A Google engineer Thursday published attack code that exploits a zero-day vulnerability in Windows XP, giving hackers a new way to hijack and infect systems with malware. But other security experts objected to the way the Google engineer disclosed the bug — just five days after it was reported to Microsoft — and said the move is more evidence of the ongoing, and increasingly public, war between the two giants

A security flaw has been discovered in Windows XP which could allow cyber criminals to take control of users’ PCs.
According to Thinq.co.uk, the vulnerability was discovered by researcher Tavis Ormandy, an affects the Help and Support Center for Windows XP and Server 2003.
Ormandy wrote on a website yesterday that attackers could use the remote assistance tool to execute tasks on their victims’ computers.
"Upon successful exploitation, a remote attacker is able to execute arbitrary commands with the privileges of the current user," Ormandy wrote.
"I've concluded that there's a significant possibility that attackers have studied this component, and releasing this information rapidly is in the best interest of security."
Ormandy has reported the security flaw to Microsoft, which has said it is investigating.
Earlier this year, Microsoft fixed a 17-year-old vulnerability in Windows which had appeared in almost every version of Windows since NT 3.1.

Choose from a variety of scenario campaigns to play alone or with friends, each adding more colour and depth to the Sword of the Stars universe.
description
The Sword of the Stars story...
Episode I: Sword of the Stars
It is the year 2405, and human scientists have discovered a new technology, the Node Drive. This is an innovation that will finally allow travel from star to star at speeds faster than light. As mankind is poised on the brink of a new era, tragedy strikes, as the first inter-colony ship is destroyed and Earth is ravaged by an alien force. What was supposed to be the dawning of a new era instead was stymied by a grim, new reality... We are not alone...and we are no longer safe.
Episode II: Born of Blood
The year is 2445. Over 30 years have passed since the first stellar empires began to expand. Four races once set out to explore and conquer the galaxy, meeting in fiery clashes that spanned the universe. The first wars have passed and a promising age of diplomacy dawns.
Now a new alien race emerges shattering the uneasy peace. With new drive systems, ships, technology, and tactics, the Zuul burst onto the scene with a devastating agenda – not only will they conquer, they will control the entire universe… unless you put a stop to their destruction.
With savage ships and psychic powers, they enslave or annihilate all those who oppose them. As their galley disks descend to harvest slaves from neighboring races, all other empires may be forced to put aside their grudges – if they do not unite against the Zuul, each race will be systematically exterminated. Form alliances and learn to work with your foes as you lead your fleets to victory in a universe at war in Sword of Stars: Born of Blood.
Episode III: A Murder of Crows
While the four civilized races battle back the voracious Zuul and seek advantage over each other, a ghost from the past returns to the galaxy in the form of the manipulative Morrigi. Already known for their dark crow-shaped attack drones and deadly traps, this race once thought long extinct, returns looking for vengeance.
Using never-before-seen weapons, ships and tactics, the Morrigi fall upon the other five races of the Sword of the Stars universe, who must now adapt to the ancient masters of space or be destroyed.
Time is of the essence as world after world falls to the black winged ships that surge out of the dark like A Murder of Crows.

Well, it looks like Adobe isn't wasting much time in fixing that "critical" Flash vulnerability that could allow remote hijacking of a user's computer, but it's a slightly different story when it comes to patching Adobe Acrobat and Reader. According to Adobe, the Flash fix will be rolled out by tomorrow at the latest, but it says the fix for Reader and Acrobat won't be available until June 29th. Somewhat curiously, Adobe says it had considered rushing out a "one-off 0-day" fix for Reader and Acrobat as soon as possible, but says that would have caused too much "churn and patch management overhead on our users" considering there's already a regular quarterly update scheduled for July 13th. So, instead, Adobe has decided to push that update up to June 29th and simply include the fix for the vulnerability with it. In the meantime? Stay frosty, we guess.

Google updated Chrome Frame, a plugin that embeds the company's Chrome browser engine into rival Microsoft's Internet Explorer, to a beta version. As it did last year, Google cast Chrome Frame today as a way for IE users to instantly boost the notoriously slow JavaScript speed of their browser and let them access sites and web applications that rely on standards that IE doesn't support, primarily HTML5.

Before you start getting excited for something along the lines of Vista's famed SP1, you should know that the Windows 7 Service Pack 1 that Microsoft plans to release shortly is merely a combination of existing updates, outside of the new Remote Desktop to support new Windows Server 2008 SP1 features. Still, that's not exactly a bad thing: Windows 7 doesn't require same sort of service pack "rescue" Vista did, and Microsoft's hope is that a feature-stable, combined update could promote some enterprise holdouts to finally take the plunge. The public beta of SP1 will be released at the end of July, with the final version to presumably be released soon after.

Newly released:
features
ARCADE MODE: SBK X assures fun for all, allowing experienced and inexperienced players alike to race for the title both online and offline.
SIMULATION MODE: SBK X has not overlooked its two wheeler enthusiasts, and has further elaborated the game’s realism. Are you ready to prove yourself?
FULLY LICENSED: discover the excitement of the championship in three differente categories (Superstock, WSS, SBK) and challenge more than 90 real drivers on their bikes on the official circuits.
CAREER MODE: start an incredible adventure on two wheels from scratch and build your career by climbing all the categories of the Superbike championship… Be your own manager, choosing your offers and obtaining promotions (but also dismissals!) according to your results.
STORY MODE: A totally new feature of arcade mode, story mode lets you live the ride to the championship of SBK through a series of challenges that will determine your destiny among the champions of the Superbike.
COSTUMIZATION: create your driver and customize him every detail, then prove his abilities in all game modes…
EVOLVING TRACK: SBK X is based on a system that modifies the condition of the track based on grind from the bikes; this means that, on a dry track, the asphalt builds up skid marks in breaking points and acceleration, while in the case of a wet track, it dries along the ideal trajectory. So the track isn’t just a marginal element but has become a fundamental aspect of the driving experience.
MULTIPLAYER UP TO 16 PLAYERS: the online mode has broadened its horizons, offering you the possibility to race against 15 opponents and opening the doors to both main game modes (arcade and simulation)
description

Whether you’re keen on 100% realistic races or you simply want to gas your bike, SBK®X is the ideal game for you.

Due to Facebook's recent decision to limit the notifications proliferated by third-party applications -- Join my Mafia! Feed my Goldfish! Become a Vampire! Fight my Pirates, etc. -- the creators of games which appear on the social networking site are beginning to see their player bases decrease dramatically. Gamasutra reports that 12 of the top 25 Facebook games saw more than one million players leave in May, while the worldwide FarmVille community lost more than 7.7 million of its agricultural inhabitants.
It's unclear how these losses affect the pocketbooks of social game developers such as Zynga -- its entirely possible that these quitters weren't purchasing in-game content in the first place. However, it's definitely creating some negative consequences for our untended, expansive soybean fields.

Square Enix has warned the Final Fantasy XI community of a possible "breach" of server security that may put accounts at risk.
"Dear valued Final Fantasy XI player," the email sent out to players begins, "Square Enix is committed to protecting your user information."
But: "We have just been alerted to a potential breach of Square Enix’s secure systems from an external source. This may have resulted in the disclosure of a limited number of PlayOnline IDs, passwords and user account data.
"Please be assured that your credit card data has not been compromised," the email continues. "We are taking this matter very seriously and are conducting a full investigation."
Final Fantasy XI is an eight year-old MMO. Let's hope these kinds of problems are ironed out in Final Fantasy XIV, which is due to launch on PC later this year - and on PS3 presumably at a later date.

For now, EA is banging the FIFA World Cup drum and challenging you to win the famous trophy with your country. Can you?

When Adobe said Flash gives you the full web experience, it meant it. Part and parcel of the web, as we all know, is the good old hacking community, which has been "actively exploiting" a vulnerability in Flash Player 10.0.45.2 (and earlier versions) and Adobe Acrobat and Reader 9.x to overtake people's machines and do hacky stuff with them. This so-called flaw also causes crashes, but that's probably not what's worrying you right now. Adobe says the 10.1 Release Candidate for Flash Player looks to be unaffected, while versions 8.x of Acrobat and Reader are confirmed safe. To remedy the trouble, the company advises moving to the RC for Flash, and deleting authplay.dll to keep your Acrobat from performing undesirable gymnastics. Oh boy, Steve's gonna have a field day with this one.

Those who thought the brouhaha over Google's scanning of Wi-Fi networks by its Street View cars was over (whether you believe it was deliberate or not) are destined to be disappointed. News comes from Australia over the weekend that the Australian government has referred the matter to the Australian Federal Police for investigation. The country's Attorney General, Robert McClelland, was quoted saying, 'Obviously I won't pre-empt the outcome of that investigation but they relate in substantial part to possible breaches of the Telecommunications Interception Act, which prevents people accessing electronic information other than for authorized purposes.'
