The man in charge of Internet Explorer has told PC Pro that he's been tasked with destroying IE6. Internet Explorer 6 continues to be the most used browser version in the world at the ripe old age of nine. IE6's position as the default browser in Windows XP means many companies still cling to the browser. 'Part of my job is to get IE6 share down to zero as soon as possible,' said Ryan Gavin, head of the Internet Explorer business group. Microsoft has also been giving further previews of Internet Explorer 9, with demonstrations showing two 720p HD videos running simultaneously on a netbook, thanks to IE9's GPU-accelerated graphics.

For years, AMD has catered to gamers and enthusiasts with mid-range Black Edition processors whose unlocked multipliers make overclocking easy. Intel has traditionally reserved unlocked multipliers for its ultra-expensive Extreme CPUs, but it has now brought the feature to affordable models that compete directly with AMD's most popular processors. The Core i5-655K and Core i7-875K have two and four cores, respectively, and they're priced at just $216 and $342. It appears that both will easily hit speeds in excess of 4GHz with air cooling. Surprisingly, even at stock speeds, the i7-875K offers better performance and power efficiency per dollar than just about any other desktop CPU out there

Ubisoft is the latest company to attach DRM to its PC games in an effort to curb piracy -- an initiative that has had basically the opposite of its intended effect in keeping out people who bought the games. Blizzard's Frank Pearce told VideoGamer that it's not the strategy Blizzard intends to implement in StarCraft II, with the company opting instead for a compelling Battle.net that will make people want to stay online in single-player, rather than requiring it. It's still a form of DRM, requiring online authentication, but it's also meant to serve other, gameplay-enhancing purposes.
"If we've done our job right and implemented Battle.net in a great way," the StarCraft II producer said, "people will want to be connected while they're playing the single player campaign so they can stay connected to their friends on Battle.net and earn the achievements on Battle.net."
Pearce called DRM "a losing battle for us," noting that the group of people who want to crack DRM is always "larger than our development teams." Pearce said "We need our development teams focused on content and cool features, not anti-piracy technology" -- something with which those of us patiently waiting for StarCraft II will agree.

EA has announced a July 20 date for the official launch of Need For Speed World, its racing MMO developed by EA Black Box. The game has been in closed beta for quite some time, with Joystiq getting a look at it back in March.
NFSW will be released as a free game client which will let players advance their driver up to level 10 before being asked to purchase a "starter pack." The game can continue to be played without it, but players won't be able to level up to earn new vehicles and power-ups.
EA is accepting pre-orders for a $19.99 starter pack, which allows for progression up to level 50 and includes an exclusive car, beta access, the ability to play NFSW a week before release and a selection of power-ups. Unfortunately, our suggestion for a "back-seat driver" power-up -- which would play the game for you to grind levels -- doesn't appear to have made the cut.

Blizzard still has "a lot of work to do" in order to come to terms with its enormous growth since World of Warcraft launched.
"It's a constant struggle every day to make sure we're doing the right things with the organisation," senior vice president and co-founder Frank Pearce told Eurogamer this week.
"I don't think our on-boarding process is very smooth at all, especially considering our size and what we're trying to achieve. We have lots of room for improvement.
"From the outside looking in, if you look at the end result in our products, we're doing OK, but it's a constant risk when you've experienced that much explosive growth in the last five years. It's a lot of work."
Pearce said that "a documented mission statement and core values" were helpful in keeping growing pains in check.
Blizzard was already a big company, of course, but the scale of its growth has been challenging for Pearce and colleagues to handle.
"Even when we had 500 people, it's very difficult to know who everyone was, and now we've got 4600 people, you just can't know who everyone is," he said. "There are many more people that you don't know than you do.
"On the development teams, they're very much like family. They know everyone on their team and they work together day in and day out.
"They have very distinct cultures, because there's the WOW team, and there's the StarCraft II team and the Diablo team. But we don't have that sense of small team and family as an organisation any more.
"And it's OK, right? We made great games to get into the hands of our fans, and this is a side effect of that."
Check out our in-depth hands-on preview of StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty for more on Blizzard's latest, which is due out on 27th July.

A Symantec blog post reports that the company recently stumbled upon a server hosting the stolen credentials for 44 million game accounts. It goes on to explain how the owners of the server made use of a botnet to process that mountain of data:
"Now it's time to turn those gaming credentials into hard cash. But how do you find out which credentials are valid and thus worth some money? Three options come to mind: 1) Log on to gaming websites 44 million times! 2) Write a program to log in to the websites and check for you (this would take months). 3) Write a program that checks the login details and then distribute the program to multiple computers. Option one naturally seems next to impossible. Option two is also not very feasible, since websites typically block IP addresses after multiple failed login attempts. By taking advantage of the distributed processing that the third option offers, you can complete the task more quickly and help mitigate the multiple-login failure problems by spreading the task over more IP addresses. This is what Trojan.Loginck's creators have done."

Mafia Wars and Farmville creator Zynga has inked a deal with Yahoo! to integrate games across its global network, including its homepage, games, mail and messenger services.
Yahoo! claims the deal will allow Zynga to reach over 600 million users, as the social games business continues to expand its network across the web.
"Yahoo! is focused on providing compelling, personally relevant experiences and social games are core to this experience,” said Hilary Schneider, executive vice president, Yahoo Americas.
"Zynga will bring top notch social game experiences to Yahoo!, including through our open platforms such as Yahoo! Application Platform and Yahoo! Updates. Yahoo! will also continue to work with other partners, developers and publishers to bring compelling innovations and experiences from across the web to our users."
Zynga recently signed a new five-year deal with Facebook, and also provides games to MSN and MySpace, as well as releasing games for the iPhone.
"With over 35 million unique users playing our games every single day, social games are fast becoming a leading source of entertainment worldwide surpassing most television shows," added Mark Pincus, CEO of Zynga. "Our partnership with Yahoo! gives millions of new users the ability to connect with friends and families through games."

While World of Warcraft has demonstrated the power of micro-transactions - even in subscription-based titles - Blizzard currently has no plans to implement similar ideas into its forthcoming RTS title StarCraft II.
That's according to the developer's executive VP, Frank Pearce, who has told GamesIndustry.biz that he didn't currently consider such a move worthwhile.
"Not right now - no plans," he said when asked if - following the success of WoW's Celestial Steed - the RTS game might follow suit.
"But if you look at the micro-transactions for World of Warcraft as an example, as much as possible, we're not trying to do anything that impacts the gameplay experience, or affects the integrity of the game world at all.
"I think micro-transactions probably don't make sense for a game like StarCraft II. Unless we decide to do something much more extensive with player profiles, then maybe we'll evaluate it.
"But for me personally what I think is most exciting and what I want to see implemented and executed on well, is the StarCraft II marketplace - we talked about it at Blizzcon, where the community makes its own maps, and has the mechanism to distribute those maps to the rest of the community. Historically, with a game like Warcraft III there's no easy way to get your map into the hands of the community," he added.
Meanwhile he confirmed that the game had now received a 12-plus rating in Korea after the company submitted a revised build in a bid to overturn the original 18-plus ruling.
"Well the biggest factor is that if you have an 18-plus rating, it's really hard to get the game into game rooms for people to play - and that's where a lot of people play games," he explained. "So we want to make sure that we can get the game into as many people's hands as possible.
However, he wasn't able to shed any light on what the Korean authorities took exception to specifically: "You know what?" he replied. "We submitted a build with changes, and they didn't really tell us what the big difference-maker was. We're just happy to get the rating."

InfoWorld's Galen Gruman questions the viability of Windows 7 on tablets in the wake of the news that HP will use Palm's WebOS as the foundation for iPad rivals, rather than follow through with the previously hyped Windows 7-based Slate. 'The iPad proved a tablet shouldn't be a portable computer that happened to have its screen always exposed. Even though technical components are shared between the Mac OS and the iPhone OS, the irrelevant Mac OS functions aren't gumming up the iPhone OS, and Apple's development environment doesn't let you pull through desktop approaches into your mobile applications. You're forced to go touch-native,' Gruman writes, adding that, when it comes to touch capabilities, Windows 7 leaves much to be desired. 'Sure, a few Windows 7 slate-style tablets will ship — Asus and MSI are said to have models shipping later this year. But those products will go nowhere, because Windows 7 is simply not the right operating system for a slate.

Recently-released shooter title Aliens vs Predator is set to become part of the title line-up for cloud computing service OnLive, it has emerged.
The news, revealed by Rebellion boss Jason Kingsley, could mean that its publishing partner for the title, SEGA, is set to sign up to OnLive alongside EA, Ubisoft, Take-Two and others.
Kingsley, speaking at last night's IBIS/LBS Videogames Investment Network event in London, was responding to a question regarding the possibility of games content being supplied by a cable television set-top box.
"I think there are quite a lot of walled gardens that have grown up in the industry, and people like Sony and Microsoft are very used to controlling a certain sector of the market - and have been very successful in doing that," he said.
"I definitely think there's an opportunity there, and different people are trying different things around concepts like cloud computing. We're working on something with OnLive at the moment, which enables you to play one of our games, Aliens vs Predator - but you don't actually have to own a copy of the game, you can play it remotely.
"Now there are some very interesting issues there - I don't know how that's going to scale, for example, and we're looking at the technology right now. But everybody's got a TV in their living room... so you've got a massive market there potentially.
"It's very exciting - and what I think is really exciting is that it's all about content. These guys have got some very interesting business models," he added.
He went on to describe that his priority as a games developer was to get games out to consumers, and that he wasn't concerned with the method of distribution.
SEGA failed to respond to any request for comment on the issue, so for now suggestion of a formal partnership between it and OnLive is unconfirmed.

Emergent has revealed a licensing deal it signed with the studio building the upcoming online game LEGO Universe. The Gamebryo engine vendor signed an agreement with Colorado-based studio NetDevil, allowing the studio to use Emergent’s LightSpeed engine to build the LEGO MMO.
“The best part about Emergent’s tech was that we were able to get the artists producing actual content within the first month of the project,” said NetDevil technical director Erik Urdang.
He added, “We evaluated other engines and chose Gamebryo for its render pipe and memory management features, in addition to the significant engineering support which allowed us to optimize the technology.”

Blizzard believes World of Warcraft will see a significant rise in subscriptions this year, dismissing claims that the MMO has reached its peak.
The company announced back in 2008 that World of Warcraft had hit 11.5 million subscriptions, but the game hasn’t seemed to pass any new milestones since then.
A Blizzard exec claims this is all set to change when the newest expansion, Cataclysm, is launched later this year, according to VG247.
“Whenever we launch an expansion we usually see some win-back from players who have set WoW aside temporarily,” said Blizzard’s EVP of product development Frank Pearce.
“Hopefully we will get some people back from Cataclysm as well. I don’t think 11.5 million is a peak, necessarily, but there are certain things that we need to do and need to do well in order to see it go further.”

A cryptic hourglass on the Total War website and a countdown that stops at 1908 (for today at least) has got our cogs whirring.
Our money's on Shogun: Total War 2 which was rumoured to be getting a reveal at E3 next month.
The rumour is backed by a Creative Assembly tweet last week, which said, "Just to confirm, we are still working on Total War and aren't planning to get sporty."
What does the hourglass hint towards? Wait for it...Only time will tell.

May 24th, 2010, 23:30 Posted By: wraggster
Star Trek Online executive producer Craig Zinkievich has laid out update plans for the immediate future of the space MMO, and they include minigames, diplomacy gameplay, a raised level cap, ship interiors, weekly content, a new faction and user-generated content.
Star Trek Online fans already know to expect the Accolade stat-tracking system, and the Squad system that will let players of different level team up, in future updates. Also coming are some balance adjustments and general improvements.
However, Zinkievich went on to mention the headline features of the Season 2 update, due "before the end of July". This will raise the level cap 6 grades to Vice Admiral 1, introduce a Federation Diplomatic Corps to rank up in by taking part in non-combat and exploration missions, and add minigames to play on your ship and in space station bars.
Most of the new content in the season will be faction-agnostic, so both Klingon and Federation captains can play, and Cryptic aims to start rolling out new Episodes to play ever week. Ship interiors will also be extended beyond the bridge.
Looking beyond to Season 3, Zinkievich is more vague but says Cryptic is looking at adding a new playable faction - Romulans, Cardassians or Borg, perhaps - and is also examining the possibility of user-generated content. Cryptic will be holding a series of polls of players to see which ideas - also including fleet starbases and a persistent PvP game - are most popular.

Social games (such as FarmVille, etc.) are hardly new, because games have been part of recorded history for thousands of years. An infographic has integrated many of the key games from history (starting with Egypt's Senet game from 3100BC), showing major milestones along the way, such as play-by-mail, Dungeons and Dragons and Magic: the Gathering. Today's cultural phenomenon of social games, which might better be better called 'social network games,' is the confluence of several trends ranging from asynchronous gameplay, social play and virtual economies — all of which are shown within the infographic
