Intel is hoping to build a new games platform out of the immensely popular netbook device – and wants developers to kick start the revolution.
The chipset giant is currently accepting entries in its ‘Games For Netbooks’ contest, and will award three winning entrants $1,000 as well as dev tools and exposure.
Developers making games for the contest won’t be giving up their IP, Intel says.
An overall winner will also be awarded a holiday with as much as $5,000 of expenses paid.
The deadline for the contest – which first launched last month – is 3rd October 2010 at 12PM GMT.
Intel is partnering with a British dev tools group, known as The Game Creators, as part of the contest.
Entrants should to create their netbook games with either DarkBASIC Professional or Dark GDK, and Intel wants the entries to be designed specifically for netbooks (running at 1024 x 600 resolution, for example).
Each entry cannot exceed 250MB, nor can it include third-party content.
Netbook sales have rocketed in recent years due to the entry-level prices for the products, and many analysts say the devices are on the cusp of becoming a phenomenon in emerging economies.

Google has released a new version of its Chrome browser and has included more than a dozen security fixes in the update. The new version, 6.0.472.53, was released two years to the day after the company pushed out the first version of Chrome. Google Chrome 6 includes patches for 14 total security vulnerabilities, including six high-priority flaws, and the company paid out a total of $4,337 in bug bounties to researchers who reported the vulnerabilities. A number of the flaws that didn't qualify for bug bounties were discovered by members of Google's internal security team.

There's an unpatched vulnerability in Internet Explorer 8 that enables simple data-stealing attacks by Web-based attackers and could lead to an attacker hijacking a user's authenticated session on a third-party site. The flaw, which a researcher said may have been known since 2008, lies in the way IE8 handles CSS. The vulnerability can be exploited through an attack scenario known as cross-domain theft, and researcher Chris Evans originally brought the problem to light in a blog post in December. At the time, all of the major browsers were vulnerable to the attack, but since then, Firefox, Chrome, Safari and Opera all have implemented a simple defense mechanism. The upshot of this is that if a victim has visited a given Web site, authenticated himself to the site, and then visits a site controlled by an attacker, the attacker would have the ability to hijack the user's session and extract supposedly confidential data. This attack works on the latest, fully patched release of IE8.

Remember when a 1.4GHz processor was deemed the world's fastest? Man, that was ages ago. Recently, IBM has laid claim to that very record, with its 5.2GHz z196 processor being the focal point. Of course, we've seen a number of consumer chips hum along at speeds well beyond that (thanks to sophisticated cooling systems, of course), but this here enterprise chip does it without any liquid nitrogen-based assistance. It's a four-core slab that was manufactured using the outfit's 45 nanometer technology, boasting 1.4 billion transistors and the ability to handle more than 50 billion instructions per second. Interestingly, Fujitsu's Venus CPU is said to handle a staggering 128 billion calculations per second, so we're guessing that IBM won't be snagging this crown without any debate from the competition. At any rate, there's a very convincing video waiting for you after the break, and no, you won't find this thing in your next Alienware anytime soon.

2K games broke the news on Twitter and then showcased it at the PAX games convention over the weekend.
The game, first announced in 1998, was cancelled in 2009 when its developer - 3D Realms - collapsed.
The title has now been resurrected by US developer Gearbox Software which said it will be released on PC, PS3 and XBox 360 in 2011.
If it does, the game will become the record holder for the longest game between releases, thought to be currently held by StarCraft, which had a 12-year gap between releases.
Eternal wait
The original Duke Nukem was released in 1991 and was a side scrolling shooter that pitted the player against an army of robots.
The game evolved into a true first person shooter in 1996 with the release of Duke Nukem 3D. This also proved popular, but faced stiff competition from the likes of Quake and Unreal which, unlike Duke Nukem, used 3D polygons instead of sprites, resulting in a far better looking game.
Nevertheless, the series had legions of fans who have waited in expectation for the next release.
For many, the wait has been endless, prompting the game to win Wired Magazine's "Vapourware of the Year" award on numerous occasions, a prize given to products that are talked about, but never actually get released.
The new Duke Nukem Forever deal sees Gearbox not just securing the rights to the game, but also the eight team members from 3D Realms who worked on the project.
"It's unbelievable, it kicks ass and it's totally going to happen," said Randy Pitchford, president of Gearbox Software.
"The Gearbox Software team and I are ecstatic that we have grown to a position to be able to pick up and carry the torch and help Duke rise back to glory in his time of need," he added.
Scott Miller, who co-founded the now defunct 3D Realms, said that Gearbox had been "handpicked as the new home for Duke Nukem".

NCSoft's has today released the first major expansion for its fairly popular MMO Aion, and it's completely free. Sort of. We think.
In Aion: Assault on Balaurea, players will team up to "launch a massive counter assault against the invading Balaur in their homeland. Along with the ability to explore new and updated zones and instances, the expansion provides players with an increased level cap, new weapons, items and skills as well as enhanced flight mechanics. Because exploring is never fun alone, Aion introduces completely unique, functional pets equipped with in-game benefits to keep characters company along the way."
That's out in US, Australia, New Zealand and Singapore today. Confusingly, the PR says it hits retail in Europe on Friday, with an SRP of €29.99. That looks like the bundle price for the game, the expansion plus the "exclusive premium Speckled Ailu (Panda) Pack pet along with a limited-time retailer specific pet exclusive". Or something.
In UK the participating retailer is Game. Hit the source link for more info.

Looks as if the Internet Explorer 9 Beta has now leaked on video, and -- surprise, surprise -- it looks exactly like Internet Explorer! If you were out hoping for a major overhaul, it looks as if you'll need to pick a new wish to cross your fingers for. Design wise, the IE9 beta shown in the video past the break is no drastic departure from IE8, though the internals should obviously be revamped quite a bit. The rest of the world is still awaiting that September 15th launch date, but you and your impatient soul can watch an early build peak at 95/100 (so close!) on the Acid3 test with just a couple of clicks. Enjoy!

Over on the IE blog Microsoft's Ted Johnson writes, 'With IE9, developers have a fully-hardware accelerated display pipeline that runs from their markup to the screen. Based on their blog posts, the hardware-accelerated implementations of other browsers generally accelerate one phase or the other, but not yet both. Delivering full hardware acceleration, on by default, is an architectural undertaking. When there is a desire to run across multiple platforms, developers introduce abstraction layers and inevitably make tradeoffs which ultimately impact performance and reduce the ability of a browser to achieve 'native' performance. Getting the full value of the GPU is extremely challenging and writing to intermediate layers and libraries instead of an operating system's native support makes it even harder. Windows' DirectX long legacy of powering of the most intensive 3D games has made DirectX the highest performance GPU-based rendering system available.' Some Mozillians hit back in the comments to the IE Blog post and others have written blog posts of their own. PC Mag's Michael Muchmore seems to conclude that IE9 and Firefox 4 are more or less the same (despite the title of his article) while Chrome currently lags behind."

Following up on the SCI game testing, a testing session for the next ScummVM release has arrived! It's time to point and click at several other ScummVM games that need testing before we can publish a new version.
This testing season we have two new games up for testing: Fascination and Maniac Mansion (C64 version).
Contrary to previous testing seasons, not all games will be tested. The number of games supported has grown significantly and testing all the games is too much. So for this testing season, and testing seasons onward, we've decided to only put games up for testing that have had significant changes to their codebase since the last release. As usual, the list of games to be tested is on the wiki. The page also lists games that are not required to be tested, but feel free to test them too if you don't have any of the other games that require testing.
Note that the SCI games are not on the testing page. The SCI testing went well and they do not need to be tested again.
So what are you waiting for? Go test some ScummVM games using a daily build and report any bugs you find to the bug tracker. After completing a playthrough of a game, please report it on the forums so it can be added to the release testing wiki page. Make sure you provide the version, language, and platform of your game when reporting a completion. Consult the testing guidelines should you have any other questions.

Google is co-hosting a new HTML5 Game Jam event – a foretoken perhaps to the search engine giant’s preferred web format as the world waits for it to launch its new social game business.
The company has been on an acquisition spree of late, buying up game studios in what is thought to part of a wider plan to become Facebook’s biggest rival in the social space.
Supporting HTML5 could be key in Google’s poorly-shrouded intent to bring gaming to its web browser, Chrome, as well as Android phones and even Apple devices.
The company will be co-hosting the HTML5 Game Jam event along with Spil Games, a casual game group that recently overhauled its entire web presence to support the HTML5 standard.
The value of HTML5 has routinely been discussed in contrast to Adobe’s Flash platform, chiefly because the latter is blocked on Apple’s iOS devices in favour of the former.
The HTML5 Game Jam takes place in Hilversum, The Netherlands, on the weekend of October 9-10, 2010. It will see 80 developers pitch ideas, crack into programming, and end the marathon event with a short presentation.
“This game jam is the latest development in our HTML5 strategy, and we're thrilled to work with Google on this,â€said Peter Driessen, CEO of Spil Games.
“An open, free weekend of hardcore coding fits perfectly in our strategy to unite the world in play, and we can't wait to see what comes out of the weekend.â€

Microsoft has urged Windows users to block ongoing attacks against Adobe's popular PDF viewer by deploying one of Microsoft's enterprise tools. Adobe echoed Microsoft's advice, saying the Enhanced Migration Experience Toolkit (EMET) would stymie attacks targeting Reader and Acrobat. Called 'scary' and 'clever,' the in-the-wild exploit went public last week when security researcher Mila Parkour reported it to Adobe after analyzing a rogue PDF document attached to spam. Adobe first warned users Wednesday of the threat, but at the time gave users no advice on how to protect themselves until a patch was ready. Microsoft stepped in on Friday. 'The good news is that if you have EMET enabled ... it blocks this exploit,' said Fermin Serna and Andrew Roths, two engineers with the Microsoft Security Response Center in an entry on the group's blog."
A Symantec blog post suggests the people exploiting this vulnerability may be the 'Aurora' group responsible for the attacks on Google late last year.

A fresh question mark hangs over the viability of the pre-owned software market this morning after a ruling in the US Court of Appeal upheld a developer’s right to prevent the resale of its software.
Gamasutra reports that Autodesk has successfully won a case in which defendant Timothy Vernor had been arguing for his right to buy and use a pre-owned copy of design program AutoCAD.
Vernor acquired the software in an office sale and then listed it for sale on eBay along with a serial number.
Autodesk, however, argued that its End User License Agreement states that the software is licensed, and that the licence itself was non-transferable. It also states that if the user chooses to upgrade the program older versions should be destroyed.
The defendant, however, argued that since he had not agreed to any licence the conditions should not apply to him.
In 2008 a US Court ruled in Vernor’s favour, but following an appeal from Autodesk that ruling has now been overturned.

It seems Google's bug bounty program is paying some nice dividends, for both sides. Less than two weeks after releasing version 6.0 of its Chrome browser, Google has pushed out another Chrome release, which includes fixes for 10 security bugs, seven of which are rated either critical or high. Google Chrome 6.0.472.59 comes out just 12 days after the last Chrome release, which fixed 14 security bugs. As part of its bug bounty program, Google paid out $4,000 in rewards to researchers who disclosed security flaws in the browser. Most of the security flaws fixed in the new release are in the Windows version of Chrome, but the most serious bug is only in Chrome for Mac.

We all knew today was the day, but just in case you've been zoned out in Kauai the past few weeks, Microsoft's getting set to release its refreshed build of Internet Explorer to the general public today. IE9 Beta is said to be a beta that's essentially done, so you shouldn't have too much to fear when the download links go live later today. The crew at Redmond claims that it's far more compliant with HTML5, CSS3 and SVG2 standards, and that it's the only game in town with full hardware acceleration. Keep an eye on that source link for a shot at downloading your copy later today, and if you're terrified of offending your existing Firefox or Chrome installation, we'll do you one better -- our own in-depth review will be going live in a matter of hours.

The Insignia Infocast is a $169 simple media device being sold at Best Buy. Marketed as a way to share photos and run Chumby apps, hackers are starting to release packages to extend its features. [Bunnie] shows us one package in particular that allows it to be used as a web browser with an external keyboard. With an 800Mhz processor, an 800×600 touch screen, and 2 GB of memory, we can see that this is just scratching the surface of what is possible. [Bunnie] points out that some people are working on porting Android to the device, and if you really feel adventurous, you can dig into the hardware.

Those who have written off IE as being slow and old-looking are in for a surprise. The just-released Internet Explorer 9 beta is dramatically faster than its predecessor, sports an elegant, stripped-down interface and adds some useful new features, writes Preston Gralla. Even more surprising than the stripped-down interface is IE9 beta's speed. Internet Explorer has long been the slowest browser by a wide margin. IE9 has turned that around in dramatic fashion, using hardware acceleration and a new JavaScript engine it calls Chakra, which compiles scripts in the background and uses multiple processor cores. In this beta, my tests show it overtaking Firefox for speed, and putting up a respectable showing against Safari, Opera and Chrome. It's even integrated into Windows 7. One big problem: It will not work on Windows XP. So, forget the performance and security boost, many enterprises and netbook users.

Adobe seems to have made an about face regarding their support for native 64-bit Linux support for Flash today, and released a new preview Flash plugin named 'Square.' This includes a native 64-bit version for Linux, which I have verified works on my Debian Lenny LTSP server by simply copying libflashplayer.so to /usr/lib/iceweasel/plugins — with sound (which I was never able to figure out with running the 32-bit version with nspluginwrapper and pulseaudio).

Today we released OpenTTD 1.0.4. Nothing seriously was reported since the release candidate, and as we are confident the testers did a good job, we are also confident that it is a nice release!
Note that there is a new translation available in the release: You can now also enjoy OpenTTD in Belarusian. A good moment to thank all translators continuously maintaining and updating the translations.

The social gaming market will continue to be driven by Facebook and PC for some time, says Trip Hawkins, boss of publisher Digital Chocolate.
"Anyone who thinks it is easier to make money on the iPhone or Android rather than on Facebook is wrong," he tells ME.
"The mobile infrastructure, social features and web device population are just not there yet, and it will take some time. Mobile games will become more social but it is a rope that a game publisher cannot push right now."
Digital Chocolate continues to release games for iPhone and mobile platforms, but its focus has diversified with a series of popular Facebook games too.
"Inevitably and eventually, the mobile side will be huge, but it's not now and it's not even next," he says.
"It's still going to be Facebook and the PC for a while longer."
Companies like ngmoco have focused on trying to make freemium social games take off on iPhone, while Facebook giant Zynga recently brought its Farmville game to Apple's platform.
Meanwhile, Gameloft is the latest mobile publisher to dip its toes in the Facebook waters, with the launch of the Farmville-esque Green Farm.
Hawkins thinks that publishers are too quick to swing between the merits of one platform and another.
"Too many people are running from one side of the boat to the other, and back again!" he says.

Most browser benchmarks are isolated, artificial tests that can be gamed by browser vendors optimizing those specific cases. With only those benchmarks to go on, the folks at LucidChart were skeptical that the IE9 beta would actually outperform other modern browsers in real-world applications. To separate hype from reality, they built their first browser benchmarking tool, based in LucidChart itself. This benchmark is to SunSpider what a Left4Dead 2 benchmark is to 3Dmark Vantage. Product specs don't matter, only real-world performance on a real-world application. The results were surprising. IE9 held its own pretty well (with a few caveats), and the latest Firefox 4 beta came in dead last.

A new report from American stat analysis group NPD suggests that the value of digital PC games market is now far greater than the boxed sector.
The numbers claims that 11.2m PC games were purchased in North America between January and June 2010. In the same period just 8.2m boxed PC games were purchased at retail.
However, the good news for bricks and mortar retail is that the real money remains in physical product – in total dollar revenue terms traditional retail still accounts for 57 per cent of the market.

As reported over at Phoronix, the Direct X 11 API now has an open source implementation on top of Gallium3d which should ease porting of games to Linux with or without Wine. While still in its infancy, you can see where this is heading. All this while Microsoft hasn't offered DX11 for their own aging WindowsXP. Could it be that Linux may soon support this Microsoft API better than Microsoft itself?"

Microsoft expected Internet Explorer 9 to be popular, but after more than two million people downloaded the IE9 beta in the first two days after its release, the software giant is having a hard time choosing which eye-popping statistics to cite. Microsoft says its "Beauty of the Web" site, which illustrates the aesthetic advantages of IE9's support for HTML5 and hardware acceleration, has had more the 9 million visits and 26 million page views since the IE9 beta launch on Sept. 15. Microsoft's developer-oriented IE Test Drive Site has had 4 million page views during the same period.

An official Final Fantasy XIV controller exists and it's due out in Europe and North America on 30th September.
The PC controller is from Sunflex Europe, "known for the quality gaming brand snakebyte".
"We are pleased to offer gamers a high-quality controller for the release of Final Fantasy XIV, which will improve the gameplay feel of this great RPG saga on PC," said Sunflex MD Mike Steup.
Pics of the controller are below. Squeenix released the Collector's Edition of the hotly anticipated FFXIV MMO yesterday. The bog standard version's out on 30th September.
Eurogamer's Rob Fahey went hands-on with the game last month and insisted it was "something radically different".

Command and Conquer 3: The Forgotten, a massive mod made by an 80 person team spread across 13 countries, went viral yesterday after its release. What's still more interesting is how quickly Command and Conquer developer Electronic Arts jumped on the project, with Lead Designer Samuel Bass writing, "It’s amazing what people with dedication can do," and highlighting the new faction, full campaign and new Full Motion Videos. After the flop of Command and Conquer 4 last spring left the pioneering RTS series with an uncertain direction, developer Electronic Arts promised to return with a more fan-centric approach. Are huge fan-developed projects with publisher support the future, especially with Blizzard similarly backing mods for its games, or are corporations too reluctant to give up their turf?"

The USA has begun a test of its cyber defences, testing how government departments and organisations including banks and power suppliers would respond in the event of a web-based attack.
Thousands of participants are taking part in the Department of Homeland Security’s Cyber Storm III, a three-day exercise simulating a large-scale cyber attack on the US’s critical infrastructure.
“Securing America's cyber infrastructure requires close coordination with our federal, state, international and private sector partners,†said DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano. “Exercises like Cyber Storm III allow us build upon the significant progress we’ve made in responding to evolving cyber threats.â€
The goal of the test is to determine and strengthen the country’s preparedness for such an attack.
Cyber Storm III involves seven government departments, 11 American states, 60 private sector companies across sectors including banking, water, power and IT, and other countries including the UK.
Earlier this year, Kaspersky Lab CEO Eugene Kaspersky told PCR the current state of cyber attacks was “like a civil war on the internetâ€. “Now the situation is very dangerous. The global economy depends on the internet,†he said.

features•The undead are everywhere creating a dynamic and challenging zombie-killing experience for the player as weapons will be created to kill massive amounts of zombies at one time!
•A new protagonist, Chuck Greene, is just the beginning in a long list of new characters, new survivors and new more vicious psychos that will be introduced to fans in the new world of Dead Rising
•Co-op play is introduced to the Dead Rising universe for the first time as players can invite their friends to partner up with them at any time to take on the zombie massacre- tag-team style! Play with a friend and have even more fun as you lure zombies in using strategic items like a toy helicopter or a firecracker. Once the zombies have gathered, your friend can rain bullets from above or shoot at a strategically-placed gas tank to create a deadly explosion that will take out masses of the enemy. Killing zombies with a friend is always more fun!
•Allows 4 players to compete in a gladiator type show that pits zombies against a group of players in the ultimate Vs. multiplayer blood bath
•Players can combine two everyday items using duct tape to create the ultimate zombie killing creations such as the Portamower and Paddlesaw. Unlocking combo cards along the way will give players the advantage as the helpful cards will show you what items are best for combining. The more zombies you destroy using your creative combo’s, the more Prestige Points you can earn which levels up Chuck along the way
descriptionDead Rising 2 will deliver more of the signature gameplay that the series is known for plus a number of new features.
Players who might need some help or simply want to share the zombie bashing fun with a friend will now be able to play in online 2-player co-op. Simply use the in-game transceiver to call for assistance at any time and once your partner has accepted, they will arrive by your side for double the action.
With hundreds of zombies on screen at any one time, the original Dead Rising forced gamers to take everyday objects they found in the Mall and use them as weapons. But now, in Dead Rising 2 with thousands of zombies filling every square inch of Fortune City, Chuck is going to need to be even more resourceful and inventive by creating combination weapons to save the day. Players will be able to take two objects, a roll of tape and with a little inventiveness create an advanced zombie-killing combo weapon - a piece of wood and a lawnmower become Portamower, the handheld mower that cuts zombies down to size in an instant; while a garden rake and car battery combine to create an electrified zombie prod. The more combo weapons a player uses, the more Prestige Points (PPs) they will gain along the way in order to level up Chuck.

Hello folks! Today, September 28th 2010 marks a big day for DXX-Rebirth.
Not only is it the 5th birthday of the project, it’s also the day of the release of v0.56 which was in the works for 20 months! Last but not least you surely have noticed that the website has changed as well. I hope you like it.
But first things first.
It’s the fifth anniversary for DXX-Rebirth. While it was only a small hobby for me in the beginning and for almost two years I rarely even worked on it, it somehow survived – growing. I never expected that, but I am very proud of it as well. I admit I always work very slowly (20 months for one release… gosh) and my lunch break times surely will some day crush the borders of the space-time continuum, creating a paradox which will swallow the whole universe (or at least this galaxy).
But you trustful players out there are my biggest motivation besides my love for the games in general. This is why I invested a lot of work into this v0.56 release.
So here is what you all have been waiting for – the most important changes of this release:
Totally rewritten UDP code for Multiplayer – including LAN Netlist, Packet-loss prevention and many improvements
All game parts now are window elements (you should not notice this but it’s a huge code improvement)
Improved Music playback compatibility. Missions can now have their own descent.sng, using HMP, MID, MP3, OGG and AIF
Extended Jukebox-feature to play your own music
D1X-Rebirth now supports D1 Shareware, Destination Saturn, 1.0/1.4/1.5 game content
D2X-Rebirth fully supports D2 Demo, Destination Quartzon, 1.0/1.2 game content
Improved demo recording. Views will always be correct in newly recorded demos, no matter how you jump through the demo. Descent 1 will record open/blown doors correctly when demo starts (all backwards compatible)
Bug in Joystick reading fixed. Game should now support more Joysticks, buttons and axes than you can ever operate in your state of evolution.
INI/command-line option added to use CAPSLOCK and NUMLOCK as normal keys
FPS-based damage/screen-shaking of Fusion cannon fixed
Old homing projectiles have been restored and now are FPS-independent
Code has been improved so it should now compile on way more *NIX-like operating systems
The game can optionally be compiled with/without IPX and/or UDP support
Movies are now always displayed in correct aspect ratio
The game will automatically detect supported resolutions of your system configurations and offer them in RESOLUTIONS menu
Ability to dynamically load AddOn packs
Tons of fixes and other improvements
