Signs of recovery driven by massive netbooks growth, decline in business IT spending begins to slow
PC shipments grew by 2.3 per cent in Q3 2009 after three consecutive months of decline, according to a new report from IDC.
As well as a general boost provided by back to school sales, the chief driver of these figures appears to be, and a 37 per cent jump in netbook sales on the last quarter. The segment now accounts for 28 per cent of consumer laptops.
Meanwhile, Decline in business PC sales slowed, fuelling optimism about commercial spending in 2010.
The analyst expects growth to speed up going forward, particulary in emerging markets. It also expects desktop sales to stay flat, but expects a rather specific 18.1 per cent growth in portable computers. The business PC sector is expected to pick up in the second half of 2010.
"Once again, the PC market shows its resiliency," said Loren Loverde, program director IDC Worldwide Trackers. "The speed of market stabilization and growth in key segments reflect the essential role of personal computing today. Technology evolution and falling prices remain a compelling combination. As commercial spending recovers in 2010, we expect to see robust growth over the next several years."

Hi-Rez Studios announced today that Global Agenda, the award winning team-based shooter-MMO, will launch on Monday, February 1, 2010. The game will be available for pre-purchase through the Global Agenda website, Steam and the Amazon.com Marketplace starting today. Players that pre-purchase will receive beta access, in-game items, and other incentives.
Global Agenda players will experience both co-op and competitive multiplayer shooter features after a one-time purchase with no subscription needed. An optional subscription package, called "Global Agenda: Conquest" will be available for players who wish to participate in a massive-scale game of territory control on a persistent world map.
As a special agent playing only the non-subscription features, you may fully level up to eight different agent characters, participating in both player-vs-player and cooperative player-vs-environment missions, as you fight to overturn the totalitarian one-world government, The Commonwealth, and establish yourself inside the game world.
Players in Global Agenda: Conquest form their own groups, called Agencies. These Agencies conquer territory, construct facilities, manufacture vehicles, raid bases, and engage in formal and informal alliances and betrayals on their way toward world domination. The Conquest gameplay will revolve around player-driven politics and emergent gameplay with each battle being resolved via squad-based combat.

The Closed Beta phase of the new free-2-play online strategy game highlight Avalon Heroes saw plenty of hot fighting and has now been concluded very successfully. The selected beta testers who joined the battle on the side of either faction, Oriens or Aeonia, gave one another a really hard time. At the end of the two-week Closed Beta phase from November 25 through December 9, the victory score was 51.5% for Aeonia and 48.5% for Oriens. All of Avalon Heroes' game modes (i.e., battle, scenario and adventure modes) were thoroughly tested, which is evident from the level gains of our ambitious testers.
This means that the fantasy world of Avalon Heroes is almost ready for the rush of the Open Beta phase which will begin in a few weeks. Whether the Aeonia faction will be able to hold on to their narrow winning margin, or whether Oriens will manage to win the upper hand in battle, is going to be decided in the near future.
Avalon Heroes is a true genre highlight for adventure fans, combining real-time strategy and RPG with competitive elements. The title is primarily focused on the development of up to a hundred customizable characters whose skills players get to expand in classic role-playing tradition. Single player campaigns and multi-player modes alike prepare adventurers for the greatest challenge of all: fighting and developing a strategy that will lead to final victory. But it is impossible for players to prevail in impressive online battles unless they find the right allies. After all, it takes a team to decide the battle between the two factions, Oriens and Aeonia.

Cyanide and Focus Home Interactive are proud to announce the launch of the Blood Bowl World Cup!
Involving all the coaches of Blood Bowl on PC throughout the world, this is the first major competition organized for the Blood Bowl video game since its release.
The first qualification phases – open to all Blood Bowl coaches – have already launched for the Winter Championship, the first main tournament of the season. At the end of it the Winter Champion will be determined, during the Winter Tournament final match at Games Day in France, and will be the first finalist aspiring to the title of World Champion!
The “Winter Champion” will then challenge the winner of the Summer Championship at the “Super Blood Bowl” in November 2010. Both finalists will be awarded a substantial cash prize, and the winner of this final match will be awarded the title of “Blood Bowl video game World Champion 2010”!

Games-Masters.com today announced that the latest content update for its hit free-to-play massively multiplayer online game CABAL Online is now available for free download. CABAL Reloaded, the fifth update of this year, makes significant improvements to the player experience, introducing three new dungeons, a new looting system and two additional ring slots.
"This update delivers change that will make a real improvement to the game play of both new and existing players." said Thorsten Schauer, director of Games-Masters.com. "With some major changes for all levels, there truly is something for everyone."
CABAL Reloaded revamps parts of the game that were in need of change, with the development team responding to the criticisms and feedback from the game-community. The starting levels, previously seen as lacking in content, have been made more enjoyable with the introduction of new lower-level dungeons, improved graphics, an increase to the drop rate of low-level equipment, and a complete overhaul of the quest rewards for the lower levels. The group play has also been improved, with a new party interface and a looting system which allows party members to bid or lot on high-value items that have dropped.
The update arrives just in time for the CABALYMPICS tournament, the new game world which challenges players to complete a series of challenges for prizes worth over 5000 Euros, providing the ideal arena for contestants to compete and show their skills.

Paradox today has announced new content for the heralded fantasy strategy title, Majesty 2: The Fantasy Kingdom Sim. Subjects of the royal lands of Ardania can look forward to an expanded adventure with an upcoming patch, and for the first time, a free map editor that enables the loyal subjects of the Majesty 2 community to create their own missions and battles for themselves.
Upcoming Patch
A third patch is in the works which will include fixes and updates, as well as a much requested randomization feature. With the patch, it will be possible to assign randomization to the original campaign maps. Randomization will be added to items in treasure chests, non-quest monster dens, the special zones for trading posts, and temples.
Brand New Map Editor
As a reward to those looking to further control the magic with their own hands, Paradox and 1C: Ino-Co plan to open up the game and provide endless replayability with the release of an official Majesty 2 map editor. Street Gears, the free cel-shaded in-line skating MMO available in French and German at the gPotato.eu portal, launches a new update. Highly anticipated by Street Gears players, today sees the introduction of a brand new feature in Park Town today – the Clan System.
First, a little history lesson: In the early years of the so called Inline Republic, a single man stood strong and helped to create the first Clan. His name was King and the name of the Clan was "Dragons". After the creation of the Dragons, many more Clans followed and the Twin cities of Emberton and Park Town had a multitude of racing tracks and enough room for hundreds of Riders from all over the world to practice their Tricks and compete against each other.
Years passed and the influence of the Dragons over Park Town grew stronger. Two groups of the Dragons managed to infiltrate Park Town for a while, threatening to destroy the Riders. Luckily they were defeated, but a return of the Dragons seems inevitable. The only way to guarantee the survival of Park Town was to destroy the Dragons and re-establish Clans...
From today the Clans have returned to Street Gears and every rider will be able to create or join a clan to work together and gain achievements while preparing for the upcoming clan wars.
A second new feature is implemented in the game from today – the Speedstar Ranking. Do you think that you are fast and that you have a good technique? Then you should join our weekly competition, where we are looking for the fastest rider. Win the emblem and the unique speedstar scarf to show everybody that you are the fastest rider in town. Being the speedstar will also provide an XP bonus for all players in your racing room.

PC gamers may be given the chance to modify Modern Warfare 2 in future, despite Infinity Ward's decision to ditch dedicated servers.
Writing on his Twitter feed, IW's Robert Bowling said "there may be some mod tool news coming in the future" and that he would pass it along once there was.
Bowling also said in a later tweet that he was "preparing an in depth #MW2 Status Report for players to stay aware of what we're addressing and how it's progressing".
Infinity Ward has been busy since the game's 10th November release cracking down on cheats, exploits and bugs - including the notorious javelin exploit - and Bowling has been servicing the community directly via Twitter.

“In the third chapter of Samantha Swift, we explore the Mecca of archaeological lore, Atlantis,” said Matt Lichtenwalter, vice president of product development of MumboJumbo. “We join Sam as she’s on the hunt for pieces of a sacred musical device that she needs to thwart the plans of the super villain.”
In Samantha Swift and the Mystery from Atlantis, Samantha’s faced with an all-new villain who has hatched a mind-control scheme that she is desperately trying to prevent. Sam’s quest takes her across the globe looking for pieces of a mystical Atlantean treasure. The third chapter in the saga takes players to new locations, introduces new characters, and revisits some of Samantha’s closest allies and the Museum of Secrets Lost.
“We’re excited to take fans of the franchise on the third Samantha Swift expedition,” said Lichtenwalter. “The Mystery from Atlantis will have all of the elements that our fans have come to know and love—great hidden object gameplay, adventure and story elements that keep them intrigued and clever puzzles throughout. But, we’ve really stepped it up in this installment by adding fun additional challenges for the seasoned hidden object game player.”
This installment of Samantha Swift offers players a few new challenges with two game play modes, Adventurer and Expert Adventurer. Players can choose if they want to play in a relaxed setting (Adventurer), or a more challenging, timed and scored gameplay mode (Expert Adventurer). This chapter also includes a collectibles element: players can collect hidden Swift Birds throughout the game to unlock an Unlimited Hidden Object game mode. The new Expert Adventurer mode also features a point system that introduces an additional challenge for seasoned players, awarding bonuses for speed and accuracy.

The first episode of experimental Half-Life 2: Episode 2 mod Post Script releases today.
In it, players can explore the remains of a town destroyed by its own tragedy, while solving environmental puzzles and uncovering the mystery of how, somewhere along the line, the whole world fell out of existence completely.
Despite being built in a first-person shooter engine, Post Script is a slow-paced adventure with a focus on exploration and discovery. Episodes last between five and 30 minutes, depending on the playing style of each individual.
"I'm really curious to see what people make of it," said writer, designer and developer Lewis Denby, who is also the editor of Resolution Magazine and a freelance video game journalist. "This is a labour of love in a very real way. It's a solo project, a snapshot of a personal design vision I have, and an experiment into what does and doesn't work in video games. I write about the medium, but I've never had the opportunity to tackle development like this before. It's absolutely a learning curve, but hopefully people will share the ideas I have, and get something out of their time with Post Script."
A further four episodes are planned for the coming months.

NEXON Europe today announces the launch of a brand new expansion pack for their free-to-play MMORPG MapleStory. This update includes the eagerly awaited Pirates job class and Leafre map addition, plus a whole number of events that will keep players entertained throughout the holiday season.
The Pirate job class has arrived in MapleStory! This highly anticipated update will allow European Maplers the chance to experience new gameplay features, which can be used throughout the entire Maple World. It also opens a variety of new maps, many of which are aboard the Pirate ship, Nautilus, the ultimate Pirate haven. Once a pirate, players can develop their characters and choose one of two paths through tiers of job progression. Pirates can advance to become Brawlers, the masters of hand-to-hand combat, or Gunslingers, dynamic quick-draws that drown foes in a hail of iron lead, for a 2nd Job, Marauders and Outlaws as a 3rd Job.
As well as the Pirates addition, a brand new map will also be revealed for players today. Leafre is an egg themed area found in the West of Ossyria, and is one of the most powerful places in MapleStory. With some of the strongest monsters and most challenging of quests its debut also sees the arrival of the fourth job advancement in Europe soon. High level players and those on their way can enjoy this town that is definitely worth a visit.
To celebrate this holiday season and as a gift to all European Maplers, a number of in-game events are also being announced. Players can expect a number of special promotions, special quests and exciting events with luring rewards to enjoy in and around the game throughout the festive days.

Gameforge today announced their upcoming Holiday promotion for Gates of Andaron, which offers players Holiday-themed activities to offer exclusive, limited edition in-game items. Starting on Dec. 16th and lasting until Dec. 30th, 2010, Gates of Andaron will be full of Holiday cheer with fresh decorations and unique quests to bring in the season.
From Dec. 16 to Dec. 30, Gates of Andaron will play host to a number of special Christmas-themed events. Upon logging in, players will notice a new letter in their inventory with instructions on how to gain a new snowball-throwing ability. Once equipped this ability allows the player to complete special quests to receive rare, limited edition items including Rudolph Chocolate, a Deer Horn Hat, and a Silver Bell.
On Dec. 30th, Gates of Andaron will transition to the New Year’s Event, offering an entirely new set of quests and rare items to continue the Holiday cheer. Players will receive instructions on how to participate in a letter, which includes an item that increases their HP and MP temporarily. Holiday-themed items will be dropped by enemies, which can then be used to create rare status-boosting items.
In Gates of Andaron, war has ravaged the kingdoms of Valorian and Derion. Those who were once allies are now hostile enemies. While the origin of the conflict has been lost over time, both kingdoms have created their own versions of the story behind the bloody conflict. The only thing certain is that the key to ending the war between the two kingdoms lies hidden in ancient, almost-forgotten tales and sagas. The quest to reveal the truth and end the everlasting struggle is a task for only the bravest of adventurers.
