Several readers have written with a fun follow up to yesterday's IE6 funeral. Apparently Microsoft, in a rare moment of self-jest, took the time to send flowers, condolences, and a promise to meet at MIX. The card reads:
"Thanks for the good times IE6, see you all @ MIX when we show a little piece of IE Heaven. The Internet Explorer Team @ Microsoft."

One of the discussions that arise anytime we bring up a new graphics card from ATI or NVIDIA is about which company has the better drivers. Well, this should help sway the argument a little bit. It would seem StarCraft II Beta players were among the first to notice low frame rates while using the latest drivers from NVIDIA, and further digging has uncovered that the automated fan-controlling part of said firmware was failing to act as intended.
The result? Overheated chips, diminished performance, and in some extreme cases, death (of the GPU, we think the users will be okay). The totality of it is that you should avoid the 196.75 iteration like the plague, and NVIDIA has temporarily yanked the update while investigating the reported issues.
Shame that the company hasn't got any warnings up on its site to tell those who've installed the update but haven't yet nuked their graphics card to roll back their drivers, but that's what you've got us for, right?

More than 100 people, many of them dressed in black, are expected to gather around a coffin Thursday to say goodbye to an old friend. The deceased? Internet Explorer 6. The aging Web browser, survived by its descendants Internet Explorer 7 and Internet Explorer 8, is being eulogized at a tongue-in-cheek 'funeral' hosted by Aten Design Group, a design firm in Denver, Colorado.

The typical home user running Windows faces the 'unreasonable' task of patching software an average of every five days, security research company Secunia said on Thursday. 'It's completely unreasonable to expect users to master so many different patch mechanisms and spend so much time patching,' said Thomas Kristensen, the company's CSO. The result: Few consumers devote the time and attention necessary to stay atop the patching job, which leaves them open to attack. Secunia says that of the users who ran the company's Personal Software Inspector in the last week of January, half had 66 or more programs from 22 or more different vendors on their machines. ... Secunia has published a white paper (PDF) that details its findings.

Ubisoft has denied that its new anti-piracy measures have been cracked for Silent Hunter 5 on the day the game was released, saying that versions currently being hosted on torrent sites are incomplete.
According to a report published earlier today by Eurogamer, submarine simulator Silent Hunter 5: Battle of the Atlantic, and the day one patch that fixed many fundamental bugs, were immediately hacked, with the game appearing on torrent sites and Usenet. Sites were also hosting versions of Assassin's Creed II.
In the case of Silent Hunter 5, the anti-piracy system was apparently circumvented by replacing an executable file with a patched replacement – similar to most PC hacks. The piracy group responsible said that, in addition, the user turning off their internet connection or not using Ubisoft's game loader was enough to get the game running DRM-free.
However, Ubisoft denies its systems have been circumvented, saying in a statement, "You have probably seen rumours on the web that Assassin's Creed II and Silent Hunter 5 have been cracked.
"Please know that this rumour is false and while a pirated version may seem to be complete at start up, any gamer who downloads and plays a cracked version will find that their version is not complete."
Forum users seem to disagree though, with some today saying they are playing a pirated version of Silent Hunter 5 without an internet connection and by saving offline.
Ubisoft's new DRM system relies on gamers having a constant internet connection in order to be authenticated on the company's servers to play. If their connection drops out, they can lose progress made in the game up until that point.
Since its announcement, the PC community has largely been opposed to the new restrictions it imposes on them. However, Ubisoft has said there are upshots to the system – such as being able to run games without a disc and play on any number of PCs, and store save files remotely – and point out that most people are always connected to the internet anyway.

Ubisoft has responded to claims that its new internet-linked DRM system has been compromised, saying that pirates downloading cracked versions of Silent Hunter 5 and Assassin's Creed 2 will be getting a game that is "not complete".
"You have probably seen rumours on the web that Assassin’s Creed II and Silent Hunter 5 have been cracked," Ubisoft's statement reads. "Please know that this rumour is false and while a pirated version may seem to be complete at start up, any gamer who downloads and plays a cracked version will find that their version is not complete."
A truncated form of the statement has also shown up on Ubisoft's official Twitter feed, flagged up as "rumour control".

NCsoft details Aion's version 1.9 patch today, an update dedicated to making the player experience more joy and less grind. We spoke to lead producer Chris Hager about changing the way subscribers play and perceive the popular MMO.
Aion patch 1.9 is still a long way out, but NCsoft wants to make sure players know it's coming. North American and European players normally have to rely on fan-translations of Korean patch notes for a glimpse at the future of Aion, but that all changes today.
"We want to change the perception of the game," Hager says. "We're going to start releasing information at the same time as Korea, so our fans don't have to go through translations to see the patch notes."
Hager hopes that releasing the information simultaneously across all regions will quell the notion that this is simply a port of the Korean title. This doesn't mean that Korea won't be getting the new content first, but Hager wants players in North America and Europe to know that they are working hard to get the content ready to release in the Western world.
"We want it as fast as we can get it. The main issues is that when we localize content, we're localizing it into three different languages across two different territories. We want to be ahead of the game as much as we can."
As for the changes themselves, the focus seems to be on lessening the grind and providing greater rewards to the player.
Patch 1.9 brings many changes to instances, mainly in terms of item drops. "Getting drops in instances has been painful," Hager admits. The patch will dramatically increase drop rates for useful loot items, giving players "an actual carrot on a stick" to run through instances. "We want to encourage players to run an instance and know they're going to get rewarded for it."
The quest system is also receiving major tweaks, with more experience points awarded and item rewards that are worth questing for, as opposed to current quest rewards, which are often less powerful than items regularly found on wandering creatures.
Patch 1.9 will also introduce new timed items. Participating in daily quests or visiting a new item rental shop will give players temporary equipment, allowing them to participate in more advanced content without having to grind for days to get their equipment up to snuff.
"Again, it's all about lessening the grind and improving the current player experience," says Hager.
Other changes include a weapon merging system for two-handed weapons, often considered the weakest in the game, which will combine two weapons' statistics into one more powerful item; a menu-driven looking for group system; and a drop in the price of money sinks like soul healing and transportation.
And that's just the tip of the iceberg, as far as patch 1.9 goes. Hager says that the patch notes are 26 pages long, so expect many more changes to Aion over the course of the next year.

March 3rd, 2010, 23:42 Posted By: wraggster
Activision has made a worrying risk assessment of World of Warcraft, claiming the MMO giant could be toppled - rendered "obsolete" - by the emerging social gaming scene.
"We also compete with other forms of interactive entertainment," said Activision in its 10-K annual report, "such as casual games like iPhone applications and other mobile phone games, and games developed for use by consumers on social networking sites.
"Future increased consumer acceptance and increases in the availability of such games or other online games, or technological advances in online game software or the Internet, could result in a decline in platform-based software and negatively impact sales of our console and hand-held products.
"Newer technological advances in online game software may also render products such as World of Warcraft obsolete."
Call of Duty, Guitar Hero and World of Warcraft made up 68 per cent of Activision's net revenues in 2009, apparently.
"A substantial portion of our revenue and profitability will depend on the subscription-based massively multiplayer online role-playing game category. If we do not maintain our leadership position in this category, our financial results could suffer," added the publisher.
Maintaining leadership involves staying ahead of competitors, the publisher said. And there are plenty of would-be threats ready to steal the crown.
"A number of software publishers have developed and commercialised - or are currently developing - online games for use by consumers over the Internet, which pose a threat to the popularity of World of Warcraft and we expect new competitors to continue to emerge in the MMORPG category," Activision offered.
"If consumer demand for World of Warcraft games declines and we have not introduced new MMORPG or other products that replace World of Warcraft's potentially decreasing revenue, or added other sources of revenue, our financial condition could suffer.
"Additionally, if new technologies are developed that replace MMORPG games, consumer preferences trend away from MMORPG games or new business models emerge that offer online subscriptions for free or at a substantial discount to current MMORPG subscription fees, our revenue and profitability may decline," the report added.
World of Warcraft growth has plateaued at 11.5 million users worldwide. The potential vulnerability of the MMO that has lead the genre for over five years may raise some eyebrows.
However, World of Warcraft expansion Cataclysm may revitalise consumer enthusiasm when released sometime this year, and Activision's 10-K form is designed to air as many potential risks as possible, so take it with a pinch of salt.
Activision dominated headlines yesterday by sacking two Infinity Ward bosses for rumoured "insubordination" - being in talks with other publishers, sources claimed. Should the Infinity Ward team follow their leaders, Activision could find itself without its flagship Call of Duty team.
That doesn't appear to have dampened Activision's plans for Call of Duty, however.
Still, given the circumstances, it's ironic that one of Activision's risk assessments outlines attracting and retaining "key personnel".
"Our success depends to a significant extent on our ability to identify, hire, and retain skilled personnel, particularly personnel with the specialized skills needed to create the high-quality 'hit' titles upon which our business is substantially dependent," the report continued.
"The software industry is characterised by a high level of employee mobility and aggressive recruiting among competitors for personnel with technical, marketing, sales, product development, and management skills.
"We may have difficulties in attracting and retaining skilled personnel or may incur significant costs in order to do so. If we are unable to attract additional qualified employees or retain the services of key personnel, our business and financial results could be negatively impacted."

Microsoft has issued a security advisory warning users not to press the F1 key in Windows XP, owing to an unpatched bug in VBScript discovered by Polish researcher Maurycy Prodeus. The security advisory says that the vulnerability relates to the way VBScript interacts with Windows Help files when using Internet Explorer, and could be triggered by a user pressing the F1 key after visiting a malicious Web site using a specially crafted dialog box

In a bold and bizarre attempt to destroy evidence seized during a federal raid, a New York City man grabbed a flash drive and swallowed the data storage device while in the custody of Secret Service agents. Records show Florin Necula ingested the Kingston flash drive shortly after his January 21 arrest outside a bank in Queens. A Kingston executive said it was unclear if stomach acid could damage one of their drives. 'As you might imagine, we have no actual experience with someone swallowing a USB.' I imagine that would be rather painful. But did he follow his mother's advice and chew thoroughly, first? Apparently not, as the drive was surgically recovered.

It appears Valve has begun another ARG (Alternate Reality Game) similar to the one that led up to the release of the original Portal game. A recent Portal update unlocked a new achievement which has uncovered various hidden images and sounds containing references to the Portal and Half-Life universe. Many believe this to be part of the run-up to the announcement of Portal 2 and/or the next installment of the Half-Life series. A thread on the Steam forums has already reached over 1 million views as people piece together the information. Another thread summarizes the information found so far. Based on clues from the ARG, some are speculating an announcement at the 2010 Game Developers Conference where Valve's co-founder Gabe Newell is to receive this year's Pioneer Award.

Behind the fund are notable developers such as the World of Goo team 2D Boy, Braid creator Jonathan Blow, and Matthew Wegner who made the brilliant Off-Road Velociraptor Safari as well as other key figures in the indie scene.
The group hopes to spell out it plans at the GCD panel Indies and Publishers: Fixing a System that Never Worked. The group will also announce the first few projects to receive funding soon.

Anyone would think the timing was deliberate; just as Microsoft is forced into giving users the option to switch from IE via the browser ballot screen, so Google introduces a new Chrome beta with enhanced privacy features to chisel away at Microsoft's market share. '... you can control how browser cookies, images, JavaScript, plug-ins, and pop-ups are handled on a site-by-site basis. For example, you can set up cookie rules to allow cookies specifically only for sites that you trust, and block cookies from untrusted sites.' The new beta also adds language detection, and will prompt the user to translate a page if it's written in a foreign tongue.

It's hard to imagine a more busy team of lawyers than those on-staff at Microsoft, and while the news isn't always good for them, today they can hold their heads high as a lawsuit filed last year alleging that MS was profiting from so-called "downgrade fees" has finally been dismissed.
US District Court Judge Marsha Pechman found that the plaintiff, Emma Alvarado, didn't prove Microsoft was in any way gaining value from these charges. In fact the downgrade fee to move to XP was, in this case, being charged by Lenovo, not Microsoft, and was to cover the additional time it took to physically install that OS over the standard (at the time) Vista. In other words Alvarado missed the mark and in the process surely cost taxpayers and Microsoft thousands and thousands of dollars. Hooray!

Here's a story that you're probably going to see a lot over the next few years: A company started giving away its game for free, and now reports that it's making more money than before. That's what happened to Turbine, maker of the Dungeons and Dragons Online MMO. Last year, it decided to move from a subscription model to free-to-play, instead earning its revenue off of in-game transactions, and now it's announced that income has increased by 500% and the game is making more money than ever.
DDO is sort of a special case here -- the game was already developed for a subscription model, so the content might be a little more in-depth (not to mention officially licensed) than you'd find on most free-to-play properties. And since the game still does offer subscription plans, the number of subscribers has actually doubled since the changeover (there's no information about whether more money is being made from selling in-game items or from new players who have decided to subscribe). But you can be sure other game developers are closely watching this model, and it's not a stretch to think that, in the next few years, we'll see many more publishers -- of MMOs and otherwise -- try to pull off the paradox of making more money by giving their games away for free.

Valve has released an update for the PC version of Portal that's introduced a series of mysterious radio messages, possibly hinting at a sequel.
The update, which includes a single change labelled simply as "changed radio transmission frequency to comply with federal and state spectrum management regulations" also introduces a PC achievement called 'Transmission Received'.
This is unlocked by moving radios - new and old - around the various challenge rooms until they broadcast upto 26 different Morse code messages.
The PC community (via our mates PC Gamer) is naturally hard at work translating the clues, which all suggest that super AI GlaDOS is, yes, still alive.
Here's what they have so far:
"Interior transmission active
External data line active
Message digest active
System data dump active
User back up active
Password back up active"
There are also some encoded images which you can find below.
It's not the first time a sequel's been on the cards, of course: in 2008 a job ad suggested that the follow-up will in fact arrive in the form of a prequel.
We'll let you know when the super fans find more clues.

[Patrick Becker] had an ancient PC on his hands with a blown PSU. He converted this into a stylish home for his Betta splendens.
The aquarium itself is fashioned from a piece for construction glass block with the top cut off. This allows for a window that looks through the tank and shows off the motherboard on the other side. He patched into the AC connector so that the original power cord can be used to control the pump. A lighted pump button was added to the front panel and a fancy bezel fitted to the viewing portal in the side of the case. He finished off the project with a PVC pipe for air and food. His blue screen of death now features water and a real fish.
