Mozilla has shipped a release candidate build of Firefox 3.6 that, barring problems, will become the final, finished version of the upgrade. Firefox 3.6 RC1, which followed a run of betas that started in early November, features nearly 100 bug fixes from the fifth beta that Mozilla issued Dec. 17. The fixes resolved numerous crash bugs, including one that brought down the browser when it was steered to Yahoo's front page. Another fix removed a small amount of code owned by Microsoft from Firefox. The code was pointed out by a Mozilla contributor, and after digging, another developer found the original Microsoft license agreement. 'Amusingly enough, it's actually really permissive. Really the only part that's problematic is the agreement to "include the copyright notice ... on your product label and as a part of the sign-on message for your software product,"' wrote Kyle Huey on Mozilla's Bugzilla. Even so, others working on the bug said the code needed to be replaced with Mozilla's own.

Today Cryptic Studios will begin the open beta of Star Trek Online, opening their test servers to invitees and anyone who has pre-ordered the game. The beta will run through the 26th, and the game will officially launch on February 2nd; head-start players will be allowed in on January 29th. The game is set in the old universe (not the rebooted one from last year's movie), and takes place roughly 30 years after the events in Star Trek: Nemesis. There are two playable factions to start — the Federation and the Klingon Empire — and more may become available later on. There will be conflict between the two factions, but supposedly all PvP will be "optional and consensual." Players will be able to choose from a variety of ships, and they'll see cameos from familiar characters. Eurogamer has a hands-on preview of the game, and fans of the Trek universe will be pleased to hear that "Cryptic is clearly thinking about Star Trek first and MMO convention second." A number of gameplay trailers are available for viewing, and the official forums have a nice collection of facts.

January 12th, 2010, 17:44 Posted By: wraggster
EA chief executive John Riccitiello has said that the publisher is planning to release a "major MMO" in "spring 2011".
It seems likely that Riccitiello was referring to BioWare's Star Wars: The Old Republic, a joint venture with LucasArts. The other unreleased massively multiplayer games on EA's slate are less conventional and scheduled for 2010 releases: Realtime Worlds' subscription-free online action game APB, and the free-to-play Need for Speed: World Online.
"One key driver is going to be the launch date of our major MMO," Riccitiello said in an investor conference call (thanks Shacknews). "As it stands today, the game is making great progress towards a spring 2011 launch.
"But given the volatility of this particular sector and the fact that we haven't yet provided a specific launch date, at least for now, we're excluding the revenue, or will be excluding the revenue, from our FY11 plans."
GameSpot asked an EA rep if Riccitiello was talking about The Old Republic and was told, "No further comment beyond what John said. This wasn't a comment about a specific franchise, but a notation on how we are building a plan and guidance for the next fiscal year."
Star Wars: The Old Republic is considered the first credible threat to Activision Blizzard's World of Warcraft, whose immense revenues Riccitiello presumably eyes with envy - so it would make sense for him to refer to it as "our major MMO". Many thought it might see the light of day in late 2010, but EA, LucasArts and BioWare have never previously given any indication on its release date.
Of course, it could be that EA has another MMO project in the works that it hasn't told anyone about yet.

Intel has released a statement backing proposals by the Prime Minister Gordon Brown to give free laptops to low income families in the UK.
The Home Access scheme was initiated across the nation yesterday and follows research that shows that pupils with a PC at home could improve their GSCE results by two grades.
It will allow around 270,000 families with children in years three and nine to apply for a grant to buy a PC and broadband connection from approved suppliers.
“Today’s announcement is a step in the right direction. We fully support the Government’s commitment to give access to technology to some of the most disadvantaged segments of society,” commented Intel’s head of public sector and member of the Digital Inclusion Taskforce, Tristan Wilkinson.
“But we need to act quickly and much more work needs to be done if we are to deliver the benefits of technology to all of the 1.3m low income families that are in need of assistance, to enable those children to reach their full potential. A recent report from the Digital Inclusion Champion identified ‘Where children have 1 or more GCSEs at A* - C, computer ownership increases chance of getting 5 good GCSEs by 9 percentage points.’
“There is a clear and proven linkage today that access to technology can improve the educational outcomes for many children and that to deny that opportunity to low income families can have the adverse effect and make entering the workplace even harder.”

Mad Catz Interactive has announced it is to release an amBX hardware development kit designed especially for the PC software studios.
The kit will help developers to integrate amBX technology into their PC games and will be freely available to qualified publishers and developers from spring this year, the company confirmed.
amBX - short for ambient experiences - is described as a 'sensory surround' system, which delivers added atmosphere to the gaming experience through dymanic real world effects such as light and colour.
The HDK will come with the amBX-enabled Cyborg Gaming Lights and keyboard. The former are light pods that sit either side of a user's monitor and produce up to 16 million colours, the latter is an interactive backlit keyboard capable of producing real time lighting effects in conjunction with on-screen gameplay.
According to amBX UK CEO Neil MacDonald, together with amBX's software development kit, the new partnership will give game studios all they need ahead of the company's commercial release of the Cyborg hardware to integrate the technology into their games.
"We're extremely pleased that Mad Catz have made an amBX HDK available for developer studios," said MacDonald.
"Having the HDK ahead of the commercial release of the amBX-enabled Cyborg products, and with our free amBX SDK, game studios will have all the tools they need to quickly and easily implement amBX immersive effects into games. The fantastic new amBX Cyborg range will bring new dimensions of immersive gaming to PC gamers and represent a leap ahead for the gaming experience."
Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz in November last year, MacDonald said amBX hoped to bring its technology to consoles as well as PC sometime in the future.
Consumer console products would hopefully be on the market by the end of 2010, he said. amBX had already been licensed for the PlayStation 3 and the company was in the process then of embarking on the same process for the Xbox 360.

German minister accuses web giant of creating "giant monopoly"
Google is becoming a "giant monopoly" like Microsoft and must become more transparent or face legal action, Germany's justice minister has said.
According to Reuters, Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger told German magazine Der Spiegel that she was concerned about the amount of power and information the web giant was gathering about ordinary people, through programmes such as Google Earth.
"All in all, what's taking shape there to a large extent is a giant monopoly, similar to Microsoft," she said. "My initial response is not to ban something or stop something. But I do want to create more transparency and ensure that users know what is going on with their data," she added.
"I think the companies have an obligation here, and a lot of things ought to be improved. If that doesn't happen soon we may have to take action as legislators."
A spokesman for Google Germany told Reuters that full transparency was central to the company and that it was constantly striving to make improvements in this area.

WoW.com is reporting that a trusted source has informed them that Blizzard is giving serious consideration to making authenticators mandatory on all World of Warcraft accounts. The authenticators function the same as ones provided by most banks — in order to log in, you must generate a number on the external device. Blizzard already provides a free iPhone app that functions as an authenticator. The source stated, 'it is a virtually forgone conclusion that it will happen.' This comes after large spates of compromised accounts left Bizzard game masters severely backlogged by restoration requests.

The developers at Turborilla have remade the 1983 classic game M.U.L.E. The game is free, and has slightly updated graphics, but more or less the same gameplay as the original version. As with the original game, up to four players can play against each other (or fewer than four with AI players taking the other spots). Unlike the original version, the four players can play against each other online. For those of you not familiar with M.U.L.E., it was one of the earliest economic simulation games, revolving around the colonization of the fictitious planet Irata (Atari spelled backwards). I have fond memories of spending what seemed like days at a time playing the game, as it's quite addictive, with the gameplay seeming simpler than it turns out to be. I'm sure I'm not the only Slashdotter who had a nasty M.U.L.E. addiction back in the day and would like a dose of nostalgia every now and then.

Recently, some Steam users reported issues with recently purchased copies of Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 -- issues said to be caused by missing serial numbers required for online play that weren't included with digitally distributed copies of the game. EA today confirmed to Joystiq via Twitter that the issue had been "quickly resolved," further adding that "all is well back in Steam land." We've followed up with EA to find out the nature of the issue and for more information on its resolution, but until we hear back, you go enjoy dropping war bears into online matches. That's what they're there for, after all.

Although it still intends to release three versions of StarCraft 2 -- each featuring on a single-player campaign for the Terran, Protoss or Zerg races -- Blizzard has revealed that the first, the Terran-specific Wings of Liberty, will also feature "a Protoss mini-campaign that lets you control Protoss units," this according to an employee post on the game's official forums.
Not wanting to get anyone's hopes up too high, Blizzard says that the component is "way shorter than the Terran part," adding that it "will not prepare you for the multiplayer as Protoss, you won't be using all units or getting to know buildings and upgrades." The multiplayer component of StarCraft 2 will let players control all three races when Wings of Liberty hits this year someday.

Luke Skywalker actor Mark Hamill has told PC Zone that he's never been asked to lend his voice to a Star Wars game.
Despite his starring role in George Lucas's original movie trilogy and a successful voice-over career in games - including the Wing Commander series and recent smash Batman: Arkham Asylum - Hamill said that LucasArts had never contacted him to ask if he fancied relinquishing his role for a console release.
He told Zone:
"When I played Luke from 1977 to 1983, games were in their infancy. I talked about turning a page and starting a new chapter. Those movies had a beginning, middle and end, and everyone sort of moved on.
"I don't really know how to answer that, because I've never been asked to do it. That's fine, though.
"If you're playing Luke the way he was in the films - from his late teens to mid-'20s - I've outgrown the role. In the story, Luke is so boy-next-door farm boy, it's like Dorothy in Oz. All the other characters that surround him are fantastic."

The dispute over World of Warcraft between China's third-largest online games operator NetEase and the country's General Administration of Press and Publication could be resolved shortly, according to reports.
Sources have told Reuters that NetEase has been order to pay a fine to Beijing regulators for allegedly breaching regulations, but that it will be allowed to continue operating the game.
According to a GAPP official, a resolution and announcement regarding the operation of the game will be unveiled "very soon".
The dispute between NetEase and China's authorities began last year following the operator's taking over of the running of the game from The9.
Upon the game's re-release, GAPP claimed it had only authorised a beta release and that taking money and new account registrations was "illegal behaviour" on NetEase's part - an allegation the operator denies as it said the release had been approved by China's Ministry of Culture.
Analysts predict that once the dispute is eventually settled, NetEase will release the Wrath of the Lich King expansion pack in China.

FreeLords is an open source project that aims to provide a free Warlords clone.
Quote:
We have switched the release cycle to one release every three months, and this version is the first to follow this pattern. The changes in this release are:
* Client-server handshake rewrite
While this may sound rather boring and technical, rewriting the setup code fixed several bugs, streamlined the Lobby form a bit, and we also implemented some other changes along the way. These are colorized chats, proper client authentication, the display of player titles, and guest players that can watch a game without participating.
* Interface improvements
A crude version of variable mouse cursors and an overview map were added. Some of the standard dialogs can now be closed by a simple click. A couple of drawing glitches when scrolling around were fixed.
* Various other improvemens
The external libraries have been updated, the changelog is now read from an external file, and the code base got a big boost in comments, and was simplified in some parts.

Those who bought Red Alert 3 during Steam's holiday sale are finding themselves with a partially useless game purchased at an admittedly excellent price. Steam users report that the downloaded copies of Red Alert 3 don't include serial numbers, which the game requires for online play.
A similar issue occurred recently through Steam with the digital sale of Spore. That problem seems to have been resolved, and at least one Red Alert 3 player has been able to rectify the current error, though the solution required the game to be re-downloaded directly from EA (complete with SecuROM DRM). Still, EA's eventual intervention in Steam's Spore issue is a possible sign that these Red Alert 3 woes will be alleviated in a more timely manner.

Intel has officially launched their new Core i5 and Core i3 lineup of Arrandale and Clarkdale processors today, for mobile and desktop platforms respectively. Like Intel's recent release of the Pinetrail platform for netbooks, new Arrandale and Clarkdale processors combine both an integrated memory controller (DDR3) and GPU (graphics processor) on the same package as the main processor. Though it's not a monolithic device, but is built upon multi-chip module packaging, it does allow these primary functional blocks to coexist in a single chip footprint or socket. In addition, Intel beefed up their graphics core and it appears that the new Intel GMA HD integrated graphics engine offers solid HD video performance and even a bit of light gaming capability.

In the last quarter, Chrome, Safari and Opera all set new personal bests for browser market share with 4.63, 4.46 and 2.4 percent respectively. This period marks the first time Chrome has beaten Safari to third spot, while their collective prosperity comes at the expense of IE, which continues to hemorrhage users at a rate of 0.92 percentage points a month. Microsoft's 62.7 percent slice might still look mighty, but projections from Net Applications suggest it could shrink to below 50 percent by May of this year. Unless something magical happens. You'll probably also want to know that Net Applications monitors incoming traffic to over 40,000 websites and generates a sample size of about 160 million unique visitors each month -- making the veracity of its claims pretty robust. One hidden sign of our collective laziness: 21 percent of all users last quarter were still fulfilling their browsing needs with IE 6. For shame.

According to a Net Applications survey, Google Chrome has replaced Apple's Safari as the number-three browser. This may be partially explained by the release of the Chrome beta on Mac and Linux, but may also be due to users jumping ship from IE. More analysis on this topic can be found at ComputerWorld. As anecdotal evidence of Google Chrome usage gaining steam, Bank of America has apparently recently added Google Chrome to their list of officially supported browsers.
