While we chew our nails in quiet desperation for StarCraft II, let's see what's going on in that Command & Conquer: Tiberian Twilight (we love you, Edward!) game, with a new trailer for the fourth installment. In Tiberian Twilight (we love you, Jacob!), which releases March 16, it appears that players will fetch tiberium from landing zones, which they'll turn in for upgrades and vehicles of destruction -- the tiberium, not the landing zones ... turning in LZs would be absurd ... yeah, um ...
*tap, tap, tap*
Okay, now where's StarCraft II?

gunhouse writes to let us know that, following a leaked internal build over the weekend, Opera Software has now released their official 10.5 pre-alpha. There are no Linux versions yet. And an anonymous reader adds,
"Opera's 10.5 pre-alpha includes the Carakan JavaScript Engine. Benchmarks now show that Opera is competitive with Chrome, beating it in Sunspider and other tests. Safari, Firefox, and IE are all behind. This is still pre-alpha, so further speed gains should be expected

According to this article at IT Expert Voice, Windows 7 and IPv6: Useful at Last?, we've had so many predictions that this will be 'the year of IPv6' that most of us have stopped listening. But the network protocol may have new life breathed into it because IPv6 is a requirement for DirectAccess. DirectAccess, a feature in Windows 7, makes remote access a lot easier — and it doesn't require a VPN. (Lisa Vaas interviews security experts and network admins to find out what they think of that idea.) The two articles examine the advantages and disadvantages of DirectAccess, with particular attention to the possibility that Microsoft's sponsorship may give IPv6 the deployment push it has lacked

Between now and Jan 1st 2010, Thirteen1, the entirely free-to-read web-based gaming magazine, are giving away 50 beta keys for Cryptic's highly anticipated upcoming MMORPG, Star Trek Online.
Already set to be one of most popular games of 2010, Star Trek Online is finally bringing the much loved Star Trek franchise to the MMO space, with gamers and “trekkies” falling over each other in a bid to get their hands on early access. From Dec 21st to Jan 1st, Thirteen1 will be randomly giving 45 keys away through their twitter page, with another 5 up for grabs in their community forum.
How it works
When Thirteen1 makes a tweet announcing an open window of opportunity, you will have 3 hours to go to their website via the tweeted link and enter both your e-mail & Twitter name. After the 3 hours are up, Thirteen1 will automatically pick a winner and announce it on their Twitter feed. Opportunities to win beta access are scheduled to be randomly “tweeted” from 5pm GMT on Dec 21st, with up to 5 chances to win every day until Jan 1st.
Once you have entered, you will be automatically entered into the draw for every window of opportunity – meaning 1 entry puts you into all 45 draws! (Christmas is a busy time, after all)
However, if you want to increase your chances of winning, you can enter your details every time a new window opens and multiply your chances of getting beta access.
In addition to the twitter giveaway, Thirteen1 will also be giving 5 keys away through their community forum. All you have to do is tell them why you deserve a key here - http://www.thirteen1.com/forum/index.php?topic=4182
Thirteen1 did this for Cryptic's other recent MMORPG, Champions Online, and some of the entries were fantastic. The best 5 posts will each get beta entry to Star Trek Online.
TIP – Be original and catch the eye of the judges. A daft video or a picture always goes down well!
Follow Thirteen1 on Twitter for a chance to win now - http://www.twitter.com/Thirteen1mag
Good luck!
Want to win a massive bundle of awesome games and merchandise? Dive into the free-to-read December issue of Thirteen1 and enter their special Christmas competition now - http://www.thirteen1.com/Issues/mag.php
The issue also features a round-up of the best games of the year, a countdown of the best christmassy locations to ever feature in games, exclusive interviews with Star Trek Online & The Secret World and much, much more.

Electronic Arts today announced they have teamed up to encourage people to donate unwanted items to one of the the charity’s 600 shops across the country. In exchange, they will receive a 10 per cent discount off their next purchase from www.eastore.co.uk, EA’s direct PC download service. The promotion will run from 27 December 2009 until 27 February 2010,
As well as computer games, the campaign urges people to donate unwanted Christmas presents, clothes and accessories to Cancer Research UK shops. Profits from these will help fund research into a disease which affects more than one in three people at some point in their lives.
Shane Bellamy from EA Store™ said: “We’re really excited to be launching this collaborative campaign. The post Christmas period is renowned for the amount of unwanted gifts and other items that are thrown out. Instead it’s so easy to donate them to Cancer Research UK’s worthy cause and get discounted access to some of the best of EA’s PC games along the way.”
Simon Ledsham, Cancer Research UK’s trading director, said: “Each bag of items donated to our shops can be worth up to £30 for the charity. So campaigns like this are really important to us – donations from the public are the lifeblood of our shops. What’s great about this campaign is that people can donate, feel good about giving to charity, but get something back for themselves with the EA Store voucher too.”

Tales Runner is an exciting fast]paced social fantasy game that surprises everyone with each new update. gQuigs notes a graph up at StatCounter Global Statistics, which shows that in the last few days Firefox 3.5 became the most used browser version worldwide, edging ahead of IE7. IE8 is rising fast (along with Windows 7), but over the last few months the slope of Firefox's worldwide curve has been steeper. (In the US, IE8 has always been ahead of Firefox 3.5; in Europe Firefox has led since late summer.) The submitter suggests using the time when Firefox rules the roost, globally speaking, to put the final nail in the coffin of IE6, which still has a 14% global share (5%-7% in the US and EU; China and Korea are holding up IE6's numbers).

Pushover is a free remake of the classic game Pushover, from Ocean.

Version 0.0.2 has been released. This release features internationalisation (translations for German are complete, Russian and Czech translations are available butincomplete), graphic replacements for 4 out of 9 themes, original music for 5 out of 9 themes.
We also created 6 new levels in the A&V levelset.
There are some small fixes to the game mechanics that makes the game behave nearly identical to the original
I hopefully fixed an endian problem with the graphics loader
We still need an artist that can recreate the graphics for the ant. So if you think that that could be fun to do, please contact me. I have prepared everything to make it as easy as possible.
Also if you want to translate the texts of Pushover you can contact me. We are using the FreeSans true type font. So as long as you use only glyphs within that font (and stay with left to right writing) there is no problem. If you want right to left text I will need your assistance to program that.

PC gaming - will it finally die in 2010? No. C'mon, stop already with that. Sure, 2009 had its ups and downs, PC gaming is very much alive and maybe looking healthier than ever in 2010.
Blizzard will, we hope, stick to its early 2010 release date for StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty, the first entry in the planned real-time strategy trilogy. And the publisher developer is threatening to release two titles next year, including the third World of Warcraft expansion, Cataclysm.
But 2010 cannot survive on Blizzard alone. Blizzard and Valve? Maybe, but beyond more Left 4 Dead 2 and Team Fortress 2 content, we're not sure what to expect. Episode III? Let's not set ourselves up for disappointment.
Thankfully, there are many strong contenders due in the following year, including highly anticipated MMOs like Star Wars: The Old Republic, DC Universe Online, Star Trek Online and APB, to name but a few. So let's take a look at what's will be pushing PCs to their limits in 2010, starting right now.
Note: We'll be looking at every platform's currently announced and estimated 2010 slate over the course of the rest of the week-and much much more.

Tatooine. A harsh, desert planet, filled with hives of scum and villainy. A place where it is nearly impossible to find the droids you are looking for, and the latest planet to join the Star Wars: The Old Republic galaxy.
It's where both Luke and Anakin Skywalker got their starts, and where an unfortunate incident with some Sand People set the latter off on a path that would eventually have him sounding suspiciously like James Earl Jones. Back in the Old Republic timeline, Tatooine is even wilder and more desolate than it was in the movies. The Republic uses the former Czerka Corporation outpost at Anchorhead as a pit stop, while Imperial forces have garrisoned a regiment in Mos Ila, using the Jawa-restored spaceport there as a base of operations as they seek the ruins of Czerka's weapon labs.
Between the two? A terrible secret. Insert dramatic incidental music here.

The holiday season is in full swing at GOG.com (http://www.gog.com), as the DRM-free, classics-oriented digital distribution outlet joins forces with WordPlay LLC to offer a free game – no, make that two free games – to all registered GOG.com users. For a very limited time, from December 17 until December 24, the first two adventures of the most popular private investigator in PC gaming history – Tex Murphy – will be available for the low, low price of absolutely nothing to everyone who registers an account at GOG.com. That’s right – two great games for zip, zero, zilch, nada!
The Tex Murphy 1+2 bundle includes the first two parts of the detective games series – Mean Streets and Martian Memorandum. Both games put player in the white sneakers, trench coat and brimmed hat of Tex Murphy, a down-on-his-luck Private Eye who’s always low on cash and neck-deep in trouble. To survive in this cruel world, Tex will take any case, even the one that seems unsolvable.
"It seems appropriate to offer Tex Murphy's first two adventures for nothing, as that's typically how much he gets paid - not surprising when half of your clients double-cross you and/or die! But Tex isn't in it for the money and, for us, we hope that giving these games away for free will be a great way to introduce more people to Tex's world," said Aaron Conners, founder of WordPlay LLC and writer and co-designer of the last three Tex Murphy games.
“We wanted to do something special for our users, just like we did last year when we added Beneath a Steel Sky and Lure of the Temptress as two free games in the catalogue. This time, thanks to Aaron Conners and WordPlay, we're able to give all GOG users the first two parts of the great Tex Murphy series,” said Adam Oldakowski, Managing Director at GOG.com. “Wishing everyone ‘Happy Holidays!’”
Tex Murphy 1+2 bundle, including Mean Streets and Martian Memorandum, is now available for free to every registered user at GOG.com until December 24 at 11:59 p.m. EDT. Registration is free and is a very easy one-step process. Those who have already purchased the Tex Murphy 1+2 bundle have the option of registering for an alternative gift.
