FreeCol is an open source project that aims to provide a free Colonization clone. FreeCol is released under the GPL.
Quote:
FreeCol 0.9.2 has been released.
This is a bug/feature-fix release, the main changes being:
* The increased native land claims in 0.9.1 have been reverted to the more moderate 0.9.0 behaviour, following comment that this made the game too difficult. This feature will be back in a later release, but only after implementing the feature that at least exempts your first colony from having to buy its land (as was the case with the original Colonization).
* Fixed a serious bug in privateer combat.
No new features were introduced with this release, and saved games from previous 0.9.x versions should remain compatible. We hope this release will provide a stable, playable and enjoyable version of FreeCol.

Free42 is a complete re-implementation of the HP-42S scientific programmable RPN calculator, was made from 1988 until 1995 by Hewlett-Packard and the HP-82240 printer. Free42 was written from scratch, without using any HP code. You do not need any ROM images in order to use it, yet it is fully HP-42S compatible.
Quote:
Free42 HISTORY
30-03-2010: release 1.4.64
* Implemented some more Time Module functions: DATE+, DDAYS, and DOW.
28-03-2010: release 1.4.63
* iPhone version: implemented ACCEL, LOCAT, and HEADING functions, for querying
the device´s accelerometer, location services (GPS on the 3G and 3GS; WiFi-
based on all other models), and compass (3GS only).
* All versions except Mac Dashboard: for skins, increased the maximum macro
length from 31 to 63. The old limit was too small to allow macros that step
forward all the way to the end of the FCN catalog, and supporting such macros
is necessary now that the length of the FCN catalog is no longer fixed at 42
rows.
* Also, changed several macros in the HP-41 and HP42CY skins where the FCN
catalog was being traversed backwards, replacing N repetitions of "up" with
42-N repetitions of "down", so they will work correctly in the presence of an
extended FCN catalog. (None of the other skins currently in the Free42
repository traverse the FCN catalog backwards, so they don´t need updating.)
* PalmOS version: turning off printing did not flush the GIF file, so you´d end
up with a truncated image. Fixed.
* When COMPLEX is executed with a complex number or complex matrix in X, and
POLAR mode is active, it is possible for range errors to occur. Free42 would
simply substitute POS_HUGE_VAL in such cases, but that was incorrect; it
should report Out of Range or substitute POS_HUGE_VAL depending on the
setting of flag 24. Fixed.
* R/S can now be pressed using the PC keyboard even when ALPHA mode is active.

eWeek reports that the data Apple collects about users from its iPhone is so valuable that the company may build its own iPhone-centric search engine just to keep Google from gleaning insight from that data. 'The data generated on the iPhone OS platform must become an increasing priority for Apple and we believe the company has the resources to develop its own products in both maps and search in the next five years,' writes analyst Gene Munster. Google is currently the default search engine on the iPhone, but Google has increasingly encroached on Apple's mobile turf, offering the Android operating system and several mobile applications. As the search provider for the iPhone, Google sees what iPhone users are searching for, which can help it tailor software and services for its own mobile smartphones — a competitive advantage that has not gone unnoticed by Apple. Apple lacks the experience and engineering wherewithal to build a large, scalable search engine, but Munster says Apple could buy a search startup with a Web index, such as Cuil or Taptu, and use its index as the seed for its own search engine. 'Apple is in an inside position to tap into the current pent-up demand for better mobile search, and add a new competitive differentiation from other search providers and device makers,' adds IDC analyst Hadley Reynolds.

Today BioWare unveiled the most impressive new class yet seen for their upcoming MMO, Star Wars: The Old Republic. Sarlacc Enforcers are "paragons of patience and planning, always waiting for the right moment to pounce on their quarry – even if it takes one thousand years." Gamespot had an interview with the game's developers to get a clear picture on how such a unique and innovative class was designed. Quoting: "Well, this is a stealth class, so the soloing experience of the Sarlacc enforcer is going to be a little slow. [This character] spends a lot of time slowly sneaking into position before unleashing potent close-ranged attacks, such as 'devour.' But once exposed, the enforcer heavily relies on companion characters to lure enemies close, so he/it can unleash his/its close-ranged attacks. However, the enforcer shines in a group, especially when paired with a Jedi consular that can knock enemies toward him. At this point, the Sarlacc enforcer can use his/its powerful suite of damage-over-time abilities, like 'digest' and 'regurgitate

A trio of Google engineers have ported id Software's gib-filled first-person shooter Quake II to browsers — you know, for kicks — as a way to show just what HTML5-compatible web browsers are capable of. According to the developers, 'We started with the existing Jake2 Java port of the Quake II engine, then used the Google Web Toolkit (along with WebGL, WebSockets, and a lot of refactoring) to cross-compile it into JavaScript.' More details are available on one developer's blog, and installation instructions have been posted as well.

Ubisoft's Settlers 7 servers have been causing problems for over a week for users worldwide, and Australian gamers are hardly able to connect at all. 'The problem reportedly strikes after the game has already confirmed an active Internet connection, and prevents the user from playing even the single-player campaign, returning the error "server not available." But they are available, because other people are logged into them and merrily playing away.' Wonder how they're going to describe this one as an attack.

Vamman writes with a followup to news from 2009 that MekTek.net was going to release MechWarrior 4 for free after obtaining permission from Smith & Tinker, who licensed the MechWarrior rights from Microsoft. Now, almost a year later, the free release has yet to see the light of day, in large part due to Microsoft. Quoting:
"... the Free Release is held up at Microsoft and it is unknown to us and our studio when the Free Release will be given the final go ahead. Due to the demands placed upon us by industry lawyers to release the Mechwarrior4 Free release we were forced to insure our studio at a premium rate to meet the Microsoft standard. Our insurance policy is a one year lease and we are unable to tap out of this policy until next fall. In addition to our insurance costs we are also struggling with our server costs. Currently, our server fund has run dry and staff and beta members are paying out of their pockets to help keep MekTek online. At this point we don't know from month to month if we will be able to stay online."
Vamman adds, "MekTek has released a major update for their existing community, expansion MekPak 3.1. They are also promising their new expansion, MekPak 4, in a few weeks as open beta!

Shacknews wraps up a developer panel at PAX East discussing the future of gaming on the PC. They cover topics including DRM, digital download platforms and cloud-based gaming services.
"Joe Kreiner of Terminal Reality: 'If you look at it from a giant publisher perspective, then the numbers on the PC just really don't make financial sense for you to bother with it. But if you start out with the mindset — you know, you're targeting that group, you make a niched product that's going [to] do well, if you look at a lot of the titles on Steam, Torchlight's a really good example — as long as you know that's your audience to begin with, and you make something inside of a budget that you know you're going to be selling those kinds of numbers, you can be very successful. I think it just takes a targeted developer. ... There is no [PC] platform, really. It's just a mish-mosh of hardware, an operating system that kind of supports games. The problem with that platform is, there's no standards and piracy is rampant, so why would we want to make a video game for that platform unless you had some sort of draconian DRM thing to keep it from being stolen?"

Sega has claimed that PC game sales are not fairly reflected by industry figures.
Speaking to MCV, Sega UK managing director John Clark said that digital sales from companies such as Steam needed to be taken into account for a full picture.
"The PC market is third in terms of its year-on-year performance with a decline of 26 per cent, but this doesn't really reflect the full picture," said Clark.
"The PC digital download business is now a viable sector but somewhat invisible as it's not yet covered by Chart-Track. The PC market overall is actually performing much better than is currently reported and remains a vital and strong sector to be involved in.
"Last month's PC chart illustrates Sega's position within this sector. Napoleon: Total War, Football Manager 2010 and Aliens vs Predator are three different styles of game from three different genres. They can all drive a strong, community fan base with the ability to consistently deliver endless hours of gameplay. Incidentally, they are all developed in the UK.
"For 2009, Sega was ranked the second biggest PC publisher in the market. In 2010 year-to-date, we are once again ranked second. Long may it continue."

April 6th, 2010, 17:19 Posted By: wraggster
Market intelligence firm, Niko Partners, has released some of the findings from its latest report into China's videogames industry, predicting that the online games business in the country will be worth an estimated $9.2 billion in 2014.
That's up from £3.57 billion in 2009 and a predicted $4.5 billion for this calendar year, working on the basis of a compound annual growth rate of 20.9 per cent over the next five years.
"While the global economic downturn hurt videogame publishers in much of the world, China's online game industry reflected no pain in 2009 and gamers continued to embrace online games as the best inexpensive source of social entertainment available," said Lisa Cosmas Hanson, managing partner of Niko Partners.
"While the era of online gaming is generating lots of interest and growth opportunity in the West, China is one of the countries where online gaming is a well established market segment that extends its reach to more and more Chinese consumers every year."
The report also looks into the successful business models in the region, and found that 63 per cent of gamers surveyed had increased their online games spend in the past year, while 65 per cent of gamers use internet cafes at least part of the time.
It's also estimated that the number of online gamers in China will grow from 68 million in 2009 to 141 million in 2014.

April 6th, 2010, 17:15 Posted By: wraggster
Mind Candy CEO Michael Acton Smith has said that social gaming is "absolutely not" in a bubble, pointing out key differences between companies like Playfish and ones that experienced rapid growth during the dot.com era.
"The reason Club Penguin and Playfish went for such multiples is because they are profitable businesses generating substantial revenue," said Acton Smith. "I was involved in the first dot.com boom back in the 1990s and companies were valued at crazy amounts on multiples of users. This time it's multiples of revenue and that is not bubble - that is solid hard fact. So I think we've got a long way to go."
Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz at a party held by Mind Candy to celebrate reaching 15 million registered users in its rapidly-growing online kids game Moshi Monsters, Acton Smith added that the virtual goods business in the Far East is turning over more than $5 billion annually, with the biggest online gaming company there valued at several billion dollars.
"Why on earth are you not seeing that in the West? We're seeing huge amounts of growth and we're still in the very early days," he pointed out.
"This free-to-play model is incredibly powerful," he continued. "[Players] can sign up and pay for as much as they want either through micro-transactions or through a subscription.
"There are no costs involved because it's all digital content. So we welcome with open arms new players signing up and if one per cent sign up to pay - great. If 10 per cent or 20 per cent sign up - even better. And for these games, because they're so, relatively, cheap to run, you only need a couple of per cent to pay for it to be wildly profitable.
"It's a really amazing business. We have gross margins of about 90 per cent, we deal directly with the end consumer. There's no retailers, there's no distributors, there's no money paid to be listed in a store - all these things the traditional boxed videogame industry suffers. It's an incredibly wonderful, efficient business and it's working very well for us so far."
Acton Smith added that he thinks online gaming will continue to grow going forward to eventually take over as the prevalent method of game delivery. "It's gaming as a service rather than out of the box," he said.
"This is how most of our kid and teenage and older audiences want to consume entertainment content, so I think that the consoles and traditional gaming companies are going to find it tough going forward unless they rethink their business models and put online right at the forefront of their strategy. And, of course, many are trying, but it's a bit of a tricky transition period."
And while he doesn't predict the imminent demise of the console business, he does say that the industry is driven by the consumer, and that consumer is looking increasingly unhappy with spending hundreds of pounds on a games consoles then up to £50 for a game when there are cheaper, simpler, more sociable gaming experiences available for free online.
"Graphics may not be as amazing, the experiences - gaming-wise - might not be as high-fidelity, but they can have more fun - and ultimately that's the most important thing, that's what people will pay for," he said.
Going forward, Moshi Monsters will continue to expand with a move onto portable devices, said Acton Smith.
Mind Candy is chatting to companies at the moment about a DS game, he said, and in the process of working on an iPhone and iPad version for its users.

According reportedly leaked information from 'undisclosed Activisions sources', the PC version of Call Of Duty 7 will be getting dedicated servers.
The lack of dedicated servers in last year's Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 upset a small army of PC gamers.
According to Tek9's source, 'Call of Duty 7: Black Ops' will also feature the popular zombie mode from predecessor CoD: World At War, in which players get to shoot down hordes of the undead.
The site adds: 'Last but not least, dedicated servers will also be part of the new Call of Duty game, much to the delight of PC gamers across the world. After Activision fired Vince Zampella and Jason West from Infinity Ward, it seems like they are taking yet another step back from the direction they had taken with Modern Warfare 2 by re-adding dedicated servers."
Again, we'll check in with Activision to see what the publisher says...

Ubisoft has offered customers a free game to apologise for the digital rights management issues (DRM) that have afflicted its recent PC titles, Kotaku reports.
Strict DRM on games including Assassin’s Creed II and Silent Hunter 5 have resulted in attacks on verification servers, making it impossible for some gamers to access their purchases.
To compensate players, the publisher has launched a promotion offering Assassin's Creed II owners the ability to claim a free downloadable game or DLC for the title.
Customers who wish to claim the free game can choose from Prince Of Persia, Heroes Over Europe, EndWar and H.A.W.X.. Those who qualify for the bonus gift will receive an email explaining how to claim it.
