botnet Trojan from some infected Windows PCs over the next four weeks. Coreflood will be removed from infected computers only when the owners have been identified by the DOJ and they have submitted an authorization form to the FBI. The DOJ's plan to uninstall Coreflood is the latest step in a coordinated campaign to cripple the botnet, which controls more than 2 million compromised computers. The remote wipe move will require consent, and the action does does come with warnings from the court that provided the injunction against the botnet, however. 'While the 'uninstall' command has been tested by the FBI and appears to work, it is nevertheless possible that the execution of the 'uninstall' command may produce unanticipated consequences, including damage to the infected computers,' the authorization form reads. FBI Special Agent Briana Neumiller said, 'The process does not affect any user files on an infected computer, nor does it ... access any data on the infected computer.' The DOJ and FBI did not say how many machines it has identified as candidates for its uninstall strategy, but told the judge that FBI field offices would be notifying affected people, companies and organizationshttp://it.slashdot.org/story/11/04/2...-From-Some-PCs

A fan-created Golden Axe game called "Golden Axe Myth" is now available for download on PC. In development since 2007, Myth has been designed as prequel to the arcade/Genesis game, and features all-new graphics, music and levels, and even a downloadable artbook and soundtrack. And it all looks great! So why is it that we're feeling so sad on this otherwise happy occasion?
It's basically a total bummer to be reminded of Sega's takedown of Streets of Rage Remakejust two weeks ago. Presuming that Myth will fall to the same fate, we're already feeling sad about the (future) ending of this fan creation. But that's all the more reason for you to download Golden Axe Myth while you can.
And to future fan-game developers: Just make a couple of changes! Call it "Platinum Halberd" and give the dwarf blue hair or something. It doesn't have to end in tragedy!
