Square Enix used its VanaFest 2010 convention in Tokyo yesterday to announce the beginning of closed public testing for its next MMO, Final Fantasy XIV. It's not quite beta yet, however, rather the opening of alpha testing to players from the Final Fantasy XI fanbase.
The VanaFest website reported: "With the eagerly anticipated Final Fantasy XIV drawing ever nearer its beta test phase, we are excited to announce that we will be conducting a closed alpha test - exclusive to our loyal Final Fantasy XI users!"
Those who've been selected for the test will get further information starting today, with the test itself scheduled to go live next week, on 11th March.
"Those who were not selected in this drawing, fear not, for there will be other opportunities to come," Square Enix added. "Be sure to stay tuned!"
There were a raft of announcement for the older MMO, too, as developers laid out their plans for Final Fantasy XI in 2010.
The headline was three new "battle-focused" mini-expansions, or add-ons, set in a new high level zone of Abyssea. These will go hand-in-hand with a gradual raising of the level cap from 75 to 99 over the course of the year.
The expansions are called Vision of Abyssea (due in June), Scars of Abyssea (September) and Heroes of Abyssea (December). They will be preceded by a major content update in March. Job revisions, new quests and missions and the conclusion of the Wings of the Goddess storyline are all on the roadmap for the year.

Ex-lead designer on Curse Of Monkey Island Bill Tiller has told CVG that his new game has been 'inspired' by the classic LucasArts title.
Tiller's Ghost Pirates of Vooju Island features three playable characters that recently turned into ghosts - and are now looking for chances to get back into their living bodies.
"The idea behind making Ghost Pirates was really to give me a chance to make my own Monkey Island-like game, but at the same time I didn't want to do a story about Guybrush," Tiller told CVG.
"I am huge fan of the MI series, especially of Monkey 1 and 2. And this is sort of my way of making a fan game, just like the ton of Monkey Island fans out there that made MI comics, games, plays, and MI fan art. I am just like them but I am lucky in that I got to actually work on one.
"But I always encouraged Monkey Fans not to copy Monkey Island exactly or make a Monkey Island fan game. I wanted them to make their own game inspired by Monkey Island, which is what I did here. Which is also what the writers and directors of Pirates of the Caribbean movie is- it one big MI fan movie- true, inspired heavily by the Disneyland ride, but an homage to MI none the less.
"So the humor in Ghost Pirates is similar but not the same, but it is most like the Curse of Monkey Island art because obviously I like that style. The biggest change is that I have more colors and pixels to work with and I didn't use any pencil out lines.
"So MI fans should expect to get the same feel from Curse of Monkey Island but different style of writing, game design and story. Plus I added a few twists based on the fact that the characters are ghosts and that you play three of them instead of just one."
Ghost Pirates hit UK shelves on Friday.

The StarCraft II beta is currently underway and already has us pining for the full release. As for exactly when that will happen, all we've known is that Blizzard plans to release the game in the first half of 2010. According to the latest BlizzCast, that's still the plan. During the podcast, production director Chris Sigaty stated that the beta should last "three to five months" and added that Blizzard is "still targeting the first half of this year."
With a three to five month beta window, that puts the end of the test somewhere between May and July. Of course, there's no telling how soon the game will release after the close of the beta, but hopefully it won't take too long. The universe won't save itself, after all.
Finally, for those out there lucky enough to be in the beta, you should know that the first patch is now available.

upto0013 notes the latest spot of trouble for Google in Europe: the EU says that Google's Street View images violate privacy laws. The EU's privacy watchdog asked Google to notify cities and towns before photographing (Google says it does this already) and to delete original photos after 6 months (Google keeps them for a year and says it has reason to do so).
"[The privacy official] said that the company should revise its 'disproportionate' policy of keeping the original unblurred images for up to a year, saying improvements in Google's blurring technology and better public awareness would lead to fewer complaints — and a shorter delay for people to react to the photos they see on the site. Complaints about the images put online would usually be checked against the original photos."

A post up at Gamasutra complains about the lack of effort put into the PC ports of some console games. The author picks on the unimpressively-reviewed Ninja Blade in particular: "Just as a quick guide to what we're dealing with here: when you create a new save file at the start of Ninja Blade on the PC, it warns you not to 'turn off your console.' Yes, Ninja Blade is one of those conversions: not so much converted as made to perfunctorily run on a different machine. In-game, you're asked to press A, B, X and Y in various sequences as part of Ninja Blade's extraordinary abundance of quick-time events. Whether you have an Xbox 360 pad plugged in or not, the game captions these button icons with text describing the PC equivalent controls. Only it doesn't always do that. Sometimes, you're left staring at a giant, pulsating, green letter A, and no idea what to do with it." What awful ports have you had the misfortune to experience?

GamePolitics has an article about a research paper issued by the AU government's Institute of Criminology titled "Crime Risks of Three-Dimensional Virtual Environments." The paper discusses the legal questions raised by game worlds and avatars, ranging from regulation of in-game currency to a report of virtual rape.
"A person controlling an avatar that is unexpectedly raped or assaulted might experience the physical reaction of 'freezing,' or the associated shock, distrust and loss of confidence in using [3D virtual environments]. While civil redress for psychological harm is conceivable, the 'disembodied' character of such an incident would invariably bar liability for any crime against the person. However, Australian federal criminal law imposes a maximum penalty of three years imprisonment for using an internet carriage service to 'menace, harass or cause offence' to another user. Further, US and Australian laws ban simulated or actual depictions of child abuse and pornography. Therefore, any representations of child avatars involved in virtual sexual activity, torture or physical abuse are prohibited, regardless of whether the real-world user is an adult or child."

Turbine's Dungeons & Dragons Online Eberron Unlimited has passed one million players since launch in September 2009, with revenues up 500 per cent since the game adopted a free-to-play model.
The game was subscription based until September last year, when an upgrade opened up a fee-to-play option - although subscribers have also doubled since the change, said the developer.
"The response from players to DDO Unlimited has been nothing short of phenomenal," offered Jim Crowley, president of Turbine.
"We’ve known all along how great this game is and by implementing an innovative new model that put the players in charge of how they pay and play DDO Unlimited, we’ve successfully expanded our reach and injected new energy into the game."
The sale of content through microtransactions in Turbine's digital store are three times the industry average, according to the developer.
"The launch of DDO Unlimited has been a huge success and has really taken the game to a new level," added Fernando Paiz, executive producer of DDO Unlimited.
"As we celebrate our 4th birthday, the game has never been better and we’re just getting started with more adventure packs, more store items, and other innovative features coming in the major updates we have planned throughout 2010."

Citing massive growth in their user base ("25 million users, 1000+ games, 12 billion player minutes per month, and 75 billion Steam client minutes per month"), Valve unveiled a revamped UI for Steam on Tuesday, opening the beta test to anyone who wants to try it out. There are many changes, and an increased focus on social features: "Right from within your own game Library, you can now track which of your friends plays each game or invite them to play one with you. Before you've even bought a game, knowing whether your friends play it is one of the most useful pieces of information to have. So on the store homepage, there's a new listing of what your friends have bought or played lately." Tracking games and achievements have both gotten simpler, and Valve has dropped the Internet Explorer rendering engine in favor of WebKit. An enterprising user also found files that may indicate the existence of an OS X Steam client.

Roar Wave 1.6.1 is a complete package of emulators for Windows multiconsola.
It comes with the best emulators for Playstation consoles, Sega, Nintendo and X-BOX. Can automatically open the appropriate emulator ROMs from the menu Wave Roar> Open ROM.
You can also change the background image with the button top right "..." (Change Fund) to take the program to our satisfaction.
Wave Roar is portable, few emulators need to save data in the registry (like ePSXe) and some need to be configured in the first use, the rest were configured to store the data inside the folder of the emulator (Fusion, VirtuaNES, etc.) that is useful when transporting our emulators and games without having to worry about where they were saved games and other data.

A PC demo for forthcoming RTS title Supreme Commander 2 is now available via Steam.
The demo offers two playable missions and going by the response so far, most players seem to be really enjoying it. If nothing else, it should be a pretty enjoyable way to kill an hour of your free time, especially as it's not too demanding on your PC.
Publisher Square Enix said recently that the PC version of the title will arrive on March 5th, whilst the 360 game will follow on March 19th.

"Over six months ago, Google announced it would start phasing out support for Internet Explorer 6 on Orkut and YouTube, and started pushing its users to modern browsers. The search giant has now given a specific kill date for old browser support on the video website: 'Support stops on March 13th. Stopped support essentially means that some future features on YouTube will be rolled out that won't work in older browsers.

Forget Farmville, Flash puzzlers and 8-bit home computer emulators. The next generation of browser games will be able to take advantage of DirectX 11 effects, not to mention multi-core processing and both Havok and PhysX physics effects. A new browser plug-in called WebVision will be available for Trinergy's new game engine, Vision Engine 8. This will enable game developers to port all the advanced effects from the game engine over to all the common browsers. Of course, any budding 3D-browser-game dev will face the problem that not every PC has a decent graphics card that can handle advanced graphics effects. Not only that, but limited bandwidth will also limit what effects a developer can realistically implement into a browser game. Nevertheless, this is an interesting development that could result in some tight 3D programming, as well as some much more interesting browser games.
