Microsoft plans to release an emergency patch for Internet Explorer very soon to counter targeted attacks and the publication of exploit code for a 'browse and you're owned' vulnerability in its flagship Web browser. The out-of-band update will be released once the company is satisfied that it has been properly tested against all affected versions of Windows. This could happen as early as this weekend."
Microsoft has downplayed the seriousness of the IE zero-day, and insisted that it affects only IE6 even as security researchers close in on exploits for IE7 and IE8. Microsoft has had no comment about the firestorm that Google unleashed by directly accusing the Chinese of cyber espionage. ShadowServer has up a sobering post on the massive extent of the problem of "groups that can be referred to as the Advanced Persistent Threat.

Massively is reporting that the South Korean Supreme Court has stated that virtual currency is the equivalent of real-world money. For those of you who might not be drawing the link, the core there is that selling in-game currency for real money is essentially just an exchange of currency and perfectly legal in South Korea. This could have sweeping implications for RMT operations the world over, not to mention free-to-play games and... well, online games in general. The official story is available online from JoongAng Daily.

Microsoft has issued a statement urging people to upgrade their browser to IE8, after the zero-day exploit that was used to attack companies such as Google went public. According to Microsoft's security advisory: 'the vulnerability exists as an invalid pointer reference within Internet Explorer. It is possible under certain conditions for the invalid pointer to be accessed after an object is deleted. In a specially-crafted attack, in attempting to access a freed object, Internet Explorer can be caused to allow remote code execution.' But, although IE6 has been the source of the attacks until now, Microsoft's advisory admits that both IE7 and IE8 are vulnerable to the same flaw, even on Windows 7.

HanbitSoft has scored the publishing rights for Hellgate in North America, Europe and Japan from Namco Bandai as was previously suggested. Hellgate's doors shut to the public early last year following the implosion of developer, Flagship Studios.
When Flagship closed the online portion of the game was suspended indefinitely in the relevant regions. Now that HanbitSoft has the worldwide publishing rights, you can expect to see the gates reopen in 2010 / 2011.
"We would like to thank Namco Bandai Games America for allowing us to acquire the Hellgate publishing rights and are thrilled to have eager gamers worldwide return and enjoy the franchise," said Kee-Young Kim, CEO of HanbitSoft, adding, "Hellgate: Resurrection is heading towards success in Korea such that we decided to push ahead with launching the game overseas next year. We will do our best to get the game to the fans as soon as possible."
Zack Karlsson, senior director of business development at Namco Bandai, said, "We are pleased to participate in the revitalization of Hellgate through this agreement and are deeply gratified to allow Hanbitsoft to take the lead on this franchise and bring this game to the people who seek it."
Over to you - do you remember the problems that hampered Hellgate in its early days? Were you a subscriber? Do you plan on going back?

France has echoed calls by the German government for web users to find an alternative to Microsoft's Internet Explorer (IE) to protect security.
Certa, a government agency that oversees cyber threats, warned against using all versions of the web browser.
Germany warned users on Friday after malicious code - implicated in attacks on Google - was published online.
But Microsoft told BBC News that IE8 was the "most secure browser on the market" and people should upgrade.
Cliff Evans, head of security and privacy, said that so far the firm had only seen malicious code that targeted the older version of its browser, IE6.
"The risk is minimal," he said.
For a web user to be affected, he said, they would have to be using IE6 and visit a compromised website.
"There are very few of them out there," he told BBC News.
However, if this did occur, a PC could become infected with a "trojan horse", allowing a hacker to take control of the computer and potentially steal sensitive information.
'Sophisticated attack'
Although the vulnerability has so far been exploited only in IE6, security researchers warned that could soon change.
"Microsoft themselves admit there is a vulnerability, even in IE8," said Graham Cluley of security firm Sophos.
This terrible piece of PR for Microsoft comes just as the IE browser which had almost total control of the market starts to come under pressure...
Rory Cellan-Jones, BBC technology correspondent
Has China helped Google in the browser wars?
Mr Cluley said that because details of the exploit were now available online, hackers could soon change the code to target other versions of the browser.
He warned web users to be careful about clicking on links in unsolicited e-mails and advised all web users to upgrade their browser to the latest version, no matter which software they used.
The advice follows revelations that a "targeted and sophisticated" attack on Google exploited the vulnerability.
Google said last week that an attack on its corporate network had targeted the e-mail accounts of human rights activists.
The attack led Google to announce that it might withdraw from China, after it revealed that the attacks had probably originated in the country.
Following the news, Germany's Federal Office for Information Security issued a warning against all versions of Internet Explorer and recommended that users switch to an alternative such as Firefox or Google's Chrome.
The French agency Certa issued a similar warning.
"Pending a patch from the publisher, Certa recommends using an alternative browser," it said.
The UK government had said that it would not issue a similar warning. However, it said the Centre for the Protection of National Infrastructure (CPNI)was "monitoring the situation" and would "publish further advice if the risks change".
Patch path
But Mr Evans said that calls to change browsers were "not very helpful".
"If you look at other browsers, it's likely they will have other vulnerabilities," he said.
The vulnerability was found to be used in an attack on Google
He pointed to a report by security firm NSS Labs reportedly showing that IE8 provided better security against phishing and malware than other browsers.
"We feel strongly that IE8 is most secure browser on the market," Mr Evans said.
His advice was echoed by Mr Cluley.
"Switching away will get away from this particular problem," he told BBC News. "But all browsers have security flaws."
Mr Cluley said that switching away from IE could create other problems, particularly for companies.
"Some web-based applications may not work at all if you're not using Internet Explorer."
Microsoft is currently working on a patch for the problem, but a spokesperson said it could not commit to a timeframe.
The firm traditionally releases a security update once a month - the next scheduled patch will be ready on 9 February.

Vigile points out yesterday's launch of
"the new AMD Radeon HD 5670, the first graphics card to bring DirectX 11 support to the sub-$100 market and offer next-generation features to almost any budget. The Redwood part (as it was codenamed) is nearly 3.5x smaller in die size than the first DX11 GPUs from AMD while still offering support for DirectCompute 5.0, Eyefinity multi-monitor gaming and of course DX11 features (like tessellation) in upcoming Windows gaming titles. Unfortunately, performance on the card is not revolutionary even for the $99 graphics market, though power consumption has been noticeably lowered while keeping the card well cooled in a single-slot design."

Cryptic has announced some special Star Trek Online subscription options for anyone planning to sink some serious time into the game. The company is selling a lifetime subscription to the game for $239.99, which will last however long the game does. Also included with the lifetime subscription is a playable Borg character and two extra character slots. If you're not quite that devoted, you can opt for a 12-month subscription for $119.99, which also includes two extra character slots.
Big Download notes that regular subscriptions range from $14.99 per month, $41.97 for three months or $77.94 for six months, so the 12-month subscription is substantially cheaper than the $155.88 it would cost for two six-month subscriptions. Remember that the 12-month and lifetime subscriptions are available only for pre-orders, so you'll have to put some money down if you want to save money in the future.
As for whether you'll actually still be playing it in the future, you'll just have to wait and see. Or you could use a tachyon pulse. That works too.

Under its original plans, Mozilla would roll out Firefox 3.6 and 3.7 over the course of 2009, each bringing minor improvements to the browser. However, a steady stream of delays to Firefox 3.6 has rendered that goal unobtainable, forcing Mozilla to rethink its release. As a result, Firefox 3.7 has been dropped and will be replaced with feature updates for Firefox 3.6 that will be rolled out with security updates. This should free up the team to work on the next major release, Firefox 4, slated for the last quarter of 2010, which is expected to follow the same development process

June's release of The Sims 3 bested World of Warcraft for the crown of 2009's best selling PC game, according to numbers released today by the NPD Group. Modern Warfare 2, despite a November release, was a strong fifth.
Dragon Age: Origins also saw a November release and also made the top 10, at No. 9. It was one of five games from 2009 to do so in a sector where titles have a longer sales lifespan than on consoles.
Clarification: This analysis covers retail boxed copies only; it does not account for digital sales.
Warcraft's Wrath of the Lich King expansion was the second place finisher; the franchise's Battle Chest remained a reliable seller at No. 4, and the five-year-old original version of the game is still No. 6.
Sega's Empire: Total War, at No. 10, was the only game not published by Activision or Electronic Arts to make the top 10 in retail boxed sales.
Overall, NPD reported that retail PC game revenues dropped 23 percent in 2009 from their 2008 totals. Michael Gallagher, the president of the Entertainment Software Assocation, countered that 2009 was the highest grossing sales year ever on record for the games industry.
The top 10 PC selling games of 2009 were:
1. The Sims 3
2. World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King Expansion Pack
3. The Sims 2 Double Deluxe
4. World of Warcraft: Battle Chest
5. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
6. World of Warcraft Blizzard Entertainment
7. The Sims 3: World Adventures Expansion Pack
8. Spore
9. Dragon Age: Origins
10. Empire: Total War

This next item's for any rogue states out there that might be planning a comprehensive wave of cyber-attacks: It looks like Microsoft has admitted that indeed it was a security flaw in Internet Explorer that hackers based in China exploited in the recent attacks on Google. As is often the case, the flaw is neatly summed up in the title of the advisory: "Vulnerability in Internet Explorer could allow remote code execution." According to news agency AFP, the incident (which targeted Chinese human rights activists) shows "a level of sophistication above that of typical, isolated cyber criminal efforts." (Which is, evidently, how we like to think of our own cyber criminal efforts.) Microsoft has yet to release a formal software update. In the meantime, if you think your machine could be at risk, hit the source link for all the details. Or just switch to Firefox.

DICE has told Eurogamer there is "no profit" made from forcing Battlefield: Bad Company 2 players to rent dedicated servers instead of building their own.
Producer Gordon Van Dyke said files the community needs to build dedicated servers are being withheld in order to "protect the game's integrity on PC".
"This does not earn DICE a profit," BFBC2 Van Dyke told us. "But we will see where the game goes and support it post launch."
Right now the only way to host a private dedicated server is by renting from one of DICE's authorised hosts. These, Van Dyke added, have already been picked in "all major regions of the world".
This is a first for the Battlefield series, as Battlefield 2 and Battlefield 2142 both supported community members building and hosting their own dedicated servers.
DICE had made much of Battlefield: Bad Company 2's dedicated server support after Infinity Ward decided to go peer-to-peer with Modern Warfare 2 on PC.
Battlefield: Bad Company 2 goes into PC beta testing later this month, starting 28th January and ending 25th February.
The full game's out on 5th March.

A Facebook group has been set up to petition Valve to develop Counter-Strike 2.
The group, which you can find here, wishes to 'save the best FPS in history from fading away'.
Organiser Sam England told CVG today:
"I am sure we will be able to make history here, if we keep it up. Let's keep the best FPS in history alive."
The group hit 300 members this week.
Who knows? Valve might just take a look. So long as they're not too busy winning awards, that is.

The first inklings of a public Windows 7 SP1 beta program are beginning to emerge, with hidden registry keys and a leaked list of post-RTM build numbers surfacing on the Web. 'Beyond the obvious bug fixes and security patches, we'll no doubt see support for the new USB 3.0 standard. Likewise, enhancements to the Bluetooth and Wi-Fi stacks will be slipstreamed in, allowing Windows 7 to retain its mantle as the most easily configured version ever,' writes InfoWorld's Randall Kennedy. 'But perhaps the most significant "update" to come out of Service Pack 1 will be the fact that it exists at all, and that by delivering it to market Microsoft will be signaling that it is now OK for IT shops to pull the trigger on their Windows 7 deployments

Quote:
1.0.0-beta2 (2010-01-05)
