When night falls in the free-to-play shooter Battlefield Heroes, out come the creatures of the night with the addition of new vampires and werewolves to the web-based multiplayer shooter.
Ripped from today's young adult fiction—or, if you prefer, a handful of Underworld films and decades of fantasy—the Battlefield Heroes war takes a turn for the supernatural with a month-long special event. Battlefield Heroes players can purchase all-new outfits and items that will transform the deceased from the Nationals side into vampires, the freshly dead Royals into lycanthropes.
And you can do it on three maps reworked to be 100% spookier with nighttime settings. To get yourself properly pumped up for Battlefield Heroes' foray into the fang war, watch this new trailer for the Vampires Vs. Werewolves event.

Turbine has detailed the next Book update to The Lord of the Rings Online. This takes the MMO version of the Tolkien saga into Volume III: Allies of the King with Book 1: Oath of the Rangers.
Four Skirmishes will be added at Dol Guldur, the fortress from last year's Siege of Mirkwood mini-expansion. They'll be playable in a new 12-person mode. There'll be an additional Skirmish called the Depths of Nûrz Ghâshu as well.
The level cap for crafted items will be increased to 65, and a new epic quest line involves marshalling Rangers scattered across the Northlands to meet the shadow spreading over Middle-Earth.
There's no word on a release date for the Book update yet, other than "soon".

With the Star Trek Online servers opening for pre-ordering players today, and the game's official launch next week, Cryptic has detailed its plans for the space MMO in its first two months.
The launch-day patch is relatively small - a major update was made a week ago, just before the end of open beta - but Cryptic is already planning the first major content update for the game.
"We're already working on it and it’ll be out before you know it," producer Craig Zinkievich said in his recent state of the game post. More player-versus-player options, exploration missions for the Klingon factions, more ground-based "fleet actions" (Star Trek Online's equivalent of large-scale public quests), extended ship customisation and extra playable species are promised.
Beyond that update, Cryptic will be looking to flesh out high-level content with major missions involving the Borg, one of these also featuring Q and a spot of time travel. It's also planning Raid Episodes - tough five-man missions aimed at max-level players, and accessible to both Federation and Klingon characters. Raid Episodes will be released "every few weeks", beginning a week after launch.
Further plans include additions to the Klingon side of the game - fleet actions, a new ship, more PvE content - and Federation-versus-Federation PvP.
Cryptic stirred up some controversy among players by introducing a cap to the number of skill points late in open beta, meaning top-level players could no longer max out all of their skills in the endgame. Although this simply brings it in line with standard MMO design, requiring some specialisation from players, the change has disappointed many.
Star Trek Online is released on 5th February for PC. For those who've pre-ordered the game, early access begins at 6pm GMT tonight. If you're looking for someone to play with, you might want to consider the fledgling Eurogamer Star Alliance: find out more in the Star Trek Online forum thread and Star Trek Online group folder.

Trailrunner7 writes to mention that a new program from Google could pay security researchers $500 for every security bug found in Chromium. Of course if you find a particularly clever bug you could be eligible for a $1337 reward.
"Today, we are introducing an experimental new incentive for external researchers to participate. We will be rewarding select interesting and original vulnerabilities reported to us by the security research community. For existing contributors to Chromium security — who would likely continue to contribute regardless — this may be seen as a token of our appreciation. In addition, we are hoping that the introduction of this program will encourage new individuals to participate in Chromium security. The more people involved in scrutinizing Chromium's code and behavior, the more secure our millions of users will be. Such a concept is not new; we'd like to give serious kudos to the folks at Mozilla for their long-running and successful vulnerability reward program."

EA Sports this morning revealed FIFA Online, a free-to-play, web-based PC title "aimed at football fans, not just gamers".
The title, which goes into closed beta next month with open beta kicking-off in the summer, was unveiled to journalists by EA Sports top dog Peter Moore, at an event held at third-rate Premier League stadium Stamford Bridge.
FIFA Online uses the FIFA 10 engine and takes advantage of the full FIFA database, including content for the forthcoming World Cup title, covering 30 licensed leagues, 500 teams and 15,000 players. Three game modes will feature - World Cup, League and Versus - plus a simple 'mouse-play' control for n00bs and "adaptable difficulty".
Moore said that while FIFA already reached 10 million gamers, he wanted to snag more of the 2 billion global football audience, and FIFA Online would appeal to those who can't afford a console or an HDTV, and don't have a top-spec PC. The game has been built to run on "average spec laptops".
The publisher hopes to build a big online community and promised events linked to real matches. "It's a living game," according to line producer Aaron Blunt, and "critical to the growth of EA Sports," in Moore's words.
Moore said his ambition was for everyone be able to have "a sports experience regardless of platform or budget". Hopefully one a bit better than his experience as a Liverpool fan this season.
FIFA Online's open beta is scheduled for June.

Google has announced that it added several new security features to Chrome 4, including two security measures first popularized (some later shot down as having 'zero impact') by rival Microsoft's IE8 last year. The newest 'stable' build of Chrome includes five security additions that target Web developers who want to build more secure sites, said Adam Barth, a software engineer on the Chrome team. The two aped from IE include 'X-Frame-Options'" a security feature that helps sites defend against 'clickjacking' attacks, and cross-site scripting protection.'"In Google Chrome 4, we've added an experimental feature to help mitigate one form of XSS [cross-site scripting], reflective XSS,' Barth said. 'The XSS filter checks whether a script that's about to run on a Web page is also present in the request that fetched that Web page. If the script is present in the request, that's a strong indication that the Web server might have been tricked into reflecting the script.

Consumer complaints about notebooks and tablet PCs rose 42 per cent last year, despite a drop in the overall number of calls received from disgruntled customers.
Government body Consumer Direct said total complaints dropped 2.8 per cent last year, and second hand cars came top of the list for the fourth year running.
While laptops and tablets only came fifth, they recorded the highest increase of any category, from 12,395 calls and emails in 2008 to 17,611 last year – a rise of 42.1 per cent.
The news comes as some of the biggest names in computing move into the tablet sphere. Apple yesterday announced its long-awaited tablet, the iPad, while Microsoft showed off a slate device at this year’s CES.
Televisions saw the second highest rise in complaints, up 9.2 per cent from 2008 to 22,184.
David Fisher, director of Consumer Direct said: “While total complaint levels dropped slightly in 2009, complaints about some goods such as laptops and TVs rose significantly. In some cases, this may reflect growing sales for particular products rather than a higher percentage of faulty goods or services. Overall demand for consumer advice remains high, and our national service helps consumers to assert their rights and get the refunds, repairs and replacements they deserve.”
According to the report, more than half of all complaints related to goods and services bought at the traders' premises, 13 per cent were about internet purchases and 10 per cent about telephone transactions.
Top 10 consumer gripes:
1. Second hand cars purchased from independent dealers
2. TVs
3. Mobile phones (service agreements)
4. Mobile phones (hardware)
5. Laptops, notebooks and tablet PCs
6. Car repairs and servicing from independent garages
7. Second hand cars purchased from franchise dealers
8. Upholstered furniture
9. Women’s clothing
10. Telephone services (landline)

For a game in a series with such a long history, and such a passionate fanbase, Command & Conquer 4 has been humming along under most people's radars. Something that should change pretty soon once the beta kicks off.
C&C4's community manager has posted on his Twitter account "C&C 4 beta will be going PUBLIC very soon, every RTS fan in the world can give CNC 4 MP a test-drive".
With the game due out in March, "very soon" really does mean "very soon". Good to hear it's a public beta, too, so everyone (not just those pre-ordering the game) can get in on the action.

Distributor says Brits have not been as fast as the Continent in abandoning traditional devices
The UK has been slow to take up multi-function printers, but this could change as prices drop, a distributor has said.
Micro-P’s printer product specialist, Phil Miller, told PCR that Brits have been behind the continent in moving away from traditional printers.
“The UK has been slow to adopt the transition from single function to multifunction printers in the home and small business, compared to our European counterparts,” he said, adding that he expects to see “a further significant increase as the price of multi-function printers continues to fall.”
Many vendors are prepared for this turnaround. Canon’s recent sales data already reflects the growing trend of multi-function devices, showing that they are now more popular than standalone printers. Meanwhile, Kodak is so confident that the future lies in integrated printer-scanners that it no longer produces single- function machines.

January 27th, 2010, 16:49 Posted By: wraggster
Ubisoft is to start using a new system of authentication for its PC titles - a move which it hopes will cut piracy and prove more popular than the controversial StarForce digital rights management application previously implemented.
Using the new authentication measures, users will be required to connect to a Ubi.com account before each play session.
While this means an internet connection is always required, the upshot of the system, according to Ubisoft, is that games can be run without a disc in the drive for authentication and can be installed on an unlimited number of computers while save files are stored remotely on Ubisoft servers, allowing access to them from any machine.
"If you own a hundred PCs, you can install your games on a hundred PCs," Brent Wilkinson, Ubisoft director of customer service and production planning told GameSpy.
He added that the company expected most people to be "fine" with the system's need to be online in order to play games. "Most people are always connected to an internet connection," he said.
Last year, Ubisoft filed a lawsuit against a company hired to produce discs for the PC version of Assassin's Creed, claiming a leak of the code led to 700,000 illegitimate downloads and millions of pounds in lost revenue.
PC piracy is cannibalising the PC market, Ubisoft Shanghai creative director Michael de Plater has claimed previously, citing it as Ubisoft's reason for releasing the PC version of Tom Clancy's EndWar after console versions.
"At the moment, if you release the PC version, essentially what you're doing is letting people have a free version that they rip off instead of a purchased version. Piracy's basically killing PC," he said.
"You know, the level of piracy that you get with the PC just cannibalises the others, because people just steal that version."

Most iPhone users would be interested in netbook-sized touch device from Apple
A quarter of desktop users and almost a third of notebook users are very interested in having a touchscreen interface on their PCs, research has found.
The survey by Canalys asked over 4,000 computer and mobile phone users in several countries to rate their interest in touchscreen technology on a scale of one to ten.
Overall, 26 per cent of home desktop users and 32 per cent of laptop and netbook users said their interest was at nine or ten, ten being the highest.
“Previous attempts at bringing tablet PCs to the mass market failed for a multitude of reasons,” said Canalys senior analyst Daryl Chiam. “They were typically expensive, heavy and the pen-driven user interfaces were not seamlessly integrated into the whole user experience. Critically, they lacked compelling applications. Outside of a few occupational niches they brought little benefit. But user expectations and experience, and the underlying technologies, have moved on and it is time for the industry to try again.”
According to the firm, consumers who have owned a large number of mobile phones, and have therefore been exposed to various user interfaces, are more receptive to the idea of touchscreens on portable PCs.
iPhone users did not, however, show a markedly higher interest in having a touchscreen on a desktop or laptop, but 61 per cent displayed a strong interest in having one on a netbook-size device. This suggests that should apple launch a touch-enabled computer, such as its rumoured tablet, it would have a ready-made customer base
Canalys analyst Tim Shepherd said: “Having an integrated application, content and service delivery model will be vital to the proposition of this new generation of tablets and touch-screen PCs. Many vendors will find this a challenge, but users have come to expect this now. It was missing from previous attempts at transforming PC user behaviour, but it will make the difference between success and failure this time around.”

Fresh off copying from Xbox Live with its "Uplay" service, Ubisoft is now taking a leaf out Valve's book (The Big Book of Steam), introducing a range of new anti-piracy measures for the company's PC games.
Ditching the controversial "StarForce" system of digital rights management, Ubisoft will now be moving its PC game copy protection services to Ubi.com accounts.
This new system will allow unlimited installs (rather than the limits seen on other DRM systems like SecuRom), let you play games without a disc in the drive, and even save your games remotely to Ubi's servers, meaning you can swap between computers and pick up right where you left off (similar to how Valve's Steamworks system operates).
The catch? You have to be online to play your games. It's the only way you'll be able to verify with Ubisoft's servers that you're playing a legitimate copy of a game. So if you get intermittent internet connectivity, or travel a lot, or just like playing games on your laptop, you're in trouble, as no "offline" mode will be offered.
It's a brave decision on the part of Ubisoft, one even Valve may still be a few years away from making. Be interesting to see how severe a backlash there is from users, or whether the company has made the right call in deciding most people are 100% connected to the internet 100% of the time.

i_want_you_to_throw_ sends in a Tech Radar piece about the various portable Linux distributions, focusing on operating systems like Android, Chrome OS, and Ubuntu Netbook Remix. The article compares the distributions designed for similar purposes and discusses where they will likely go in the future.
"As UNR is built on Ubuntu, it's highly likely that we'll see almost as many UNR respins as we have for the parent distribution. We've already seen one example in Jolicloud, and we'd put money on many community distributions, such as Linux Mint or Crunchbang offering a UNR overhaul alongside their standard desktop installations. It's also likely that Canonical will be able to forge stronger relationships with companies like Dell, which is already shipping a specific version of UNR on its Mini 9 platform. As Windows XP is phased out and the cost of bundling Windows 7 rises, manufacturers will be looking for a cheap and easily maintainable netbook OS, and UNR fits the bill admirably.

New MMO onslaught set for 2010 will not unseat Blizzard's Warcraft, says online giants
MMO specialists have told MCV that predicting the fall of World of Warcraft is ‘futile’.
Blizzard’s title is the world’s most lucrative MMO, raking in over $100 million a month.
And rival developers admit that even when there are some big name MMOs on the horizon – such as Star Wars: The Old Republic, APB, DC Universe Online and Star Trek Online – none of them will beat Warcraft’s huge installed base.
“No game will topple World of Warcraft,” commented Cryptic Studios’ COO Jack Emmert.
“Many companies try to replicate Warcraft’s gameplay, but that’s just silly. If someone wants WoW, they’ll play WoW.”
Funcom’s director of communications Erling Ellingsen added: “The game has proven to be incredibly resilient against the test of time, not only because it’s a great game but also because it’s turned into somewhat of a pop-cultural phenomenon.
“Predicting success or failure in the MMO segment is dangerous, but I think it’s safe to say that World of Warcraft will be around for a long time. Based on the numbers reported by Blizzard so far, it will probably take a while before their subscriber level falls significantly.”
Jagex COO Rob Smith agrees: “2010 will see the release of a number of hardcore space and science fiction MMOs such as Star Wars and Star Trek Online.
“These games are unlikely to topple the likes of World of Warcraft from their throne, at least in the short term.”
Blizzard is set to release a new World of Warcraft expansion into retail this year called Cataclysm.
The firm has told MCV it hopes the add-on will shake-up the Warcraft universe by refining the established game.
“We look at game development as an iterative process, and we’re continually polishing World of Warcraft and building on what we’ve done in the past,” the company’s production director J. Allen Brack told MCV.
“Just to give you one example: World of Warcraft: Cataclysm gave us an opportunity to go back to the game’s original zones and update them dramatically.
“Cataclysm is also shaking up the game in other ways, with new features and races added, altered landscapes, new zones, new professions, new dungeons, and new raids to ensure that the game offers all of our players something new and exciting.”

The Escapist's Shamus Young recently posted an article complaining about the proliferation of distribution platforms and social networks for video games. None of the companies who make these are "quite sure how games will be sold and played ten years from now," he writes, "but they all know they want to be the ones running the community or selling the titles." Young continues,
"Remember how these systems usually work: The program sets itself up to run when Windows starts, and it must be running if you want to play the game. If you follow this scheme to its logical conclusion, you'll see that the system tray of every gaming PC would eventually end up clogged with loaders, patchers, helpers, and monitors. Every publisher would have a program for serving up content, connecting players, managing digital licenses, performing patches, and (most importantly) selling stuff. Some people don't mind having 'just one more' program running in the background. But what happens when you have programs from Valve, Stardock, Activision, 2k Games, Take-Two, Codemasters, Microsoft, Eidos, and Ubisoft? Sure, you could disable them. But then when you fire the thing up to play a game, it will want to spend fifteen minutes patching itself and the game before it will let you in. And imagine how fun it would be juggling accounts for all of them."

In a case that has been winding its way through the courts for a while now, a Wisconsin prison banned inmates from playing Dungeons & Dragons, using the justification that 'one player is denoted the Dungeon Master... [who] is tasked with giving directions to other players... [which] mimics the organization of a gang.' The prison also cited some sparse evidence that a handful of non-inmate D&D players once committed some crimes that allegedly were related to their D&D playing. On Monday the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the regulation (PDF) against challenges from inmates. The court appeared skeptical of the ban, sarcastically referring to it as the 'war on D&D,' but upheld it nonetheless as having a 'rational basis.' Law professor Ilya Somin suggests that the court may have had no choice, given how deferential rational-basis review usually is.

Finally, EA understands what it is we want out of our limited edition game bundles. Some extremely loseable keychains? Nope. A cat head-sized helmet which is awesome for roughly 23 minutes, then an eyesore shortly thereafter? Nope. In-game weapons and equipment which are useful as all-get-out, which also have the benefit of not taking up space in our real-life humble abodes? Ahh, now that's the ticket.
That's exactly what the limited edition of Battlefield: Bad Company 2 -- which is now available to pre-order through Steam -- is bringing to the table. The bundle includes six pieces of equipment, ranging from improved armor on the player's vehicles, to a magnetic dart gun which helps the player track targets. We've contacted DICE to find out if these bonuses will be available during the game's multiplayer portion. We'd hate to have a repeat of the original Bad Company's boycott shenanigans.

Joystiq's #2 game of 2009 is finally leaping onto PC on March 16. Ubisoft doesn't seem too apologetic about the four-month delay, pricing the game at $59.99 (a higher price usually reserved for console releases) for both retail and digital versions. However, the PC edition of Assassin's Creed II will act as a pseudo "director's cut" of the game, and it will include two upcoming DLC episodes, Battle of Forli and Bonfire of the Vanities.
In addition to the standard PC version, Ubisoft has announced a special "Black Edition" of Assassin's Creed II for $64.99. The press release is incredibly vague about what extras it may contain, simply referring to them as "additional content." An Ubisoft representative remained cryptic about the bonuses, too, promising a "reveal in February," which suggests that the content could differ from the "Black Edition" released on consoles.

Google just pushed an update to the stable channel of Chrome on Windows, bringing support for extensions and bookmark syncing to everyone who isn't living on the bleeding edge of Chrome.
The major features in this release (officially labeled 4.0.249.78—uh, we'll just call it 4.0):
Extensions
Bookmark sync
Enhanced developer tools
HTML5: Notifications, Web Database, Local Storage, WebSockets, Ruby support
v8 performance improvements
Skia performance improvements
Full ACID3 pass, due to re-enabled remote font support (with added defense against bugs in operating system font libraries)
HTTP byte range support
New security feature: "Strict Transport Security" support
Experimental new anti-reflected-XSS feature called "XSS Auditor"
They've also pushed out a handful of security fixes, listed on the Chrome Releases blog post. Google's spinning this release as adding "over 1,500 new features" to Chrome by virtue of the number of extensions already available to the Chrome community. This update isn't the final blow to Firefox or anything along those lines, but we can't help but think the folks at Mozilla would be a little worried. Extensions are a large part of what's set Firefox apart from Chrome, while Chrome has often out-paced Firefox in arenas like performance. As Chrome extensions hit the mainstream stable release, we could see a lot of people considering the switch.
Chrome 4.0.etc. is a free, stable release for Windows only.
