An anonymous reader tips an article about 'consolitis,' the term given to game design decisions made for the console thatspill over and negatively impact the PC versions of video games."Perhaps the most obvious indicator of consolitis, a poor control scheme can single-handedly ruin the PC version of a game and should become apparent after a short time spent playing. Generally this has to do with auto-aim in a shooter or not being able to navigate menus with the mouse. Also, not enough hotkeys in an RPG — that one’s really annoying. ... Possibly the most disastrous outcome of an industry-wide shift to console-oriented development is that technological innovation will be greatly slowed. Though a $500+ video card is considered top of the line, a $250 one will now play pretty much any game at the highest settings with no problem. (Maybe that’s what everyone wanted?) Pretty soon, however, graphics chip makers won’t be able to sustain their rate of growth because the software is so far behind, which will be bad for gamers on consoles as well as PC."http://games.slashdot.org/story/11/0...ith-Consolitis

Taiwanese phone manufacturer HTC is to pick up a $40 million stake in cloud-gaming firm OnLIve.
HTC will acquire 5.3 million shares in OnLive, at a cost of $7.50 each. This is not the first big-name investment in OnLive - the US streaming tech is already backed by the likes of BT, Warner Bros and AT&T.
OnLive, which makes high-end games playable on low-end PCs and Macs by streaming them as compressed video from remote servers, recently released a flat-rate subscription, enabling unlimited access to its older games for $10 per month.
The "ability to deliver optimized content in the future will be a key asset as content becomes more and more complex and localized," HTC chief executive Peter Chou told the Wall Street Journal.
The Taipei firm also revealed plans to acquire London mobile content outfit Saffron Digital. The latter provides services to the likes of Nokia, LG, Sony Ericsson and Samsung, and has clients in some 26 nations.
HTC, which makes Android and WIndows 7-based phones, recently saw its fourth quarter profits double year-on-year to $504 million.

A Chinese theme park featuring lavish Warcraft and StarCraft themed areas may be in development.
Dubbed Joyland, the theme park opens in May, according to the official website.
But there are no pictures of construction, only concept art - shouldn't a project on that scale, four months from completion, be a lot better documented? Some of the illustrated architecture appears to be of bamboozling complexity and ambition. Floating World of Warcraft dungeon Naxxramas is depicted in one shot - a castle atop an inverse pyramid, it's point secured by four great chains on each corner of the floating island.
Why wouldn't Blizzard have mentioned such a project? Presumably licensing talks were held.
Look more closely, and it's not at all clear whether Joyland actually exists in the real world - is this a giant virtual theme park? Sketchy translations of the Chinese website don't help.
Nevertheless, the areas mentioned for Joyland on the website are "Hero Gate", "Taobao Avenue," "Mysterious Island", "Moore Park", "Legend of the world", "Star Legend", "the mainland of Warcraft", "play family fun in Hong Kong" and "Temple Mount".
French website Gameblog (via G4TV) translated those areas as Terrain of Warcraft, Universe of StarCraft, Island of Mystery, World of Legend (a Chinese MMO) and Molesworld.
Joyland also plans to house a giant e-sports centre that aims to become a trade expo destination.

BlizzCon 2011 will take place on October 21-22, 2011, at the usual venue of the Anaheim Convention Centre, Anaheim, California.
The event is centred around the fan communities which have grown around Blizzard's three major IPs: Warcraft, Starcraft and Diablo. Usually, the conference will feature several fan-led events, as well as hands-on with the latest builds of forthcoming games, panel discussions with various Blizzard staff and competitions, such as the ever popular cosplay event.
"We look forward to holding another exciting BlizzCon this year, filled with some great entertainment and competition, as well as the latest news about Blizzard games," said Blizzard CEO and co-founder, Mike Morhaime.
"BlizzCon is built from the ground up with our community in mind - we're pleased to be able to host an event where players can come together to have fun and celebrate their passion for gaming."
Tickets for the hugely popular conference usually sell out within a matter of miuntes, and Blizzard often reserves important announcements and reveals for the show by way of rewarding fans for their loyalty. Last year, StarCraft 2 was a prominent subject, as was Diablo 3, which is likely to dominate the schedule for this year.
Ticket numbers and pricing are yet to be confirmed, but details will be published on the Blizzard websiteonce available.

Microsoft showed off a copy of the firm's Office 2007 stamped with the logo of the Mexican 'La Familia' drug cartel at counterfeiting conference in Paris.
The counterfeit software was reportedly found for sale in Mexico and the La Familia cartel logo proved a link between the organised crime group and a growing counterfeiting operation, according to a Bloomberg report.
Accusations of La Familia piracy first appeared with a NY Times report last year describing the group's move into counterfeit software as a "low-risk, high-profit complement to drugs, bribery and kidnapping."
"This is the real side, the scary side of counterfeiting and it plagues the world," said Microsoft antipiracy lawyer David Finn, showing off the La Familia branded disk at Global Congress on Combating Counterfeiting and Piracy in Paris.
Finn also warned of the security dangers of using counterfeit software, claiming that 70 per cent of computers in China are infected with viruses and that this was a "direct result" of purchasing pirated and fake products, he said.

News via AEP
A new beta version of OpenTTD has been released. OpenTTD is a clone of the Microprose game "Transport Tycoon Deluxe", a popular game originally written by Chris Sawyer. It attempts to mimic the original game as closely as possible while extending it with new features.
Quote:
1.1.0-beta5 (2011-02-04) - Feature: GUI setting to disable reversing at signals (r21962)
- Feature: Not loading and not unloading is now possible (r21961)
- Change: [NewGRF] Disable the flipping of train engines/wagons in the depot by default for NewGRFs [FS#4462] (r21966)
- Change: Show the length of vehicles in tiles, instead of half tiles in the depot (r21960)
- Change: Replace longbridges settings with custom maximum bridge and tunnel length setting (r21959)
- Change: Randomize the vehicle a small UFO targets, do not use the one with lowest index (r21949)
- Fix: Do not count the number of vehicles but the length of vehicles to (configurably) limit train length [FS#4461] (r21960)
- Fix: [NewGRF] Reset the carry flag every 4 bytes in Action 6 when adding more than one variable (r21951)
- Fix: Road vehicle was moved under the bridge when it was destroyed by an UFO while on a bridge (r21948)
- Fix: Crash when converting a savegame with vehicles crashed in a tunnel entry, or with vehicles reversing there (r21947)
- Fix: Funny behaviour when a road vehicle reverses while overtaking, so abort the overtake attempt when reversing the road vehicle [FS#4447] (r21946)
- Fix: Not all vehicles should be tested to be inside a tunnel upon savegame load [FS#4460] (r21940)
- Fix: Do not remove existing road/tram bits when overbuilding stops of the opposite road type [FS#4457] (r21936)
- Fix: Allow to overbuild road stops which are built over trams (r21935)
- Fix: Automatic orders behave now stable wrt. service orders and are not added or removed depending on the need of servicing [FS#4440] (r21933)
- Fix: The town window would not be invalidated in the scenario editor if the ground changed and thus the required cargos for town growth [FS#4554] (r21929)
- Fix: Converting an expensive rail type to a cheap one could give more money than removing and rebuilding cost (r21919)
- Fix: Languages improperly sorted in the ´start server´ window [FS#4443] (r21918)
- Fix: the minimum speed needed for (realistic) acceleration to work properly can sometimes be more than the (temporary) maximum speed causing Clamp to ´fail´. Make sure that the minimum speed always overrules the maximum speed [FS#4442] (r21916)
- Fix: Include the capacity of non-refittable vehicles in the refitted-capacity, if their cargo matches (r21904)
- Fix: Do not count articulated parts when passing the number of vehicles to refit to the command. That may exceed 8 bits (r21902)
- Fix: [NoAI] Hide automatic orders from AIs as they have no way of dealing with them (r21900)
- Fix: Do not show a vehicle selection in the RefitWindow for refit orders. You cannot select anything anyway (r21899)
- Fix: Using a pointer-iterator and adding things (thus reallocating) to the iterated array caused OpenTTD to crash on invalid pointers [FS#4438] (r21898)
- Fix: Only some scenarios from the main scenario folder and no heightmaps could be started in the ´start server´ window [FS#4421] (r21892)

- Fix: When a single-vehicle train was reversed while on a slope, its GOINGUP/DOWN were not swapped (r21874)
- Remove: Settings for vehicle speed in the vehicle view, long date in status bar, drawing of bridge pillars, support for depot orders, time tabling and joining of stations upon building (r21958, r21957, r21956, r21955, r21954)
- Remove: The non-uniform stations setting; it has been broken for over a year, and thus not used [FS#4456] (r21953)

You're probably a lot like us: more handsome and socially adept, naturally, but with a similar fear of robots and penchant for living fast and loose with pre-release developer builds. As such, the latest changes to the stable release of the Chrome browser won't be of much use to you. Nevertheless, Google's official window to the web was just injected with a speed bump, 3D WebGL graphics, Google Chrome Instant search results, and the Chrome Web Store already available in Chrome's beta channel. If nothing else, please, we beg you, do the right thing and inform the local luddite.

Google will pay $20,000 to the first to exploit its Chrome browser at this year's Pwn2Own hacking contest at CanSecWest in Vancouver, BC, on March 9. At this year's Pwn2Own, researchers will pit exploits against machines running Windows 7 or Mac OS X as they try to bring down Microsoft's IE, Mozilla's Firefox, Apple's Safari and Chrome. The first researchers to hack IE, Firefox and Safari will receive $15,000 and the machine running the browser. The prizes are $5,000 more than those given for exploiting browsers at the last Pwn2Own contest, and three times more than the 2009 awards. 'We've upped the ante this time around and the total cash pool allotted for prizes has risen to a whopping $125,000,' said Aaron Portnoy, the manager of the sponsor, HP TippingPoint's security research team, which set the contest's rules Wednesday in a blog post written by Portnoy.http://it.slashdot.org/story/11/02/0...rome-Win-20000

AMD has released reducing pricing for the Intel rival's range of desktop Phenom II processors including four and six-core models.
The firm's six-core AMD Phenom II X6 1100T Black Edition dropped by nearly 10 per cent and is now priced at $239 in volume. Meanwhile the cheapest six-core processor, the Phenom II X6 1055T was slashed by an even greater 12 per cent and is now priced at $175.
The price cuts to the AMD Phenom II processors comes at a time when arch rival Intel suffered a serious blow to the roll out of the firm's Sandy Bridge platform with the 6-series support chipset flaw halting the flow of Sandy Bridge compatible mainboards.
With price cuts across the range of competing processors between 5 per cent and 13 per cent, AMD look set to capitalise on Intel's Sandy Bridge misfortune.
Intel woes aside, the aggressive pricing of chips such as the AMD Phenom II X6 1055T signals the introduction of six-core processor power into the mainstream PC market.

Cloud gaming firm OnLive has opened up its previously-announced $10 per month subscription service.
The PlayPack sub allows infinite access to a significant portion of OnLive's games, rather than paying per game. Currently, 38 titles are offered, all of which are over six months old, and some of them several years.
Included are Bioshock, Frontlines: Fuel of War, Supreme Commander Forged Alliance, NBA 2K10, Tomb Raider: Underworld, Unreal Tournament 3 and LEGO Batman. More contemporaneous games must be bought or rented seperately, though OnLive plans to expand the PlayPack over time.

OnLive may have its long-term sights on entertainment besides games, especially with the hiring of Pandora executive Etienne Handman, but for now the cloud-based service is laser focused on taking a chunk of the games market. It has launched a Netflix-inspired all-you-can-eat plan for $9.99/month. 'The meteoric growth of Netflix reflects the enormous consumer demand for flat-rate instant-play media,' said Steve Perlman, OnLive Founder and CEO. 'OnLive PlayPack is uniquely positioned to address this demand in the realm of high-performance video games, instantly delivering games ... to TVs, PCs, Macs and iPad, and soon Android tablets, smartphones and Blu-ray players.

February 2nd, 2011, 12:38 Posted By: wraggster
Frogster COO Dirk Weyel has told GamesIndustry.biz that he believes that the western MMO market will be dominated by the free-to-play model, although subscription-based titles will always have their place.
Weyel, who's company is launching the subscription-based MMO, TERA in Europe this year, also revealed that he sees TERA as the premium product in Frogster's portfolio, a fact which justifies the monthly price-tag, but doesn't see think free-to-play games should be of any lower quality - something which he doesn't think many journalists appreciate.
"It was difficult at the beginning because the opinion of many games journalists was that free-to-play means lower quality," Weyel told GamesIndustry.biz as part of today's interview.
"We tried to show them that it's just another business model. So we started to market the game with a premium branding approach. So we think that in order to be successful in the long run we need to build brands and have a clear positioning and a clear brand philosophy to build up the game.
"We generally believe that free-to-play system will be the model for most of the MMOs in the future, but we also believe that the subscription model does still work. There will be subscription models in the future, and also hybrid models. We believe that TERA is the most premium title of all the games we have at the moment. In terms of production budget and quality in-game it's certainly the premium product for this year.
"That's why we're convinced that the subscription model can work for a title like TERA. I think free-to-play will be a model which will dominate the West, but I think there will also be a few subscription titles which can be successful."
Over the course of the last 18 months, a number of large scale MMOs have switched payment models from subscription to free-to-play, with varying degrees of success. For some, such as Lord of the Rings Online, it's been a masterstroke, with revenues trebling after the change.
There's a very big acid-test on the horizon for the survival of the subscription model, in the shape of EA and Lucasarts' Star Wars: The Old Republic - but does Weyel believe that game can take a bite out of World of Warcraft's audience, and would that be a good thing for the industry as a whole?
"I would say that the good thing about it would be that it's a non-fantasy title. If it can prove that a non-fantasy title can regain a big consumer base and user base. I think if you ask industry people about their opinions about the chances of success though, they'll be very diverse.
"I would say it would be a good sign. I think it would show that there are a lot of users out there willing to pay a certain amount of money each month for a good game.
"Basically, it's going to be interesting. There's Eve Online, but apart from that, the subscription-based model is dominated by fantasy role-playing games."
It's not something which Bigpoint CEO, and Frogster rival, Heiko Hubertz thinks is likely to happen - he told press last October that he can't see the MMO becoming profitable at all, despite his chairman Simon Guild's belief that the future will include subscription-based games.
"If you look at a game like Star Wars from EA and BioWare, they estimated a development budget of more than $100 million. This is an online game for many million of subscribers, so a big publisher does not understand that a subscription model is not the future," said Hubertz.
"With micro-transactions and longer lifetime maybe I see a chance for this game but I don't think that EA or BioWare will be profitable with this game. Ever."

Electronic Arts upcoming MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic can reach profitability with 500,000 subscribers, according the CEO John Riccitiello.
Speaking in a conference call to investors, he said that half a million subscribers would be "substantially profitable, but it's not the sort of thing we would write home about."
"Anything north of one million subscribers is a very profitable business," continued Riccitiello. "Essentially it turns on a dime from being quite sharply negative in terms of its EPS impact to positive the day the product ships."
Earlier in the call Riccitiello had said EA is "incurring significant development costs" for the Star Wars MMO, which is expected to be released in 2011, although after the close of the financial year.
But he was also critical of reports in the press speculating on the costs of the game, in development at BioWare, which CFO Eric Brown has previously described as the "largest ever development project, period, in the history of the company."
"There's been a fair amount of talk on various blogs, describing spends that are vastly higher than anything we've ever put in place. After a couple of months in beta, OnLive's PlayPack plan, which offers unlimited access to a selection of titles on the service for $10 a month, has officially launched. Saying that "the meteoric growth of Netflix reflects the enormous consumer demand for flat-rate instant-play media," company CEO and founder Steve Perlman made no secret of the company's inspiration for PlayPack when commenting on its official debut.
OnLive hopes to grow the PlayPack selection with "premium, indie and classic games" on "a regular basis," with new additions being selected in part based on feedback from subscribers to the plan. The day one lineup of 38 games can be found after the break, and includes some titles that are entirely new to the service, most notably the original BioShock.
