fredboboss sends news about Mozilla's email client Thunderbird 3, whose release we noted last week.
"Thunderbird 3 contains code from the French military, which decided the open source product was more secure than Microsoft's rival Outlook. The French government is beginning to move to other open source software, including Linux instead of Windows and OpenOffice instead of Microsoft Office. Thunderbird 3 used some of the code from TrustedBird, a generalized and co-branded version of Thunderbird with security extensions built by the French military."

Wow, just wow. This retro Philco PC concept has us basking in a stew of our own biological lust. Designed by SchultzeWORKS design studio, this retro rig combines design elements of the 50's classic Philco Pedictas television, antique typewriters, and just a hint of steampunk. Granted, it doesn't have the clean, minimalistic form of modern designs that appeal to the mass market. But really, isn't that point?

Last April, Microsoft argued that it controlled the netbook OS market for devices sold in certain Microsoft-friendly US retail stores, while ABI Research claims that Linux actually has 32% of the worldwide netbook market, and that its market-share is growing. At the recent Netbook World Summit in Paris France, Aaron J. Seigo, Community leader at the KDE Foundation, and Arnaud Laprévote, CTO at Mandriva Linux, give us their estimation for next year's Linux market share (video) in the consumer laptop market. Their estimation is that Linux will dominate in ARM-powered laptops and that those may take over a significant share of the overall laptop market by their significantly cheaper prices (as low as $80), longer battery life (as long as 20-40 hours on a small battery using the Pixel Qi screens), as well as lower size and weight. Running some of the Chromium OS builds for ARM available shortly and having a full browser experience on those cheaper and better ARM-powered Linux laptops could make it a significant mass market success to shake up the Intel and Microsoft consumer PC/laptop monopoly in its boots

Asa Dotzler, Mozilla's director of community development, has published a brief blog post in which he recommends that Firefox users move from using Google as their main search engine to Bing, citing privacy issues. Disregarding the existence of alternative search engines such as Ask and Yahoo, Dotzler asserts that Bing's privacy policy is better than Google's. Dotzler explains the recommendation with a quote from Eric Schmidt, CEO of Google: 'If you have something that you don't want anyone to know, maybe you shouldn't be doing it in the first place. If you really need that kind of privacy, the reality is that search engines — including Google — do retain this information for some time...' Ars Technica also covers the story.

Michael Atkinson, Australia's controversial Attorney General, has defended the decision to refuse classification to Sega and Rebellion's Aliens vs. Predator, claiming that: "You don’t need to be playing a game in which you impale, decapitate and dismember people."
Speaking on an ABC News piece, Atkinson again defended the fact that Australia has no 18+ or mature rated classification for videogames.
"This is a question of a small number of very zealous gamers trying to impose their will on society. And I think harm society. It’s the public interest versus the small vested interest," he said.
"I accept that 98 per cent, 99 per cent of gamers will tell the difference between fantasy and reality, but the 1 per cent to 2 per cent could go on to be motivated by these games to commit horrible acts of violence," he added.
Because of the lack of an 18+ rating many games either have to be censored in order to be legally released in Australia, as happened with Left 4 Dead 2, or become effectively banned. The latter is currently the situation with Aliens vs. Predator, after Rebellion insisted they would not edit the game to gain a 15+ age rating.
The ABC News feature also includes comments from Australia's IGEA (Interactive Games and Entertainment Association) CEO Ron Curry, who stated that: "It doesn’t seem democratic that a single Attorney General should be able to dictate what the vast Australian population can interact with."
"The government trusts us to be adults with films, but they only want us to be children with games," he added.

A new report from the FTC is claiming minors have access to explicit content via online virtual worlds such as those found in online games. The report makes five recommendations to keep little Johnny away from the harms of Barrens chat: Use more effective age-screening mechanisms to prevent children from registering in adult virtual worlds; Use or enhance age-segregation techniques to make sure that people interact only with others in their age group; Re-examine language filters to ensure that they detect and eliminate messages that violate rules of behavior in virtual worlds; Provide more guidance to community enforcers in virtual worlds so they are better able to review and rate virtual world content, report potential underage users, and report any users who appear to be violating rules of behavior; Employ a staff of specially trained moderators who are equipped to take swift action against rule violations.

Microsoft has open sourced the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool by releasing it under the GPLv2 license. The code is now available on CodePlex, Microsoft's Open Source software project hosting repository, over at wudt.codeplex.com. The actual installer for the tool is now again available for download at the Microsoft Store (2.59MB). (Microsoft previously took responsiblity for the violation.)"

Remember Intel's budget-friendlier Core i3 line that we've been talking about since June? Despite recent leaks the company still hasn't made it officially official, but it's now unofficially officially thanks to a pre-order at a Canadian retailer. If you're getting a little déj* vu right now don't worry, it isn't a glitch in the matrix; this is exactly the same scenario that played out with the Core i5 back in August, about a month before that proc was finally given its coming out party. In other words, expect this 32nm chip -- with its 2.93GHz speed, 512KB of L2 cache, 4MB of L3, and $157 CAD asking price (a mere $10 lower in American) -- to be given the full press release rigmarole sometime around the new year.

The America's Army series of free-to-play shooters cum military recruitment tools has cost the American taxpayer $32.8 million over 10 years.
That's according to figures obtained by GameSpot from the US Government under the Freedom of Information Act. The money's been spent on a number of expansions, new versions, consoles spin-offs and sequels - the latest release, America's Army 3, launched this year.
Originally, the project was intended to cost just $7 million over five years. External development has been cut in favour of an internal US Army development team, according to GameSpot.
Spending isn't drying up, either. The figures show a fairly steady stream of cash leaving the Army's coffers, with the biggest-spending year being during initial development - $5.6m in 2001 - and dipping to a low of $1.3m in 2005, but both 2008 and 2009 saw a budget of well over $3m spent on the game.
The British Army took its first steps into videogame recruitment this year, although former Major Neil Powell argued to Eurogamer that it "would never dream" of fully emulating the America's Army project.
"The US Army is miles ahead of us on that," he said."They understand completely their target audience."

World of Warcraft's Wrath of the Lich King expansion was staggered into 4 phases. The fourth and final phase, patch 3.3, was released on Tuesday. This patch is significant in that it will be the first introduction of one of the most anticipated new features in the game since PvP arenas: the cross-realm random dungeon, as well as the release of new end-game dungeons for 5, 10 and 25-player groups. The patch notes have been posted, and so has a trailer. The ultimate fight against the expansion's antagonist, the Lich King a.k.a. Arthas, will be gated as each of the four wings of the final dungeon are opened in turn — a process that may take several months. The next major patch after 3.3 (presumably 4.0) will be the release of Cataclysm, the next expansion

So far, there are over 35 pages of people posting about why EA released Pandemic Studios' final game, Saboteur, to first the EU on December 4th and then, after knowing full well it did not work properly, to the Americas on December 8th. They have been promising to work on a patch that is apparently now in the QA stage of testing. It is not a small bug; rather, if you have an ATI video card and either Windows 7 or Windows Vista, the majority (90%) of users have the game crash after the title screen. Since the marketshare for ATI is nearly equal to that of Nvidia, and the ATI logo is adorning the front page of the Saboteur website, it seems like quite a large mistake to release the game in its current state.

As anticipated, Google has finally released an official beta version of its Chrome browser for Mac. The initial beta version, termed Build 4.0.249.30, requires Mac OS X Leopard or Snow Leopard, and is only compatible with Intel-based Macs."
And hierofalcon writes with word that Chrome has also been made available as an official Linux Beta.

Take-Two chairman Strauss Zelnick has stated that on-demand gaming services such as those offered by OnLive aren't that appealing to the publisher, despite already committing back catalogue titles to the digital service.
OnLive hopes to offer full PC titles to consumers on-demand and has drummed up support for the service from multiple publishers and developers. However, Zelnick said that the publisher would not be moving from home consoles to such a service in the foreeseable future, and will continue to focus primarily on the packaged goods business.
"The bulk of our business is packaged goods because initial releases are for the console business," Zelnick told the UBS Global Media and Communications Business. "Basically what they [OnLive] are offering is to say 'you go ahead and develop however you want, we'll put it in a live situation and it scales infinitely'.
"If you believe that that's going to occur – and I don't need to opine because it doesn't really speak to our business model – that would meaningfully and beneficially transform the economics of our business. Why? Because we'd create for one platform, not multiple platforms, we wouldn't create inventory, we wouldn't have price protection and you wouldn't have trucks."
"Anything that's good for the broad distribution of our titles to consumers is a good thing so that kind of situation could be very powerful for our consumers and beneficial for us, but it doesn't appear to be around the corner, not at all."
For now, OnLive is just another route to market for PC games, but Zelnick did acknowledge the shift to digital markets, and that he expects first-parties such as Sony and Microsoft to continue to grow their online businesses as packaged goods sales decline.
"I suspect what you'll see is the continuing growth of downloadable content and there will reach a point where even our console first-parties will have good reason to be in the downloading business as opposed to the packaged goods business.
"It would benefit our business but it probably won't be a sea change in our business," he concluded.

Linux netbooks have captured 32% of the global netbook market, says Jeff Orr, an analyst with consumer computer research firm ABI Research. The largest share of netbook sales is in the Asia-Pacific region, including Japan, Australia, and New Zealand, according to Orr. ABI's latest figures align with a statement by Dell executives in February of this year, to the effect that Linux netbooks comprised about 33% of Dell shipments of Dell Inspiron mini 9s netbooks. These data points cast doubt on claims by Microsoft that Windows XP has captured 98% of the netbook market (a figure Microsoft later revised to 93%). In an interview with DesktopLinux.com, Orr made clear that the 32% Linux netbook market share did not include either user-installed Linux or dual-boot systems, but was confined to just pre-installed Linux shipments.

Google has launched real-time search to give users access to up-to-the-second information.
The search giant said it will draw real-time data from over a billion pages on the web.
The new feature will also include updates from Twitter and the social networks of MySpace and Facebook.
"Information is being created at a pace I have never seen before and in this environment, seconds matter," said Google fellow Amit Singhal.
At an event staged at the Computer History Museum in California, the company said this was the first time that any search engine has integrated the real-time web into its results page.
"There is so much information being generated out there that getting you relevant information is the key to the success of a product like this. It's all about relevance, relevance, relevance," said Mr Singhal.
Technical feat
The Silicon Valley company said the feature was now live and would take a couple of days to be rolled out across the world. Updates from Twitter will be included right away, while those from Facebook and MySpace are not expected to be integrated into results until the new year.
Real-time search will also be available on phones
The real-time stream of data will be shown within Google's normal results page.
The feature will also be available on smart phones, such as the iPhone and those running Google's Android operating system.
Google would not be drawn on the financial details of the deals it has done with Twitter, MySpace and Facebook.
Facebook has publicly stated it is not making money on this collaboration and that the updates it will give Google come from the public profile pages that can be seen by anybody on the web.
From a technical standpoint, the company said this was a landmark event in the world of search.
"This is a technical marvel, getting all these updates in seconds, making them searchable right after they are posted and making them available so that anyone in the world can find them," said Google's vice-president of search Marissa Mayer.
"The updates (on Twitter) are so truthful and so in the moment. That is a really, really powerful part of this. Are you at this event right now? Are you on this ski slope right now? And because of that 'right now' element of it , this is hugely valuable data," Ms Mayer told BBC News.
Twitter founder Biz Stone told reporters the company was "super excited to be doing this with Google. Relevance, relevance, relevance - they are good at it, we're not," he said.
Competition drive
Reaction to Google's announcement has been largely positive in the blogosphere.
"It looks really great and is a next step in search," said Bas van den Beld at Searchcowboys.com.
Microsoft has also done a deal to show Twitter's public updates feed
"The announcement signals an aggressive push by Google to maintain its mantle as search-innovation leader amid unaccustomed pressure from rivals," said Ryan Singel from Wired.com
Danny Sullivan of SearchEngineLand said with Microsoft pulling out the stops with its own Bing search engine, Google needed to show it had its eye on the prize.
"From the PR standpoint it would not have been helpful to be a leading information resource and have people pointing out that you don't have certain kinds of information, especially when you have a rival like Bing cutting deals and diligently going after Google," Mr Sullivan told BBC News.
Google has around 65% of the search market while Microsoft's Bing which has just done a deal with Yahoo commands nearly 30%.
Computer vision
The search giant also unveiled Google Goggles, a new visual search feature that lets consumers use a picture instead of keywords as the search query.
The tool compares the image users have taken with Google's database to return relevant information.
"In the nature of computer vision we are at the beginning here and the technology is just getting underway," said Google's vice-president of engineering, Vic Gundotra.
"This today marks the beginning of this visual journey. We are at the cusp of a an entire new computing era where devices will help us explore the world around us."
The feature will be available on the Android platform.
