A series of three South Korean teaser adverts has emerged, hinting at pre-launch hype for the release of StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty.
The three humorous TV adverts all carry Korean Air branding, but are clearly themed around StarCraft's three races: Protoss, Terran, and Zerg.
Each ad ends with the words "D-DAY 2010.05.22".
Don't get excited. Korean Air is the headline sponsor of a StarCraft e-sports league - the OnGameNet StarCraft League 2010 - and the date is much more likely to refer to finals, or some sort of special event or publicity stunt, than the release date for the game.
Blizzard has yet to announce a date beyond saying that it will ship in the first half of this year; for the control-freak developer to let it slip in such an unorthodox manner is unlikely to say the least.
StarCraft pro gaming is certainly a big enough draw in South Korea to merit TV advertisement, however, and the e-sports scene will doubtless play its part in unprecedented publicity for the game around its launch.
Watch the teasers, though. They're fun.

Microsoft has revealed that its latest round of patches won't install on XP machines if they're infected with a rootkit. In February, a security patch left some XP users complaining of endless reboots and Blue Screens of Death. An investigation followed and Microsoft discovered the problems occurred on machines infected with the Alureon rootkit, which interacted badly with patch KB977165 for the Windows kernel. Now Microsoft is blocking PCs with the rootkit from receiving its new patches. 'This security update includes package-detection logic that prevents the installation of the security update if certain abnormal conditions exist on 32-bit systems,' Microsoft cautions in the patch notes.

Free-to-play MMO Runescape earned its developer-publisher Jagex over £38.4 million in revenues in the 12 months leading up to March 2009. That's a profit of £18 million, according to records held at Companies House.
The figures were unearthed by Games Brief, and go some way to showing that free-to-play models can still be hugely profitable for companies that handle the method correctly. As Games Brief's Nicholas Lovell points out, Jagex's revenues demonstrate a 47 per cent operating margin in spite of the tens of millions spent on Mechscape, which was famously cancelled, or at least re-appropriated.
Runescape does offer a more complete game experience for those who pay, but so substantial is the free offering, 90 per cent of the MMO's 10 million monthly unique users choose to play the free version.
Jagex proudly declines to spend money on advertising its game, but welcomes some £2 million each year in ad revenue.
Earlier this year Jagex confirmed that it is to move into third-party publishing, which started with the launch of War of Legends.

Develop reports that Crytek, makers of the Far Cry series, the Crysis series, and the game engines behind them, have plans to release a free-to-use version of CryENGINE 3, the software's latest iteration. Quoting:
"Unreal vendor Epic Games and Unity have both seen their user-bases mushroom overnight since launching versions of their own engines that, while tied to different royalty rates, are completely free to download and operate. Now the CryEngine 3 group has revealed it wants to tap into this thriving market. The firm's CEO Cevat Yerli told Develop that Crytek already gives away a CryEngine 2 editor to the mod community, but explained that Crytek's expansion strategy stretches beyond. 'We have a very vivid community of users and modders and content creators, and usually that's a great way of unlocking the engine,' he said. ... 'So far that's what we've been offering for free, and it's easy entry into the production environment. [But] we do want to make a standalone free platform that people can run independent of CryEngine that will also be up to speed with the latest engine.'"

While it targets most popular MMORPGs, some popular games like Lineage were left off the list

UK development group Monumental is the newest company revealed to have imaginatively used torrent sites to bolster the popularity of its games.
Monumental COO Paul Mayze said the firm uploaded its MMO Football Superstars onto torrent sites such as The Pirate Bay – a measure which saw the game’s download numbers jump.
Speaking during a panel discussion at the State of Independence conference in York, Mayze explained that, despite Football Superstars being free to play, people were put off downloading it due to its large file size.
The company’s elegant solution was to upload athe data onto file-sharing sites – a strategy which, according to Mayze, saw a notable rise in the number of downloads for the free-to-play title.
The revelation comes just a few months after developer RedLynx admitted to leaking an abridged version of Trials onto file-sharing sites in order to tempt pirates into playing a full version of the game.
Develop 100
With piracy still an inestimably vast problem for the industry, it appears that more game developers are speaking openly about ways of making lemonade from the situation.
For Monumental, the primary goal for Football Superstars has always been to get the game running on as many PCs as possible – only then will each game open up its own monetisation models.
Mayze’s was speaking during a panel discussion which explored the emerging and disruptive social game space.

Blizzard recently announced a cadre of class-specific additions coming to its upcoming ruinous expansion pack, World of Warcraft: Cataclysm. If you're currently rolling through Azeroth, owning fools while playing as a Death Knight, Hunter, Priest, Rogue, Shaman, Warlock or Warrior, you can get an early glimpse at some of the new powers and revamped mechanics the expansion will bring your way.
If you're having a hard time understanding what all these changes really mean, we suggest checking out our loot-obsessed sister site, WoW.com, for a detailed analysis of these changes. For instance, we just learned that the Rogue's new "Smoke Bomb" ability will change them from merchants of death into invisible merchants of death. How fun!

Ubisoft's told Eurogamer that its "online services platform" for PC games will "evolve and improve" and is most certainly here to stay.
"Most forthcoming Ubisoft PC titles will use our online services platform," a spokesperson explained, adding, "As with any online technology, we are constantly working to evolve and improve it."
Ubisoft's online platform requires PC gamers to be connected to the internet while they play. But problems arise when authentication servers are unavailable or unresponsive. This was felt first with Assassin's Creed II and Silent Hunter V and then more recently with Settlers 7.
The result has been fans unable to play games they've purchased, sometimes for days at a time.
Upcoming Ubisoft PC titles include Splinter Cell Conviction, Pure Football, R.U.S.E., I Am Alive TrackMania 2, Prince of Persia: Forgotten Sands and Ghost Recon Future Soldier.

April 10th, 2010, 09:49 Posted By: wraggster
Blizzard has announced that it will release a lavish Collector's Edition of StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty when the hotly anticipated real-time strategy sequel launches later this year.
For the princely sum of €89.99 - the price in Her Majesty's Pounds is yet to be confirmed - you'll receive the game, the first in a planned trilogy of releases, and a bulging pack of extras.
These include a 176-page art book; a 2GB USB flash drive, preloaded with copies of the original StarCraft and its Brood War expansion, in the shape of Jim Raynor's dog tag; a behind-the-scenes DVD and soundtrack CD; a comic book, prequel to a forthcoming comic series; and an exclusive in-game pet for World of Warcraft, a miniature Thor unit.
You'll also get some exclusive downloadable bonuses for your account on the brand-spanking new Battle.net service: portraits for your profile, decals to customise your in-game units and a "visually unique version" of the Thor.
Most importantly, it all comes in a big, heavy box.
If you don't fancy the Collector's Edition you can always pick up the standard edition of the game (suggested retail price: €59.99) at retail, or shortly after launch, as a download from the Blizzard Store.
In related news, StarCraft II lead designer Dustin Browder has suggested to Game Informer that players should invest some serious time in the online game - 30 to 60 hours - before tackling one-on-one multiplayer.
He views co-operative play versus AI, and team matches, to be stepping stones to what could be the toughest challenge in competitive gaming.
"We're definitely going to be looking at Achievements and other tools to encourage our players, once they graduate from co-operative vs. AI to move into team play before they move into 1v1... It's a much more casual environment than the 1v1... We really consider the 1v1 the final, endgame, arena-style gameplay that we hope players will only get to after 30, 40, 50, 60 hours played depending on their enthusiasm for it." Fear it.
StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty will also include challenge mode mini-games to introduce solo players to the basics of multiplayer strategy, and, of course, a full-length solo campaign in which players will lead Terran forces.
It still has no release date, but is expected in the first half of this year - so before the end of June - for PC and Mac.

From tomorrow, Steam's allowing anyone and everyone free access to Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer.
This free weekend ends on Sunday, however, so look lively - game clients can be pre-loaded now.
Modern Warfare 2 has enough multiplayer depth to be classed as an MMO - certainly some of the game's biggest fans have poured-in staggering amounts of time.
We wonder if this free weekend has anything to do with the presence of Battlefield: Bad Company 2. Wouldn't be fair to speculate, we suppose.

Ubisoft has said that DRM problems being encountered by players of The Settlers 7 still haven't been "completely resolved" despite the game having been out for nearly two weeks.
Many users have reported problems with establishing and maintaining the constant internet connection required by Ubisoft's DRM to play the game, and the official forum has been flooded with such complaints.
"Settlers 7 players have encountered difficulties playing the game over the [Easter] holiday weekend due to issues with servers that do matchmaking in multiplayer mode and that keep track of profiles, campaign progression and stats in both solo and multi modes," Ubisoft told Eurogamer today.
"Our technical teams have made progress but we are not yet able to say that the issue is completely resolved."
Ubisoft added that users would be updated on progress via The Settlers 7 forum.
The publisher has blamed previous problems playing Assassin's Creed II and Silent Hunter V on attacks to its servers by hackers protesting about the new DRM measures.
Ubisoft subsequently offered compensation in the form of free downloadable content to those that had been affected by the server outages.

Korean 2D beat 'em-up Dungeon Fighter Online has gained a total of over 197 million registered users worldwide, according to publisher Nexon.
Due to be launched in North America this June, the game is a 2D scrolling beat 'em-up with role-playing elements, similar to classic Capcom coin-ops such as Knights Of The Round.
The game is free-to-play but features an in-game currency which must be paid for using real funds.
According to Nexon America beta testing for the game has seen the virtual death of more than 1.6 billion monsters and the exploration of 25 million dungeons. Over 28 million player versus player clashes have also been recorded.
The game was first launched in South Korea in 2005. It was released in China in 2007, where peak concurrent connections of two million users was registered - a current world record.

WIP: 2010-03-22
Dead lem bugfix
If you nuked or assigned an exploder to a lem and he died before the
explosion, he would still explode some time after he was killed. This
is now fixed.
2010-03-11
Builder sound
The sound that builders and platformers make while placing their last
bricks will only play for own lemmings during a network game. Before,
it played in lower volume for other players as well, which was very
distracting.
2010-03-09-02
Chat bugfix
Skill hotkeys and similar things are now disabled while the player is
typing things into the chat text field.
Background switching
The game will now continue to run while it is in the background.
It might be that some versions before didn´t do that.
