Right on time for its first birthday on 19th March 2010, the free to play online role play game Runes of Magic is able to announce the reaching of another milestone: Three million registered users in the USA and Europe are now exploring the game world Taborea.
Players on 23 servers in six different language versions have to date experienced more than 500 million quests in the fantasy world. To facilitate this the Berlin-based localisation team has translated over 4.5 million words for the European languages alone. Whether in the UK, Spain, France, Poland, Germany or the US − the desire for a communal gaming experience is the same in every country. Thus players join together worldwide to form guilds, build their own castles and go into battle against other player groups, or overcome sinister boss opponents. Over 7.5 million of these dangerous creatures have been defeated in one year by brave adventurers using their united powers. The Demon Lord – the powerful top villain of the first two chapters – has had his wings clipped just 24 times.
On the three million accounts for Runes of Magic fans have created approximately six million characters. Attempts by so-called 'Gold Sellers' to endanger the game economy were dealt with severely by Frogster's Support department: in the past four months alone, more than 15,600 accounts of illegal sellers have been permanently excluded from the game.
A video which is being released today presents a roundup of the Runes of Magic feature palette which has been regularly extended with free updates on a monthly cycle. The video and more information about the one year birthday festivities can be found on the official website: http://www.runesofmagic.com/en/one-y...niversary.html. Among other things, for today only, there is a free pet for all players who log on.

Tycoon Games, developers of several award-winning dating sims and visual novels, has just released the voiced version of their latest game, Heileen 2: The Hands Of Fate.
This update adds hours of voiced content to one of Tycoon Games' longest games to date. Like many of its Japanese counterparts, this visual novel leaves the main character unvoiced, but a team of seven voice actors has worked hard for several months to bring life to the rest of the cast including Black the cat, Marie, Lora, Otto, Robert, Ebele and many more.
Previous customers can redownload the game for free, while new users can try the new voiced demo at the official game page:

Jagex Games Studio, the UK’s largest independent games company, today announced that its first third-party publishing title War of Legends has achieved rapid acceleration in popularity during the game’s beta phase, which launched in January 2010. With hundreds of thousands of players already joining the battle, War of Legends has already significantly changed the landscape of real-time strategy gaming.
“It is great to see so many players flock to War of Legends so soon after its launch and it is especially encouraging to see entire alliances independently migrate from other RTS games to War of Legends” said Mark Gerhard, CEO at Jagex Games Studio. “Jagex has a long standing reputation for offering unparalleled browser-based game play, and War of Legends is no exception to this commitment. With the game’s extensive content, high quality graphics and ease of levelling it is clear to see why so many players have been enticed to the game and we are confident that as the game evolves War of Legends will cement its position as the must play RTS game.”
War of Legends is a flash-based RTS game based on ancient Chinese mythology, which immerses players in a world where they can build vast empires, appoint legendary leaders and form multi-player alliances to reach eternal glory. This rich back-story is a drastic contrast to traditional RTS games that typically have very fragmented or non-existent storylines. The development quality far exceeds that of similar titles currently in the market, and parallels Jagex’s high standard for game excellence, depth of content, graphics and community support.
“The response from the War of Legends community has been overwhelmingly positive” said Mark Gregson, War of Legends’ Community Manager at Jagex. “Players are really enjoying the depth of game play, which is missing from other browser-based RTS games, and our reputation for integrity, community support and high quality gaming has positioned War of Legends as the leading free to play RTS. It has been fascinating to watch as players build up their cities, create alliances and command their armies into battle. Our dedicated community team are planning an ongoing series of in-game events to challenge and test our players and we can’t wait to welcoming more players as they join the War of Legends community.”
War of Legends is available to play for free by visiting www.waroflegends.com.

NPD has released its monthly list of the top 20 PC games, and while Star Trek Online made a valiant showing in the month of its debut, landing at number two for the main game and number four for the collector's edition, it was beaten in the end by the Sims 3: High End Loft Stuff (yes, "Stuff") content pack. The Sims juggernaut of a brand continued to rock the top 20, claiming six spots total, and perennial favorite World of Warcraft continued to place almost all of its current editions on the list in three different spots.
Other big titles in February were Bioshock 2, the Everquest II: Sentinel's Fate expansion, and Mass Effect 2. Aliens vs. Predator appeared at a miserable number 19, below something called the Mumbo Jumbo Assortment. Full list after the break. We'll say this about PC game players: They know what they like, and they stick with it.

The Steam edition of Battlefield: Bad Company 2 will ditch SecuROM in an upcoming game patch. Valve's own authentication service will be used instead.
The update, version 522175, is imminent. Apparently there's a bit of extra QA on Steam to bypass.
All non-Steam users can download the patch now. Unfortunately, a few problems appear to have cropped up; members of the BFBC2 forum report crashes to desktop after installing the update, and some are having account login issues.

An exploit writer at Core Security Technologies has discovered a serious vulnerability that exposes users of Microsoft's Virtual PC virtualization software to malicious hacker attacks. The vulnerability, which is unpatched, essentially allows an attacker to bypass several major security mitigations — DEP, SafeSEH and ASLR — to exploit the Windows operating system. As a result, some applications with bugs that are not exploitable when running in a not-virtualized operating system are rendered exploitable if running within a guest OS in Virtual PC.

Internet research firm Hitwise just broke the news: last week, Facebook attracted 7.07 percent of the internet traffic in the USA, compared to 7.03 percent for Google. This is the first time google.com has been out of the top spot since it surpassed MySpace in 2007, and reflects a change in the way people use internet. They tend to privilege social interaction sites above 'passive' search engines."
Facebook still has a ways to go if you include Google's non-search properties, which bring the total up to 11.03% of traffic.

Horacio Gutierrez, Microsoft's Corporate Vice President and Deputy General Counsel, has just published a piece called 'Apple v. HTC: A Step Along the Path of Addressing IP Rights in Smartphones.' In it, he notes that today's smartphones are all about the 'software stack,' not the 'radio stack,' and that 'as the IP situation settles in this space and licensing takes off, we will see the patent royalties applicable to the smartphone software stack settle at a level that reflects the increasing importance software has as a portion of the overall value of the device. In the interim, though, we should expect continued activity.' That 'activity' obviously means lawsuits against those producing those software stacks, and Gutierrez seems to be hinting strongly that Microsoft intends to join in. So where does that leave all the Linux-based stacks such as the increasingly-popular Android? Is this just a clever way for Microsoft to start a patent war on Linux without appearing to do so?

Blizzard, not short of things to do, has burped out a patch for Warcraft III - a game eight years old.
The update fixes "tower hack", "summon/cooldown hack", "new crash hack", "phoenix hack" and " sheep hack" exploits.
Full patch notes are on the Blizzard support site, as are sign-posts to download locations.
Long-tail support like this is common for Blizzard, whose old games like Warcraft III, StarCraft and Diablo II still attract a loyal following.

At its Mix 10 conference Tuesday, Microsoft gave programmers, Web developers, and the world at large a taste of things to come with its Web browser. Specifically, Microsoft released what it's calling the Internet Explorer 9 Platform Preview, a prototype designed to show off the company's effort to improve how the browser deals with the Web as it exists today and, as important, to add support for new Web technologies that are coming right now. Coming in the new version is support for new Web standards including plug-in-free video; better performance with graphics, text, and JavaSript by taking advantage of modern computing hardware. One big change in the JavaScript engine Hachamovitch is proud of is its multicore support. As soon as a Web page is loaded, Chakra assigns a processing core to the task of compiling JavaScript in the background into fast code written in the native language of the computer's processor."
Microsoft didn't say what codec they were using for the HTML5 video demo, but the Technologizer says it's H.264.

March 16th, 2010, 20:43 Posted By: wraggster
David Perry has pointed out the drawbacks of cloud gaming service OnLive compared to his own Gaikai service, due to launch later this year, in the wake of OnLive's pricing and strategy announcements at this year's GDC.
Although OnLive players can rent games and try free demos, they are being asked to pay for their PC games on top of a $14.99 subscription, a pricing strategy that some are suggesting will hold back any significant growth.
"It's very different to OnLive," he told GamesIndustry.biz. "We're not trying to replace the consoles.
"[OnLive] have done an amazing job with the user interface [but] the cost per data centre to do all of that streaming is very expensive. That's why they have a subscription. Would you pay $15 a month for it? You're paying for the games on top of the service. You're paying $15 only to have the opportunity to buy the games. $15 gives you no games. If you decide, 'I don't want to keep paying that subscription', you've just lost access to your games bought at full price," he said.
"We were just as surprised as everyone else when we heard the final business model. That's why it's a shot in the arm to us because now we're just perfectly positioned. You can play Call of Duty over there for $15 or you can come here and try it for nothing. When you buy it from us, you own it, for the rest of your life. When you buy it from over there you have to keep paying a subscription to keep access to it."
Far from trying to replace the console market or create a distribution channel with Gaikai, Perry said the company would be happy to stream the service onto console platforms.
"Why wouldn't we?" he asked, adding that Gaikai could stream onto anything with a screen, internet connection and form of input, potentially including internet-connected TVs.
"Our target is for websites like yours - wouldn't it be great if when you write about something [your readers] can try it right there? Instead of us marketing and trying to drive all the customers to a certain URL - like OnLive for example, they have to buy every player and convince them to come to a certain place on the internet.
"It's better when they're reading an article that - bam - it says, 'do you want to try it now?' The publisher would like that. The game might not even be ready for release so you'd be looking at an early preview. We can run it on our servers, they can experience it on your site, and they can make a pre-order to EA.
"So you win, you get a demo you could never have had before. The gamer gets to play something they could never have played before, and EA gets a pre-order a year in advance. Life is good for everyone."
Online retailers such as Amazon will also be kept happy, said Perry, since sales can be made through them as well as directly via publishers.
He gave other examples of how the technology could be used too - including for demos of applications such as PhotoShop and for beta testing of games - the advantage being there would be no code to be potentially hacked or pirated.
He also spoke about Twitter compatibility. Users will be able to post the URL of the game they're in for their friends to try out, he said. And a longer term goal was to work with publishers so that a user's friends will be placed into the game in the exact same spot as they are in.
"Say I discovered Starcraft's beta first out of all of my friends, I can tweet it out and say 'I'm in Starcraft right now' and, one click, and they're all in the game too with me. That's unbelievably compatible with the marketing needs of the publisher. And you're super cool because you've got all your friends into the beta without them having to beg for keys, registering or anything.
"If a publisher works with us, we'll actually teleport them to exactly where you stand because we can give where you are in with the link. You'll see all these people appearing around you who are your friends. That's what we'd like to get to - it's longer term, publishers need to buy into it, but we think that would be awesome."
Perry added that the toughest challenges Gaikai had faced were now solved. A deal just struck with TriplePoint - a company that has funded servers for Facebook and YouTube - will fund Gaikai's own expanding network of servers, starting in the US.
"They have no fear of size and, for them, this is an exciting company because it could buy a lot of servers."
Meanwhile, Benchmark Capital - whose partners include Gaikai board member Mitch Lasky - is funding the business and a deal the company is currently working on will grant it deals with a majority of internet service providers.
The issue of partnering with networks in order to ship data around has been a problem even bigger than the one associated with latency and data centres, said Perry. "Whoever you're paying your cable bill to, we want them to be connected directly to our servers so the data path can be as fast as it can possibly be, and that's really hard.
"The deal we're working on gets us 900 of those deals already in place. And that would be years of negotiation to get that done. That should put us in a very good position, where the data problem is pretty much solved for us. We're 80 per cent done - the hardest part is now solved as far as I'm concerned."
The 300 data centres around the US Gaikai is planning to launch with will give far greater coverage to users than the service's two rivals, Otoy and OnLive, added Perry.
"Otoy is planning to go for very large super computers. When you use super computers you can only afford a few data centres - they're so expensive. It's really cool technology, but the distances they're dealing with are huge.
"And then you have OnLive with five data centres, and they have a Powerpoint slide with five data centres on it with big circles around them, but the internet isn't wired that way with little lines going out and big circles around data centres. You're going to get strange kidney shapes, or mushroom shapes - it'll look like Tetris pieces the real coverage you're going to get."
Alongside the news of TriplePoint's backing, Perry also said the company has secured a former Google executive - the appointment will be formally announced in the next week.
"I contacted him and asked if he'd move to a start-up and he said, 'no, not in a million years'. He had a stake in Google. Then I sent him an account and he emailed back to say it was an incredible proof of concept but he still wasn't going to take the job.
"The next day he emailed again and said, 'you're not going to believe this but my wife is in love with Spore now. So he goes, 'I'm going to take the job'. And the reason is that he realised she would never have bought Spore or downloaded it or even have heard of it before."
The primary appeal of Gaikai to publishers will be a reduction in the costs of their advertising and getting their games to potential buyers, said Perry.
"Normally when you're paying for someone to come and try the product, if they don't like it all that money you've spent getting them through the install and the registration is lost. About $3 would be a typical number.
"In our situation, we sell server time to people so if someone goes to a site and clicks then they don't like it and abort, it's cost 1 cent. So it's a complete game changer as far as the pricing goes. We're expecting all publishers to want to give this a whirl. The idea that all software and all applications can be anywhere with a 1 cent failure rate is really why we're getting excited."
OnLive announced its release date - June 17 in the US - last week, but Gaikai has refrained from confirming its own roll-out date. However, Perry did say that E3 would be when the company starts handing out accounts to the proper network, and a release date then seems likely.
"We've been dragging our heels just a little waiting for a new chip to come out from Intel," he said. "All the major publishers already have accounts and are testing it right now. At E3 we'll have a pretty strong network up and running."
Apparently unconcerned by OnLive's movements he added: "In a weird way I actually want them to be successful because it's a good thing if streaming gets a really good reputation, so I actually want them to succeed.
"It's healthy competition but we have very different strategies and it's all going to shake itself out over the next 18 months, say. In 18 months let's sit down and see what happened. It's going to be interesting."

Facebook says it is "aggressively disabling" applications that claim to allow users to see who is viewing their profile.
It has also confirmed that the programmes do not work and won't allow access to private information.
Several variants of the so-called "stalker apps" have appeared on Facebook in recent days.
Unwitting users have helped spread the rogue software by attempting to install it.
Among the applications that have now disappeared from the site are "Stalker Check", and "Who has visited my profile".
They claim to show users who, among their friends, is regularly visiting their page.
In a statement, Facebook said: "Don't believe any applications that claim they can show you who's viewing your profile or photo. They can't."
Our philosophy is that having an open system anyone can participate in is generally better

Our philosophy is that having an open system anyone can participate in is generally better
Facebook Founder Mark Zuckerberg
Most of the stalker apps appear to have been created to generate cash for their designers.
Facebook's Head of European Policy, Richard Allan, said: "Applications try to attract users in and try to get people to install them.
"Once a large number of users have installed that application, they can try to offer services like advertising that will make money."
However, there remains the potential for victims to be directed to sites containing viruses and other malicious software.
It has, once again, raised the question of Facebook introducing an application vetting process, along the lines of Apple's App Store system.
Speaking to Newsbeat in March 2009, Facebook Founder Mark Zuckerberg rejected the idea.
He said: "There will occasionally be some applications that people don't like.
"Our philosophy is that having an open system anyone can participate in is generally better."

The closed beta for EA's MMO racer, Need for Speed World has begun.
Over the course of the next few months, "thousands of players worldwide" will have the opportunity to claim a slot for the trial by enlisting on its official website, says EA.
EA producer, John Doyle claims the game is "the world's first MMO racer." He says: "We have expanded Need for Speed's classic adrenaline fueled racing with an all-new power up system and deep RPG style progression to create a truly massive, socially-connected white-knuckle Need for Speed experience."
The official blurb reads: "For the first time in a racing game, players will be able to compete against any one of their friends, family or pick from thousands of top ranked players to challenge in intense online battles and police pursuits across 150 miles of sprawling open world."
