Happy with your shiny new copy of Internet Explorer 9? It's already out of date -- Microsoft just announced Internet Explorer 10 at its MIX developer conference in Las Vegas, and if you're running Windows you can grab a spoon right now and sample an early taste. You can download the new Platform Preview right now at Microsoft's Test Drive site and see where the company's going with this early iteration, which adds support for additional web standards like CSS Gradients and CSS3 Flexible Box Layout. According to the press release, a gentleman named Dean Hachamovitch just revealed the new browser on the MIX stage, but we're actually watching him speak right now, and... he's not quite there yet. We'll let you know what he says.
Update: Video after the break!
Update 2: Dean and Steven Sinofsky (president of the Windows division) are indeed showing it off on stage, but they're just performing the same Test Drive tests you could run at home -- go on, you know you want to dip your toe in that HTML5 fishbowl.
Update 3: Oh, Dean, you're such a tease -- that copy of IE10 (and by association, Windows) was running on a 1GHz ARM chip! Yes, Windows on ARM -- photographic evidence after the break.
Update 4: NVIDIA just tweeted that the mysterious ARM chip is in fact a Tegra 2 processor.

Opera has always been the little browser that could, and the company is now embracing that spirit more than ever with its new ad campaign for the just-released Opera 11.10. To that end, it's launched a new ad campaign that it proudly boasts is its most expensive ever -- a record-setting $8,517.26, including a hefty $1,500 that they splurged on some "trendy Swedish clothes." Of course, the browser itself is the real story here and, while it's an incremental upgrade, it does boast a few fairly big new features, including support for Google's new WebP image format, a "SpeedDial" for your favorite websites, and a turbo mode that promises to compress and load web pages faster when you're on a slow connection. Just how does that work? We'll let Opera's Christen Krogh explain in the no-expenses-spared video after the break.

UPDATE: A SEGA spokesperson has given Kotakuthe following statement: "SEGA is committed to supporting any fans that take an interest in our games, and where possible we do so by involving them in Beta tests and other development, marketing or research opportunities.
"However we need to protect our intellectual property rights and this may result in us requesting that our fans remove online imagery, videos or games in some instances."
ORIGINAL STORY: SEGA has demanded that a hugely ambitious fan-made remake of its classic Streets of Rage beat 'em up be taken down from the web.
As reported by Gamasutra, developer Bomber Games unofficial effort had finally gone live last week following eight years in development. The free download boasted 103 stages, 19 playable characters, 64 enemies, 83 remixed songs, more than 40 cutscenes and eight different endings.
On top of all that, it had also shoehorned in a Survival Mode, Boss Rush Mode, Events Mode, Volleyball Mode, Allied CPU Mode, Profile Editor, Image Gallery, and a fistful of customisation options.
SEGA's lawyers clearly weren't as impressed as the internet at large was, however, asking the developer to take the game down.
"SEGA have contacted regarding the download hosted on this site," wrote a moderator on theBomber Games forum. "While this issue is being resolved, please do not upload the game for others to download. Any links posted on this site will be removed. Thank you."

THQ exec Danny Bilson has shrugged off middling review scores for recent FPS Homefront, insisting the publisher has achieved what it set out to do with the game.
In an interview with IGN, THQ's core game boss explained that developer Kaos Studios has successfully got itself "in the conversation' with market leaders Call of Duty and Battlefield.
"If we were universally panned, I would say 'Yeah I guess it didn't work'," he said. "I think the idea of 50 reviews that are so radically spread says that we made a game that has a point of view and that you might even argue is controversial.
"When we set out, and I was sitting with Kaos in New York, I was saying 'Guys, if we're going to make a modern shooter of any kind, we have to compete with the best of the world.'
"I remember in those meetings, the summary was: 'We don't expect to beat those guys; our mission is to be in the conversation.' And on being in the conversation: mission accomplished. Everybody's talking about Homefront"
He then went on to insist that the game's current Metacritic score of 70 was not representative of its quality.
"Do I prefer that it's controversial? No, I'd prefer if everybody in the world loved it. But there are 20 plus reviews that are over 80, there are some haters, and there are some mid-range ones.
"Do I read them all to see what we can do better next time and have every review be 100? Of course, our goal is always that. What I will say pretty clearly is the game is not a '71'. You can't apply math to art."
Released last month on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, Homefront notched up over a million sales in its first week on shelves.
"We're really excited about the numbers for sure," commented Bilson. "A million units in a week on an original IP coming out of nowhere I think speaks a lot to the concept and the marketing of the game. I think we really captured people's imagination with the IP."
Eurogamer's Dan Whitehead awarded the game 6/10 on release.
"What's most disappointing is that Homefront wanted so much to join COD and Battlefield at the top of the genre," wrote Dane Whitehead in his 6/10 review, "but has ended up as merely a weekend timewaster for players waiting for the next shooter fix.

"Independent retro games retailer Good Old Games has spoken out about digital rights management, saying that it can actually drive gamers to piracy, rather than acting as a deterrent. In an interview, a spokesperson for Good Old Games said that the effectiveness of DRM as a piracy-deterrent was 'None, or close to none.' 'What I will say isn't popular in the gaming industry,' says Kukawski, 'but in my opinion DRM drives people to pirate games rather than prevent them from doing that. Would you rather spend $50 on a game that requires installing malware on your system, or to stay online all the time and crashes every time the connection goes down, or would you rather download a cracked version without all that hassle?'"http://games.slashdot.org/story/11/0...Good-Old-Games

"The screenshots show Microsoft's new application store for Windows. The store appears to be running in Windows 7, hinting that the software giant may also be planning to offer its app store for legacy versions of Windows. Cnbeta posted the screenshots on Monday, however WinRumors is unable to confirm their authenticity at this time. The screenshots appear to show a number of Microsoft's own software, including third party software from Opera and Mozilla."

Valve's Chet Faliszek has said Portal 2 is "absolutely the best" single-player campaign Valve has ever produced. Soz, Half-Life 2. Consider yourself demoted.
Speaking with TGL at a recent Portal 2 press event, Faliszek said, "In terms of single-player experience, [Portal 2 is] absolutely the best" of Valve's games. Half-Life 2, which often tops 'Best PC Games ever' lists never even got a mention.
Left 4 Dead did though. "In terms of co-op," he added, "I'm going to say it's a tie with the Left 4 Dead series. Left 4 Dead is near to my heart. The Single player is so dense in Portal 2. It's the best." Does that make you so excited you squeak a little? No? Just us then.
Faliszek says the popularity of the Portal series has come as a surprise even to Valve. "We never could have guessed that it would have taken off the way it has. We didn't invent the game with this is mind," he admitted. "We just wanted to create a good game, with good environments and a cool world and go from there."
Valve today released the last in a series of funny Aperture Science marketing videos. The game's out on PC (via Steam), Xbox 360 and PS3 next week (April 19 in US, 22 in UK).

As recently as a year ago, Windows XP was the kingpin of PCs in the US with 43.1 percent market share. But that's rapidly changing. StatCounter shows that while Mac OS X is creeping up slightly and Windows Vista continues its death march, Windows 7 is on the rise, steadily closing the gap with trusty ole' XP. Last month, XP's share sank to 32.17 percent, while Windows 7's edged up to 30.84 percent, leaving the latter poised to overtake XP -- something the much-maligned Vista never did. And if early numbers are to be believed, it's already happened: StatCounter says that for the first week in April Windows 7's share (among desktops, at least) totaled 31.71 percent, compared with XP's 31.56. Either way, it seems Microsoft has convinced consumers that it's finally safe to upgrade.

April 11th, 2011, 21:18 Posted By: wraggster
A Mass Effect MMO is not only a possibility, teased BioWare series overlord Casey Hudson - it "makes sense".
"We've been trying to think of a way that makes sense for people to experience Mass Effect with their friends. We haven't yet come up with a way to do that, so we don't have anything to announce at this time. But, obviously, multiplayer is something we want to do more of in the future as a company," Hudson told Game Informer (via VG247).
"A lot of people say that they want to see an MMO - that kind of makes sense for this universe.
"Part of what you're trying to do is save the universe so you can live in it. That's part of the promise for any great IP. It has to be a world worth saving. Mass Effect has that quality to it.
"If you get rid of the Reapers and win that," he added, "wouldn't it be amazing to just live on the Citadel or just take a ship to Omega? That makes sense."
His comments were made as BioWare announced that there will be no multiplayer in Mass Effect 3.
There will, however, be deeper RPG and equipment/weapon customisation elements in the third game. You'll also witness the return of familiar faces - Ashley Williams and Kaidan Alenko included.

Research firm predicts five-fold increase thanks to cross promotions and microtransactions
The global market for social games is expected to create revenues of over $5 billion by the end of 2015.
That’s according to research firm Parks Associates’ latest report, Social Gaming: Market Updates, in which the company claims the market is on course for a five-fold increase between 2010 and 2015, according to GI.biz.
The firm also claims that more than 250 million people currently play titles such as Zynga’s FarmVille and CityVille.
Key growth drivers were identified as increased monetisation through microstransactions and cross-promotions with mainstream brands such as McDonald’s and 7-Eleven.
Parks Associates also cited social games developers ability to respond to user data and feedback.
“The abilities to measure the efficacy of different gameplay mechanisms, to tweak game design in near-real time, and to test new models are advantages that traditional gaming companies will never have,” the firm said.
“Zynga’s huge market share is the best proof of the competitive advantage made possible by properly leveraging consumer data.”

Microsoft's next Windows could be a cross-platform OS in the style of Apple's iOS or Hewlett-Packard's webOS, if supposed early builds are to be believed... "Bloggers Rafael Rivera and Paul Thurrott, in a series of April postings on Rivera’s Within Windows blog, have described the various features of what they claim is an early build of Windows 8: an Office-style ribbon integrated into Windows Explorer, complete with tools for viewing libraries, manipulating images and managing drive assets; an unlock screen that harkens to the 'Metro' design style already present in Windows Phone 7; an 'immersive' user interface and a built-in PDF reader they call 'Modern Reader.'"http://tech.slashdot.org/story/11/04...etitor---EWeek

Pre-purchase a PC copy of forthcoming action RPG Dungeon Siege III via Steam and you'll get the first two games in the series for free, publisher Square Enix has announced.
You'll be able to download and play Dungeon Siege I and Dungeon Siege II as soon as you've placed your order for the impending sequel.
"Providing Dungeon Siege I and Dungeon Siege II free of charge through Steamworks is Square Enix's way of showing appreciation to the fans of the Dungeon Siege franchise," said the game's executive producer David Hoffman.
Square also revealed that all PC versions of the game will include full Steamworks integration, including auto-updating, Steam Achievements and Steam Cloud support.
The Obsidian-developed title ventures out onto PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 from 17th June.
Earlier this week the developer revealed first details of the game's co-op features, which allows players to vote on the outcome of key story decisions.

The downloadable Dark Angels add-on for Dawn of War II: Retribution was supposed to be a free bonus for Collector's Edition buyers.
That's still the case, providing you live in the US and you bought the Collector's Edition from the US THQ Store.
Those outside of the US, however, have found out that Dark Angels isn't free at all - it costs £4.99.
"I can confirm this is the case," wrote DOWII forum moderator Hirmetrium.
"If you have received a code via PM on these forums, and live outside of the US, it was unintended.
"I would rather you heard it from THQ/Relic than me, so there you have it."
Hirmetrium added: "The reasoning behind this is that North American customers suffered a delay in shipping (which they paid for) and this is their compensation."
The Dark Angels DLC was released for Dawn of War II: Retribution on Wednesday. It adds the Dark Angels faction to the strategy game.

Attractive Russian free-to-play MMO Allods Online launches across Europe on 11th May, Gala Networks has announced.
Anyone who played through beta and reached level 30 will be rewarded with "a visually stunning halo buff". Anyone who climbed to level 35 or higher will receive "an extra shoulder award". That's probably not an actual third shoulder; more likely shoulder armour.
With the official Allods Online launch arrives update Volume 4: Astral Odyssey, which hoists the game's level cap to 47 and opens two new geographical zones to nose around.
Volume 4 serves as a reminder that much has changed since Eurogamer turned up a 6/10 for Allods Online a year ago, praising the presentation but critiquing its soul.
Yet for the cost of air, it's worth a try.

Such is the scale of the Minecraft phenomenon that it's easy to forget the game is still in beta. Well, developer Mojang has finally put a date on when the official 'finished' version will be available: 11th November 2011.
Creator Markus 'Notch' Persson made the announcement on his blog, explaining that the final game shouldn't differ too much from what you're playing now.
"It's a bit tricky to really do a release for Minecraft as we keep updating it all the time," he wrote.
"For one, the version we deem as the 'full version' won't be very different at all from what the game was like a week ago, and we'll keep adding features after the release as well, so it's really more of a milestone when we finally get rid of the beta label, and some kind of goal for us to work towards.
"The plan is to be open with this and try to get people to cheer us on as much as possible, but to be open with the fact that the game won't change much at the actual release day.
"It's the same date as a few other games and movies, and the one I'm the most excited about is Skyrim," he added, "so that will be a nice reward for me if we actually manage to hit that date!"
Notch certainly deserves a victory lap - earlier this week he revealed that the game has brought in around £20 million in revenue so far.

April 8th, 2011, 02:00 Posted By: wraggster
MMO The Secret World will have to be "a different game" to work on consoles, Funcom has told Eurogamer.
That's assuming the PC game becomes "a huge success" and justifies the continuation of the console project in the first place.
"We are focusing on the PC version right now," writer/director Ragnar Tornquist explained. "That is our primary market and we want that version to be as good as possible.
"I've been very vocal in saying that when - I guess also if - we have a console version of The Secret World, it's not going to be exactly the same game. I don't think that fits. I don't think console gamers sitting on the couch in front of a big TV want to play the exactly same game as they would on their PC with a mouse and keyboard. That doesn't compute - that doesn't work.
"You need to create a different gameplay experience," he added. "You can still have the same setting, you can still have the same philosophies, the same basic systems. But you really need to make a different game. How different that will be, it's hard to say."
"I think it will only happen if The Secret World turns out to be ... a huge success."
Ragnar Tornquist
Tornquist revealed that he has had "a team" working on an Xbox 360 version of The Secret World "specifically". He made no mention of PS3.
"Right now we're not focusing on [the Xbox 360 game]," he said. "It is a challenge, and it's a challenge because neither Microsoft nor Sony has made great strides to open up the platforms to MMOs. Sony has definitely done some experiments with DC Universe, which has worked quite well.
Tornquist reiterated: "It's not something we're focusing on now. I think it will only happen if The Secret World turns out to be - as of course it hopefully is - a huge success. We will want to do things on other platforms; we will want to expand the universe. But it won't be the same game."
Eurogamer published a preview of The Secret World this afternoon, along with an exclusive interview with game writer/director Ragnar Tornquist.
