It's hard to believe that Windows is 30 years old this year. Originally a graphic shell that sat on MS-DOS, Windows has blossomed over the years to be the visually rich experience it is today. That's not to say it hasn't encountered a few pitfalls along the way -- Windows ME, anyone? -- but despite weathering rivals from the likes of Apple, Microsoft's pride and joy is still the most widely used personal computer operating system on the planet. In the gallery here, we take a look back at Windows through the ages. Be sure to keep an eye out for a few cameos from Jennifer Aniston, Jerry Seinfeld and, of course, Steve Ballmer.

If you're one of the millions of people who've already upgraded to Windows 10, you've probably noticed that the OS changed your default apps. Your main browser, for instance, suddenly became Microsoft Edge after the upgrade -- something Mozilla finds "disturbing," especially since the platform actually made it trickier to switch back to Chrome, Firefox or any other browser. In anopen letter to Microsoft head honcho Satya Nadella, Mozilla's CEO Chris Beard revealed that the non-profit got in touch with the Windows 10 team when it got wind of the change, but that "didn't result in any meaningful progress."

Microsoft's Yusuf Mehdi is checking in with a Windows 10 status update, revealing that the OS is already on some 14 million devices. He noted that not everyone who reserved an upgrade has gotten it yet, but says the rollout will continue in phases over the next few weeks. While whether or not you can upgrade to Windows 10 may still be in question, we have information to help decide if you should with our FAQ and review. Of course, if you're one of the millions already in the door, you can just let us know how the new experience is working so far.

In 18 days, Internet Explorer will turn 20 years old. But rather than celebratingwith a new version, as it did for birthday number 15, Microsoft will be shoving IE away into an obscure folder with other legacy applications -- you know, like Paint. Though the browser will live on, mostly for the sake of enterprise users, it will only receive security patches going forward (read: no new features or design changes). Just as important, it will no longer be the default browser in Windows. That honor now goes to Edge, a cleaner, leaner browser that makes its debut on Win 10. Microsoft hopes that with the name change, fresh design, smarter features and improved performance, Edge will be enough to convince people to set aside whatever negative impressions they may have had of Internet Explorer.

"Hey Cortana, give me https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XWX4GUYGQXQ"]a into Windows 10 -- feels like a potent mashup of Google Now's worldliness and Siri's charm. Scheduling reminders? Check. Opening apps? Done. Proffering weather forecasts? You get where I'm going with this. I was almost surprised that she (sorry, "it") didn't humor my lousy attempt at a joke because Microsoft agonized over how to give Cortana a personality, to make it feel like more than just a talented, algorithmic guesser in the cloud. I've spent the last week of my life talking to Cortana, asking it harebrained questions along with proper requests, and you know what? The company succeeded, mostly.

Now that Microsoft's voice-guided Cortana assistant is up and running inWindows 10, you might be eager to trigger it without leaving the "hey Cortana" feature on (which might sap battery life) or staying within reach of your computer. If so, Satechi might just come to your aid. It's releasing aBluetooth Cortana button that will trigger the Halo-inspired helper on Windows PCs and phones from a distance. You can use it to more quickly ask about the weather from across the room, for instance, or leave your phone in your car's cupholder when you start a call. At $23, it won't be the cheapest single-purpose peripheral when it ships later in August. However, that purchase might pay off if you'd rather not get that chatty with your devices.

Rocket League continues to dominate Steam's best sellers list heading into August.
The title outsold Ark: Survival Evolved and Grand Theft Auto V again for the top spot on Valve's chart. The trio have been rooted in their respective top three spots since Rocket League's arrival early last month.
Counter-Strike: Global Offensive – Valve's own chart-topper – finished fourth, while a discount promotion had Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor right behind it to round out the top five.
More general movement can be found on the second half of the top ten, with Garry's Mod and Civilization V both climbing back onto chart. Here's the full list:
- Rocket League
- Ark: Survival Evolved
- Grand Theft Auto V
- Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
- Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor Game of the Year Edition
- Garry's Mod
- Civilization V: Complete Edition
- Final Fantasy Type-0 HD
- The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited

Having only arrived last week, Windows 10 is already on the brink of overtaking the most recent version of Apple’s OSX among Steam users.
The latest Steam Hardware Survey for July shows that Windows 10 is currently used by 2.3 per cent of those who agreed to take part (which by and large is an automated process). Of that number, 2.21 per cent used the 64-bit version of the software and 0.9 per cent the 32-bit version.
This compares to a total of 2.32 per cent of participants who use the latest version of OSX, 10.10. The entire OSX userbase accounts for a total of just 3.23 per cent, meaning Windows 10 is sure to overtake it in the August results.
Linux, meanwhile, languishes behind with just 0.89 per cent.
Windows’ overall share stands at 95.79 per cent. Windows 7 64-bit remains the most popular individual OS with 44.91 per cent.
Nvidia remains the boss of the GPU rankings, claiming 52.47 per cent of the Steam market compared to AMD’s 27.34 per cent. Intel dominates the CPU charts with 75.3 per cent share.
It was announced yesterday that Windows 10 has already been installed by some 14m users worldwide.

Intel's professional-grade Xeon processors are no longer confined to fancy workstations or quiet data centers. The chip designer has unveiled its first-ever Xeon processor family for laptops, the E3-1500M v5. The Skylake-based part is meant to deliver the kind of heavy lifting that you'd want as a pro (such as rendering 3D models or crunching big data sets) while giving you a laptop that's still thin and light enough to carry around. It has Xeon mainstays like error-correcting memory and remote management, but it also rolls in support for brand new features that any self-respecting techie would like, such as the new Thunderbolt 3 connector. If you want, you can drive dual 4K displays, USB-C devices and more from a single port.

It's no secret -- even with its fast start, Microsoft needs more apps on Windows 10, across PCs, tablets and phones. Many of the most popular ones are already built for Android, iOS or even older versions of Windows, but supporting another platform can be tricky. To solve that problem, in April Microsoft announced "Windows Bridge" tools to make it easy for those developers to reuse already written code in new Windows apps. Now it's ready to live up to that promise, and is releasing an early look at the bridge for iOS today. More importantly, it's even opening up the source code (Github) for the Bridge tool itself so the people who will use it can help make it better. If you'd rather use apps than make them, then this doesn't necessarily mean you'll see ported over iPad or Android apps simply running on your PC, just that developers won't have to change so much of the stuff in the background to make them work.

Yesterday, someone noticed that an ad from a Russian news site was exploiting a serious vulnerability in the Firefox browser. According to a Mozilla security post, the attacker was able to bypass the browser's "origin policy" (its front line of security), inject a malicious javascript script and download sensitive local files to a server in the Ukraine. Mozilla said the attack was "surprisingly developer-focused for an exploit launched a general audience news site," because it hunted browser and FTP configuration files. It added that the "exploit leaves no trace that it has run on the local machine."

The Steam Machine invasion is happening this fall. But while these computers are said to be more powerful than traditional consoles, such as the Xbox One or PlayStation 4, none of them are exactly portable. , however, is. Formerly known as Steamboy, the handheld system runs Valve's SteamOS and features a 5-inch, 720p screen, 32GB of onboard storage (plus an SD card slot), 4GB RAM, HDMI-out and configurable gamepads. In terms of connectivity, you'll find Bluetooth, WiFi and, on the Pro model, 4G for true on-the-go gaming. Smach Zero is also promising access to over 1,000 Steam games at launch, but we'll have to wait and see if that turns out to be true. According to the manufacturer, it will be available during Q4 of 2016 starting at $299. If you'd like to pre-order it, you can do so on November 10th -- the same day as other Steam Machines are launching.

Firefox has hit a new landmark today with the release of version 40. The biggest change is improved Windows 10 compatibility, though previous versions of Firefox certainly work fine with Microsoft's new OS. Instead, the changes are mostly aesthetic to bring the browser in line with Windows 10's design and make it easier to use on a touchscreen. For instance, the "close" buttons on tabs are now bigger so that they're easier to use on a touchscreen, and the address bar has bigger fonts. It also has revised tabstrips and toolbars plus a custom Windows 10 theme.

There are plenty of workstation laptops that claim to deliver on the promise of heavy-duty computing on the road, but they're not usually that much different on the inside than a garden variety portable. You can't say that about Lenovo's monster new ThinkPad P50 and P70 systems, though. The two not only offer things you'd expect in this class, such as color-accurate 4K displays and pro NVIDIA Quadro graphics, but Intel's first-ever mobile Xeon processors(specifically, the E3-1500M) -- you won't have to settle for an ordinary Core i-series chip here. If you need to crunch 3D models or video when you're out of the office, one of these rigs may be your best bet. That CPU upgrade also brings the kind of perks normally limited to desktops, including support for a whopping 64GB of memory and Thunderbolt 3 ports that can handle dual 4K displays.

Microsoft is more than a little proud that a version of Windows 10 runs on tiny, embedded PCs -- proud enough that it's willing to make clever devices to show this off. The folks in Redmond have built a robotic air hockey table whose virtual player is powered by a diminutive MinnowBoard Max running Windows 10 IoT Core. It's simple (it largely depends on an overhead camera to track the puck), but it's good enough to keep up with at least some shots, as you'll see in the video below. You aren't about to buy this table in a store -- it'd need to keep up with a ruthless human rival, for starters -- but it's proof that modern Windows can find its way into some very unusual places.

Microsoft revealed that Windows 10 has already reached 14 million devices since its launch, but some customers may be losing data during the migration, which Acronis hopes to help with.
Here the firm lists how customers can upgrade safely without losing any data:
1) Plan the upgrade – If there are multiple PCs in a household, you should not rush into installing Windows 10 on all machines right away. You should select one computer and upgrade it to Windows 10. This will help in learning what to do and what to avoid, and will make the upgrade process easier for other PCs.
2) Make sure the PC is suitable for the upgrade – With a recently purchased PC that runs an older version of Windows, you can most likely keep the machine and upgrade it to Windows 10. However, if the PC is over three-years-old, then you should consider replacing it with a newer machine that can run Windows 10 more easily. New OSs running on old machines can slow things down significantly. At some point, it will be running more advanced applications that require more computing power. When that happens, the hardware needs to be upgraded anyway. You should plan ahead so the PC can run the more advanced applications, thus avoiding the need to upgrade twice.
3) Back up the old PC - Before doing an upgrade to Windows 10, all the information and applications on the original PC need to be backed up. Upgrading without backing up all of the files and the system as a whole can lead to data loss. Even Microsoft states ‘unexpected PC crashes could damage or even delete your files, so you should back up everything’ before you upgrade. Windows 10 is not a simple Windows update, but rather a clean rollout of a new system and the install process will wipe out many folders containing important files or data.
4) Use disk imaging technology for backup, not just file copy – Windows, even XP, is a complex OS and some data lives outside of files. There is multiple data that has not been saved in a file or folder, like passwords, preferences, and everything that exists on the computer in applications. For this reason, it is useful to have a backup solution with disk imaging technology that simultaneously backs up the entire system while also backing up individual files. If you opt for just a file backup solution, you will be unable to restore system configurations or application data on the new OS.
5) Back up everything – Over time, you may have filed documents into desktop folders, temporary files, or even the Recycle Bin. Even these forgotten folders have to be backed up, as well as any hidden partitions. Such partitions, as found on Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and IBM machines, allow to restore the computer back to its original state. So it is extremely important to back it up, too.
6) Follow the 3-2-1 backup rule —The 3-2-1 backup rule recommends that you create three copies of the data, store the copies on at least two different storage media, and to save one of these copies offsite.
7) Save older backups after the upgrade – Once switching over to Windows 10, you should still keep older backups of data. They may need them again if something goes wrong and they decide to go back to the older version.

One of the more interesting aspects of Microsoft's Windows 10 push is their desire to see it running on hobbyist hardware platforms. Today theyreleased Windows 10 IoT Core for the Raspberry Pi 2 and the MinnowBoard Max. They say, "Windows 10 IoT Core is a new edition for Windows targeted towards small, embedded devices that may or may not have screens. For devices with screens, Windows 10 IoT Core does not have a Windows shell experience; instead you can write a Universal Windows app that is the interface and "personality" for your device." Microsoft has posted a list of release notes for this version, calling out improved support for Python and Node.js, significantly improved GPIO performance, and more electronics support for breakout boards. Under a heading cheekily named 'Developers, Developer, Developers,' they lay out their plan for language support and provide a code sample.

Since the rise of 3D graphics cards, the inexorable trend in PC gaming has been around getting bigger, better and faster. That led to a culture of PC gamers obsessing over frame rates and doing whatever it took to push their hardware as much as possible. But now that even relatively affordable graphics cards can hit a silky smooth 60 fps at 1080p, there's only one big mountain left to climb: 4K gaming. And that's exactly what a powerhouse card like AMD's new Radeon R9 Fury X ($650) is poised to tackle. The only problem? 4K gaming still isn't worth your time and money.

Hard drives are as ubiquitous as the desktops or they're made for. But as technology evolves, manufacturers continue to make these faster and smaller than ever before. Case in point: Samsung, which has developed the world largest hard drive, packing 16TB of storage in a 2.5-inch format. While the PM1633a (as it's currently named) could be considered an SSD, since there aren't any moving parts inside, there's no doubt it is a good ol' hard drive at its core. The PM1633a, revealed during the Flash Memory Summit in California, is based on Samsung's NAND flash chips -- similar to what you'd find on the its consumer solid-state drives. There's no word on pricing or availability at the moment, but it is more than likely that the PM1633a will end being used for enterprise servers.
Hey, we can dream, right?

As more memory vendors try to compete to create the largest SSD drive, Samsung seems to be leading the way.
The firm has showcased its new 2.5-inch 16TB SSD drive, the PM1633a at the Flash Memory Summit in California this week, which is reportedly one of the largest SSDs in the world.
Before Samsung unveiled this SSD, some of the largest drives on the market reached capacities of up to 8TB and 10TB from the likes of Seagate and Western Digital.
But these new devices don’t come cheap, as Ars Technica revealed that Samsung will be selling the first units of the new 16TB SSD for an eye-watering $5,000 (£3,200), with prices expected to reach $7,000 (£4,481) for top versions.
Samsung has revealed that the new drives have been designed specifically for businesses and will most likely be used in servers.
The drive comes with 256Gbit NAND flash dies, which is twice the capacity of Samsung’s 128Gbit NAND flash dies.
To create this NAND, the firm has stuffed 48 layers of 3-bits-per-cell 3D V-NAND into a single die, which is up from 24 layers in 2013 and 36 layers in 2014.
Meanwhile, the firm has also launched two new smartphones, including the Galaxy S6 Edge+ and the Galaxy Note 5.
Both phones boast a 5.7-inch display and will go on sale later this year.

An anonymous reader writes with this Venturebeat story about how Windows 10 is different from previous versions because of the way it was designed, including 15 public preview builds, and how much work is still being done.Windows 10 for PCs arrived two weeks ago. Thankfully, we don't need to wait years to say this will be a Microsoft operating system release like no other. The most obvious clue is not the fact that Windows 10 was installed on more than 14 million devices in 24 hours, that you can get it for cheap or upgrade to it for free, nor even that it ships with a digital assistant and a proper browser. No, the big deal here is that Microsoft is turning its OS into a service, and that means as you read these words, it's still being built. For the next few years, we'll be getting not just Windows 10 updates and patches, but new improvments and features. This is possible because Microsoft built this version very differently from all its previous releases

Windows is transitioning from something that you buy once every few years to a service that's updated on a regular basis. Windows 10 has only been out for a few weeks but already Microsoft's got the follow-up ready for selected users to test. If you're a member of the Windows Insider program, you can now get a look at Preview Build 10525 which'll land on your desktop automatically via Windows Update. The two most notable tweaks enable to you tweak the color of the taskbar as well as greatly improved memory management. On the downside, video playback and internet sharing are broken for now, so if you're interested in updating, just remember that you do so at your own risk.

When Sony announced that it was spinning off its PC business, many mourned the passing of the premium -- but not quite best-selling -- VAIO series. The company was reborn in Japan, focusing on far less PC models (only two at the start), and a Made In Japan ethic that stretched from design to manufacturing. Now the company says it plans to start selling its newest machines outside of its homeland. VAIO's Z Canvas PC will be available both online and some Microsoft stores across the US starting this October. Prices will start at $2,200, depending on specification options. In an interview with the WSJ, the new CEO Yoshimi Ota added that the company plans to sell a slimmer laptop with cellular capability-- a feature that occasionally appears in niche laptop models.

Microsoft has issued a critical update to patch up an Internet Explorer hole that can give hackers access to your system. Hackers could create websites capable of exploiting the zero-day vulnerability -- discovered by Google researcher Clement Lecigne -- and get you to click on the URL via email or instant messenger. They will then get the same user rights you have, making the flaw more dangerous if you have administrative access or if you're handling a server or a workstation. With admin powers, intruders can remotely install applications and steal your data.

Do you recall the bad old days of PC games in the mid-2000s, when titles were loaded with copy protection that was not only a hassle, but horribly insecure? Well, Microsoft does -- and that could be a problem if you're trying to run some of those vintage games on Windows 10. The company notes that games which depend on some versions of SafeDisc and Securom DRM (digital rights management) aren't allowed to run on Windows 10 at all. That could mean that your dusty copy of Grand Theft Auto III, Battlefield 1942 or The Sims won't load. As Microsoft's Boris Schneider-Johne says, their DRM intrudes so deeply into your system that they introduce a "possible loophole for computer viruses." Sure enough, at least one of the concerns about burdensome copy protection proved true -- it was more of a nuisance to honest gamers than to pirates.

Microsoft is testing a new app called NewsCast, which makes a playlist of news story summaries and reads them to you, according to Neowin. The publication came across a page on the Microsoft Azure Web Sites domain that had the app for download. In it, the company mentioned that the program was created by the Bing team and is meant to make commutes more productive, since you can listen to playlist even while driving. Unfortunately, the download's no longer available, but Neowin managed to take some screenshots that you can see below the fold.

Three weeks have passed since Windows 10 became available for download and, judging by the user reviews left on our product page, it's been one hell of a start. While many users seemed to agree with our positive assessment, a few of you inundated us with tales of woe, ranging from installation issues to slowdowns to crashing apps. We've gathered together some of the best reader reviews below to find out if Windows 10 really is a "must have" upgrade now, or if some of you might be better off waiting for a few of the kinks to be ironed out.

Agreeing to Windows 10’s End User Licence Agreement gives the software the right to automatically disable pirated games from a user’s computer or phone.
GameSpot picked up on an Alphr report that noticed the following amendment to section 7b of the Windows 10 EULA:
“[Microsoft] may automatically check your version of the software and download software update or configuration changes, including those that prevent you from accessing the Services, playing counterfeit games, or using unauthorised hardware peripheral devices.â€
The implication is that using a Windows 10 PC or Windows phone grants Microsoft the right to scan systems for pirated games or dodgy hardware and disable them without notice.
How “counterfeit games†or “unauthorised hardware†are determined is unclear. Could this stretch as far as unlicensed game controllers? Could it also have implications for copied versions of non-games software such as Adobe or Office products?
Also of importance is the method through which a game is identified as being unofficial.

Rocket League remains ahead of the pack on Steam’s latest weekly top ten sellers, while its DLC release Supersonic Fury made its chart debut in eighth.
Like clockwork, Ark: Survival Evolved and Grand Theft Auto V finished behind the popular ‘cars playing soccer’ affair in the runner-up and third spots. The same could be said about Counter-Strike: Global Offensive’s weekly reservation of fourth place.
Pre-orders for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain have the title making the list for the second week in a row, though it dropped three spots to seventh.
Here’s the full list:
- Rocket League
- Ark: Survival Evolved
- Grand Theft Auto V
- Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
- H1Z1
- Left 4 Dead 2
- Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
- Rocket League - Supersonic Fury DLC Pack
- The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Super-rigs with 16GB or even 32GB of RAM enjoy little gaming benefit over those with a gentle 4GB.
That’s according to Techspot, which took on the challenge of testing whether the ever increasing amount of RAM being installed in modern PCs is necessary for those wanting to indulge in high-end PC gaming.
The site used a hefty machine to test the presumption, housing a 4.0GHz Intel Core i7-6700K and Nvidia GeForce GTX 980. It tested a range of titles while at the same time running Chrome with a whopping 65 open tabs.
Despite this, Grand Theft Auto V dropped just one frame per second when dropping from 8GB to 4GB (56fps vs 55fps). 16GB offered no performance benefit at all. There were also minimal single-digit differences when running Batman: Arkham Knight while the results were the same across the board with F1 2015.
Note that generally 8GB is still regarded as the optimum amount of RAM for those who use their PCs for a range of tasks.
The upward trend in RAM usage among PC enthusiasts is nothing new, but it has certainly intensified in the post PS4 and Xbox One era where maxing out the performance of new titles is becoming close to impossible on even the most expensive PCs.

The declining tablet market in Western Europe has finally started to stabilise, according to analyst IDC.
Total tablet shipments contracted annually by 1.2 per cent in Q2 2015, reaching 7.5 million units, which is one of the smallest declines since the downturn started at the beginning of 2014.
The dip was a result of weak demand for consumer tablets and an increase in interest for two-in-one devices. The drop in tablet shipments stabilised to 4.4 per cent, while growth for two-in-ones reached 71 per cent.
Daniel Goncalves, research analyst for personal computing at IDC, said: “The interest in two-in-ones that we observed in previous quarters is clearly materialising into corporate deployments and consumer purchases, especially among professionals and students.â€
Apple and Samsung dominated the tablet marketplace in Europe according to IDC, while smartphone vendors including Alcatel and Huawei have also seen a steady growth.
But does this mean that tablet sales are finally starting to recover? Within the commercial market, tablets have increased by 50 per cent compared to the same quarter a year ago, with slate tablets taking the top spot as the preferred device for specific vertical functions.
Chrystelle Labesque, research manager for personal computing at IDC, added: “The vendor landscape in the tablet market remains very broad and while price and volume pressures were at first negatively impacting smaller players, some of them now seem to have established a better position, capturing specific local demands or segment needs at the expense of more dominant players.
“Apple and Samsung are both focusing a lot of attention on the commercial segment, and are capturing part of this increasing opportunity, while traditional PC manufacturers are also extending their solutions offer to this segment.â€

Today Mozilla announced some big changes to its extension support. Their new addon API, WebExtensions, is mostly compatible with the extension model used by Chrome and Opera. In short, this means we'll soon see cross-platform browser extensions. They say, "For some time we've heard from add-on developers that our APIs could be better documented and easier to use. In addition, we've noticed that many Firefox add-on developers also maintain a Chrome, Safari, or Opera extension with similar functionality. We would like add-on development to be more like Web development: the same code should run in multiple browsers according to behavior set by standards, with comprehensive documentation available from multiple vendors."

Now that Windows 10 is finally out there many people are looking for the best laptop with the power to make the new OS shine. The sweet spot appears to be in $900-$1500 machines from Dell, Asus and HP. But Apple, the company that has been fighting Windows for ever, has other options for Windows 10: the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air. According to InformationWeek there are many reasons to consider purchasing a MacBook as the next Windows machine, including design, reliability, performance, battery life, display quality and better keyboard. Also MacBooks have a higher resell value, retaining up to 50% of their price after five years.

Want to make all your 5 year old son’s friends jealous? What if he told them he could make REAL volcanoes in his sandbox? Will this be the future of sandboxes, digitally enhanced with augmented reality?
It’s not actually that hard to set up! The system consists of a good computer running Linux, a Kinect, a projector, a sandbox, and sand. And that’s it! The University of California (UC Davis) has setup a few of these systems now to teach children about geography, which is a really cool demonstration of both 3D scanning and projection mapping. As you can see in the animated gif above, the Kinect can track the topography of the sand, and then project its “reality†onto it. In this case, a mini volcano.

Some 15 years ago, the retro arcade craze was starting to gain serious traction, and pictures of modified arcade cabinets running MAME started to appear. Eager to do something similar, I managed to get my hands on a relatively cheap Neo-Geo cabinet and modified it to run MAME as well as a bunch of home consoles. The controls were all genuine Happ controls running off stripped Sidewinder controllers, and the monitor was an actual arcade monitor, running off a video card that was capable of outputting signal at 15kHz. Time passed, things got boring, and I ended up selling the cabinet – with a subsequent case of seller’s remorse.15 years later, shortly after I ported FinalBurn Alpha to the Raspberry Pi, I started to consider building another cabinet. The same power that was then in a Pentium III now fits nicely in a Raspberry Pi, and the hobbyist electronics market is now in a state that hasn’t been seen since the 1980’s.

Windows 10 is facing some fierce resistance from a few of the most dedicated torrenting communities. As TorrentFreak reports, the private torrent tracker iTS has banned its members from using the operating system over what it considers to be "terrible" new anti-privacy policies. These stem largely from anew Microsoft services agreement which covers select Windows 10 apps and services such as Cortana, Skype and Xbox Live: "We may automatically check your version of the software and download software updates or configuration changes, including those that prevent you from accessing the Services, playing counterfeit games, or using unauthorized hardware peripheral devices."

Windows 10's facial recognition is supposed to make it easy to sign into your PC while maintaining security, but just how good is it? Good enough that even your doppelganger might not get in, apparently. The Australian has conducted an informal test where it tried to fool Windows using sets of identical twins, and the software wasn't tricked once -- it had a problem logging in both twins in one instance, but it otherwise allowed only those individuals that had set up recognition in the first place. That was true even when the 'evil' twins attempted to spoof the camera by adjusting their hair or removing their glasses.

Rocket League fell from the top spot of Steam's weekly best sellers chart for the first time since its launch, as Ark: Survival Evolved was able to retake peak position thanks to a discount offer.
Promotions meaningfully shook up the top five for the first time in nearly two months. Ark and Counter-Strike took advantage of their sales to finish one and two, respectively.
Rocket League dropped to third, pushing Grand Theft Auto V down one spot from its accustomed position over the last couple months, while new Left 4 Dead-themed content and a discount promotion for Zombie Army Trilogy had the game climbing up to round out the top five.
Former chart regular Payday 2 also had a good week, with its standard and GOTY editions both checking in on the top ten. From the full list:
- Ark: Survival Evolved
- Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
- Rocket League
- Grand Theft Auto V
- Zombie Army Trilogy
- Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
- H1Z1
- Payday 2
- Payday 2: GOTY Edition
- Planetary Annihilation: Titans

Nvidia launched a slightly cheaper graphics card last week dubbed the Nvidia GeForce GTX 950.
The younger brother to the GTX 960, which was unveiled earlier this year, is priced at just over £100, a substantial price drop compared to the 960’s £159.99 price tag.
This news first broke from Japanese tech site Hermitage Akihabara, which revealed that the card will launch on August 20th.
Before the release of the new GPU, packaging shots were leaked online depicting the ASUS Strix GTX 950 and Gigabyte and Zotac versions.
The card comes with 640 CUDA cores, DDR3 or GDDR5 memory and will run at 1,000 or 2,500 MHz.
Let's just hope the new cards aren't hit by stock shortages. Intel Skylake and AMD cards have apparently been hit by stock shortages of late, while last year Nvidia's GTX 980 and 970 GPUs faced issues with shortages due to strong demand.
The news comes as overall worldwide GPU shipments dropped by 18.8 per cent year-on-year in Q2 2015, according to Jon Peddie Research (JPR)
Desktop graphics are also down by 21.7 per cent and notebook graphics have seen a decline of 16.9 per cent.
In addition, the overall PC market has decreased by 10.4 per cent year-on-year, and the attach rate for GPUs, including integrated and discrete GPUs to PCs for the qaurter was down by 4.15 per cent, so says JPR.
The research also found that Nvidia’s overall PC graphics shipment decreased by 16.2 per cent, while Intel and AMD saw a decline of 7.4 per cent and 25.8 per cent respectively.
Nvidia’s desktop discrete shipments were down by 12 per cent from the last quarter, and the firm’s notebook discrete shipments declined by 21.6 per cent.

Tablets are becoming more useful for getting real work done. Looking to further bridge the gap between slate and laptop, Microsoft Applied Sciencesbuilt a prototype device it calls the DisplayCover: a keyboard cover that houses an e-ink touchscreen display. The 1,280 x 305 resolution panel not only provides access to app shortcuts, but it can also handle touch gestures for navigation and accept stylus input. The stylus feature seems to make things like signing documents and scribbling notes a breeze, based on the demo video. In the case of an app like Photoshop where you need constant access to tool palettes, those items can be parked at the top of the keyboard so they don't take up valuable space on the tablet's display (in this case a Surface).

If you're still wondering why Microsoft made Windows 10 free, just consider the latest stats: It's now on 75 million computers one month after its big launch, Windows corporate VP Yusuf Mehdi tweeted today. In comparison, it took six months for Microsoft to sell 100 million Windows 8 licenses, a more nebulous stat that didn't necessarily include actual installs. None of this is a surprise though: We've written extensively about Microsoft's desire to build a long-lasting Windows platform, and that starts with prioritizing the number of people running Windows 10 rather than mere revenues. Mehdi also divulged some other intriguing tidbits: More than "90,000 unique PC or tablet models" have upgraded to Windows 10; over 122 years of gameplay have been streaming to Windows 10 PCs from Xbox One consoles; and, perhaps most intriguingly, the Windows 10 store "has seen 6x more app downloads "per device than Windows 8."

Screenshots come in handy when offering feedback and comments on any number of things. To lend a hand with that process, Microsoft has a new app for Windows that's up to the task. The software is called Snip, and in addition to capturing parts of your screen to share among your friends and colleagues, the app also lets you mark up the snaps. With both voice notes and stylus scribbles, Snip gives you two options for getting that point across. When you're done, you can paste the image into another app (they're copied to the clipboard by default), distribute it as a web link or save it to your device as a video (MP4). When you lend your voice to the captures, the app automatically turns them into videos. And yes, they can be embedded on the web should the need arise. If you're looking to give it a go, the app is available in beta form now from the source link below.

To the untrained eye, LG's new Bluetooth keyboard looks like a (very long) mobile battery, but that's because it's all bundled up. Unfurl the Rolly and you'll get a "full-size" keyboard that automatically switches on and connects to your nearest (LG?) tablet. There's a stand built into the top of the device, which will hold tablets up to ten inches big. The keys are made of solid plastic (not the flat, squishy kind), which LG hopes will offer a typing experience close to what you're used to on your PC. The keyboard is just the start: the company says it plans to offer even more "input devices" in the next few months. The Rolly will launch this September in the US first, rolling out to the rest of the world soon after. (You're welcome.)

PC sales are expected to shrink by 8.7 per cent in 2015 and will not stabilise until 2017, so says analyst IDC.
The latest forecast shows that shipments will continue to decline through 2016, which will make five years of declining shipments.
However, IDC believes that growth should resume in 2017, which will be led by the commercial market.
Consumer volume continues a small decline through the end of the forecast in 2019, too.
Although IDC had expected the second quarter of 2015 to be a transition period, as vendors prepare for Windows 10 systems in the second half of the year, final results shrank even more than expected due to a "stubbornly large" inventory of notebooks from prior quarters.
IDC also said there were constraints posed by the decline of major currencies relative to the US dollar.
According to IDC, economic issues, free upgrades to Windows 10 and various channels that are reluctant to take on new stock also make the prospect of growth unlikely during 2016.
"Perhaps as a further sign of a broader pullback, mobile devices can no longer be the sole culprit for PCs demise," said IDC in a statement.
The combined volume of PCs, tablets, and smartphones is expected to grow only by single digits from 2015 through to 2019 as saturation and 'good enough computing' sentiments spread even into tablets, which are expected to see a further volume decline in 2015.
Jay Chou, senior research analyst, worldwide PC tracker at IDC, said: “Although the shortcomings of the PC business are obvious, a silver lining is that the industry has continued to refine the more mobile aspects of personal computers – contributing to higher growth in convertible and ultraslim notebooks.
"The de-emphasis of touch on Windows 10 also paves the way for a more familiar experience and continuing unit growth on large-screen systems, particularly all-in-one PCs."
A slight recovery is expected during 2017, plus in emerging regions PC purchases are also expected to increase.
This news comes after IDC reported that the declining tablet market in Western Europe has finally started to stabilise.
Total tablet shipments contracted annually by 1.2 per cent in Q2 2015, reaching 7.5 million units.

AMD today added a third card to its new Fury line that's arguably the most intriguing of the bunch, the Radeon R9 Nano. True to its name, the Nano is a very compact card, though don't be fooled by its diminutive stature. Lurking inside this 6-inch graphics card is a Fiji GPU core built on a 28nm manufacturing process paired with 4GB of High Bandwidth Memory (HBM). It's a full 1.5 inches shorter than the standard Fury X, and unlike its liquid cooled sibling, there's no radiator and fan assembly to mount. The Fury Nano sports 64 compute units with 64 stream processors each for a total of 4,096 stream processors, just like Fury X. It also has an engine clock of up to 1,000MHz and pushes 8.19 TFLOPs of compute performance. That's within striking distance of the Fury X, which features a 1,050MHz engine clock at 8.6 TFLOPs.

Amid the privacy concerns and arguably invasive nature of Microsoft's Windows 10 regarding user information, it's no surprise that details on how to minimize leaks as much as possible are often requested by users who have recently made the jump to the new operating system. If you are using Windows 10, or plan to upgrade soon, it's worth bearing in mind a number of privacy-related options that are available, even during the installation/upgrade. If you are already running the OS and forgot to turn them off during installation (or didn't even see them), they can be accessed via the Settings menu on the start menu, and then selecting Privacy from the pop-up menu. Among these menus are a plethora of options regarding what data can be gathered about you. It's worth noting, however, that changing any of these options may disable various OS related services, namely Cortana, as Microsoft's digital assistant has it tendrils buried deep.

Back in June, Google shared the good news that the Chrome browser would soon be smart enough to "intelligently pause content that aren't central to the webpage" that you're visiting. It's a welcome change that should help to continue marginalizing the annoyance of Flash. Fortunately, that blessed new feature is ready for prime time. On the Google+ page for the company's AdWords advertising program, Google said that a Chrome update coming on September 1st would make Flash-blocking the default state for users.

Having hinted at a smaller graphics card back in June during E3 in Los Angeles, AMD has unveiled the details of its new six-inch card dubbed the R9 Nano.
AMD revealed in a recent press briefing that the Nano is a niche product for the vendor, which aims to bring high performance to users.
The firm says that the Nano will enable 4K gaming in the living room and will range in price from $199 (£129) to $649 (£422).
The Nano is based on the graphics chip codenamed ‘Fiji’, and is the third 'Fiji'-based product to launch this summer alongside the AMD Radeon R9 Fury and R9 Fury X graphics cards.
The firm unveiled the previous Radeon R9 290X graphics card a few years ago, and the new R9 Nano is around 30 per cent faster than the R9 290X, so says AMD
Victor Camardo, product manager, Radeon graphics at AMD, said: “The R9 Nano operates on 30 per cent less power than the R9 290X, so not only did we make it faster, we made it smaller and we made it cooler. That’s very important especially in something as small as the R9 Nano.â€
AMD has also made various tweaks to the new card to ensure it is kept cool when used, for example in high-performance gaming.
The fins within this card have been placed in a horizontal direction, meaning most of the air leaves out of the back of the card.
“The cooling unit itself is actually a hybrid cooling solution. We have dual key pipe cooling but in addition to that we have a vapour chamber, so you have a key pipe and vapour chamber for the cooling,†added Camardo.
“Although it’s a six-inch design, we’re not using cheap components, we’re actually using high-end premium components.â€
In addition, AMD is maintaining the same display configuration as the Fury and Fury X cards with the R9 Nano, as it boasts three display ports and one HDMI connection port, while the design of the actual card has been changed slightly. Instead of the usual glossy black finish, the Nano sports a matte black coating.
“We wanted to make sure the Nano had a premium look and feel, that someone purchasing this card is going to be happy to show it off, in a box or Lan party or in their home,†explains Camardo.
