Rumors have been flying around about a subscription-based Call of Duty game for some time now -- Activision boss Bobby Kotick loves the idea, because he loves money, and the company's other subscription-based game, World of Warcraft, is quite the cash-printing machine. So why not go down that road?
Many still believe Activision will, including Janco Partners analyst Mike Hickey. With the publisher's plans to break into China and Korea, Hickey told IndustryGamers he sees Call of Duty as the perfect platform for accomplishing that goal and strengthening ties with NetEase, the online powerhouse of the Chinese market. "We expect the Company [NetEase] could extend their relationship with Activision Blizzard, by establishing an additional license to operate Call of Duty Online in China and Blizzard's unannounced MMO, which will likely leverage their Battle.net platform," he said. "The eventuality of COD in China could bring an additional +$50 to +$100 million in sales and +$0.15 to +$0.30 in EPS in its first year of operation." EPS, to clarify, is short for "earnings per share."
Who knows what's in store for the future, but for now, rest assured: you won't ever have to fork over extra cash to play Modern Warfare 2 online.

Worms will make a glorious 2D return to PC on 26th August with Worms: Reloaded. It's been 10 years since a new 2D game has come out on PC, apparently.
Perhaps that's why Worms: Reloaded will cost £17.99 (£16.19 for the time being on Steam).
Thankfully, Reloaded boasts loads of content. Graphics are HD and Worms has "never looked this good", reckons the press release.
There are 65 single-player missions split into normal and tougher Warzone levels. There's also a Bodycount mode that pits one worm against a never ending spawn of enemies and records success to leaderboards. On top of that are modes Forts, Crate/Shopper, Bazooka and Grenade (BnG), and Rope Racing.
Customisation spans skin, victory gravestones, voices, HUD, title, hats, and you'll be able to buy treats with currency earned for progressing in the single-player game.
There's also multiplayer, of course - either locally or online for four people.
Weapons from Worms' past are all stuffed in the warchest, as well as new additions Super Punk Buster, Poison Strike, Worship, Sentry Gun, Electromagnet and Buffalo of Lies.
Rounding the package off is a landscape editor, which enables maps to be made and shared with friends.

The UK government has responded to a petition encouraging government departments to move away from IE6 that had over 6,000 signatories. Their response seems to be that a fully patched IE6 is perfectly safe as long as firewalls and malware scanning tools are in place, and that mandating an upgrade away from IE6 will be too expensive. The second part is fair enough in this age of austerity (I'd rather have my taxes spent on schools and hospitals than software upgrade testing at the moment), but the whole reaction will be a disappointment to the petitioners."

The Vietnamese government has placed heavy restrictions on the playing and availability of online games, in response to public and media concern about their effects on the nation's youth.
The Ministry of Information and Communication has banned the advertisement of MMOs, and demanded that ISPs turn off internet access to game shops and cafes after hours.
It will also stop licensing further online games until the sign-off of further government legislation, reports the Associated Press. Currently, 93 games - all developed outside of Vietnam - are licensed, with the most successful titles drawing around 200,000 players.
The bans come in the wake of a number of murders and robberies incited by online conflict and desire for virtual items. In one instance, a 15-year-old girl attacked a local four-year-old, reportedly to obtain $10 for microtransactions. The girl was sentenced to ten years in prison.
The Ministry is also seeking to limit violent and pornographic content in games, in addition to the censoring of any government criticism.

The newly added Dual Blade character in Nexon America’s MapleStory offers new skills for players to learn and acquire, making gameplay exciting and new. Hidden somewhere deep in Kerning Square, Dual Blades meet at the Secret Garden and pledge their loyalty to Lady Syl, who seeks revenge for her father’s untimely death.
Along with being armed with a blade in each hand, Dual Blade characters are outfitted with a whole range of skills, becoming more and more dangerous with each job advancement. As beginners, players will be able to master skills like Three Snails and Agile Body, which allow them ranged attacks and quicker movement.
Through specialization, players will be able to acquire numerous higher level attack skills such as Final Cut, Mirror Image, Sudden Raid, Flying Assaulter and Chains of hell. Each of these skills, along with many others, allows Dual Blades to inflict progressively more elaborate attacks to multiple enemies at a certain range.
In addition to attack skills, Dual Blades increase their defense skills as they advance. The skill, Disorder, causes aggressive enemies to stop attacking. Dark Sight allows players to hide in the shadows, but can’t attack unsuspecting enemies until they acquire Advanced Dark Sight.
To create your own Dual Blade character and acquire these skills and more, visit: http://maplestory.nexon.net. Join other fans at www.facebook.com/maplestory.

July 30th, 2010, 16:19 Posted By: wraggster
2010 Major Tournament of Online Street Basketball Freestyle, provided by global game portal, GameKiss, is to be held starting the first day of August. This Major Tournament is the second tournament hosted by GameKiss following 2010 Rookie Tournament which was held in June.
While the previous Rookie Tournament was mainly aimed to promote friendship amongst beginners and rookie users under level 15, upcoming Major Tournament is designed for the skilled users over level 16 to fully exhibit their skills that they have refined at Freestyle.
In this tournament, major users (Level 16 through 30) and All-star users (Level 31 through 45) will be competed separately considering the gaps in the ability of characters between them. Especially for All-star users, a private channel specifically designed for the Major Tournament is to be implemented for the competition.
“This upcoming tournament has been prepared to provide fairer competition in order to thank the users at the last Rookie Tournament for their tremendous support,” said ‘Joey,’ Main GM of FS. “Especially with private channel for the league, all characters logged into the channel are to have their ability value set at level 42, which assures all users to compete against each other solely based on their skills,” added ‘Joey.”
This Major Tournament is also to be held while separating preliminary rounds and the final round in addition to a separation of sections according to user’s level. By having winners from preliminary rounds to compete against each other at final round, it is expected to find out who the true champion of GameKiss Freestyle is in the end.
Upcoming Major Tournament is featured with far richer rewards comparing to the Rookie Tournament. Those who qualified through preliminary rounds are guaranteed for $60 dollar worth GameKiss cash, and the Champion Team winning the final round will be awarded with $150 dollar worth GameKiss cash along with VIP + package and costume item at their choice. The result of each game will be posted through GameKiss website, and the Champion Team is to have additional bonus of a priority right to participate future tournament and league competition.
For further information of upcoming Major Tournament, deciding a true champion of GameKiss Freestyle, please visit the official website of Freestyle at http://freestyle.gamekiss.com.

Brighton based publishers Lace Mamba Global today announce their upcoming adventure RHEM 4: The Golden Fragments will be released today via all major digital networks.

Frogster has just released a brand new trailer for the Hack-and-Slay Action-MMORPG, Mythos, which is due to be launched in 2011. The video introduces players to the world of Mythos and will also be integrated into the game as the opening video. It tells a tale of trust, betrayal, destruction and revenge.
In times past, four races formed an alliance based on the promise of peace and cooperation – the cyclopes, the humans, the gremlins and the satyrs. However, some human mercenaries were possessed by greed. They attacked the cyclops village and razed it to the ground in a merciless battle for a mysterious green gem – the eye of Crom the cyclops – which they then stole. After their bloody victory the human mercenaries proceeded further into the Evergreen Pasture to wreak more havoc using the power of the green gem. However, one brave Cyclops survived the battle and was overcome with grief after the massive betrayal of trust within the once strong alliance. Consumed by sorrow and driven by rage, he resolved to hunt down the human mercenaries and avenge the honor of the alliance. This is where players will delve into the history of this mythical land through a quest series by supporting the cyclops warrior in his fight for justice and to avert further catastrophe in the world of Mythos.
Mythos is set for release in early 2011. A newsletter is available on the official website for those wishing to know more, you can register here: www.mythos-europe.com.

Zeno Clash developer ACE Team believes PC owners are "more open" to weird game concepts.
Speaking to Eurogamer, co-founder Carlos Bordeu said that may have been the reason Zeno Clash struggled on Xbox Live Arcade.
"I don't know whether it was because most people had already played Zeno Clash on PC, or that the console game launched a year later, but we definitely had much stronger sales on PC than on Xbox 360," Bordeu revealed. "It hasn't sold nearly as well."
"Zeno Clash was definitely weirder than most games, and it would be absurd to think that didn't put-off some people.
"PC players are maybe more open to trying weird games - games that aren't so mass market," he added. "But I don't know that I'd put it as harshly as PC gamers are smart and console gamers are stupid."
Bordeu accidentally let slip that "maybe we might get a nice surprise later this year when we might have some sort of price promotion [for Zeno Clash on XBLA]". Maybe I shouldn't be saying that," he quickly added, "as it's not confirmed."
He went on to point out that Zeno Clash had "extremely good" sales in Russia, where everybody is mad.
Zeno Clash is a brutal first-person brawler that caught attention for its strikingly original world, where trees, bushes and architecture bulge with Gaudi-like charm - not to mention its unusual cast lead by hermaphroditic central character Father-Mother. The game remains a staggering achievement for a team with a core of four (and at most seven contributors).
The original PC release of Zeno Clash happened in April 2009. The game was enhanced with co-op among other things for Xbox Live Arcade a year later. Dan Pearson assessed the PC game and Christian Donlan appraised the XBLA version.
Chilean dev ACE Team is currently hard at work on Rock of Ages, a tower defence-style game that involves rolling a boulder around a map trying to destroy rival settlements. More on that, plus the status of Zeno Clash 2, later.

Mark Gerhard has told Eurogamer that Jagex has a third, fantasy MMO in addition to RuneScape and Stellar Dawn.
"We do, we totally do. We're working on it as we speak," he said in an interview published today.
"A lot of what we've done to push the boundary for Stellar Dawn will benefit RuneScape and another MMO we're working on. We've got the advantage in that we share the same MMO tech platform. From there it's really down to the studios to decide how its used."
Jagex launched flagship browser-based fantasy MMO RuneScape in 2001. Today, and after many overhauls, the game boasts over 140 million registered users and 10 million active accounts.
Could this new MMO be a sequel to RuneScape? It's unlikely; Mark Gerhard told us RuneScape had another "10 years" of "slated game updates and content updates".
To date, Jagex hasn't launched a second MMO to sit alongside RuneScape. Once upon a time this was to be MechScape, but the science-fiction project imploded and from the ashes rose Stellar Dawn. There's no release date for the latter.

Eve Online developer CCP has told CVG that fixing the lag on mass fleet battles in the game is its 'No.1 priority'.
We reported this morning that fans of the MMO were claiming latency had made the game unplayable following a patch update.
However, a CCP spokesperson told CVG this afternoon:
'CCP has invested significant time and resources throughout EVE's history on increasing the performance of fleet fights. We've always had a team of developers devoted to improving our technology and in recent years we made exponential headway through massive server upgrades and initiatives like "Stackless IO".
'Currently, unsurprisingly, this effort is our No.1 development priority and we have given the specialised team carte blanche in re-attaining 1,000+ player fleet battles that EVE is famous for.
'With the help of the EVE community on the test server, we believe we are close to some investigative breakthroughs and will continue to relay any progress via our developer blogs.'

A unique fashion show which Frogster is staging as part of the general GamesCom program of events on the main stage in Hall 8 will bridge the gap between the virtual world of Runes of Magic and reality. As part of a catwalk presentation featuring runway models the publisher will exhibit a one-off fashion collection for the first time worldwide on Friday 20th August from 16:00 until 17:30 and Saturday, 21st August from 15:00 until 16:00. Based on the motto ‘Gaming goes fashion’, the Berlin-based design studio, “Textilzelle”, will present interpretations of seven different character classes from the virtual world of Runes of Magic that they have transformed into an extraordinary fashion collection. Frogster has also integrated the fashionable outfits in digital form to the game world and will present them in their virtual surroundings. The event will be presented by Florian Kamolz, former presenter of the German gaming TV channel ‘GIGA’ along with Gina-Lisa Lohfink, a well-known model who was recently featured on the front cover of German Playboy.
The fashion show will also feature a large costume competition, an interactive element which will put the creativity of the RoM community to the test. Runes of Magic’s biggest fans will get the unique opportunity to strut their stuff on the catwalk in self-designed costumes honoring the virtual world of RoM. An expert panel of judges including Gina-Lisa, Frogster’s board member Dirk Weyel and fashion designers from the Berlin-based Textilzelle will award winners with valuable RoM-themed Casemod-PCs. Gina-Lisa will be available for photos, autographs and interviews on Friday and Saturday before and after the fashion show at Frogster’s stand C020/B021 in Hall 9.1. To round off the fashion show, the a cappella metal band Van Canto will make a live appearance on stage. The band’s inimitable style involves substituting a range of instruments with their voices and using only a drum kit for accompaniment. At Gamescom they will present their new in-game video for the RoM song ‘Magic Taborea’ for the first time ever alongside other songs from their existing repertoire.
Frogster will be presenting Runes of Magic at exhibition stands C020/B021 and C021 in Hall 9.1 along with their two new top titles, TERA and Mythos. MMO fans will be able to try out a preview version of the latest content from Runes of Magic as well as the first playable versions of TERA and Mythos on 40 computer terminals. The former GIGA presenters, Florian Kamolz and Philipp Senkbeil, will also hold regular stage presentations to showcase all the latest from the world of Runes of Magic. The leading RoM guild Delirium will demonstrate how players can adeptly bring down the Demon Lord Sirloth through live raids. Alongside many other features of the program the top guilds Delirium and Pravum will provide a fun challenge involving speed-runs. From humble beginnings, the original WormsTM titles took PC gaming to new levels of popularity and mass appeal. Selling in excess of 25 million copies over its 15 year lifespan, WormsTM has taken its wholly unique brand of addictive gameplay, hilarious humour and wild weaponry across almost every console possible, and on Thursday 26th August 2010 it will be returning to the format that made it most successful; the personal computer.
“Worms Reloaded has been a labour of love for the team given the legacy of 2D PC WormsTM titles such as Worms 2, Worms Armageddon etc. It has been almost 10 years since the last 2D game was released on personal computers”, said Martyn Brown, iconic figure in the world of WormsTM and Business Development Director at Team17. “In bringing Worms Reloaded to PC, we’ve reintroduced so much of what gamers loved about the good old days, and it’s fitting that it is also the first Worms game we’ve self-published since the early games. We are very much looking forward to supporting the game through the community on Steam as well as our own Facebook page.”
Indeed, while the most celebrated features of the series are present and correct, WormsTM Reloaded also sports a large amount of new additions to almost every facet of the gameplay experience. Over 60 single-player missions (including new Warzone Campaign and Bodycount Mode), a fully featured landscape creator, 45+ plus weapons spanning the entire WormsTM series and a huge currency based customization system - all wrapped up in HD quality visuals - means that WormsTM Reloaded will be a highly enjoyable experience, whether playing alone or with friends.
WormsTM fans will be able to pre-order WormsTM Reloaded from Thursday 29th July 2010, with bonuses including a 10% discount, 24 hours early access to the game and exclusive in-game items to enhance your chosen team. To pre-order WormsTM Reloaded, go to http://store.steampowered.com/app/22600.
