If you've yet to lay your hands on a Chromebook or Chromebox, that could change shortly, as the computers may soon find a new life in libraries, hotels, retail stores and even the break room. Today, Google announced an update to its management console for Chrome OS that allows for Managed Public Sessions -- in other words, a kiosk mode. Central to the idea, users will be able to login to the computer without supplying credentials, and their data will be automatically cleared at the end of the session. The setup has plenty of appeal for system administrators, too, as they'll find the ability to set the default web page, block access to specific sites and apps, configure device I/O operation and manage timed logouts. Google has tested Managed Public Sessions with Dillards, The Hyatt in San Francisco and the Multnomah County Library in Oregon. If anything, it's a good reason to keep a keen watch on your surroundings... you might just spot a Chromebook in the wild that's begging for some attention.

Much-loved Half-Life 2: Episode 1 mode 'Minerva' has been released in enhanced form for free via Steam. Minerva is the critically acclaimed work of Adam Foster, who earned himself a job at Valve following his work on the mod in 2006.Minerva "takes you to a remote island under the control of Combine forces," explains the description, for those who haven't played it. "Something is going on here. Your goal is to uncover what that is and destroy it. Oh, yes-- and try to survive.Foster tells Kotaku that the re-released version, free now via Steam, adds "tweaked visuals, bug fixes, better puzzles and all kinds of subtle improvements".Although it's free, you must already own Half Life 2: Episode 1 to play the mod.Download it here.

A new report from Net Applications reveals that Windows 8 is continuing to increase its market share among PCs worldwide.
During April, while every other Windows version declined slightly in market share, Windows 8 edged its way to 3.84 per cent, up from 3.31 per cent the month before.
Unsurprisingly, Windows 7 is still the most popular PC OS in the world with 44.72 per cent of the market.
What is surprising is the fact that XP, an OS that is nearly 12 years old, is still so strong. Microsoft is set to end official support for XP in April 2014, and the OS has not been sold on machines since 2008, yet it is the second most popular OS in the world with 38.31 per cent of the market.
All Windows operating systems continue to dominate over Mac and others, taking 91.78 per cent of the global market share.

Analyst suggests Microsoft could struggle to establish itself in the market.
With over one billion tablets expected to be in use by the end of 2017 - up from 200 million at the start of 2013 - Microsoft could face a significant challenge in becoming a major player in the market, says mobile analyst firm CCS Insight.
The company forecasts that in the period up to 2015, Apple will continue to grow its volume, despite seeing its market share drop on account of stiff competition from Android.
Furthermore, devices from Amazon and Google will also continue to undercut Apple’s dominance, while Android tablets will continue to thrive in the mid-to-low tier in both developed and emerging markets.
CCS Insight sees the biggest uncertainty in the tablet market lying with Microsoft’s ability to significantly penetrate the market, as this will go some way to determining whether or not the market in 2015 will be based on the duopoly of today or whether it will become a three horse race.
Marina Koytcheva, director of forecasting, at CCS Insight, commented: "Winning a solid share in the tablet market is an absolute must for Microsoft. However, it faces significant challenges with Windows 8. The current licence fees for Windows 8 Pro and Windows RT mean it's hard for manufacturers to compete effectively and make a reasonable margin on tablets at the right prices, despite Microsoft's effort to increase marketing support. Furthermore, the availability and quality of apps for Windows 8 are not strong enough."
According to CCS Insight, Microsoft needs to urgently address this "app gap" in order for its tablets to succeed. This is seen as home territory for Microsoft, which knows how to work successfully with developers.
The firm also believes that the optimisation of Microsoft Office for tablets is imperative, and that until this is resolved, Microsoft will remain on the back foot.
CCS Insight forecasts that the global tablet market will reach 419 million units and be worth $95 billion in 2017. Koytcheva explained: "Since June last year, we've seen faster tablet adoption than we had expected in some emerging markets such as China, as the prices fell rapidly. We now expect 181 million tablets to be sold worldwide in 2013, and have uplifted our forecast until 2017."

Although AMD hasn't had much recent success at the higher end of the processor spectrum, it's clear the company is very much interested in attacking the budget realm. Witness its two new lower-tiered FX-series processors: the quad-core FX-4350 and six-core FX-6350 bring noticeable (if modest) improvements over the FX-4300 and FX-6300 chips they effectively replace. Both unlocked CPUs up the base clock speed to 3.9GHz, while the Max Turbo speeds jump to a respective 4.3GHz and 4.2GHz each. The FX-4350 further trumps its ancestor by doubling the Level 3 cache to 8MB, albeit with a higher power draw. More importantly, prices aren't budging much at all in spite of the brisker performance. When the FX-4350 and FX-6350 cost just $122 and $132 each, they're cheap enough that DIY builders shouldn't weep when the bills are due.http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/01/a...50-processors/

As global PC shipments fall, the tablet and mobile device market is growing at a fast pace, opening up a number of different avenues for IT businesses to travel down.
“Fading Mini Notebook shipments have taken a big chunk out of the low- end market while tablets and smartphones continue to divert consumer spending,†said IDC in a recent report.
“PC industry efforts to offer touch capabilities and ultraslim systems have been hampered by traditional barriers of price and component supply, as well as a weak reception for Windows 8.â€
So while desktops and notebook sales may be dwindling, and ultrabooks aren’t selling as well as they should, tablets and smartphones are leading the market.
Distributor KMS believes that this ever-growing popularity for mobile devices is creating an exciting chance for distributors and retailers to move into new areas.
“In some shape or form most people should be involved with tablets, it just depends what their business is set up to do. Whether that’s better served to offer accessories and peripherals, or if it’s offering actual devices. I think this is essential when you consider the sales of tablets against PCs – they have taken over,†commented KMS sales director Steve Bland.
Alex Tatham, Westcoast’s sales and marketing director, agrees with being involved in tablets, and even warns that PCR readers should “ensure they have a comprehensive offeringâ€. But Tatham insists that the distributor’s PC business has actually grown: “Westcoast is not seeing anything like the disaster that IDC has suggested; in fact our PC business has grown.
“Consumers are spending their spare cash on a tablet as opposed to a new desktop but businesses are increasingly upgrading. I can only see this accelerating as Microsoft’s support for Windows XP ends next April and more business adopt Windows 8 as a standard operating system.â€
Marco Della Vedova from etailer Dino PC, is also still seeing demand for desktops, commenting: “In the case of professionals working with power hungry software suites, the need for a powerful desktop workstation is still there, and this is also true for users looking for high performance gaming machines.â€
At the beginning of this year, market analyst Gartner reported that the declining global PC shipments of Q4 2012 were a sign of a structural shift in the PC market.
“Tablets have dramatically changed the device landscape for PCs, not so much by ‘cannibalising’ PC sales, but by causing PC users to shift consumption to tablets rather than replacing older PCs,†said Mikako Kitagawa, principal analyst at Gartner. “We increasingly suspect that most individuals will shift consumption activity to a personal tablet, and perform creative and administrative tasks on a shared PC. We hypothesise that buyers will not replace secondary PCs in the household, instead allowing them to age out and shifting media and internet consumption to a tablet.â€

Google has added a new Managed Public Sessions feature designed to be highly customisable for users without requiring a login.
This ‘kiosk mode’ means Chromebook or Chromebox devices could find their way into libraries, hotels, warehouse floors and retail stores, where both customers and employees can log in to the computer without supplying credentials.
Features include the ability to set the default sites and apps a user sees at login, custom brand the homepage, block sites and apps that shouldn't be accessed, configure device inputs and outputs, and set timed log-out sessions.
For security reasons, public session data is cleared on logout so the next user starts fresh.
Google has been testing out the public sessions with a number of customers already.
“We have many more employees than computers at our retail stores, so being able to share devices is key. With Managed Public Sessions, employees can walk up to any machine and get immediate access to their corporate email and important internal systems. And since Managed Public Sessions wipes all data at logout, it supports our PCI compliance requirements,†said Woody Chin, CIO, Dillard’s.

Microsoft’s second-generation Surface tablets are expected to be unveiled at the company’s Build Developer Conference, reports DigiTimes.
According to sources from the ‘upstream supply chain’, after only achieving sales of 1.5 million units for its first-gen tablets, Microsoft is taking a cautious attitude over promotions for its second-gen models.
The supply chain sources told the publication that they have already shipped components for 1-1.5 million Intel-based units to Microsoft since the end of 2012.
The sources say the new Surface tablets will only feature 7- to 9-inch displays to meet the rising demand for smaller mobile devices. This is in keeping with rumours last month that Microsoft’s next tablet will be a 7-inch Surface, in a bid to compete with tablet market leaders such as Google’s Nexus 7 and Apple’s iPad mini.
Microsoft’s Build Developer Conference is hosted from June 26-28th at the Moscone Center, San Francisco.

In a 15-way graphics card comparison on Linux of both the open and closed-source drivers, it was found that the open-source AMD Linux graphics driver is much faster than the open-source NVIDIA driver on Ubuntu 13.04. The open-source NVIDIA driver is developed entirely by the community via reverse-engineering, but for Linux desktop users, is this enough? The big issue for the open-source 'Nouveau' driver is that it doesn't yet fully support re-clocking the graphics processor so that the hardware can actually run at its rated speeds. With the closed-source AMD Radeon and NVIDIA GeForce results, the drivers were substantially faster than their respective open-source driver. Between NVIDIA and AMD on Linux, the NVIDIA closed-source driver was generally doing better than AMD Catalyst.

Compared to the lawless hunter-gatherers of the average mod scene, the Nexus network is Ancient Rome. Infrastructure, learning and law have built an empire of some 31,000 modders, who serve over five million members. Ridiculed by some for its chainmail bikinis and attacked by the odd barbarian – not everyone shares its code of etiquette or respect for intellectual property – it’s nonetheless a wonder of the gaming world. Hosting over 28,000 mods for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim alone, its importance for developer Bethesda can’t be overstated. This makes it rather surprising that Robin Scott, the site’s young entrepreneurial emperor, barely speaks to the company at all. “I saw how they just handed out the [modding] tools and set up a wiki, so I’m not going to get in their way,†he tells us. “I really try not to contact them at all. Probably less than once a year I talk to [community lead] Matt Grandstaff, and usually it’s just legal things. You can have this Sliding Doors scenario, where if I had bothered Bethesda a lot more and maybe done some advertising deals with them… But it’s just something I don’t want to get into. I don’t want to bother them and I don’t want them to bother me.“It’s almost like they say, ‘Don’t ask us too much, because if you do, you might open a can of worms you can’t shut again.’ Because there’s a general feeling that if modding becomes too much of a hassle for them, past the obvious making of the tools, they’re just going to wipe their hands clean and go, ‘**** it. This is too much of a pain in the arse.’ It’s about trying to keep the community in check so they’re not bothering Bethesda with what seem like petty squabbles.â€

Do you want the good or the bad news?
Ok, the good then. Remember the rumours last month that Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 700 series graphics cards wouldn’t be released until 2014? Well, it looks now like they may have been incorrect.
And quite wildly incorrect too. Word on the street now suggests that the GTX 700 line will actually be released this month, although there’s been no official confirmation.
Ready for the bad news? The top of the GTX 780 will not cost the rumoured £400 that had been suggested. In fact,Tom’s Hardware reports that it may be priced in line withNvidia’s Titan GPU which currently has an RRP of £800 (although many retailers are charging as much as £1,000).
That’s because it’s said to be based on the same GK110 silicon found inside Titan. And if true, where does that leave the Titan itself? Will Nvidia continue to support a card that fails to fall in line with its typical tiered GPU strategy?
Rival AMD recently launched its new top-of-the-line GPU, the Radeon HD 7990. It is not expected to launch the 8000 series cards in Q4 2013.

Sega recently announced a new mode for Company of Heroes 2 called Theatre of War. Shipping with the game in June, the mode will include new solo and cooperative scenarios based in different, well, theaters of war. Sorry, theatres.
The game will launch with 18 missions from noteworthy battles in 1941 in the Theatre of War mode, nine for each of the German and Soviet Red Army factions. At later dates, Relic will add new missions to the mode for Company of Heroes 2 players to download. The game will launch June 25 on PC.

There’s only one way to start this story. A long time ago, in a videogame universe far, far away, there was a videogame console called the Atari VCS. Upon its release, thirdparty licensing deals did not exist, meaning that there was just one company that initially programmed games for Atari’s console: Atari. It was a monopoly that couldn’t last. First came breakaway group Activision. Then Parker Brothers, the creator of Monopoly – as well as Cluedo and Risk – threw its hat into the ring too. The story of how the venerable toy company beat Atari at its own game and created the first ever Star Wars outing is a tale of pluck, courage and what a small band of rebels can do when they sneak in under the radar.“Parker Brothers was just a typical Yankee board game manufacturer,†remembers The Empire Strikes Back’s programmer, Rex Bradford, who joined the company in the summer of 1981. “Making videogames was a new kind of thing for them.†Originally hired to work on Parker Brothers’ lucrative handheld electronic toys – a booming business after the company’s smash-hit Merlin in 1978 – the young University of Massachusetts graduate quickly learned that his new bosses had their eyes on the VCS market.“It was like David and Goliath,†says Bill Bracy, then marketing manager at Parker Brothers. “Atari was a behemoth in the industry and totally controlled an enormous volume. But they were vulnerable in the software aspect because, unlike Nintendo, they hadn’t been able to secure a monopoly on the hardware and software.†Making a leap from what Bracy calls its history of “tortured cardboardâ€, Parker Brothers agreed with Lucasfilm to license games based on Star Wars across all platforms.Unwilling to tie itself to only licensing games for Atari’s console, Lucasfilm took the bait and Parker Brothers quickly set up its videogame development team, a secret ‘skunk works’ group comprised of Bradford, Bracy, programmer Mark Lesser, designer Sam Kjellman and project manager Richard Stearns, taking up residence on the top floor of the company’s corporate headquarters in Beverly, Massachusetts.

Tomb Raider took the top spot on Steam's weekly top ten selling products list, stealing it away from Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon – thanks to a major discount promotion.
The recently dubbed and currently discounted Star Wars 2013 Collection finished right behind the aforementioned titles, followed by StarDrive. The space strategy title jumped six spots from its tenth place finish in the week prior.
Indies had a good showing to round out the rest of the list, with survival sim Don’t Starve and co-op heist ‘em up Monaco finishing in ninth and tenth, respectively.

In the past days Greenheart Games hit the news with their so sad story. Basically what they did was uploading a modified version of their game called "Game Dev Tycoon" to the torrent network and whining that thousands of players used to play this instead buying a legit copy. (READ HERE) So far so good, let's take a look at what's really behind this.
Today I BOUGHT the game to take a look if it's worth all the yellin'. Short answer: it's not.

The developers of this game are not stupid, cuz they used multiple clever ways to promote a game which is reallly not worth to be played at all.
Anyone who plays the game will notice within the first 5 minutes that the game is a lame clone of what Kairosoft made really enjoyable via "Game Dev Story" for iOS and Android. The whole gameplay system is copied and mixed with plastique style graphics instead of Pixelart. The decision to do so is clear: plastique style games are currently very popular on the PC platform (Zynga games).
Sadly "Game Dev Tycoon" is not even 1% of the fun you can have with the original Kairosoft game. Greenheart Games seems to have known that anyway, so the idea of the piracy experiment appeared which gave the game a boost of popularity it does not deserve. Greenheart Games are copycats who rip off others great ideas and try to sell it as their own new game - pirating ideas and making money with it doesn't seem much better than pirating games.
A tip for anyone who likes the genre: Buy "Game Dev Story" for your mobile, for the half of the price of "Game Dev Tycoon" and have 100 times more fun playing

Originally slated for this spring, Plants vs. Zombies 2: It’s About Time is coming out this July, as PopCap community manager Stephanie Bayer posted on Twitter. The original Plants vs. Zombies was a huge hit for PopCap, launching on just about every platform available since its release on PC and Mac in 2009. The simple tower defense game made an especially large splash when it was released for iOS devices in 2010.Unfortunately, there are no details about Plants vs. Zombies 2 other than a release date.

Initially expected in May, the latest GPUs from Nvidia's anticipated GTX 700 series could launch by as early as next week.
Whilst the GTX 700 range has been the subject of much rumour and discussion in recent months, surfacing reports have detailed which cards can be expected.
First reported by Fudzilla, consumers can expect to see both the GTX 760Ti – which will take over from the 66Ti as the entry-level gaming GPU – along with the GTX 770.
Whilst the former is essentially regarded as a mildly updated GTX 670, the GTX 770 is set to offer higher clock speeds than the GTX 680, in addition to an overall performance boost of around five per cent.
Meanwhile, the flagship GPU of the series, the GTX 680, is widely regarded as a similar card to the recently launched Nvidia GTX Titan, rivalling the card in both performance and price.
With the launch of the GTX 670 Ti pencilled in for as soon as next week, third-party efforts should be expected in the coming months.

Microsoft has announced its flagship operating system Windows 8 has passed 100 million licenses sold across its initial six months on the market.
The figure puts the new OS on par with its predecessor Windows 7, which accumulated the same figure across the same length of time.
Despite the figures, Tami Reller, chief marketing and financial officer for Microsoft, stated that the numbers could have been higher, citing a lack of touch devices hindering the sales.
"If there had been more touch devices in the market, it would have been even more," said Reller during an interview on Microsoft's official blog.
However, Reller went on to highlight that the situation should become more favourable by July and the beginning of the back-to-school selling period as a wider variety of Windows 8 enabled devices are available.
Following its launch last October, Windows 8 scored 40 million sales throughout its first month on the market, whilst upping the figure to 60 million in January of this year.
Reller went on to state that the remaining 40 million licenses have been made up predominantly by sales of new PCs rather than existing Windows users upgrading to the new OS.
In addition to the sales of Windows 8, Microsoft also moved to address Windows Blue.
Despite confirming the existence and codename of Windows Blue, the firm didn't offer up any further information on the update, other than it would be available before the end of 2013.

Sides with consumers, if always-on connectivity stops enjoyment of games
Veteran game designer Will Wright has called EA’s handling of its SimCity launch “inexcusableâ€.
Speaking to Games Industry, the founder of Maxis and creator of SimCity, who had no involvement in the latest game himself, sympathised with the many gamers who found themselves unable to play, because of the title’s always-on server demands.
“I could have predicted – I kind of did predict there'd be a big backlash about the DRM stuff. It's a good game; I enjoy playing it a lot,†said Will.
“It was kind of like, 'EA is the evil empire, there was a lot of ‘Let’s bash EA over it’. That was basically inexcusable, that you charge somebody $60 for a game and they can’t play it. I can understand the outrage. If I was a consumer buying the game and that happened to me, I’d feel the same.â€
Wright expressed regrets that the SimCity team had to face such turmoil. Yet, his views on always-on connectivity remain pro-consumer.

Publisher assures fans series will not be tackling online-only play
EA has revealed it is developing The Sims 4 for PC and Mac with an eye to releasing the game in 2014.
The publishing giant stressed that the latest entry into the hugely successful series will focus on a single-player offline experience, seemingly reassuring fans the title will not be affected by the same ‘always-on’ problems SimCity has endured.
The franchise has previously tackled multiplayer and online play with The Sims Online, which was released in 2002. Thte title was later shutdown in 2008 however, having been rebranded to EA-Land beforehand.
Developed by The Sims Studio, EA promised that new game would include new options allowing users to share their creations and stories with friends and other fans.
To date, the publisher said The Sims series has sold more than 150 million copies, although this is a similar number to that revealed two years ago.

Attacks exploiting a previously unknown and currently unpatched vulnerability in Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser have spread to at least nine other websites, including those run by a big European company operating in the aerospace, defense, and security industries as well as non-profit groups and institutes, security researchers said. The revelation, from a blog post published Sunday by security firm AlienVault, means an attack campaign that surreptitiously installed malware on the computers of federal government workers involved in nuclear weapons research was broader and more ambitious than previously thought. Earlier reports identified only a website belonging to the US Department of Labor as redirecting to servers that exploited the zero-day remote-code vulnerability in IE version 8. ... 'The specific Department of Labor website that was compromised provides information on a compensation program for energy workers who were exposed to uranium,' CrowdStrike said. 'Likely targets of interest for this site include energy-related US government entities, energy companies, and possibly companies in the extractive sector. Based on the other compromised sites other targeted entities are likely to include those interested in labor, international health and political issues, as well as entities in the defense sector.'

There's little that's more frustrating than being a legal customer and getting screwed over by the company you're supporting. If there's a perfect example of this, it's with Microsoft's OS and its millions of customers that have had to ring its tech support lines for activation help. Recently, a Techgage writer got bit by an issue with Windows 8 — caused by Microsoft itself — and wasn't even able to call to fix it. Microsoft has two problems to solve here: it needs online chat support (like most large companies in 2013) and itdefinitely needs an activation system that doesn't make things difficult for its legal customers on a too-regular basis."

A listing for a PC version of Grand Theft Auto V has appeared on two separate retail websites.
Eurogamer reports that both Amazon Germany andGamesOnly.at are currently taking pre-orders for the SKU.
Rockstar has so far confirmed Grand Theft Auto V only for Xbox 360 and PS3, with no suggestion to date the game is pencilled in for either PC or indeed next-gen consoles.
Although Rockstar isn’t always one for PC support (Red Dead Redemption, for instance, was never released on PC), many of its recent releases have made the jump including LA Noire and, of course, Grand Theft Auto IV.

On the fence about heading to Build? Microsoft's annual conference is scheduled from June 26th to the 28th, and developers in attendance will likely hear quite a bit more about the latest version of Windows 8. MS will also make a public preview available during the event, Julie Larson-Green shared at the Wired Business Conference in New York City today. A final version of Windows 8.1 "Blue" is expected by the end of the year, bringing cosmetic updates and other features, such as a new side-by-side app view and Internet Explorer 11. In March, we managed to dig through pre-release build 9364 -- it sounds like we'll be able to take a much closer look at the new operating system this summer, but you can click through our gallery of screenshots for an early preview, right now.

Yesterday's Diablo 3 patch 1.0.8 contained a bug that enabled a gold duping exploit that some people, who should be ashamed of themselves (read: well done - can I have some please?), took full advantage of.Blizzard had to take both the gold and real-money Auction Houses offline, and then bring the game into maintenance to deal with it. "My name's Bob and yes, I am a cheater."
Yet despite the patch only launching earlier that day, Blizzard decided not to roll back the servers to the point at which it was deployed. In other words, the gold dupers still have their cash.Explained Blizzard community manager Lylirra on the game's forum: "At this time (and after careful consideration), we've decided to not move forward with rolling back the servers."We feel that this is the best course of action given the nature of the dupe, how relatively few players used it, and the fact that its effects were fairly limited within the region."We've been able to successfully identify players who duplicated gold by using this specific bug, and are focusing on these accounts to make corrections. While this is a time-consuming and very detailed process, we believe it's the most appropriate choice given the circumstances."We know that some of you may disagree, but we feel that performing a full rollback would impact the community in an even greater way, as it would require significant downtime as well as revert the progress legitimate players have made since patch 1.0.8 was released this morning."Those "corrections" Lylirra mentioned may be temporary locks, suspensions and/or bans depending on the severity of the exploits. It's unlikely any illegally obtained money will be kept. You can read the Diablo 3 Exploitation Policy online, if you like, but it's a bit boring - it's no Song of Ice and Fire.

Electronic Arts – using a known third-party service – registered the dot-com domains for Battlefield's 13-20. Fusible took note of the registrations, going on to mention that EA owns most of the Battlefield domains between one and 20 now. Battlefield 4 is expected to launch later this year.
Although the initial instinct may be to call this long-term planning a little overdone, it's not so crazy if Battlefield takes the annualized approach á la an EA Sports title. Battlefield '14 through Battlefield '20 doesn't sound so crazy now.

Samsung is looking to phase out from the microSD market as it focuses on embedded memory solutions, reportsDigiTimes.
According to industry sources, profits for making microSD cards have shrunk gradually, encouraging Samsung to place more emphasis on embedded memory solutions used in smartphones and tablets.
Samsung is expected to channel its resources into its in-house produced NAND flash, controller ICs and mobile DRAM chips.
This change in direction will follow fellow SD card manufacturers such as Toshiba and SanDisk, who have both stepped into manufacturing embedded memory solutions for mobile devices.

World of Warcraft lost approximately 1.3 million subscribers in the first quarter of calendar year 2013, Activision Blizzard said today. The losses were mostly in Eastern territories where a large majority of the game's players are based, said the publisher during a financials call today. The subscription count now sits at more than eight million, and Activision notes that it "remains the #1 subscription-based MMORPG in the world".Activision boss Bobby Kotick said that the declines in the World of Warcraft business, along with other factors, "raise concerns" as the firm heads into the competitive holiday period."Further declines are likely," he added, with next year's player count expected to be even lower than at present.Kotick said the firm plans to release new content more frequently, to keep players engaged and to make it easier for relapsed players to return to the game.

Wolfenstein: The New Order will be an exclusively single-player experience, developer MachineGames revealed to GameSpot. This makes it the first non-mobile Wolfenstein game to not have multiplayer in over two decades. Multiplayer was introduced to the series in 2001's Return to Castle Wolfenstein and was featured in later titles such as 2003's Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory and 2009's Wolfenstein. So why no multiplayer this time? The Q4 2013 release sounds early in the next gen's launch, so is it being rushed out as a launch title or is there more to the story? Maybe it's a much more narrative-focused game. That might sound unlikely given its blockheaded source material, but the ex-Starbreeze staff at MachineGames managed to spin an a surprisingly engaging yarn out of the forgetable Riddick license. Plus multiplayer was never really Starbreeze's forte anyway."Anyone who had the misfortune to try the online gameplay for The Darkness will know that this is not an area where Starbreeze has traditionally excelled," said Dan Whitehead in hisThe Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena review where he added, "The multiplayer feels as though it was included through obligation rather than inspiration, and contributes little of value."

The Battlefield 3 servers have been under a DDOS attack for the past several days, aimed at interfering with network communication and preventing access to multiplayer, EA says. The barrage has not breached any user data and EA is working to stop the attack, the publisher adds.
"The current Battlefield 3 outages are a result of activity that appears to be aimed at overwhelming our back-end infrastructure. We are working on a variety of solutions to address this problem and are focused on resolution as quickly as possible. We appreciate your patience and support," EA writes. "We are incredibly disappointed by these activities and the impact they are having on all of our ability to enjoy BF3, thank you for your patience as we work to resolve these issues."
EA held rolling restarts of the Battlefield 3 servers to apply updates, and any new information will be posted on BattleLog.

Scammers are trying to take advantage of the latest wave of large-capacity USB memory sticks by selling fake devices with much lower memory than advertised.
According to the UK-based USBTrader.com (a trader in USB sticks, naturally), unscrupulous dealers are using a relatively simple "hack" to make smaller capacity devices appear to be higher value 64GB sticks, then selling them at seemingly bargain prices to online customers.
"This kind of con is nothing new," said Alan Dhillon Customer Service Manager from USBTrader.com, "Somebody always tries to take advantage of customers whenever a new technology arrives on the market, and the introduction of a new generation of massive capacity flash sticks has brought them out again.
"What is new is the relative ease that the scam can be achieved. With the huge capacity of these devices, it could be weeks or even months before the victim knows they've been duped. By then, the criminal is long gone."
The site explained how the fakes are produced: "They buy cheap, lower memory USB sticks and hack the device so when it is viewed on a computer, it appears to have a higher memory and sell it at a bargain price through internet shops and eBay. The victim only realises they have been scammed when the device is filled to its (much lower) capacity."
USBTrader.com’s Alan said that prices for genuine 64GB memory sticks start at around £25, so the scammers appeal to shoppers' eye for a bargain by offering their hacked devices for less than half the price.
"Many of these are fly-by-night merchants with low feedback and lower scruples," said Alan, "Once the negative feedback and complaints start rolling in, they close down that particular store front and start over again.
“By that time, they've probably sold hundreds of fake memory sticks."
USBTrader.com say the best defence is simply to do your homework and only buy from reputable dealers.
"Who do you trust with your technology budget? A long-established company such as ourselves with reams of positive testimonials, or somebody on eBay called xxzzyy4152?"
As Dhillion mentioned, fakes are common in the industry - previously PCR has reported on fake netbooks, fake Cisco gear, and fake WD drives, for example.

Publisher claims Changyou copied plot, theme, setting, dialogue and designs in Project Tank
Wargaming is suing a Chinese game developer for a “disturbingly similar†title to its hugely successful MMO World of Tanks.
As reported by Polygon, the publisher has filed a lawsuit in a US district court based in Illinois against Project Tank, which also goes under the names of Tanks Ground War.
In its document filed to the court, Warmgaming labeled the game, developed by Changyou, “unoriginal and disturbingly similar game based on World of Tanksâ€, and that it “copied the plot, theme, dialogue, mood, setting, pace, and character of World of Tanks, in addition to copying specific features, items, tanks, and artworkâ€.
The developer also claims that textures and models have been ripped from World of Tanks and put into Project Tank, and that some of its patents related to dynamic battle session matchmaking in a multiplayer game are also being used.
It also said that Changyou had copied designs of tanks from World of Tanks “that never existed in real lifeâ€.

In a response that truly seems to be from a core Microsoft developer, we are told about why Windows kernel development continues to fall further and further behind that of the Linux kernel. He says, 'The cause of the problem is social. There's almost none of the improvement for its own sake, for the sake of glory, that you see in the Linux world. ... There's no formal or informal program of systemic performance improvement. We started caring about security because pre-SP3 Windows XP was an existential threat to the business. Our low performance is not an existential threat to the business. See, component owners are generally openly hostile to outside patches: if you're a dev, accepting an outside patch makes your lead angry (due to the need to maintain this patch and to justify in in shiproom the unplanned design change), makes test angry (because test is on the hook for making sure the change doesn't break anything, and you just made work for them), and PM is angry (due to the schedule implications of code churn). There's just no incentive to accept changes from outside your own team. You can always find a reason to say "no," and you have very little incentive to say "yes."'"

The push notifications on our mobile devices aren't just for convenience's sake -- they let apps stay idle and conserve precious battery life. That would explain why Google Cloud Messaging is now integrated with all versions of Chrome and Chrome OS, then. While both platforms are usually online as a matter of course, GCM lets developers refresh a web app or extension only when there are noteworthy changes, such as new chats. All end users have to do is sign in. Developers will have to build the feature into their apps before anyone sees the benefits, but we wouldn't be surprised if ourChromebooks last for just a little bit longer in the near future.

You already know that Half-Life 2 for Xbox, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC and OS X is excellent, but have you tried it on Linux? Well, yes, technically speaking, you couldn't actually play that version until this week when it launched on Steam for Linux, but our question stands! Yeah, that's what we thought. Now that that's straightened out, we might warn you about the beta nature of HL2's Linux launch. Like other Valve titlesrecently released to Steam for Linux, Half-Life 2 is merely a beta for now. Should you already own a copy for another platform, it'll show up in your Steam library as available for download like any other crossplatform game. Of course, you're probably too tied up with Half-Life 2's recently added Oculus Rift support on PC to think about a plain old keyboard/mouse experience. And hey, we can't blame you for that.
Interestingly, Valve's internal Steambox is powered by Steam's Linux version; it wouldn't be hard to imagine Valve scaling up its Linux game library ahead of the retail debut of various Steamboxes (or Steamboxen, if you will). That remains to be seen, of course, as Valve's made no official announcement regarding that project's availability.http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/10/half-life-2-linux/

After a long and awkward delay, there's been some movement in the saga known as "Surface Pro's Pen accessory won't work with the software that could most benefit from it." Microsoft's Panos Panay tweeted yesterday that he had a beta driver fromWacom that had enabled his Pen's pressure sensitivity in Adobe Photoshop. Around the same time, an updated driver ("Enhanced Tablet Driver 7.1.1-12") appeared on Wacom's site, which PocketNow reckons contains the necessary fix. This file may not be final, and there's no specific reference to Microsoft's tablet in its changelog, but it's definitely worth a try at the source link below. Meanwhile, if you're one of the artistic types who's been holding off from buying a Surface Pro until this is resolved, then maybe just stay patient a little longer until more users report back on their progress. We're giving it a go ourselves, and in any case we've been assured by our own contacts at Microsoft that there'll be a happy ending within days.

Sure, the novelty may have worn off years ago when it comes to those miniature USB-powered accessories that reside on your desk and suck power from a PC, but this nifty lamp from Satechi has a bit more going for it. The simply named USB LED Bottle Lamp consumes just 1.2 watts of power, and while it won't likely have enough output to fill a room, it'll probably do a fair job of bringing some warmth to your workstation. The kit includes only a lampshade, LEDs (rated for 50,000 hours) and a USB cable -- that's right, it's BYOB (Bring Your Own Base). A heavy liquor bottle might be the best fit when it comes to support, but you can use a vase or any similar vessel to keep the lamp upright, too. The USB Bottle Lamp can be yours today for just 25 bucks. Hit the source link below to pick one up.

Microsoft has discovered a new malicious Chrome extension and Firefox add-on that can hijack Facebook accounts.
The malware, detected by the firm as Trojan:JS/Febipos.Achecks to see if the current users is logged in to Facebook and attempts to download a configuration file that includes a list of commands.
Microsoft found that the trojan is capable of liking pages, sharing content, posting on people’s profiles, commenting on other posts, joining groups, inviting friends to groups and even chatting with people on your friends list.
The threat seems to be currently focused on targeting Facebook users in Brazil, but Microsoft is warning users to make sure they only install extensions and add-ons from trusted sources.
To make sure you’re not at risk, only install Chrome extensions from the Chrome Web Store and Firefox add-ons from the Mozilla site.
It does not appear that there is any equivalent malware targeted at Internet Explorer or Safari.

Rihanna was spotted recently visiting a Best Buy where she was snapped clutching a Razer Naga gaming mouse.
The Daily Mail has posted a series of photos showing the pop star buying the mouse in New York. Posting the pics would probably cost us a fair few pennies and wouldn’t be nearly as fun as brushing up on our photoshop skills (the term ‘skills’ is obviously used very loosely here) so we do hope you enjoy the impressive artist’s interpretation situated to the right of this text. Those who don’t (boo) can click through to the story here.
So it seems Rihanna must be getting her WoW on in between touring, as the Razer Naga is specially designed for MMO gaming, with 17-optimised buttons, custom interface add-ons and an ergonomic design for long gaming sessions.
Or, there’s a slight possibility that Rihanna was simply buying it for her 19-year-old brother Rajan who was accompanying her on the shopping trip…

YouTube turned seven back in March, at which time itboasted its advertisers include all of the Ad Age Top 100 brands. While commercials are YouTube's bread and butter, the video streaming service is now introducing paid channels in a bid to make additional profit from its one billion monthly users.
There are more than one million channels on YouTube, but the company says creators have been demanding more flexibility to monetise and distribute content, thus paid channels has launched in beta.
YouTube, said: "Starting today, we’re launching a pilot program for a small group of partners that will offer paid channels on YouTube with subscription fees starting at $0.99 per month. Every channel has a 14-day free trial, and many offer discounted yearly rates. For example, Sesame Street will be offering full episodes on their paid channel when it launches. And UFC fans can see classic fights, like a full version of their first event from UFC’s new channel.
"You might run into more of these channels across YouTube, or look here for a list of pilot channels. Once you subscribe from a computer, you’ll be able to watch paid channels on your computer, phone, tablet and TV, and soon you’ll be able to subscribe to them from more devices."
More paid channels will roll out in the next few weeks, and will be available to 'qualifying partners' as a self-service option.

Real-money and gold Auction Houses back online after economy crippling bug is fixed
Blizzard is to donate money obtained by players who exploited an in-game bug in Diablo III to charity.
In a forum post, production director John Hight said that the exploit has since been fixed, and the game’s gold and real-money Auction Houses were now back online.
Previously Blizzard had claimed a “relatively small number†of users had taken advantage of a new bug after a recent game patch that allowed them to increase their gold ten-fold by cancelling a transaction just before it went through.
It said only 415 players had taken advantage of the bug for personal gain, and that the company has managed to redeem more than 85 per cent in excess gold from the accounts involved.
The money from auctions conducted by now suspended or banned players, as well as Blizzard’s transaction fees, will now be donated to Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.

The author of this article goes over a format string vulnerability he found in The Elder Scrolls series starting with Morrowind and going all the way up to Skyrim. It's not something that will likely be exploited, but it's interesting that the vulnerability has lasted through a decade of games. 'Functions like printf() and its variants allow us to view and manipulate the program’s running stack frame by specifying certain format string characters. By passing %08x.%08x.%08x.%08x.%08x, we get 5 parameters from the stack and display them in an 8-digit padded hex format. The format string specifier ‘%s’ displays memory from an address that is supplied on the stack. Then there’s the %n format string specifier – the one that crashes applications because it writes addresses to the stack. Powerful stuff.'"

Trion Worlds has announced that their MMOG will be going free-to-play as of June 12. All content within the game itself will be free to all players, including dungeons, raids, and all content updates. However, players will be able to pay for experience boosts, mounts, and other cosmetic changes. Paying a subscription fee will still be an option, giving players Patron bonuses like extra experience, inventory slots, and bonus mount speed.“Part of our philosophy is that the best items in-game are earned in-game,†says creative director Bill Fisher. “We do offer a lot in the store, but for the very best gear, you’ve got to go out and earn that yourself.â€

Free update for Windows 8 coming later in the year, possibly to smaller tablets
The first major update for Windows 8 is coming later in the year under the banner of Windows 8.1.
Previously known by the less obvious codename Windows Blue, the free update will do much the same thing as the old service packs through which Microsoft issued major changes to prior operating systems.
The news, reported by Engadget, was broken to attendees of today's JP Morgan's Technology Media & Telecom Conference by Microsoft's Windows Division CMO and CFO Tami Reller.
"It will deliver the latest new innovations across an increasingly broad array of form factors of all sizes, display, battery life and performance, while creating new opportunities for our ecosystem,"," she said, as recorded by Pocket Lint.
"It will provide more options for businesses, and give consumers more options for work and play."

Graphics card manufacturer AMD has at last revealed the Radeon HD 8000 series of GPUs… but it’s likely not what many consumers were expecting.
Gamers had been hoping for a new line of desktop cards to rival the upcoming GTX 700 series from Nvidia. Instead, the HD 8000 series is actually just a rebranded version of its 7000 series cards designed for OEM manufacturers.
Confirmed SKUs include the Oland based HD 8570 and HD 8670, the Pitcairn based HD 8760, the Tahito Pro pair of the HD 8950 and HD 8970 and the mobile-focused 8970M amongst many others.
This means that AMD’s next line of PC graphics cards will be the 9000 series. These are being referred to as ‘Volcanic Island’ and are not expected to launch until 2013.

Microsoft has a good excuse for the Surface Pro's late arrival in the UK: the company claims that demand in the US stripped its cupboards bare, leaving nothing but RT crumbs to sell on this side of the Atlantic. In any case, Redmond tells us that a date has now been set, with the Core i5-powered tablet due to be available from Microsoft's online store from May 23rd. For once, Brits can look forward to dollar-equivalent pricing, with the 64GB version going for £719 and the 128GB model fetching £799 inclusive of VAT. (That may not be cheap, but at least it's fair.) Meanwhile, the bendy Touch Cover will continue to cost £99, and the more traditional key action of the Type Cover will add another tenner on top of that. So, there it is. Just in time for Haswell to make us wonder when a more power-efficient sequel might be coming out.

We don't know for sure that Dell's been experiencing the weak demand for Windows RT Samsung's been so vocal about, but significant price cuts to its XPS 10 tablet hybrid suggest it hasn't exactly been flying off the shelves. Not only has the $500 tag for the tablet with 32GB of storage dropped to $300, but adding another 32GB now only costs $50 more, instead of $100. Savings have extended to the keyboard dock, too -- opting for the bundle used to increase the overall cost by $180, but now that peripheral is only a $50 extra. (Make sure to lead with the bundle though, as it's $100 if added from the tablet-only customization options). The cost of optional LTE hasn't changed, however, so that 4G radio still costs an additional $100. While we haven't reached fire saleterritory just yet, the cuts are still a welcome discount for consumers. In the interest of preserving profit margins, perhaps Dell should ask Acer's president to consult next time it's cooking up new hardware.

New research from Gartner reveals PC shipments in Western Europe totalled 12.3 million in the first quarter, a decline of 20.5 per cent from the previous year.
"The first quarter of 2013 brought the worst quarterly decline in Western Europe since Gartner started tracking PC shipments in this region," said Meike Escherich, principal research analyst at Gartner.
"Wide availability of Windows 8-based PCs could not boost consumer PC purchases during the quarter. Although the new Metro-style user interface suits new form factors, users wonder about its suitability for traditional PCs – non-touchscreen desktops and notebooks."
Lenovo was the fastest-growing vendor, with a 7.2 per cent growth in desktop and notebook shipments in the past year.
HP and Acer both recorded declines of over 30 per cent and Lenovo and Apple were the only top-five vendors to record growth. Despite the decline, HP still managed to come out on top with 19.7 per cent of the market share.
PC shipments in the UK alone totalled 2.5 million is the first quarter, a decrease of 15.8 per cent.
"Many consumers no longer require a PC as usage of smartphones and tablets takes over," said Ranjit Atwal, research director at Gartner.
HP also retained the top position in the UK, despite losing nearly 25 per cent of its PC volume in a single year.

Microsoft it set to announce its 2nd-gen Surface RT tablet in June, according to supply chain sources.
The sources told publication DigiTimes that the estimated price for the 8-inch Surface RT will be between $249-299.
Taiwan-based makers told the site that the 8-inch tablet will use touch panels supplied by Samsung and Nvidia-developed processors.
The sources also claim there is an additional Microsoft tablet on the way that will be 10.’something’-inches in size, which will probably be smaller than the 10.6-inch model. This particular version is expected as early as the third quarter of 2013.
Earlier rumours suggested that Microsoft would actually release a 7-inch Surface tablet this year to compete with the likes of the iPad Mini and the Nexus 7.

Games on Google+ will be retired in June as part of a switch to a new gaming platform.
Google has revealed details about a new cross-platform game service called Google Play which will give users the ability to sync gaming activity between devices and save game progress on Google’s servers. As a result of the new service, Google+ Games will be no more after June 30th.
“Some games will be migrating data to an alternative destination site where you can continue to use your unused payments. Other games are offering a grace period in which you can use any available credits before the game is shutdown,†reads a Google blog post.
Google+ Games launched in August 2011 and offers titles from publishers such as Zynga, Halfbrick, Gameloft and Rovio.
Google has announced a number of other products that it will discontinue this year, including itspopular Google Reader service, which closes on July 1st, as well as its Meebo Bar publishing tool which will remain active until June 30th.

Download retailers have their doubts over a UK bill that will allow consumers to return ‘faulty’ digital content.
The bill – revealed in the Queen’s speech opening Parliament last week – says that any product a reasonable person would judge to be faulty must qualify for a refund.
This could have a big impact on games, particularly for ones that have bugs or other faults.
“Consumers of online content should be entitled to a right to redress if they are sold faulty content,†said Dermot Stapleton of digital download retailer GetGames.
“But assuming these laws are actually put in place, how do you enforce them on sites not based in the UK? Where would the burden of proof lie in the argument between ‘the game keeps freezing’ and ‘the game is fine – it’s your PC or broadband that is knackered’?
“And would it be fair to say that a patch/update constitutes a ‘replacement? We shouldn’t knock the Government for trying, but it doesn’t appear that they have been particularly well advised on how to shape these changes to consumer law.â€
UKIE is already speaking to authorities in a bid to assist in the new proposals: “We have already been working hard to educate the Government that bugs are an expected part of any game, due to their complex nature. We will continue to make the case that games are only ‘broken’ when they are fundamentally unplayable,†said UKIE boss Jo Twist.
But overall the bill is welcomed from the industry, with the likes of GOG.com already offering store credit for faulty games.
“It can be difficult to define what a ‘broken’ game is, especially if it is still being actively developed,†said GOG.com head of marketing and PR Trevor Longino.
“That said, we have a something of an internal definition for a faulty game at GOG.com: if our customers have an issue with a game, and our support team cannot fix it, we provide the gamer with a credit for another game. A store exchange, if you will.â€

Lenovo teased a potential sweet spot in its convertible laptop line when it revealed theIdeaPad Yoga 11S, blending the portability of the Yoga 11 with the raw performance of the Yoga 13. As of now, we can do more than just imagine how well that balance works: the Yoga 11S is at last available to order. Those who plunk down at least $800 can buy the bendy Windows 8 PC online from either Best Buy or Lenovo, although shoppers will want to think carefully before jumping in with both feet. While both outlets equip their Yogas with 4GB of RAM and a 128GB solid-state drive at that price, Best Buy lists a 1.5GHz Core i5 where Lenovo starts with a more modest 1.4GHz Core i3. No matter which outlet beckons, would-be owners will have to bide their time. Lenovo is quoting a four-week wait for new shipments, and Best Buy will only see the Yoga 11S grace its retail stores on June 23rd.

Nvidia is reportedly ready to release its GTX 780 card as soon as next week.
As claimed by Fudzilla, 'multiple sources' have confirmed that Nvidia will launch the new card on May 23rd, with third-party editions of the GPU expected to follow in subsequent weeks.
The report joins the seemingly endless speculation of the card, particularly its pricing and performance aspects.
Early speculation indicated that the GTX 780, whilst based on the same architecture as Nvidia's flagship Titan GPU, it won't provide the vast performance upgrade over its predecessor, the GT 680, that many were hoping for.
As for pricing, it's been widely reported that the card would be priced between £400 and £500 for Nvidia's reference GTX 780.
Meanwhile, third-party editions, which traditionally are overclocked whilst carrying additional features, could debut with a price tag between £500 and £600.

Microsoft has revealed pricing of the Surface Pro tablet ahead of its UK debut on May 23rd.
Redmond confirmed that Brits will be able to get their hands on the 64GB Surface Pro for £719, whilst those eyeing the 128GB model should expect to hand over £799.
The Surface Pro will enter a competitive UK tablet market, which continues to be dominated by Apple's iPad devices.
In comparison, Apple's top-end iPad is priced at £639 and sports its trademark Retina Display, along with 128GB of storage.
Despite outpacing the top iPad by 25 per cent, Microsoft maintains that the Surface Pro is a more complete solution than Apple's slate – a statement reiterated by Canalys analyst Tim Coulling.
"It runs on a Windows 8 operating system so there is access to legacy applications and that is why it's priced higher than the iPad. Microsoft wants customers to pay a premium for a full Windows experience," Coulling told The Channel.
"The vast majority of business people use an iPad and a notebook, so it will probably be cheaper to have one Surface Pro when they upgrade devices. IT managers will look to replace iPad with Pro because the OS is easier to manage and is familiar."
In addition to running the full Windows 8 operating system, over the RT edition used by the Surface RT, the Pro also offers the added benefit of far superior hardware.
The Pro packs a dual-core i5 processor clocked at 1.7GHz, 4GB of DDR3 RAM and 128GB of SSD storage, which along with its use of the full Windows 8 OS, could see the Pro viewed by some as a viable gaming system.

"The release candidate for the much-anticipated Linux Mint 15 'Olivia' is available for user testing. Its many new features include Cinnamon Control center, an improved login manager with HTML 5 support, a driver manager, and a lot of under-the-hood improvements. 'A new tool called MintSources, aka "Software Sources," was developed from scratch with derivative distributions in mind (primarily Linux Mint, but also LMDE, Netrunner and Snow Linux). It replaces software-properties-gtk and is perfectly adapted to managing software sources in Linux Mint. From the main screen you can easily enable or disable optional components and gain access to backports, unstable packages and source code.' This release with Cinnamon looks really tempting."

Two big titles from the Japanese games development scene are being converted for PC.
In separate announcements Square Enix revealed that 1998 release Final Fantasy VIII is to get an HD rework and re-release on PC. The same happened with its popular predecessor Final Fantasy VII last year.
Perhaps more excitingly Platinum Games has announced plans to bring Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance to PC.
This is great for two reasons. Firstly, too many of the Metal Gear games aren’t available on PC, so more releases are always welcomed. More importantly though the release will mark the debut of Platinum on the PC platform.
Could this mean there’s a chance of titles such as Bayonetta and Vanquish making the jump to Windows?
All of this points to a change of attitude for many Japanese developers who have typically either shunned the idea of PC releases or else not impressed with the quality of their ports. Dark Souls immediately springs to mind.

Though Mozilla has long been a proponent of WebRTC for plugin-free video and voice chat, it hasn't been ready to enable the full protocol in Firefox as a matter of course. It's more confident as of this week: the newly available Firefox 22 beta turns on complete WebRTC use by default, allowing for both live web conversations and peer-to-peer file swaps. There's more to the release as well, depending on the platform. Windows users receive support for HiDPI displays, like that of the Kirabook; every desktop user also gets gaming-friendly OdinMonkey JavaScript tuning, a web notification API and a font inspector. Android users won't have WebRTC and other upgrades for now, but everyone can experiment with the latest Firefox beta at the source links.

This time last year, YouTube claimed 72 hours of video was uploaded to the site each minute. Now, at the grand old age of eight, the clip streaming site says more than 100 hours of video footage is uploaded every 60 seconds, equivalent to over four days worth of content.
YouTube blogged: "Every month, more than one billion people come to YouTube to access news, answer questions and have a little fun. That’s almost one out of every two people on the internet.
"Millions of partners are creating content for YouTube and more than 1,000 companies worldwide have mandated a one-hour mid-day break to watch nothing but funny YouTube videos. Well, we made that last stat up, but that would be cool (the other stats are true)."
The milestone follows YouTube's recent move to start charging users subscription fees to view content.

Ever heard of 5Lives Studios? No, us neither. But come next month that will very likely have changed.
A video posted online by the studio very much seems to suggest that a Syndicate reboot (or more likely a ‘spiritual successor’) is heading to Kickstarter this month.
Rock Paper Shotgun speculates that the former Bullfrog developer pictured in the short is Mike Diskett. He was one of the original creators of the Syndicate franchise but is also credited on titles such as Grand Theft Auto IV, Theme Park and Urban Chaos.
Syndicate, of course, was the recipient of a surprisingly decent FPS release from EA last year. But we all know that isn’t the release that fans of the game are waiting for.
Gamers are encouraged to keep their eyes on the game’s official site. You can also visit thedeveloper’s website, although there’s little in the way of information there.

On top of yesterday's 4K announcement, Samsung has also given us a quick heads-up on one of the prototype displays it's planning to show off at this year's Display Week event. It's a highly gawp-worthy 3,200 x 1,800 ("WQXGA+") panel destined for 13-inch laptops that insist on taking things further than the Retina MacBook Pro (2,560 x 1,600) or Samsung's Series 9 prototype (2,560 x 1,440, shown above). As an added advantage, the panel is promised to deliver "30 percent greater power-savings" compared to existing LCDs thanks to a reduction in the number of driver circuits as well as more efficient backlight units. Display Week starts today, so we should soon have a first-person account of this unheard-of pixel density straight from Samsung's stall.

A reimagining of 1997's Shadow Warrior has been announced for PC and next-gen consoles.
Poland based Hard Reset studio Flying Wild Hog is handling the resurrection of 3D Realms' 1997 FPS. The studio said in a post on itsFacebook page:
"Our next project is finally revealed, we're working on a total reimagining of Shadow Warrior with [publisher] Devolver Digital."
An official website for the game has been launched, along with the following teaser trailer.
Shadow Warrior
In our 8/10 Shadow Warrior review, we said the game is "a Doom-style slaughter em 'up starring a character named Lo Wang, who is essentially Duke Nukem with a sword, some darts, and a vastly expanded pool of catch phrases".
Flying Wild Hog was formed in 2011, when it consisted of developers and designers who previously worked at the likes of People Can Fly, CD Projekt RED and City Interactive.
Its debut project, PC exclusive cyberpunk FPS Hard Reset, holds a 73Metascore.

Asus has revealed details about its latest device, the Zenbook Infinity, which will be unveiled at Computex 2013.
The firm claims the Zenbook Infinity is the world’s first ultrabook with a lid made from Corning Gorilla Glass 3. It will have a body made up of a glass and aluminium fusion and measure only 15.5mm thin.
The Gorilla Glass has Native Damage Resistance (NDR) making the new device highly resistant to scuff marks and scratches. Gorilla Glass 3 with NDR has three times the scratch resistance of Gorilla Glass 2.

NVIDIA's Tegra 4i appeared in February boasting, amongst other things, its built-in Cat. 3 LTE modem capable of speeds as high as 100Mbps. What NVIDIA didn't make obvious at the time was that the i500 modem, the fruit of its Icera acquisition, had the processing grunt to enable a software modem update to boost its speed to Cat. 4 LTE (150Mbps.) We had a quick visit with NVIDIA and saw a "perfect world demo" (pic above) of the device being bombarded at 150Mbps as well as placing an actual call on AT&T's network and streaming video. Of course LTE-Advanced doesn't exist in the real world yet, nor does a real handset sporting this chip, though seeing another player battling incumbent Qualcomm in this space before these networks have even been lit up certainly warms our hearts. Check the PR text for all the nitty gritty details after the break.

Motion sensing hardware to break away from Xbox One
The next-gen iteration of Kinect will be released for Windows PC, Microsoft’s corporate VP of interactive entertainment business has said.
Confirming the news to Polygon, Ben Kilgore said the Kinect would be made compatible with PCs, and would be released for the platform “at some point down the lineâ€.
The new motion sensing hardware is set to play a key and central role in Microsoft’s newly unveiled Xbox One console.
During last night’s reveal, Microsoft said the device will now be able to sense even the slightest rotation of a wrist or shoulder, as well as shifts in balance and transfer of weight.
It claimed the Kinect could detect a player’s emotional state, read their heartbeat, recognise specific users and would be able to transfer 2GB of data per second in 1080p.

FIFA 14 is built using a brand new next-gen game engine… which the PC version won’t use.
The football game will on PS4 and Xbox One use the fancy new EA Sports Ignite engine which delivers a host of improvements involving opponent AI and animation.
But despite the fact that the new generation of consoles basically ARE PCs, EA will not be using the EA Sports Ignite engine on the platform.
"Clarification for the PC related questions earlier," EA Sports FIFA community manager Rob Hodson confirmed on Twitter. "EA Sports Ignite will power FIFA 14 on Xbox One and PS4, not PC."
FIFA 13 marked an important year for PC gamers because it was the first time that development of the PC build had caught up with consoles and brought it into line with Xbox 360 and PS3. That this trend won’t continue this year is a crushing disappointment to PC gamers.
Fingers crossed for FIFA 15.

The crazy kids at Fogbeam Labs have a new blog post positing that there is a trend towards advanced projects in NLP, Information Retrieval, Big Data and the Semantic Web moving to the Apache Software Foundation. Considering that Apache UIMA is a key component of IBM Watson, is it wrong to believe that the organization behind Hadoop, OpenNLP, Jena, Stanbol, Mahout and Lucenewill ultimately be the home of a real 'Star Trek Computer'? Quoting: 'When we talk about how the Star Trek computer had “access to all the data in the known Universeâ€, what we really mean is that it had access to something like the Semantic Web and the Linked Data cloud. Jena provides a programmatic environment for RDF, RDFS and OWL, SPARQL and includes a rule-based inference engine. ... In addition to supporting the natural language interface with the system, OpenNLP is a powerful library for extracting meaning (semantics) from unstructured data - specifically textual data in an unstructured (or semi structured) format. An example of unstructured data would be the blog post, an article in the New York Times, or a Wikipedia article. OpenNLP combined with Jena and other technologies, allows “The computer†to “read†the Web, extracting meaningful data and saving valid assertions for later use.'"Speaking of the Star Trek computer, I'm continually disappointed that neither Siri nor Google Now can talk to me in Majel Barrett's voice.

Mortal Kombat Komplete Edition will be available for PC digitally on July 3, with a retail release following on August 2."Mortal Kombat Komplete Edition for PC [features] all of the downloadable content (DLC), including intrepid warriors Skarlet, Kenshi and Rain, as well as the notorious dream stalker Freddy Krueger. NetherRealm's game has been ported to PC by High Voltage Software, which recently developed the HD re-release of Hideo Kojima's Zone of the Enders.
We said in our 2011 Mortal Kombat review: "Not the best or the deepest, but extremely likeable, gory amusement."
Last year, the series' longstanding creative director Ed Boon saidNetherRealm must add significant new ideas to the next Mortal Kombat game.
Earlier this week, Warner released a new Batman: Arkham Origins trailer. It also revealed that DC Comics supervillain Deathstroke will be a playable character in the game's challenge mode.

HP has unveiled a 20-inch PC designed to be easily transported around the home or office.
The Envy Rove 20 can be unplugged and moved around cable-free, thanks to a battery with four hours of life from each charge. This effectively turns the Rove 20 into a giant tablet.
At 11.86 pounds, it’s not the lightest gadget to lug around and you probably wouldn't want to carry it on the bus, but it shouldn't cause too much hassle when moving it between rooms, plus it's got a hinge which can be activated by pressing a button, making screen adjustments a little easier.
One feature that HP is keen to focus on is that the Rove 20 can lie nearly flat, allowing the family to gather round and use it as an electronic board game-type machine. The device comes pre-installed with games such as Monopoly, Jigsaw Wars and Disney Fairies.
HP’s Consumer PCs and Solutions Senior VP and General Counsel Ron Coughlin said: “Customers are looking for mobility and flexibility in their computing devices to give families new ways to bring generations together. HP is evolving to meet our customers’ needs by designing next-generation form factors, like the Rove mobile All-in-One PC, which will enable people to connect, share and create in ways they never imagined.â€
The Envy Rove 20 features a Haswell chip, comes with 1TB or storage as well as an 8GB SSD, includes WiFi and WiDi, and runs Windows 8.
The device is expected to ship sometime in July. HP hasn’t officially confirmed pricing yet, but it is expected to cost around $1,000.

Nvidia has finally lifted the lid on its latest range of graphics cards, announcing the release of the GeForce GTX 780.
The GPU maker confirmed the release of the card in the UK, which is available now for £549.
With a base clock speed of 863Mhz, which can be pushed up to 900Mhz, the GTX 780 also comes with 3GB of DDR5 RAM at a speed of 6Gbps. As for connectivity, the card sports two DL-DVI slots, one Displayport and a single HDMI connection.
Performance-wise, the GTX780 offers a huge 70 per cent boost over Nvidia's GTX 580, in addition to a sizeable 15-20 per cent upgrade on its predecessor, the GTX 680.
Meanwhile, the 780 beats out rival card maker AMD's flagship 7970 card by around a 20 - 65 per cent upgrade.
Third-party renditions of the card are expected to be announced shortly.

Four decades ago the Ethernet protocol made its debut as a way to connect machines in close proximity, today it is the networking layer two protocol of choice for local area networks (LANs), wide area networks (WANs) and everything in between. For many people Ethernet is merely the RJ45 jack on the back of a laptop, but its relative ubiquity and simplicity belie what Ethernet has done for the networking industry and in turn for consumers and enterprises. Ethernet has in the space of 40 years gone from a technology that many in the industry viewed as something not fit for high bandwidth, dependable communications to the default data link protocol."

When NVIDIA released the GTX Titan in February, it was the first consumer graphics card to use the GK110 GPU from NVIDIA that included 2,688 CUDA cores / shaders and an impressive 6GB of GDDR5 frame buffer. However, it also had a $1000 price tag that was the limiting specification for most gamers. With today's release of the GeForce GTX 780 they are hoping to utilize more of the GK110 silicon they are getting from TSMC while offering a lower cost version with performance within spitting range. The GTX 780 uses the same chip but disables a handful more compute units to bring the shader count down to 2,304 — still an impressive bump over the 1,536 of the GTX 680. The 384-bit memory bus remains though the frame buffer is cut in half to 3GB. Overall, the performance of the new card sits squarely between the GTX Titan ($1000) and AMD's Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition ($439), just like its price. The question is, are PC gamers willing to shell out $220+ dollars MORE than the HD 7970 for somewhere in the range of 15-25% more performance?"As you might guess, there's similarly spec-laden coverage at lots of other sites, including Tom's, ExtremeTech, and TechReport.HotHardware, too.

Acer's C7 Chromebook is the cheapest way to get in on Google's cloud-OS party. But, it still ships a 320GB 5,400RPM drive. Truth be told, such a large amount of local storage is counter to the whole idea of Chrome OS -- not to mention that the slow spin introduces a certain amount of unwelcome lag. Thankfully the bargain-basement $199 laptop is about to get an SSD makeover, according to a listing at Best Buy. The official specs at the Google Play store still list the standard hard drive, but the big box shop has a model featuring 16GB of solid state storage. The updated C7 keeps the same affordable price point, though we have no idea when it might start shipping. Best Buy lists the Chromebook simply as "coming soon," with no estimated delivery date. From what we can see there are no other changes to the machine, so if you weren't a fan of the cheap construction before, don't expect that to change.

Windows users have long wanted the Start button to make a triumphant return to Windows 8. Now, it appears Microsoft has granted their wish, sort of.
Microsoft has announced the release of two new mice, which lone behold, contain a Windows button. Yes, an actual, physical Windows button.
Whilst the Sculpt Comfort Mouse sports a large Windows 8-esque blue button on its side, the travel-sized Sculpt Mobile Mouse incorporates the trademark button just below its mouse wheel.

On the face of it, Blizzard has been slow to adapt to the rise of mobile and free-to-play, just like parent company Activision. Fellow industry leaders EA and Ubisoft moved quickly to embrace emerging platforms and business models, but for Activision Blizzard ‘mobile’ often meant companion apps for World Of Warcraft and matchmaking platform Battlenet, or the now free Call Of Duty subscription service, Elite. Hearthstone: Heroes Of Warcraft, a collectible card game set in the World Of Warcraft universe, is Blizzard’s first free-to-play game. Soon after its launch on PC and Mac, it will become its first iPad game, too.Yet Hearthstone should not be seen as a rushed bid to hitch the studio to two lucrative bandwagons. It’s been in development for over two years, and is being made by Team 5, a new 15-strong unit of multidisciplinary staff assembled specifically to make games like this. Its mandate is to make smaller projects that can be iterated on rapidly and released in distinctly un-Blizzard-like time frames. CEO Rob Pardo promised his PAX East audience that when he said the game would be on iPad soon after PC and Mac, he meant this year, not ‘Blizzard soon’. Pardo made it quite clear that his studio’s love of collectible card games predated the rise of mobile and free-to-play, his claim backed up by some grainy photos of badly coiffed developers sitting cross-legged on office floors playing Magic: The Gathering.“When we’re making a game, we try to figure out what the business model is and the platforms are after we know what kind of game we’re making,†Eric Dodds, the game’s lead designer, tells us. “We’re excited about card games, so free-to-play makes a lot of sense. One of the things we wanted to capture with this game is for you to feel like you’re touching the cards, and of course, for an iPad game that makes a whole lot of sense.â€Both the early iPad build shown behind closed doors at PAX and the PC version playable on the show floor have a tactile quality to them, meaning everything looks, sounds and feels like it has weight. Cards aren’t just played, they’re slammed down, kicking up little dust clouds as they land. Send a card out to attack another and it moves towards its target, pausing above it for a split second before lunging in to strike, the resulting damage counters enveloped by cartoonish hit sparks. Move a card from left to right before playing it and it tilts slightly; it’s barely noticeable, but adds to the sense that you’re playing with a real, physical deck.

Last month the two brothers at Greenheart Games implemented a brilliant bug into pirated copies of their game, Game Dev Story, that made it so anyone playing a cracked copy would unwittingly fail due to piracy. Now Greenheart has explained on its blog that its game was successful in spite of a majority of its copies being pirated. "I'm happy to report that my brother Daniel can finally transition out of his full time job to focus exclusively on Greenheart Games," wrote Greenheart's Patrick Klug. "The support from paying players (who are still outnumbered by pirates) is what makes all this possible."Klug went on to explain its cheeky anti-piracy stunt brought in an influx of players and helped get Game Dev Tycoon greenlit on Steam.
That being said, the brothers Klug have been very critical of their own work and would like to improve their popular sim. "While it's clear that many players enjoy their experience with Game Dev Tycoon, we also saw some frustrations and have to admit that Game Dev Tycoon could use some more polish. From the feedback we received and from watching players play the game we can see that there are some flaws which hinder the game's potential and lessen the game experience."Greenheart was adamant that it didn't want Game Dev Tycoon to be a simple grindfest, and it should require more tactical thinking than pure time-killing brute force. "In Game Dev Tycoon you can create a good game from the start but you can also create a bad game with a great team. We like this and want to keep it that way but admittedly the balance is sometimes off. The problem is that the game is tuned for some play styles but not for others," Greenheart explained. "The game can be too punishing at certain stages and, what's worse, it doesn't give you enough feedback to be able to adapt your strategy. Sure, you could play following a wiki with a calculator at hand but we never wanted the game to be played this way."The developer would like to release an updated version of the game when it comes to Steam in August. "Don't expect any major additions (that's what a sequel is for!) but you can expect some improvements/small additions and a more polished game experience," Greenheart added. While Greenheart can't generate Steam keys until its closer to release, players can purchase Game Dev Tycoon from the developer's official site, and they'll be sent free Steam keys once the game is ready to go up on Valve's distribution service.

EA has announced the SimCity Amusement Park expansion that leaked earlier this month. It's out on 28th May on Origin. EA is yet to announce the price. The Amusement Park is a tourist attraction similar to casinos and landmarks, gameplay scripter Jason Halvorson explained. "Running a successful Amusement Park is almost a mini-game in itself."Your city will earn money from the Amusement Park by having guests go on rides and buying goods from concession stands, as you'd expect. But unlike landmarks and casinos, you need to get your park guests to rides and stands in the most efficient way possible. "It means you're really going to need to pay attention to the layout of your park in order to maximise profits," Halvorson said. You need to place one of three main gates for your park to get going. Each comes with one ride, one concession stand and a stub of road. There are a number of modules. Signs attract more tourists to your park as well to your entire city. Main attractions are the rides, which include roller coasters, Ferris wheels and go-karts. Secondary attractions are cheaper than main attractions, have a lower maintenance cost but don't satisfy as many riders and don't add as much attraction. They include the drop tower and carousel. Concession stands are the cheapest attractions and have a small capacity, but churn through guests quickly.Of most interest is the mini train station, which lets you customise the rail like a road. The rail can go through tunnels and over bridges. You can connect two train stations together to form a transport system for guests. The modules become available as you increase your daily profit and upgrade your park to higher levels.

In a Chinese invitation we received earlier today, Foxconn Technology Group and Mozilla confirmed an upcoming press conference that will detail and make theirFirefox OS partnership official. The event will take place in Taipei next Monday (just a few days before Computex truly kicks off), and it'll see Mozilla welcome the 19th partner to its Firefox OS alliance. There isn't much meat in the email, though we did spot a little hint in the rundown that says one or more new Firefox OS products will be displayed. Whatever they may be, we shall keep an eye out for them as soon as we land in Terry Gou's back garden next week.

Mopping up after malicious software can land you in a browser quagmire full of sketchy search engines, toolbars or worse. Google's latest version of its open-sourceChromium browser now has a remedy for much of that thanks to a 'reset profile' setting discovered by code tinkerer François Beaufort. You can revert the defaults for search, homepage, content settings and cookies all in one go, while also disablingextensions. Since Chromium features often pop up later in Chrome, that means your life may soon be easier after your, ahem, friend has a brush with the dark side of the internet.

Soccer coaching sim Football Manager 2013 is the best-selling entry in the series' history, going all the way back to the original Championship Manager line in the 1990s. Sports Interactive Director Miles Jacobsen announced the landmark on Facebook, noting the game had scored over a million sales since its launch in November 2012.
As this Euro soccer season nears its end, fans are already looking ahead to the next one, and the next Football Manager. On the back of the latest entry bulging net sales, we now know Football Manager 2014 will take to the pitch on Linux.
Jacobsen revealed FM2014 is confirmed to come to PC, Mac and Linux. It'll be a crossplay game, meaning any purchase enables play on all three platforms. So now SI's seemingly unstoppable black hole of time has one more way to claim lives - you have been warned.

The UK has been the first games market to produce an accurate download chart for PC games.
Also going live today is a chart that mixes download and retail sales, underlining the scale of the PC games market.
This morning UK trade association Ukie unveiled its digital chart project for PC, a major effort undertaken with data tracker Ipsos. After running in beta for a year, the new charts and tracking are now recording digital sales. The data from the new PC chart comes direct from developers and publishers.
This morning Ukie has said that, for March 2013, SimCity was the best-selling game on PC when you combine digital and retail sales.
But a digital-only record names BioShock Infinite as the download No.1, proving the spread of sales on PC across both boxed and client-served games.
The full set of charts can be found below.
There is one catch to the system: not everyone in the industry is signed up to supply data. Major PC games publishers Disney, Electronic Arts, NCsoft, Sega, Square-Enix, Take-Two, Ubisoft and Warner Bros and some independent developers are key partners on the project. But the clearest absences are Activision Blizzard and Bethesda.
Activision's StarCraft II expansion Heart of the Swarm, for instance, is recorded at just No.2 in the boxed charts released today - but as one of the major releases in March would likely have factored higher in the combined charts if Blizzard was supplying its data.
Ukie is now reiterating its call for the entire games industry - from big firms like Activision to small developers selling games to UK customers - to take part in the project.

SimCity players are now able to purchase and download the game's first expansion DLC, titled 'Amusement Park'.
Developer Maxis has marked the release with a six-minute-long 'overview' video, which not only offers a good look at the new content, but also shares developer tips and strategies for maximizing profits from your park."The Amusement Park is a tourist attraction similar to casinos and landmarks, however the way in which you use the Amusement Park is very different," explains Maxis.
"Your city earns money from the Amusement Park by having guests either go on rides or purchase goods from concession stands. Unlike landmarks and casinos, where you're paid by the amount of guests you have in your attraction, you'll need to actually get your park guests to rides and concessions stands in the most efficient way possible. So what does that mean? It means you're really going to need to pay attention to the layout of your park in order to maximize profits."

Shipments of the mobile devices to hit 229.3 million this year.
IDC's latest Worldwide Quarterly Tablet Tracker claims tablet shipments will grow 58.7 per cent year-on-year in 2013, rising from 144.5 million to reach 229.3 million.
In fact, the rise in tablet popularity is set to affect the PC market, passing laptop shipments this year, and all PCs – desktops and laptops combined – by 2015.
Apple has been dominating the tablet market from day one, but the space is increasingly supported by low-priced Android devices. The worldwide average selling price (ASP) for tablets is set to fall 10.8 per cent to $381 this year, and continue to fall further, though the ASP of a PC in 2013 is nearly double that at $635.
Screen size has also been another differentiator to support the tablet space, with the original iPad's 9.7-inch screen being challenged by seven-inch models and other options.
Ryan Reith, program manager for IDC's Mobility Trackers, said: "What started as a sign of tough economic times has quickly shifted to a change in the global computing paradigm with mobile being the primary benefactor. Tablets surpassing portables in 2013, and total PCs in 2015, marks a significant change in consumer attitudes about compute devices and the applications and ecosystems that power them.
"IDC continues to believe that PCs will have an important role in this new era of computing, especially among business users. But for many consumers, a tablet is a simple and elegant solution for core use cases that were previously addressed by the PC."
Jitesh Ubrani, research analyst for the Worldwide Quarterly Tablet Tracker, added: "Apple's success in the education market has proven that tablets can be used as more than just a content consumption or gaming device. These devices are learning companions, and as tablet prices continue to drop, the dream of having a PC for every child gets replaced with the reality that we can actually provide a tablet for every child."

Work restarts on MMO as developer makes large design and technology changes to game
Blizzard has reduced the number of developers working on its long in development MMO Project Titan to 30 as work starts over on the title.
As reported by Venturebeat, the MMO previously had a team of 100 developers working on the project, but a source “familiar with that matter†has said 70 staff are now being reassigned to other work at the studio.
Work is now starting over on the game, and it is no longer expected to be released till 2016 at the earliest.
“We’ve always had a highly iterative development process, and the unannounced MMO is no exception,†read a statement from Blizzard spokesman Shon Damron.
“We’ve come to a point where we need to make some large design and technology changes to the game. We’re using this opportunity to shift some of our resources to assist with other projects while the core team adapts our technology and tools to accommodate these new changes. Note that we haven’t announced any dates for the MMO.â€

The Linux Mint blog today announced the full release of Linux Mint 15 'Olivia.' Here are the release notes and a list of new features. As before, it's available with either MATE or Cinnamon as a desktop environment. The included version of MATE has been upgrade to 1.6, which saw many old and deprecated packages replaced with newer technologies. Cinnamon has gone to 1.8, which improved the file manager, added support for 'desklets' (essentially desktop widgets), and completed the transition away from Gnome Control Center to Cinnamon's own settings panel. Other new features of Linux Mint 15 include improved login screen applications (one of which is an HTML greeter that supports HTML5, CSS, JavaScript, and WebGL), a tool developed from the ground up to manage software sources in Mint, and a vastly improved driver manager. The project's website sums it up simply: 'Linux Mint 15 is the most ambitious release since the start of the project.

A prosecutor has opened an investigation into how Facebook allowed the publication of insults and bullying postsaimed at 14-year-old Carolina Picchio, who took her own life after a gang of boys circulated a video on Facebook of her appearing drunk and disheveled in a bathroom at a party. The Italian Parents Association has filed a criminal complaint against Facebook for allegedly having a role in the instigation of Carolina's suicide. 'This is the first time a parents' group has filed such a complaint against Facebook in Europe,' said Antonio Affinita, the director. 'Italian law forbids minors under 18 signing contracts, yet Facebook is effectively entering into a contract with minors regarding their privacy, without their parents knowing.'

Epic boss Mark Rein has shouted down recent comments from EA regarding the technological merit of next-gen consoles.
Last week EA’s executive VP and CTO Rajat Taneja stated that: “Both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 have adopted electronics and an integrated systems-on-a-chip architecture that unleashes magnitudes more compute and graphics power than the current generation of consoles.
“These architectures are a generation ahead of the highest end PC on the market and their unique design of the hardware, the underlying operating system and the live service layer create one of the most compelling platforms to reimagine game mechanics.â€
However, as spotted by CVG Rein took to Twitter to challenge these accusations.
“No they’re not. I call bullshit on this one,†he asserted. "The article said 'highest-end PCs currently available' which isn't even close to true, it's miles away from true.
"They are ‘architecturally’ more advanced but performance levels aren't as good. Maybe that's what he meant?"

When we last got a peek at Windows 8.1 "Blue," most of the updates lurked under the surface: rumors of a Start button revival didn't pan out. Flash forward to Paul Thurrott's screenshots of a newer build, however, and it's a different story. The leaked code has the Start button once more occupying a spot on the desktop taskbar, with behavior reportedly like what we've seen with Stardock's Start 8 utility. More throwbacks also appear to be in store. Users can now transfer their desktop wallpaper to the Start screen, and the storied boot-to-desktop option is available -- if turned off by default. Microsoft hasn't acknowledged the existence of these (or any) Windows 8.1 features, but the rapidly approaching Build conference suggests that we'll learn more in the near future.

Microsoft's Surface Pro started shipping in the US back in February, but its rolloutelsewhere has been sporadic, and a 256GB model non-existent -- until now. Japanese customers lusting after the Intel Core i5-powered hybrid will be able to claim one on June 8th, priced at 99,800 yen ($975) with 128GB of storage. The new 256GB iteration will premiere on shelves there for 119,800 yen ($1,175), and customers there will be able to adorn it with the Touch Cover for 9,980 yen ($100) and tactile key Type Cover for 10,980 yen ($110). Better still, Microsoft will toss in its pressure-sensitive pen (and Office 2013) for all the versions as well -- just in time for you to finally do something useful with it.

AMD might not be able to keep up (down?) with Intel in the CPU power consumption race, so it's taking another tack with the new Opteron X-series: horsepower. It just announced the Opteron X1150 and X2150 64-bit processors for microservers, part of the Jaguar-codenamed family of CPUs arriving in the next-gen Xbox One and Sony PS4 consoles. Thanks to its ultra-low power 6-watt Atom S1200chips, Intel excels in the low-power server market, and at 9W and 11W respectively (minimum), AMD's CPUs consume considerably more juice. But AMD is pitching them as a better solution overall, thanks to those four cores (compared to two in the Atom), integrated AMD Radeon HD 8000 graphics on the X2150 model, support for 32GB of RAM and integrated SATA ports. AMD's chips are pricier, though, at $64 (X1150) or $99 (X2150) compared to $54 for Intel's Atom S1200 (all in quantities of 1,000). To top it off, Intel has new 64-bit Atom SoCs coming soon promising even lower power consumption -- possibly leaving AMD to play catch-up again.

Dota 2 developer Valve has detailed how its new communication ban system is turning its online multiplayer battler into a friendlier place.Last month Valve introduced the option to ban all communication with players who were abusive verbally or via text chat. The more low-tech alternative.
The move was part of a wider investigation by Valve into the reasons why people decided to stop playing. Player abuse was apparently the key factor - much more so than people just naturally failing and quitting. So the ban system was implemented as a way of notifying potty-mouthed players that their antics weren't appreciated."After some discussion internally, we reached the decision that it seemed in the best interest of the Dota community to not push away players who actually enjoyed the game," a new Valve blog post reads."As a consequence, this meant restricting the ability for some members of the community to say whatever they want. To put it another way, we only want people to quit playing if they actually just don't like the game."Four weeks later and the ban system's effects are already apparent. There's been a 35 per cent drop in negative communication and 60 per cent of players who receive bans go on to modify their behaviour and don't receive a further warning.

Ahead of the Shadow Warrior reinvention, publisher Devolver Digital is giving away the original 1997 shooter for free on Steam. The controversial 3D Realms game, which used the same engine as Duke Nukem 3D, was originally going for free for a "limited time." However, according to the official Shadow Warrior Twitter account it's staying free-to-play "forever."
Devolver Digital and Flying Wild Hog's Shadow Warrior comeback is due on PC this fall, and on next-gen consoles (as yet unspecified) next year. We recently caught up with lead writer Jan Bartkowicz to see how the modern Shadow Warrior will compare to the original.

Leaked builds of Microsoft's upcoming Windows 8.1 indicate that the platform's trademark Start button will make a return.
Screenshots of the update, which is currently known as the "Milestone Preview" internally, were obtained by ZDNet and reveal what looks to be a redesigned Start button, located in the bottom left corner of the screen.
However, reports indicate that even if the humble Start does make its way back into Microsoft's flagship operating system, it won't fulfil the purpose it historically has.
If true, and the Start button no longer opens the OS' Start Menu, the purpose of the button remains entirely unclear. It's also understood that whilst the button will be enabled by default, users will retain the option to disable it.

Image from ZDNet In addition to these changes, the Start button has undergone an aesthetic update too, now sporting the new stylised Windows logo used by Microsoft.
The Milestone Preview has also shed some light on a host of other addition that Windows 8.1 could introduce, including an option for users to boot their system directly to the desktop, bypassing the Metro Start screen.
An official public preview of Windows 8.1 is set to be showcased by Microsoft at the firm's Build 2013 show on June 26th.

Ars Technica has taken a look at Microsoft's newly released preview of Windows 8.1. As widely rumored, the point releasefeatures a clamored-for concession to Windows users who rankled at the loss of Windows' Start button in the taskbar. In addition to various tweaks to 8's search capabilities and icon presentation, says the article, "Some of Windows 8's obvious limitations are being lifted. In 8.1, Metro apps can be run on multiple monitors simultaneously. On any single monitor, more than two applications can be run simultaneously. Instead of Windows 8's fixed split, where one application gets 320 pixels and the other application gets the rest, the division between apps will be variable. It'll also be possible to have multiple windows from a single app so that, for example, two browser windows can be opened side-by-side." Similar reports on these changes at Wired, Engadget, and SlashCloud.

We've already seen a couple of new desktop GTX cards from NVIDIA this month, and if the mysterious spec sheet for MSI's GT70 Dragon Edition 2 laptop wasn't enough of a hint, the company's got some notebook variants to let loose, too. The GeForce GTX 700M series, officially announced today, is a quartet of chips built on the Kepler architecture. At the top of the stack is the GTX 780M, which NVIDIA claims is the "world's fastest notebook GPU," taking the title from AMD's Radeon HD 8970M. For fans of the hard numbers, the 780M has 1,536 CUDA cores, an 823MHz base clock speed and memory configs of up to 4GB of 256-bit GDDR5 -- in other words, not a world apart from a desktop card. Whereas the 780M's clear focus is performance, trade-offs for portability and affordability are made as you go down through the 770M, 765M and 760M. Nevertheless, the 760M is said to be 30 percent faster than itspredecessor, and the 770M 55 percent faster.
All of the chips feature NVIDIA's GPU Boost 2.0 and Optimus technologies, and work with the GeForce Experience game auto-settings utility. The 700M series should start showing up in a host of laptops soon, and a bunch of OEMs have already pledged their allegiance. Check out a video with NVIDIA's Mark Avermann after the break, where he shows off a range of laptops packing 700M GPUs, and helps us answer the most important question of all: can it run Crysis? (Or, in this case, Crysis 3.)

Razer has bolstered its Blade range of gaming notebooks with the addition of two new devices.
First up is the 14-inch Razer Blade, which is a welcome change to the current line-up of gaming orientated devices.
Whilst most gaming devices tend to be hulking behemoths, the 14-inch Blade is designed offer viable gaming performance without the excessive size.
The device is set to benefit from Intel's soon-to-be-released Haswell CPU, along with 8GB of RAM and a GeForce GTX 765M GPU with 2GB of dedicated RAM to power the latex titles' graphics.
However, the miniature frame comes at a cost, with the device offered just a 1600 x 900 resolution display instead of the 1080p featured in its full-sized brothers.
Priced at $1,799, the device is likely to rival high-end devices such as Apple's MacBook Pro and will certainly appeal to gamers looking to play on the move.
In addition to this, Razer is unleashing a rebooted edition of its Razer Blade Pro device, which measures in at 17.3 inches.
Whilst packing similar specs to the 14-inch Blade, the Pro also sports a 128GB SSD as standard, with upgrade options to both 256GB and 512GB available.
The Razer Pro also incorporates the Switchblade trackpad and buttons, which allows user to completely configure their setup for different games.
Priced at $2,299, the device offers a slight boost to performance for a pretty hefty price tag.
