VindictivePantz sends word that the Windows 7 team has posted a new blog entry discussing their conclusions about the reported Windows 7 battery failures.
"To the very best of the collective ecosystem knowledge, Windows 7 is correctly warning batteries that are in fact failing and Windows 7 is neither incorrectly reporting on battery status nor in any way whatsoever causing batteries to reach this state. In every case we have been able to identify the battery being reported on was in fact in need of recommended replacement. ...every single indication we have regarding the reports we've seen are simply Windows 7 reporting the state of the battery using this new feature and we're simply seeing batteries that are not performing above the designated threshold. ... We are as certain as we can be that we have addressed the root cause and concerns of this report, but we will continue to monitor the situation."

Over 8 million users have registered to play Sony Online Entertainment's Free Realms, the free-to-play virtual world game.
Driving the sign-ups has been the constant addition and evolution of content for the game, said SOE, with new features and events encouraging socialising and interaction.
"Free Realms is more than just a virtual world for our players; it is a portal for imagination," commented John Smedley, president of Sony Online Entertainment. "A place where players transform their house into a jumping maze for friends to compete or a petting zoo that boasts all their pets."
"Our job as developers is to listen to and predict what they want and give them the tools that inspire and compel them to share their experiences with eight million others."
The game was a hit when launched last year, with over 3 million users signing up in under two months.

Square Enix (owner of Eidos) has applied for a Deus Ex: Human Revolution trademark here in Europe.
Could this be the name of Deus Ex 3, the prequel in development at Eidos Montreal?
The filing - made on 5th February and spotted by Siliconera - doesn't say.
We've not seen anything of Deus Ex 3 other than a teaser cinematic so far, although we've heard a bit about it. We know we'll play a private investigator called Adam Jensen, we know there will be biomods, and we know there will be cover-based stealth and customisable weaponry and armour.
And we know that the Tomb Raider Legend engine is underpinning the adventure, based in a world that Eidos Montreal wants to be as immediately captivating as BioShock.
Deus Ex 3 is in development for PC and "next-gen" consoles, which presumably means PS3 and Xbox 360. There's no release date yet.

Tablet PCs will have their “breakout year” in 2010, but this popularity could come at the expense of devices such as e-readers and netbooks.
Deloitte’s annual Technology, Media and Telecommunications Predictions report claimed that tablet or slate devices, such as Apple's iPad, will be purchased by “tens of millions of people” this year.
However, as slates become more popular, they could begin to push similar, less functional devices such as e-readers out of the market.
“Book consumption in this country is, on average, four a year, so most people wouldn’t be willing to buy such a niche device when they can get something similar that performs a wider range of functions,” Deloitte’s director of research for technology, media and telecoms, Paul Lee, told PCR. “Small laptops or netbooks could also see some of that.”
EntaTech’s commercial group vice president, Jon Atherton, added: “If the likes of Microsoft and other tier one vendors are investing machinery, time and effort to bring a product out under the tablet umbrella then there is obviously going to be a big marketing push to drive sales.”
Those invested in the netbook market are less convinced. “I don’t think the evolution of touchscreen tablets is the reason why the netbook sector will grow or shrink,” said Bobby Watkins, UK country manager for Acer. "I think it will come down to whether consumers want a device that has the power to produce content or if they just want to do a few small things on the move."
And while Watkins would not comment on whether the vendor was preparing a slate of its own, he did say: “Acer is interested in being the leader in mobile computing. All of the technology and derivatives that make sense in order to position ourselves as the leader, we have to lead in as well.”

Unity Technologies has secured a three-year deal with Lego Group, with its engine licensed to develop a number of online games on the firm’s website.
Unity CEO David Helgason said the deal was testament to the platform’s suitability for browser-based content creation.
“We’re very excited to be playing such a significant part of the Lego Group’s future web plans,” he said.
“We’re experiencing rapid growth of the Unity plugin, with around 1 million installs per month, and we anticipate that this will grow exponentially as Unity is adopted by more sites and consumers become more familiar with our brand."

The political struggle in China over the regulation of the online games space has once again hit the operation of Blizzard's World of Warcraft in the country, with operator NetEase announcing a suspension of new registrations for the game yesterday.
The move comes as the governmental department, the General Administration of Press and Publication, ordered NetEase to stop charging people to play the game as a result of "gross violations" of regulations, reports Reuters.
NetEase has denied that is the case, and that the game complies with local laws, but this latest event is the outcome of an ongoing clash between government departments - with both the GAPP and the Ministry of Culture flexing muscles over who should oversee the online space.
The warning bells first rang in March last year when the GAPP announced its intention to target non-Chinese titles in a bid to "avoid the excessive penetration of foreign culture among Chinese youth" - with WoW mentioned specifically by Digital Publishing Bureau director Kou Xiaowei.
Since then Blizzard opted to change operator from The9 to NetEase, but as the changeover took place the game was forced to remain in a beta phase while the Chinese government processed a new permit.
That took several months to conclude, but when the game was finally relaunched in September, the GAPP's "surly interference" (according to the Ministry of Culture) created more issues, and NetEase was ordered to stop new registrations for a period of time in November.
The issues were finally cleared up at the beginning of this year - but the game was untroubled for only a month before this new bump in the road.
But Blizzard's VP of International, Michael Ryder, refused to criticise the process of getting the game back online after the operator transition when speaking to GamesIndustry.biz last year.
"We're working hard to complete the transition - we're working with the government to get the final approvals, and we've made a tremendous amount of progress in a short period of time in transitioning from one partner to another in going to NetEase," he said then.
"Our servers are up-and-running now in a beta test phase, and concurrency is running quite high, so we know there's continued interest with the players. We've transitioned everyone over to the Battle.Net account management system, which has been a big success for us as well.
"We've upgraded the technology and the server hardware across the board and everyone's very pleased with how that's performing. So we feel pretty good about the progress we've made, and hopefully we'll be getting the rest of the approvals we need in the near future and then we'll be back on track."
Blizzard has not yet commented on the current situation.

The newly published ESRB ratings certificate for Battlefield: Bad Company 2 mentions that "players conduct missions on an unnamed Japanese island during World War II and then move into the modern day."
Earlier, we mentioned that Battlefield: Bad Company 2 would support weapons from last spring's Battlefield: 1943 (pictured above). It sounds like this could be a beginning mission establishing the BFBC2 continuity, not a flashback level. But it could be that DICE is testing community reaction to the World War II genre, which of course many have complained is played out within FPSes. That said EA's ramping up a competitor to Modern Warfare, and this might tip off ideas of going after World at War.
No surprises in the rest of the certificate. "Characters use profanity (e.g., "f**k," "sh*t," and "a*shole") during cutscenes and in the heat of battle." As I said, no surprises.

seek3r sends news of a recent test of six web application security scanning products, in which the scanners missed an average of 49% of the vulnerabilities known to be on the test sites. Here is a PDF of the report. The irony is that the test pitted eah scanner against the public test files of all the scanners. This reader adds, "Is it any wonder that being PCI compliant is meaningless from a security point of view? You can perform a Web app scan, check the box on your PCI audit, and still have the security posture of swiss cheese on your Web app!"
"NTOSpider found over twice as many vulnerabilities as the average competitor having a 94% accuracy rating, with Hailstorm having the second best rating of 62%, but only after extensive training by an expert. Appscan had the second best 'Point and Shoot' rating of 55% and the rest averaged 39%.

Championship Manager Online co-developer Jadestone has laid the blame for the game's termination squarely at the door of Eidos.
The news comes after swarms of CMO fans today wrote to CVG to express their upset at the game's demise.
A Jadestone rep said in a statement to the CMO community:
"We - at Jadestone - cannot talk about the decision to close the game, due to contractual obligations. We will not answer or comment any such questions.
"The game, the brand, the internet domain and the subscriptions are all owned by Eidos and the decision to cease the service is entirely theirs to make. The decision was made unilaterally by them, and we are not at liberty to comment on any reasoning.
"Finally, we only have one more thing to say:
Thank you, and we're sorry."
The company said three-month subscriptions to the game were not possible to sign or re-sign and that one-month subscriptions will cease to work on March 30th. However, all accounts that are premium on March 30th will be extended to April 30th.
CVG has contacted Eidos for comment.

Those of you who guessed "comic book" along with us when the Command & Conquer team hinted that their universe was headed to a "new medium" were still stuck in the past of 2009 -- here in 2010, comics move like video, and they're called "motion comics." Geez, get with the decade! EA's posted a teaser trailer for the C&C "motion comic," created in conjunction with Ape Entertainment, and almost literally, all it says is that Episode 1 is coming soon.
There's also a guy in a truck who wants to know the same thing we do: What he's doing here. Oh yeah, and can we know where "here," is, too, and what this has to do with the game? You can head after the break to watch the entire teaser for yourself. Just be sure not to blink.

Microsoft will fix a 17-year-old vulnerability in Windows in its latest security update.
According to BBC News, the operating system’s February update will patch a bug involving DOS that has appeared in almost every version of Windows since NT 3.1.
The bug was discovered by a Google security researcher in January and involves a BIOS exploit that occurs when a programme is run in compatibility mode.
The February security update will also tackle a further 25 holes in Windows, five of which are rated as "critical".
Last month Microsoft said it would issue an early patch to tackle a vulnerability in Internet Explorer that allowed hackers to access a number of email accounts. A spate of high-profile web attacks led to the French and German governments encouraging users to switch to alternative browsers.

Dungeon Bandits Rolls Into 3rd Closed Beta Test
PlayEnvy will be holding the 3rd closed beta test for its upcoming tournament based MMO, Dungeon Bandits, this weekend. Servers will brought online at 4:00 pm Pacific Time February 5th and will continue testing until 12:00 pm Pacific Time on Sunday, February 7th.
This latest phase of testing includes several improvements to various dungeon maps, auto updater, chat channels and more. In addition to the standard testing, several lucky testers will be invited to take part in specific feature tests with the admin team which will lay the groundwork for a soon-to-be announced update to the game.
At first glance, Dungeon Bandits may seem like a simple dungeon crawler; however, after your first few games the strategic elements really start to come into focus. Winning matches requires strong team play, smart use of the environment, and strategic use of character skills. Each map has its own tactical requirements and contrasting character specific roles. While the overall game play allows for quick understanding of the concept, mastering the strategic tactics can take some time.
A few of the features:
* Up to 5vs5 team matches
* Guild System with auto matchmaking
* Dynamic Skill System
* 7 Unique Classes at launch
* Vast Character Customization
* Map Editor allows players to contribute their own creations
To get registered for Dungeon Bandits, players can obtain a beta key from participating site partners then activate their free account at http://dungeonbandits.playenvy.com/?q=user/register

The PC charts were last week dominated by the likes of Mass Effect 2, Battlefield Bad Company 2 and Star Trek Online. No surprises there. So we'll instead focus our admiration on Tim Schafer's Psychonauts instead.
The platformer was on sale for $2 during this time, and made it to #8 on the Steam charts. I will now remind you that the Steam charts are determined on revenue, not units sold, so Psychonauts obviously sold a ton, spreading good will and cheer to those with the foresight to see what they'd been missing all this time.

Microsoft warned that a flaw in IE gives attackers access to files stored on a PC under certain conditions. 'Our investigation so far has shown that if a user is using a version of Internet Explorer that is not running in Protected Mode an attacker may be able to access files with an already known filename and location,' Microsoft said in a security advisory. The vulnerability requires that an attacker knows the name of the file they want to access, according to the company.

THQ has promised to "fully unveil" the new Warhammer 40K MMO at this summer's E3 2010.
Boss Brian Farrell told investors this IP could run for several years, and therefore represents the "highest ranking revenue opportunity" the publisher has.
Farrell added that in Warhammer 40K, THQ has a "very competitive MMO".
So far we know little about the game. Darksiders' Vigil Games will develop under the creative lead of Joe Madureira - presumably alongside the Darksiders sequel due out before April next year.
Madureira's said combat will take place on a larger scale than Mythic's Warhammer Online and that there will be "tons" of customisation and the "coolest looking characters of any MMO, ever".
E3 takes place on 15th-17th June 2010. We'll be there.

One of the games industry’s most celebrated global success is enjoys its tenth birthday today, and while success very much depends on how you measure it, by any account The Sims is one of most successful and enduring video games series the world has ever seen.
Having first debuted on February 4th 2000, The Sims IP has since gone on to become the best-selling PC game in “nearly every major video game market worldwide”, shifting a massive 125m copies and generating $2.5bn of revenue in the process.
“The success of The Sims is something gamers and the gaming business as a whole can be proud of,” EA Play label boss Rod Humble stated.
“With its charming and quirky style, lovely emergent game mechanics and user created creativity that delights every day, The Sims is a game that can be enjoyed by everybody and reflects what you put into it.
“The future of The Sims is going to be a lot of fun; it is rare for an entertainment franchise to be gaining momentum a decade after release, so this is a particularly pleasant moment for everyone who has worked on the games.”
And while some series struggle to maintain their popularity in the quickly evolving market that is video games, there’s no sign yet of The Sims’ popularity abating. The most recent instalment, The Sims 3, has sold over 4.5m units since its release in June last year.
In addition, there have been nearly 110m downloads for the game and its community website welcomes in the region of 6m unique users each month, serving 300 downloads a minute.
The Sims’ success has spread to new formats, too, with The Sims 3 on iPhone being the best selling game on the App Store in 2009. The Sims 3’s YouTube channel is the second most subscribed on the service with over 55,000 users and over 26m video views.
So let’s raise a glass to one of our greatest successes. Happy birthday, The Sims!
