As reported over at Phoronix, the Direct X 11 API now has an open source implementation on top of Gallium3d which should ease porting of games to Linux with or without Wine. While still in its infancy, you can see where this is heading. All this while Microsoft hasn't offered DX11 for their own aging WindowsXP. Could it be that Linux may soon support this Microsoft API better than Microsoft itself?"

A new report from American stat analysis group NPD suggests that the value of digital PC games market is now far greater than the boxed sector.
The numbers claims that 11.2m PC games were purchased in North America between January and June 2010. In the same period just 8.2m boxed PC games were purchased at retail.
However, the good news for bricks and mortar retail is that the real money remains in physical product – in total dollar revenue terms traditional retail still accounts for 57 per cent of the market.

Most browser benchmarks are isolated, artificial tests that can be gamed by browser vendors optimizing those specific cases. With only those benchmarks to go on, the folks at LucidChart were skeptical that the IE9 beta would actually outperform other modern browsers in real-world applications. To separate hype from reality, they built their first browser benchmarking tool, based in LucidChart itself. This benchmark is to SunSpider what a Left4Dead 2 benchmark is to 3Dmark Vantage. Product specs don't matter, only real-world performance on a real-world application. The results were surprising. IE9 held its own pretty well (with a few caveats), and the latest Firefox 4 beta came in dead last.

The social gaming market will continue to be driven by Facebook and PC for some time, says Trip Hawkins, boss of publisher Digital Chocolate.
"Anyone who thinks it is easier to make money on the iPhone or Android rather than on Facebook is wrong," he tells ME.
"The mobile infrastructure, social features and web device population are just not there yet, and it will take some time. Mobile games will become more social but it is a rope that a game publisher cannot push right now."
Digital Chocolate continues to release games for iPhone and mobile platforms, but its focus has diversified with a series of popular Facebook games too.
"Inevitably and eventually, the mobile side will be huge, but it's not now and it's not even next," he says.
"It's still going to be Facebook and the PC for a while longer."
Companies like ngmoco have focused on trying to make freemium social games take off on iPhone, while Facebook giant Zynga recently brought its Farmville game to Apple's platform.
Meanwhile, Gameloft is the latest mobile publisher to dip its toes in the Facebook waters, with the launch of the Farmville-esque Green Farm.
Hawkins thinks that publishers are too quick to swing between the merits of one platform and another.
"Too many people are running from one side of the boat to the other, and back again!" he says.

Today we released OpenTTD 1.0.4. Nothing seriously was reported since the release candidate, and as we are confident the testers did a good job, we are also confident that it is a nice release!
Note that there is a new translation available in the release: You can now also enjoy OpenTTD in Belarusian. A good moment to thank all translators continuously maintaining and updating the translations.

Adobe seems to have made an about face regarding their support for native 64-bit Linux support for Flash today, and released a new preview Flash plugin named 'Square.' This includes a native 64-bit version for Linux, which I have verified works on my Debian Lenny LTSP server by simply copying libflashplayer.so to /usr/lib/iceweasel/plugins — with sound (which I was never able to figure out with running the 32-bit version with nspluginwrapper and pulseaudio).

Those who have written off IE as being slow and old-looking are in for a surprise. The just-released Internet Explorer 9 beta is dramatically faster than its predecessor, sports an elegant, stripped-down interface and adds some useful new features, writes Preston Gralla. Even more surprising than the stripped-down interface is IE9 beta's speed. Internet Explorer has long been the slowest browser by a wide margin. IE9 has turned that around in dramatic fashion, using hardware acceleration and a new JavaScript engine it calls Chakra, which compiles scripts in the background and uses multiple processor cores. In this beta, my tests show it overtaking Firefox for speed, and putting up a respectable showing against Safari, Opera and Chrome. It's even integrated into Windows 7. One big problem: It will not work on Windows XP. So, forget the performance and security boost, many enterprises and netbook users.

The Insignia Infocast is a $169 simple media device being sold at Best Buy. Marketed as a way to share photos and run Chumby apps, hackers are starting to release packages to extend its features. [Bunnie] shows us one package in particular that allows it to be used as a web browser with an external keyboard. With an 800Mhz processor, an 800×600 touch screen, and 2 GB of memory, we can see that this is just scratching the surface of what is possible. [Bunnie] points out that some people are working on porting Android to the device, and if you really feel adventurous, you can dig into the hardware.

We all knew today was the day, but just in case you've been zoned out in Kauai the past few weeks, Microsoft's getting set to release its refreshed build of Internet Explorer to the general public today. IE9 Beta is said to be a beta that's essentially done, so you shouldn't have too much to fear when the download links go live later today. The crew at Redmond claims that it's far more compliant with HTML5, CSS3 and SVG2 standards, and that it's the only game in town with full hardware acceleration. Keep an eye on that source link for a shot at downloading your copy later today, and if you're terrified of offending your existing Firefox or Chrome installation, we'll do you one better -- our own in-depth review will be going live in a matter of hours.

It seems Google's bug bounty program is paying some nice dividends, for both sides. Less than two weeks after releasing version 6.0 of its Chrome browser, Google has pushed out another Chrome release, which includes fixes for 10 security bugs, seven of which are rated either critical or high. Google Chrome 6.0.472.59 comes out just 12 days after the last Chrome release, which fixed 14 security bugs. As part of its bug bounty program, Google paid out $4,000 in rewards to researchers who disclosed security flaws in the browser. Most of the security flaws fixed in the new release are in the Windows version of Chrome, but the most serious bug is only in Chrome for Mac.

A fresh question mark hangs over the viability of the pre-owned software market this morning after a ruling in the US Court of Appeal upheld a developer’s right to prevent the resale of its software.
Gamasutra reports that Autodesk has successfully won a case in which defendant Timothy Vernor had been arguing for his right to buy and use a pre-owned copy of design program AutoCAD.
Vernor acquired the software in an office sale and then listed it for sale on eBay along with a serial number.
Autodesk, however, argued that its End User License Agreement states that the software is licensed, and that the licence itself was non-transferable. It also states that if the user chooses to upgrade the program older versions should be destroyed.
The defendant, however, argued that since he had not agreed to any licence the conditions should not apply to him.
In 2008 a US Court ruled in Vernor’s favour, but following an appeal from Autodesk that ruling has now been overturned.

Microsoft has urged Windows users to block ongoing attacks against Adobe's popular PDF viewer by deploying one of Microsoft's enterprise tools. Adobe echoed Microsoft's advice, saying the Enhanced Migration Experience Toolkit (EMET) would stymie attacks targeting Reader and Acrobat. Called 'scary' and 'clever,' the in-the-wild exploit went public last week when security researcher Mila Parkour reported it to Adobe after analyzing a rogue PDF document attached to spam. Adobe first warned users Wednesday of the threat, but at the time gave users no advice on how to protect themselves until a patch was ready. Microsoft stepped in on Friday. 'The good news is that if you have EMET enabled ... it blocks this exploit,' said Fermin Serna and Andrew Roths, two engineers with the Microsoft Security Response Center in an entry on the group's blog."
A Symantec blog post suggests the people exploiting this vulnerability may be the 'Aurora' group responsible for the attacks on Google late last year.

Google is co-hosting a new HTML5 Game Jam event – a foretoken perhaps to the search engine giant’s preferred web format as the world waits for it to launch its new social game business.
The company has been on an acquisition spree of late, buying up game studios in what is thought to part of a wider plan to become Facebook’s biggest rival in the social space.
Supporting HTML5 could be key in Google’s poorly-shrouded intent to bring gaming to its web browser, Chrome, as well as Android phones and even Apple devices.
The company will be co-hosting the HTML5 Game Jam event along with Spil Games, a casual game group that recently overhauled its entire web presence to support the HTML5 standard.
The value of HTML5 has routinely been discussed in contrast to Adobe’s Flash platform, chiefly because the latter is blocked on Apple’s iOS devices in favour of the former.
The HTML5 Game Jam takes place in Hilversum, The Netherlands, on the weekend of October 9-10, 2010. It will see 80 developers pitch ideas, crack into programming, and end the marathon event with a short presentation.
“This game jam is the latest development in our HTML5 strategy, and we're thrilled to work with Google on this,”said Peter Driessen, CEO of Spil Games.
“An open, free weekend of hardcore coding fits perfectly in our strategy to unite the world in play, and we can't wait to see what comes out of the weekend.”
