Several readers have sent word that today NASA launched Moonbase Alpha, an online game with single- and multi-player capability that "allows participants to step into the role of an exploration team member in a futuristic 3-D lunar settlement." The game is available now through Steam for free. Moonbase Alpha was built as a precursor to an upcoming NASA MMO called Astronaut: Moon, Mars & Beyond, and they hope it will be "a proof of concept to show how NASA content can be combined with a cutting-edge game engine to inspire, engage and educate students about agency technologies, job opportunities and the future of space exploration."

Recently, Blizzard Entertainment implemented a Real ID feature for some of its current games and all of its future Battle.net-based games. Today, Blizzard announced that it intends to require usage of the real names of Battle.net posters for its StarCraft II forums before release, and for its World of Warcraft forums shortly before the release of World of Warcraft: Cataclysm. From the announcement: 'The first and most significant change is that in the near future, anyone posting or replying to a post on official Blizzard forums will be doing so using their Real ID — that is, their real-life first and last name — with the option to also display the name of their primary in-game character alongside it. These changes will go into effect on all StarCraft II forums with the launch of the new community site prior to the July 27 release of the game, with the World of Warcraft site and forums following suit near the launch of Cataclysm. Certain classic forums, including the classic Battle.net forums, will remain unchanged

BioWare has said it's aware players hate hitting level caps, and has plans in place for Star Wars: The Old Republic's end game.
Speaking to Inc Gamers, BioWare's James Ohlen said: "I know some people are worried, for example, about the elder game [and are asking] 'what happens in the elder game, what happens when you get to the highest level?' We do have a plan for that and we will be revealing it the future."
He went on: "We have a lot of hardcore MMO players who have like five level-80 World of Warcraft characters, so it's not like we don't have the knowledge of what we need to do in terms of the elder game and other aspects of our game."
Ohlen refused to talk about these 'plans', but we suspect possible level-cap increases for maxed-out players, or maybe access to a load of top-level-only quests.
PC gamers will be tucking into SWTOR next year. Console gamers on the other hand may never get a look in.

21 independent British computer stores have appeared on a list of resellers compiled by Microsoft following a probe into counterfeit goods.
The list appears to relate to resellers that loaded pirate Microsoft products onto the hard drives of computer systems sold on to unsuspecting buyers.
Michala Wardell, head of anti-piracy at Microsoft UK, said that many of the buyers were unaware that the product being sold was not genuine. Wardell said that the piracy hotspots further suggested that the counterfeit trade was meeting demand from student populations however half of the list is based in middle England with six of the resellers from Birmingham and five from Liverpool.
The use of so-called "whistleblowers", presumably via the the Microsoft notification system informing the unsuspecting customers that their software is not genuine, also unveiled a small number of eBay traders selling software illegally.
Microsoft says most traders agreed to settle, presumably the terms of which were more attractive than an ongoing legal battle with the software giant, even if it meant agreeing to appear in the hall of shame. With Microsoft's goal clearly one of deterrent in the main, publishing the list will certainly serve as a warning to other would-be resellers of counterfeit software.

Still eager to prove that it's actually making Fallout Online, Interplay has started sending out teaser newsletters to people who sign up at the MMO's website - and has announced the fact in a press release.
The first newsletter, reported on and reproduced by Destructoid, takes the form of a spot of landscape concept art and a fragment of story. In the text, an adventurer reports the ravings of a madman about a "Monkey Butt Mine" in a letter to a friend.
It's all very nice and very Fallout, but it doesn't really add up to anything like a game yet. Interplay started taking names for beta testing a couple of weeks ago.
Development of Fallout Online has been overshadowed by a legal dispute between Interplay and Fallout rights owner Bethesda. Until recently, Interplay would only refer to the game as Project V13.
Although the legal battle is currently in hiatus, with Bethesda having dropped its most recent appeal, Bethesda says it's not over yet.

If Activision Blizzard CEO, Bobby Kotick, has his way, a future generation of television-compatible PCs could, perhaps, provide a viable alternative to a videogame consoles, according to a report by the Financial Times.
In comments related to discussing the subscription revenue enjoyed by Microsoft for Xbox Live, and Activision’s desire to run their own suscription-based service for franchises like Call of Duty, Kotick revealed that he believes the gateway to this goal could be expanding the scope of PCs with regard to gaming, given the open nature of the platform.
“We’ve heard that 60 per cent of Microsoft’s subscribers are principally on Live because of Call of Duty,” Kotick commented. “We don’t really participate financially in that income stream. We would really like to be able to provide much more value to those millions of players playing on Live, but it’s not our network.”
The Blizzard-developed World of WarCraft is presently a major source of subscription-based revenue for the company, so it’s easy to understand why Kotick, an outspoken proponent of subscription-based payment models, is keen to replicate this success with his company’s other franchises. One step toward this goal, he says, will be to “very aggressively” support efforts by Dell and HP to connect PCs to televisions, with the help of “gamer friendly” PCs built for this purpose.
“We have always been platform agnostic,” he continued. “Consoles do a very good job of supporting the gamer. If we are going to broaden our audiences, we are going to need to have other devices.”

Dave Jones has told Eurogamer that Realtime Worlds will need to find a publishing partner in order to do a console version of APB.
"That won't happen until we have a console publishing partner. That's the only thing that will trigger that," Jones explained in a wide-ranging interview published this morning.
Despite EA Partners assisting with retail distribution of the PC version, Jones said that he hadn't had any conversations with EA about a console release.
"I don't think it's something we'd say we'd shop around. We're going to stay heavily focused on building upon what we've got. We'll have conversations with people. If there's interest there, then of course we'd love to bring it to console.
"But I think, quite rightly, the console people are sitting there watching how the game does, how we build upon it, how good the service is, what would be the cost involved in running dedicated servers for console, for example, I don't think anybody's ever done that yet. There are still a lot of things they have to think about."
Jones also denied that the difficulties in getting a massively-multiplayer game off the ground on Microsoft's subscription-based Xbox Live service was holding up console plans.
"It's not putting us off," he said. "But if there's a publishing partner out there who says we'd love to do a game with dedicated servers and have a hundred players and actually have some life in the online world, then that I think... It's difficult for them to make that decision when they don't have full control over it. At least on PC we had full control. It's our servers in our data centre and there weren't any issues."

A combination of factors like console penetration, piracy, and the huge inherent variability in PC hardware setups have made the PC a third-class citizen for many gaming genres, especially the kind of high-adrenaline action games that were once the PC's bread and butter. Epic is a company that has been vocal in its shift toward consoles, with many controversial statements dropped over the years in reference to piracy being the reason. So it was with some surprise that we noted Epic's VP, Mark Rein, pointing out recently that the PC is as important as ever. Why the turnaround? This article suggests that the extended length of the current console generation will drive some developers back to the PC as new games push up against hardware limits

While StarCraft 2 may benefit from a "robust new 3D graphics-rendering engine," we didn't know until recently that the game would be receiving a post-launch patch enabling that other kind of 3D (read: the "needs glasses" kind). In an interview with IGN at a South Korean media event -- where, no joke, a StarCraft 2 logo-emblazoned Korean Air plane was unveiled -- production director Chris Sagaty explained, "We will be releasing 3D in the first few months, for those Nvidia cards and screens that support it."
For what it's worth, an Nvidia rep also told IGN that it's "optimising for all systems," so that the 3D support would work on as many systems as possible. We might try to get it working ourselves, if it wasn't for our sheer terror at the thought of a Zergling flood coming through the screen.

During this year's E3, some lucky folks in the press got an eyes-on with Star Wars: The Old Republic's multiplayer mode. Thankfully the benevolent jedi lords at BioWare have deemed the gameplay worthy of regular folks and have released an exciting video of the multiplayer in action. Imperial troopers and breach droids abound, so we implore you to have plenty of midi-chlorians at the ready before venturing into the clip we've dropped after the break. Oh, also, it looks totally boss.

Several hours ago, someone found an HTML injection vulnerability in YouTube's comment system, and since then sites such as 4chan have had a field day with popular videos. The bug is triggered by placing a <script> tag at the beginning of a post. The tag itself is escaped, but everything following it is cheerfully placed in the page as is. Blacked out pages with giant red text scrolling across them, shock site redirects, and all sorts of other fun things have been spotted. YouTube has currently blocked such comments from being posted and set the comments section to be hidden by default, and appears to be in the process of removing some of these comments, but the underlying bug does not seem to have been fixed yet.

We're just as easily drawn into the shame spiral that is buying games we don't have any time to play as the next guy -- especially when a tremendous sale is involved -- so when we offer up news that every game available through OnLive is currently 30 percent off, we have to be a little wary.
Sure, it's great for those among us with "self restraint" (or whatever) who'll simply purchase one or two titles and not go totally bananas, but what of us folks with ... control issues? Well, yeah, we suppose there's always the rental options being equivalently discounted. Thankfully, the sale only lasts through Monday (at 11:59PM ET), otherwise we might end up with another two or three copies of AaaaaAAaaaAAAaaAAAAaAAAAA!!! -- A Reckless Disregard for Gravity ... which is only $7, by the way. Dammit!

Over on the IE blog they have a rundown of IE9's hardware accelerated support for the canvas element. They write, 'With the recent release of the latest IE9 platform preview, we talked about how we're rebuilding the browser to use the power of your whole PC to browse the web, and to unlock a new class of HTML5 applications. One area that developers are especially excited about is the potential of HTML5 canvas. Like all of the graphics in IE9, canvas is hardware accelerated through Windows and the GPU. In this blog post we discuss some of the details behind canvas and the kinds of things developers can build.

As of today, EA has been making FIFA Manager games for 10 years. And in celebration the publisher has announced FIFA Manager 11.
This new instalment brings improvements to tactics, transfers and online play. The action-card system of FIFA Manager 10 has been "considerably expanded".
On top of that, cup draws have been added, derby matches elevated, player levels revised, experience rethought, player searches refined and a separate World Cup tournament implemented.
Plus, there's the eternal promise of depth for old-timers and accessibility for newcomers.
FIFA Manager 11 is in development at Bright Future in Cologne. The game will be released during the sultry tones of autumn.

Longtime Microsoft watcher Mary Jo Foley used her Redmond magazine column this month to point out that after years of arguing that the browser is "inextricably linked" to the operating system, the company's current push to get users to drop IE 6 for newer versions, plus IE's separate release schedule, are disproving its own argument. From the article: 'Microsoft has insisted that its browser is part of Windows, and, ironically, that's coming back to haunt the company. Customers can mix and match different versions of IE with different versions of Windows.....But Microsoft has done very little to get this message out there. I'd argue this is because it makes plain the absurdity of the company's claims that IE is part of Windows.'

Blizzard is musing over a free-to-play business model for massively multiplayer online game World of Warcraft.
Speaking to PC Gamer, World of Warcraft lead designer Tom Chilton, admitted that, "at some point, it may not make sense for us to have a subscription fee."
However, he quickly clarified that: "We’re not spending a lot of time thinking about it. It’s not something that’s a reality for us in the near future."
Major Western titles such as The Lord of the Rings Online and Dungeons and Dragons Online have moved to an Asian style free-to-play model in recent months, although Chilton speculated that this was not an attempt to compete with World of Warcraft directly.
"I feel like they’re doing that to compete with other games that are on a similar subscriber level to what they were at. I imagine that when one of them went free to play it cannibalised some of the other subscribers," he speculated.
"I can definitely imagine that being the case with World of Warcraft. If another game comes along and blows us away it may not make sense for us to have a subscription fee. Or even further down the line, when we have another MMO out," he added.
World of Warcraft uses a Western style subscription model in South Korea, where it is sold purely as a digital download, but subscribers will also be given free access to the forthcoming StarCraft II. Given the popularity of StarCraft in the country this is more to drive sales of Warcraft than inevitable hit StarCraft II.
