Interplay has said that its "post-apocalyptic massively multiplayer online game", codenamed Project V13, will enter public beta in 2012.
Most observers agree that Project V13 is intended to be the Fallout MMO that Interplay has been talking about since 2004. However, its right to make that game is currently being disputed in the law courts by Fallout rights holder Bethesda.
The beta news came in a press release announcing that Interplay had finalised its agreement to develop Project V13 with Bulgarian developer Masthead, currently making Earthrise - a, guess what, post-apocalyptic MMO. (Good spot, Videogamer.)
"Masthead's technology is impressive and perfect for our Project V13," said Interplay chief Herve Caen. "Its team is passionate to bring our vision and gameplay to the market. This MMOG will have many unique features that we will disclose before launch of the public beta in 2012."
In fact, Masthead's involvement with Project V13 was confirmed back in April last year.
Meanwhile, the court case has also turned up a "World of Warcraft type MMO" in development at Bethesda, although this is believed to be an Elder Scrolls game rather than a rival Fallout project.

The first widespread attack to leverage the Internet Explorer flaw that Microsoft patched in an emergency update Thursday morning has surfaced. By midday Thursday Symantec had spotted hundreds of Web sites that hosted the attack code. The attack installs a Trojan horse program that is able to bypass some security products and then give hackers access to the system, said Joshua Talbot, a security intelligence manager with Symantec. Once it has infected a PC, the Trojan sends a notification e-mail to the attackers, using a US-based, free e-mail service that Symantec declined to name."
Relatedly, reader N!NJA was among several to point out that Microsoft has apparently been aware of this flaw since September.

[Jakob] sent in his method of dealing with broken laptop hinges. Broken hinges are a plague. We have no less than 4 laptops lying around that are beyond repair with broken hinges. Some are just propped up against things, some have had box hinges glued to them and some are just waiting to die slowly from non use. [Jakob] has a nice neat conversion where he basically made a tablet. We’ve seen that before as well as picture frames. His version, while being quite possibly easier than most of the others, has a neat design aspect. An extended lip at the bottom fits in a groove in a plastic slab. All in one PC becomes a tablet in an instant. Not too shabby for a broken laptop. It looks like he needs to pop a touch screen kit on it though.

We learned back in November that Windows 7 was having a much (much!) better first few days in retail than Vista did when it launched, but now that the system has had a full quarter and change to make an impression, it looks as if that growth isn't slowing down. According to new figures from Net Application, Win7 is achieving a higher level of market penetration in a faster amount of time than Vista did; after a month, Vista was stuck at 0.93 percent, while Win7 nailed the 4 percent mark. After two months, Win7 jumped to 5.71 percent, while Vista was barely over 2 percent after the same amount of time. 'Course, the newest version of Windows had a holiday season to help it out right from the get-go, but there's still no denying that people are flocking to the system even now. What's most interesting, however, is that the overall market share of Windows 7 alone has now surpassed all OS X versions that are being tracked (10.4, 10.5 and 10.6), so put that in your pipe and smoke it. Smoke it long and hard.

If you thought Chrome OS was all about the Chrome, here are some words of reassurance from Google's Matthew Papakipos, engineering director for the project. In a marathon interview with Ars Technica, he notes that Chrome OS will have its own integrated media player, and although the focus remains on being "lean and mean," it'll not neglect basic system functionality. Current thinking is to keep JPEG and other media file handlers within the tab structure, with native and web apps being melded seamlessly into the browser experience. That may all still change, of course, since development is also noted to be a good year away from a consumer release. Hit up the read link for more, much more, on the past and future of Google's featherweight OS.

During a presentation at Linux.conf.au 2010 in Wellington, LWN.net founder and kernel contributor Jonathan Corbet offered an analysis of the code contributed to the Linux kernel between December 24 2008 and January 10 2010. The Linux world makes much of its community roots, but when it comes to developing the kernel of the operating system, it's less a case of 'volunteers ahoy!' and more a case of 'where's my pay?'"
It's not clear from the article why anyone should perceive a contradiction between having high ideals and getting paid to do something you enjoy.

The MMO-developing band over at Cryptic has released an absolutely massive update to the Star Trek Online open beta. There are literally pages of fixes and changes, though Cryptic has thankfully distilled the major "headline" changes into a few bullet points:
The level cap has been removed, which should be music to the ears of the pre-release power levelers out there.
Cardassian and Romulan space is now accessible to Federation players, too, and there are some changes to bridge officer mechanics.
Additionally, the update allows players to use the mini-map to scan anomalies. As we all know, anomalies need scanning like nobody's business, so that's good news.
Perhaps most important of all is that Spock himself, Mr. Leonard Nimoy, now offers an "audio journal overview" upon entering a new sector of space. That's great news because, just like bacon, everything's better with Nimoy. Hit the source link for the full patch release notes (be sure to click through the splash page).

Microsoft will release its emergency patch for Internet Explorer on Thursday, the company said, as it also admitted that attacks can be hidden inside rigged Office documents. 'We are planning to release the update as close to 10:00 a.m. PST as possible,' said Jerry Bryant, a program manager with the IE group. Microsoft has updated the security advisory it originally published last week when it acknowledged a zero-day IE vulnerability had been used by hackers to break into the corporate networks of Google and other major Western companies. Google has alleged that the attacks were launched by Chinese attackers. Subsequently, security experts have offered evidence that links the attacks to China

The Open-PC project has announced that its first PC will be available at the end of February for €359. They claim the mini-ITX desktop machine is energy efficient, consumer ready, easy to upgrade, and — significantly — uses only hardware that has free software drivers available. As you'd expect, it comes with GNU/Linux which is running KDE (a €10 donation to the KDE project in included in the price). Interestingly all the key decisions on design, pricing etc. have been made by the community via online polls. The spec of the machine is pretty reasonable for the price: Atom 1.6GHz dual-core processor, 3GB RAM, 160GB HDD, Intel 950 graphics

As company president sees Warcraft’s gigantic subscriber base as a glass half empty
Blizzard is not ready to begin development on a full sequel to World Of Warcraft, the studio has confirmed.
Company president Mike Morhaime said that the studio’s current business strategy is to avoid making long-term plans, citing rapid changes the industry is experiencing.
“We really don’t have World of Warcraft planned out five or ten years,” he said in an interview for the first edition of World of Warcraft magazine.
“We have it planned through our next expansion and we have ideas for what should come after that, but nothing is really set in stone, and probably shouldn’t be.”
Morhaime indicated that the studio’s primary business goal is to accelerate the popularity of its breakthrough MMO.
“I think there’s an opportunity for us to continue evolving the game and to continue to make it more accessible so that the people who decide to play World of Warcraft, the game is ready for them,” he said.
“Things change, people come up with new ideas, as the game evolves [and] as the industry evolves.”
Now five years since release, World Of Warcraft boasts over 12 million active monthly subscribers worldwide. The trailblazing success of the IP was a key factor in the $18.8 billion Activision Blizzard merger, which was finalised back in 2008.
However, Morhaime revealed that his ambitions for the game far surpass the record figures:
“Well, 12 million doesn’t sound like a big number to me,” he said.
“Think about the number of people around the world who are getting onto the internet for the first time, the people who are just getting broadband, and the people who will be getting broadband over the next five years – that’s a lot of people who are not playing World of Warcraft.
“Maybe there are twelve million people who aren’t playing.”

Namco Bandai says that Collector's Edition will be the only version available on the High Street
The collector’s edition of Star Trek Online will be the only SKU of Atari’s anticipated MMORPG to hit UK shelves.
Namco Bandai Partners has told MCV that it will focus only on the Gold Edition in order to encourage consumers to buy the boxed product, over the digital version.
Retail-only incentives will be key to the initiative, with the collector’s edition boasting a T-shirt, map, postcards, in-game DLC uniforms and a 30-day timecard for playing online.
“This will be the only edition available at launch,” explained Namco Bandai Partners product manager Lauren Bradley.
“The reason for this approach is to provide value for the Star Trek fans that wish to buy boxed product rather than downloading the game.
“These items were developed from feedback we received from Trekkies. Star Trek fans spend an average of £250 per year on the franchise, so this will be a valued edition to their collection.”
Planned marketing initiatives include sampling events, online advertising and a ‘Tweet in Klingon’ social media application.

Namco Bandai has launched Namco Arcade on Facebook, allowing users to sample mobile games on the social networking site before buying content and sending it directly to their handset.
Facebook users will get exclusive access to Namco content, with Katamari, Arcade Gold, Pac-Man Pinball and Time Crisis Elite the first titles available.
"Namco Arcade is a great way for us to complement the traditional carrier channels of our distribution partners with an alternative channel for users to try and buy our games," said Barry O'Neill, president of Namco Europe.
"Namco Arcade is a great way for us to reach a whole new audience, and allows us to reduce the overall cost to customers, while offering a new level of service and interactivity. The ability to discover and share games easily will be a key driver for the mobile games market in the future."

Many Modern Warfare 2 players still debate the game's best piece of weaponry. Fortunately, hackers have settled this timeless dispute once and for all: It is, of course, the gun that hurtles your opponent back in time, back to the days when he or she was a lowly, classless Private. Okay, there's apparently a new homebrewed glitch which accomplishes this feat, not a gun -- but it would be awesome if there was. We're envisioning the Infanto Ray which Borf used in Space Ace to turn awesome-Dexter into pantywaist-Dexter.
Yes, according to a few incensed forum posters, hackers have allegedly found a way to augment the amount of experience rewarded for killing them. Instead of the usual 50- or 100-point increments we usually see, these dubious players can punish their murderers with negative five million points, dropping their hard-earned rank back to level 1. Check out a NSFW video after the break to see this horrific new exercise (which appears to only be happening on Xbox Live) in motion. We've contacted the folks at Infinity Ward to find out what they're doing to crack down on these total Borfs.

What a difference a decade makes. Speaking with Game Informer magazine, Activision boss Bobby Kotick has spoken of the massive disparity between how much Blizzard was worth in 1995 compared to the price Kotick paid in 2007.
In '95, the Warcraft creators were purchased by Davidson & Associates. For a sum that, in 1995, Kotick believed to be outrageous.
"That year Activision probably had 60 million in revenues", he said. "They said they paid seven million dollars for Blizzard. I'm like 'Are you out of your minds? They're like a contract developer! They have Warcraft but what else do they have? You paid SEVEN million! That's insane!"
No, what's insane is the fact twelve years later Activision paid $7 billion for the developer, whose World of Warcraft game alone ("what else do they have?") generates $100 million a month in revenue.
