Game engine developer BitSquid, and game developer Fatshark, both based in Stockholm, Sweden, today jointly announced “StoneGiant”, a demo designed to showcase the power of Microsoft DirectX 11 technology.
StoneGiant allows consumers to test the overall performance of their consumer-based GPUs. Based on the BitSquid Tech, StoneGiant has primarily been used to test the tools and technology in a real-world production environment with the talented artists of Fatshark. Starting today, press can request to download the beta version of StoneGiant (contact stonegiant@bitsquid.se), with the public StoneGiant demo expected to be released in two weeks.
“With DX11 hardware becoming more readily available, we decided now would be a good time to highlight the advanced features of our engine, including DX11 and tessellation support,” said Tobias Persson, Lead Engineer at BitSquid. “Tessellation adds an awful lot to the visual fidelity of the scene and is something that consumers can readily see for themselves. We are looking forward to seeing how games will take advantage of our engine.”
BitSquid Tech is available for licensing soon for the PC, with PS3 and Xbox360 versions available by Q3 of 2010.

Blitz 1UP has partnered with AirPlay to bring award-winning IP SUPER YUM YUM to PC for its third outing.
SUPER YUM YUM is an award-winning mobile game with loveable characters, addictive gameplay and brain-tingling puzzles. Two iterations of the franchise launched in 2004 and 2006 and more than one million people have now played the game worldwide, on almost all major mobile network operators in Europe, North America and Japan.
And now SUPER YUM YUM: PUZZLE ADVENTURES, developed by Regolith Games, is making its debut on PC. Star as Leon the Chameleon in the fruit-licking, colour-changing, puzzle-solving adventure across four worlds and 36 levels.
In SUPER YUM YUM: PUZZLE ADVENTURES the pesky fruit monster Ms Tum Tum has broken her bikini diet plans and gobbled Leon’s stash of juicy fruit. Leon must eat his way through fruity, fiendish puzzles, licking fruit to change colour and choosing the right combinations of fruit to finish each level. Leon must also rescue his babies along the way.
• Easy to pick up and play
• Deceptively simple and original gameplay
• Free from stress-inducing enemies
• Adorable characters
• Bite-sized gameplay with constant progression
• Eat just enough to progress or complete each level perfectly
• Four mini-game interludes
• Intro/outro cutscenes with special ending for perfect play
• 10 to 15 hours estimated playing time.
Chris Swan, Blitz 1UP Business Development Director, says: “We're delighted to be partnering with AirPlay to bring the SUPER YUM YUM franchise to PC. The team have created a charming and very original puzzle game that I'm certain will appeal to a very wide market on this platform."
Adds AirPlay’s Ian Masters: “Ever since SUPER YUM YUM first launched on mobile we always hoped Leon the Chameleon would one day make it to the big screen; or at least to one bigger than a coaster. Now with the support of Blitz 1UP, it's finally happening and we're as pleased as a particularly fruity punch about it.”

Due to the recent exploit in Firefox, Germany has warned against its use. This comes a couple months after Germany advised against using IE. Perhaps we should start taking odds as to which browser will be next."
Note: the warning (from the Federal Office for Information Security) is provisional, and should be rendered moot by the release later this month of 3.6.2.

Analyst Michael Pachter has said he believes that PC gaming is in decline and he places the blame squarely on improved capabilities of consoles, which he says can outmatch most PCs.
"The PC Market if you think about it as packaged products sold - not subscriptions like World of Warcraft - it's only like 6 or 7 per cent of total game sales," he stated during his Pach-Attack segment on GameTrailers. "It's becoming a declining industry because you can get a near PC experience on a console."
He continued: "The PS3 is a pretty powerful box, and it is probably more powerful than 90 per cent of PC's out there. The 360 is probably more powerful than 85 per cent of PC's out there."
Pachter went onto comment that consoles were the best place for developers and publish to make games for, saying they had the largest audience
"You say 'no no there's a billion PCs out there' but there aren't a billion PC gamers. PC game sales tell you that that number is a very small number."
I'm not sure it's fair to discount MMOs when talking about PC Gaming, but what do you think about the state of PC gaming?

March 22nd, 2010, 21:53 Posted By: wraggster
Gamers have been experiencing problems playing Command & Conquer 4 - an issue which seems to be due to the game's DRM requirement of a permanent internet connection.
The game's official forum has been flooded with complaints following the game's release on Friday, with people experiencing connection difficulties, firewall compatibility problems and crashes which result in lost save data.
Eurogamer readers have also reported problems. As the site noted in its review, C&C4's DRM - which works similarly to Ubisoft's unpopular system - means a user must be connected to the internet at all times when playing.
"Just like Ubisoft's contempt-to-the-max DRM system, this will kick you out if your net connection drops for any reason - even in single-player," said the review.
EA's community manager responded to problems being reported by forum members over the weekend, and a patch to address issues with the English and Russians versions of the game has now been released.

March 22nd, 2010, 20:56 Posted By: wraggster
Iceberg Interactive and Ntronium Games have announced that they have struck a deal, with Iceberg securing the rights to publish Armada 2526 in European retail. Armada 2526 is an exciting and deep hybrid ‘4x’ space strategy game for PC. The game is currently in its final tweaking stage and set for a retail release in June 2010 across Europe.
Iceberg Interactive CEO Erik Schreuder says: “We are really looking forward to once again step into the world of 4x space strategy with this challenging and great looking strategy game. Be ready to conquer the universe not just by sheer force, but by cunningly negotiating with alien races until you are strong enough to defeat them.”
Ntronium Games CEO Bob Smith says: “We are extremely pleased to be working with a veteran publishing team like the people at Iceberg, who have played and successfully published in the 4x genre before. Exciting times lie ahead when we will see localized boxed versions of our game on European store shelves.”
About Armada 2526
Armada 2526 continues the great tradition of space opera games. You guide your race from its first interstellar journeys, until it becomes a mighty galactic empire. Along the way, you'll explore the galaxy, conduct research, diplomacy and trade, find new colonies, maneuver mighty star fleets, and fight epic battles.
Although the game is complex, and the possible strategies endless, powerful help and advisor features, help you get up to speed quickly. Unlike many games in this genre, Armada 2526 focuses on providing a game that can be finished in a reasonable time, and emphasizes battle and strategy over economic micro-management.
The game consists of two sections. The Star Map is where you run your empire: manage your colonies, deploy your fleets, do research, and conduct diplomacy. It uses a turn based system, so you can take as long as you wish to plan your actions. However, once battle is joined, you switch to the battle module and fight it out in a real-time 3D system that brings to life the beauty and visceral carnage of space combat.

March 21st, 2010, 20:54 Posted By: wraggster
Lionhead's boss and Fable-creator, Peter Molynuex, has said he believes that PC gaming is in the process of being reborn - with upstart Facebook games changing how players expect to interact with videogames.
"I was born on PC," he told Switched. "The PC was this thing that was completely open-ended. That felt great and when I skipped over to the consoles it felt like being slightly imprisoned by this box... But hey guess what? Now they keep giving us this new hardware stuff. Natal and Move... it feels a bit more PCish."
He continued: "The surprising thing about the PC, that is just starting to happen now, is that gaming is being reborn on the PC."
"You've got things like Facebook, everyone's talking about Facebook games. There's this company called Zynga and they've made these Facebook games, 88 million people [play them], and everybody who's making these big opus epics are jealous looking at these Zynga new kids on the block."
"It feels like everything that has evolved in gaming is all changing at the moment. It's changing radically," Molynuex said, explaining why he thought Facebook games could attract large audiences.
"We all want to suggest things to our friends, we want to involve our friends... there is a very interesting future there. Just the very fact that you can show off a little bit, in Farmville's case you can show off your farm. I think there is a real rich future there and I don't see why all types of games, from enormous triple-A blockbusters to the smallest ones can't incorporate that level of interaction."
Molyneux also commented on Fable III, saying that Lionhead wanted to upset gamers' expectations with a different experience than the prior two titles had.
"We could make Fable III like any sequel ... but I think we need to surprise people," he said.

Microsoft has announced service packs for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2, but declined to set a release date or a schedule for getting a beta in users' hands. A company spokesman said Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) will primarily contain 'minor updates,' including patches and hotfixes that will have been delivered earlier via the Windows Update service, rather than new features. One of the latter: an updated Remote Desktop client designed to work with RemoteFX, the new remote-access platform set to debut in SP1 for Windows Server 2008 R2. Windows Server 2008 R2 will also be upgraded to SP1, Microsoft said, presumably at the same time as Windows 7 since the two operating systems share a single code base. Besides RemoteFX — which Microsoft explained Wednesday in an entry on the Windows virtualization team's blog — Server 2008 R2 will also include a feature dubbed 'Dynamic Memory,' which lets IT staff adjust guest virtual machines' memory on the fly. Microsoft did not spell out a timetable for the service packs, saying only that it would provide more information as release milestones approach.

description
It is the year 2062 and humanity is at the brink of extinction. Tiberium, the mysterious, alien crystalline structure that has infested Earth for decades and served as the primary reason for years of relentless conflict between the Global Defense Initiative (GDI) and the Brotherhood of Nod, is close to rendering the planet uninhabitable. Mankind is on the verge of extinction when Kane, Nod's prophetic leader, emerges from seclusion to deliver GDI the message that he has developed a system that could control Tiberium and harness its power. But he cannot build this "Tiberium Control Network" without GDI's cooperation. Thus, the two opposing factions – GDI and Nod – inevitably find themselves in desperation for the same cause: to stop Tiberium from extinguishing mankind.
After 15 years, the network is nearly complete, Tiberium is under strict control and our revitalized, newly terraformed planet is on the cusp of a new age of prosperity and progress. It is then that the world's citizens begin to seriously ponder why Kane chose to help, and what will he want in return. These questions and more lead to the dramatic final act of the Tiberium saga.
