Command & Conquer 4's DRM hasn't garnered Electronic Arts as much bad press and fan outrage as Ubisoft's scheme, despite being very similar. Nevertheless, it's been causing problems and frustrations for some users, including EA.com's own editor-in-chief, Jeff Green. An anonymous reader points this out:
"Green wrote on his Twitter account late last week: 'Booted twice — and progress lost — on my single-player C&C4 game because my DSL connection blinked. DRM fail. We need new solutions.' He continued later, 'Well. I've tried to be open-minded. But my 'net connection is finicky — and the constant disruption of my C&C4 SP game makes this unplayable. The story is fun, the gameplay is interesting and different at least — but if you suffer from shaky/unreliable DSL — you've been warned.'"

Blizzard has ruled out the possibility of it ever introducing LAN support into Starcraft 2 - saying its new 'always online' Battle.net system does a comparable job.
Speaking to CVG as part of an interview we'll post next week, Starcraft 2 lead designer Chris Sigaty said Blizzard wanted to get away from the impression that Battle.net is only for the hardcore player.
When CVG asked if there was any chance LAN support would be introduced down the line, he said: "No. We've made the choice at this point that we're not including LAN. The biggest part of this is when you look back, we changed the feel of Starcraft 2 around getting away from Battle.net being this place you go up to do the hardcore gaming. You're always connected and you're always on Battle.net.
"The experience is shared as much as you want with friends, but those things are tracked as you do it and we felt like staying connected is a part of that, so that's been our main driving force. You don't have to worry about going and clicking the scary Battle.net button to go do that and login. As a part of that, we feel like LAN is not a necessary feature."
We expect the release of Starcraft 2 to arrive in the first half of 2010.

Owners of the PC version of Assassin's Creed II who have been affected by server outages are being offered free downloadable content as compensation, according to user posts on Ubisoft's forums.
Many users have reported receiving an e-mail apologising for the server outages which prevented playing the game. One post by user "Rekalty" reproduces part of the message as follows:
"Following the recent temporary game server outages which may have caused disruption to some Assassin's Creed II players on PC only, we would like to reward your patience if you have experienced any problems by offering you some additional content – previously only available with special editions."
Owners who bought a more expensive special edition, which already includes the downloadable content are apparently being offered a free downloadable game from the choice of Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X, Heroes over Europe, Tom Clancy's EndWar and Prince of Persia.
The server attacks were allegedly caused by hackers protesting at Ubisoft's use of new DRM technology that requires a user to have a constant internet connection, even when playing a single player game.
During the attacks legitimate owners of new PC titles such as Assassin's Creed II were no longer able to play their games. However, Ubisoft claim that 95 per cent of players remained unaffected in the most recent attacks and that games using the DRM technology have not yet been cracked by pirates.

TQ Digital are looking to make 2010 'the year of Conquer Online', thanks to their renowned MMORPG hitting an incredible 7th anniversary milestone.
Since it's 2003 début, the world recognised Conquer Online has charmed millions of players with its vivid traditional Chinese art, immersive player-versus-player gameplay and unrivalled community involvement.
From the humble beginnings of 1,500 users during Conquer Online's OBT phase in 2003, players of the high-kicking MMO have been on a long, fulfilling journey, shaping the game's world and playing experience through community fuelled expansions and events.
Thanks to an active and dedicated team working on the game, more than 65 servers had to be opened between 2004-2006, amounting to an incredible 60'000 online players at any given time.
Once Conquer Online was made available in multiple languages, with success attributable to the incredible growth of dedicated Spanish and French versions released in 2005, the game quickly became a world recognised brand.
2006's release of Conquer Online 2.0 guaranteed it's seat on the free-to-play MMO throne, and free expansions, such as The New Dynasty: Ninja Class (2008) and Riding Clans (2009), only furthered Conquer Online's mass-appeal.
Now, heading into a remarkable 7th year, the legendary game is available in English, Chinese, Spanish, French, Arabic (and more), has millions of active players and is still growing daily.
Conquer Online even has a special "Classic CO" server for it's veteran players, which serves up the original flavour of Conquer Online 1.0 for those who want to explore the roots of a successful MMORPG title.
With new features and adventures on the horizon in the upcoming, entirely free 'Legends Return' expansion, Conquer Online's legendary status is set to conquer well into the future.

March 25th, 2010, 18:19 Posted By: wraggster
Beginning in April players will be able to set foot on the previously forgotten continent of Zandorya and explore its first zone. Frogster is showing the first detailed glimpses into the ‘Thunderhoof Hills’ area and the kingdom of ‘Dalanis’ today. The integration of this high-level region gives players the first content from the main release of ‘Chapter III – The Elder Kingdoms’ which is due for release this May.
In the south of Zandorya lie the verdant Thunderhoof Hills which are surrounded by an imposing mountain range. The region is characterized by its green meadows, rushing waterfalls and wild rivers. Several settlements are nestled in this picturesque landscape as well as the Valley of Glory where mammoth effigies of ancient war heroes rise up to the sky as reminders of past glorious battles. These were the battles in which the legendary King Kalume and his mounted allies once fought against demons and after whom the region was named. Kalume recruited elves, dwarves and other creatures alongside humans such as the rhinoceros-like Kalo people. In recognition of their support Kalume divided up the land amongst these peoples so that the land of Thunderhoof Hills is still diversely populated today.
Players above Level 55 can wander through the zone starting from April and can discover the Kingdom of Dalanis situated at the heart of the Thunderhoof Hills. Its origins stem from the glorious period of Kalume and it is now ruled over by the young King Callaway. The glory days seem to be over for the kingdom which is now plagued by intrigue and revolt since some of the rulers of the six principalities have their sights set firmly on Callaway’s throne and the powers it brings. However, the King still recalls the region’s grand old days and wants to return Dalanis to its former glory and strength. He is being supported by one of the dynasty’s remaining loyal orders, the Lionheart Knights. This order is a thorn in the side of those who are scheming and plotting to overthrow the King and who will stop at nothing to get the faithful Callaway out of the picture. This situation is at its clearest in the instance ‘Dungeon of Dalanis’. Players can delve into this dungeon after the main release of the third chapter in May. Another setting for these power struggles is the stately stronghold of ‘Aren’ in the hills – the seat of power of one of the six principalities fighting for more control.
The task for the player is to support King Callaway in the battle against the insurgents and their foreboding schemes in the Thunderhoof Hills. Frogster has published the first screenshots today. They can be found on our website as well as further information on the new region: http://www.runesofmagic.com/en/chapter3.html

The history of PC gaming is littered with many well-known and highly regarded titles, but what about the titles you mightn't have heard of? This list of the top games in the history of the PC includes the usual suspects, such as Half-Life and Doom, but also some often overlooked PC games including such classics as Elite, the space trading RPG developed in 1984 by two college friends from Cambridge for the Acorn and BB Micro systems. The game used a truly elegant programming hack to create over 200 different worlds to explore while using 32kb of memory, all with 3D wireframes. Also in the list is Robot War, which required players to actually code the participants, and one of the first online multiplayer RPGs, Neverwinter Nights, which introduced many of the developer and user behaviors, such as custom guilds, that have made modern RPGs so popular."
What's your favorite classic game that always gets overlooked in these kinds of lists? My vote goes for Star Control 2.
